CES 2008 Las Vegas Jan 7-10 - Off-topic

anyone attending this? is there anything NEW? I should be looking out for?
I usually cruise by the HongKong/Taiwan booths for cheap Memory, I know they will be selling them for their lunch money during the show. already heard a few MicroSD 8gigers will be on the floor (I wrote to a few guys listed on Alibaba.com)
lots of pre OEM bluetooth stereo headsets on HongKongs/Taiwan booths, I reserved a 60" LCD TV on the Last Day of Show. will be picking itup for 1000.00
(the asian booths usually sells their displays than shipping it back)

I haven't see any reference to HTC in engadget.
Nothing.

AT&T Refub Tilts are out

I was thinking of going for one. They are only 149.
Should I just wait and forego? I have an 8525 that I upgraded to WM6 and and I just changed the case on it and it works like a champ, at least for now.)
You you guys think with the driver issues I should wait for the next new device or go for the refurb.

150 isnt bad for the device.. if ur into watching movies on your phone stick to 85..

I do use my slingbox and I watch movies and Star TreK TOS eppys.
I guess I better stick with it.
I can't believe they'd eff up that bad and screw up on the market base they established on the 8525.
DAYUM.
Do yo u know what the next device is?
where?
i am not thrilled with the driver situation, but my tilt is better for me in many ways than my old 8125...where can i pick up one for 149? my gf would love this as a bday gift.
150 !!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO i want it for 150...can i return it for a refurb please....
I bought my 8925 new for $125 after rebates. Had to sign up for a new AT&T plan though. Have to be a new AT&T customer.
Hey Xultar, come on over. Despite the driver fever I'm telling you flat out that the Kaiser is better than the 8525. I've used it for hours on end streaming my Slingboxes over WiFi and 3G without issue. I also play videos (encoded at 320x240 with bitrates under 500kps) that I've used with all my portable gear from Archos units to iPAQ's and they play just fine on the Kaiser as well.
I'd be more concerned with the lower volume on bluetooth ear pieces compared to the 8525, it's useable but a little irratating that it's not top notch.
The unit has been so stable that I've not needed to flash from the stock Kaiser rom, just using a bunch of cabs and Kaiser Tweak. The GPS is really an awesome addition, worth the trade-up alone in my book. I looked into insurance and it was more than $149 so when ATT had a Thanksgiving sale, I picked up a Tilt for $149 and keep it in the box as my insurance. If I do put it in service, I will flash it for sure, prolly to Sleuth's v1.1 as I like it the most, slim and solid.
If you do it, I'm betting that you will be happy.
ordered mine on ebay 2 days ago. Pretty reasonable price being from Canada
... is that 150 on a contract? I'm in Canada
newegg.com has it for cheap too.. 2yr contracts newegg's are BRAND NEW.. but u kno what refurbs arent bad.. 1yr warranty on them
That's about what I got mine for on sale, after rebate, & with a two-year contract.
I just don't know if I can. I'm really concerned about the driver issue and just keeping what I have working. I can't live without my slingbox or video Star Trek TOS eppys. Plus the bluetooth on the 8525 was to low for me. I couldn't imagine it being lower.
What is coming down the pike? Maybe I will go for it. I just need to think. I also need to find out how many upgrades I get a year. That may impact it as well.

So close yet so far!

Hey everyone
What is your worst experience with someone?
Mine is, funnily enough, related to an XDA that I bought off eBay...
I sold my XDA Orbit 1 to a friend of mine for £167
After I had collected a decent amount of money, I found an XDA Orbit 2 on eBay for £257.50 including postage. Auction said brand new factory sealed xda orbit 2, with pouch, charger, box, co pilot 7, and it listed all the features for the xda orbit 2. Seller had 100% positive feedback (115) and was from Essex. Seemed pretty decent.
Bought the item...a week later. No emails, no item. Had to call their house multiple times and everytime I would call, someone else would answer and I could never get to speak to the seller (he was always at 'work').
Eventually I get an email from the seller....'sorry I couldn't send the item any sooner, my account had somehow messed up and I needed to reset the password. Item will be sent tommorow'.
Great! So I should be expecting the item soon. I go to school next day, and when I get picked up to go home I ask 'did anything come in the post for me today?'. The reply I got was: 'Yes, a parcel'. YES! The orbit 2 has finally come! After about 1 and a half weeks of waiting its finally here!
I rush home banging my knee on the way in (im soo anxious!). I look past the door and see a big, brown parcel addressed to me. I grab it, run to the living room and rip the packaging to shreads!
I have removed all the packaging, and take the box...I turn it over only too see it say: 'XDA Orbit' with the picture of the XDA Orbit 1 on it. Thats right, the seller sent me an XDA Orbit 1 and not the XDA Orbit 2! He sent me a Artemis and not a Polaris! He didn't even include the memory card for the CoPilot 7, or the USB cable for the PDA, handsfree kit, pouch, etc. All missing!
Nnooo!!! I paid £250.00 for something thats worth £120.00!
I sent the seller an email and got a reply soon after. He said sorry just return the item if your not happy with it.
Posted it off today, so I should be expecting the refund.
Oh well, it happens and it will happen to everyone some day!
So whats your worst experience with someone? I bet people will mention alot of stuff to do with eBay aswell!
NEVER buy anything off ebay. people have recieved fake chinese mp3/mp4 players instead of ipod nano.
when you see unexpectedly low price, just don't bother yourself.
i bought my athena from here, £260 with blocked imei, great price at the time, as i alredy had a phone for calling...
paid through paypal, and it came a day later by special delivery.
When I sold mine, i made the mistake of selling to italy, and it didnt arrive. it might well have arrived but he said it didnt, and the post offiice said i couldnt post a phone recorded to italy, so no tracking number, and me with no money and no athena
but i guess it wasnt really an ebay prob...
Also, i bought a psp from ebay when I was like 13, and the guy stole 75 quid off me... luckily i got some back, but not all of it.
In fairness, ebay generally is good, i picked up a 5m gold plated 2 rca to 3.5mm jack for 2 quic including postage...
so its if you wana take the risk on big things...
Rory
i bought a faulty hdd TV recorder second hand which didn't work from an eBay seller.

hmm i wudnt totaly agree i bourt my HTC TyTN off ebay ages ago for £100 quid....i was convinced it was going to be rubbish probly with bustted buttons and stuff hanging off it u know the drill....
....i was completly wrong it came like it was brand new! id say the only thing wrong was that it didnt come with earphones and it had a small dent in top left but it is unnoticeable
but i do agree it is very hard to get cheap stuff without it being fake!
Tell me about it...
I've had loads of problems with eBay, not just the one with the XDA.
Once I bought a remote controlled BB tank from a business seller. He was advertising it as 'BRAND NEW'.
When it came, it was opened, the BB pellets were scattered all over the box, clearly second hand, when I tried to use it, it literally broke after 10 seconds! Someone tried glueing the wheel back on as it had broke!
It was so crap aswell, it didn't even fire that good! The remote control sometimes didn't work aswell!
Another time I bought a 1/6 scale electric rc car. It was massive but after literally 12 hours of charging the battery it would only run for 15 minutes - It would considerably slow down after the 3 minutes! The rest of the 12 minutes it would be slow and then after that it wouldn't run at all!
I was driving it and it skidded on some ice, and smashed into little pieces after it hit a parked car! Lmao as funny as it seems now, it was kinda annoying back in the time!
Another time I bought a slingshot which snapped after a month
I bought some rifle mounts for my air rifle scope which were advertised as 30mm, but when they came they were too big!
And just now I have found out that a 2Gb memory card I bought is fake!
I don't even do much transactions on eBay aswell! I've only bought about 30 items from there!
Anyway the moral of the short stories are...don't spend any more than £15.00 when buying from eBay! That way when it messes up you won't kick yourself as hard!
Also you should know, don't SELL on eBay either. You get stupid buyers who will buy the item, leave you good feedback and then a month or two later issue a chargeback on their credit card! People even try and scam you to get your items!
By the way I have just noticed, I have exessively used the exclamation mark in this post (!) LOL

WTF is wrong with expansys?

I order the Y-cable for the Tytn 2 in order to hook it up to my car stereo and other 3.5mm stuff.
I order the cable on April 13, 2008.
It is June 3rd, 2008 and my order still has not shipped.
"We are currently awaiting the stock required to fulfil your order."
And on their @#$%@#$5 website it says that they have 1059 in stock!!!!!
http://www.expansys-usa.com/p.aspx?i=161421
Emailed and called customer service and they are just telling me that my order will be fulfilled in the order it was received.
They did the same thing to me, as well as Elite Electronix. Basically, don't trust these guys to ship on time, nor give you the best prices.
you need to calm down and read below the stock line. Do a bit of research before you go off. it says they are in the "central" warehouse. That's in the UK. If you are in the states you have to wait till it's transferred to you.
I have to say I've had no problem with them. I ordered a case for my TyTn II from them on 29th May with it saying 6 days. My wife rang me in the office on 3rd June to say it had arrived safe and sound. (I'm in the UK).
could be worse.
I order a QTEK 8500 from them.
Still had all the previous owners information, text's, e-mail, contacts, etc. in it. That wasn't a big issue for me, but the external screen didn't work, still just shows a white screen.
See this post.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=389783&highlight=external+screen+white
very little quality control on there part. Won't be ordering from them again.

Going to HK! So, where to go and what to buy?

After 20 years, I finally will be visiting my place of birth again, Hongkong.
I am planning a two day trip somewhere in july, and I'd like to buy some stuff for the HD2, but I'm not familiar in HK.
I did some googling about places to shop for electronics, and came accros something like 'golden computer arcade' and 'sham shui po'. And Shenzen, is that still hongkong or is it mainland china and do i need other visa for it?
There are a few things I'd like to look out for, and if someone who lives in HK can point me out where the buy such stuff, I'd be happy.
1
32Gb microSD. These baby's are available already, but too expensive right now. Do they sell these baby's in HK? And what is their average price? It doesn't needs to be Sandisk per se, any other brand will do. Also, class doesn't matter either, it's just about the storage. And a little bit of quality of course.
2
A decent headset with in ear phones, with music control and maybe some other functions like volume rocker etc. Can be wired or BT. I listen to music occasionaly so I don't need the high end stuff.
3
Does something exists like a bluetooth memorystick/device? for example, some 16gb flash drive, running on a penlite (or two) and have bluetooth that supports for file transfers? Imagine a small size bt memorystick that you can easily cary in your pockets.
4
I'd like to buy a tablet device, but don't want an iPad (too expensive, too locked down, and too Apple) But a KIRF running android or so. Something like this:
http://www.clonedinchina.com/2010/0...clone-packs-1ghz-arm-cortex-a8-processor.html
or this:
www.clonedinchina.com/2010/04/epad-looks-like-a-bigger-iphone-priced-at-394.html
There are a lot of KIRFS and i don't care how they look like. Just need a decent tablet with updated OS and some horsepower on the cheap.
Usage at home, need web browsing, media player, some basic games and voip support.
Any suggestions from someone who lives in HK?
5
Spare parts for HD2, like lcd screen, digitizer, housing etc. Just in case that the best wm6.5 ever made suddenly dies on me.
I bought some adina batteries from ebay, shipped from hongkong, 3 euro's a piece and it still works fine for me.
I know that there are a lot of stuff out there that I actually have to check out myself, but since I will be just two days in HK, I think í'll be too short on time to find shops that offer pretty reliable items. I know that almost everything is a counterfeit, but I don't care about it to much, as long as it works.
I will be editing this post more often the following days, because I want to buy my HD2 some little presents .
Anyone who has a suggestion, please let me know.
Thanks guys.
i am not sure what it is called, but where the markets are in kowloon, the streets running parallel to that should have what you want. one street is electronics, the next is sporting goods and so on. i have never seen so many phone stores in my life. there are also electronic stores spread all over the place in kowloon ranging from the market type shops (ps3 games etc)to large retail types that have everything (kind of like harvey norman) sorry i cant help with names as it has been a few years since i was there, but it is electronics heaven over there. would love to go back also.

I might be able to bring something back, depending the item ofcourse. I don't know if i'll be able to contact you when I'm in HK, it's just a two day trip and data roaming may be mighty expensive. That's why I'm depending on people who live in HK and know the stuff we just might need for the HD2 and tell us what is available.
If you come back with some ideas where to buy stuff and how much it cost it would be nice. I have friends, that travel to HK very often. But they are young women with no sense for tech, and they also will not be able to check hundred stores for me. But I would have any idea, how expensive is for example HD2 in HK I can send them to buy it for me

Hi. i go to HK at least once a year (my wife is from HK) and i advise you not to go to the shops in TST/kowloon as they will rip you off!!!!!.....go to mong kok there is a great shopping centre there that is just for mobile phones its great! and is very big (three floors i think)...i can get an exact address for you from the wifes brother as he still lives in HK. i also know the "golden computer arcade" but its small compared to the one im talking about and sham shui po is more for computer components etc. the mobile phone centre i mentioned sells all sorts of spares and accessories for phones but i was there about 5 months ago and because the hd2 was only just released the was no spare parts available but im sure by now there will be many!!!!! as you asked shenzen is in mainland china (the town on the HK - China border) you will need a visa if youve got a european or us passport...i think i paid 800hk$..But that was for a multi entry 3 month visa so you could probably get a cheaper single entry visa.....
I hope this answers your questions.....if you want the address for the phone shopping centre...just reply to me and i will get it fot you!
Edit......heres the link to show the address for the phone centre

Thanx for the info. I do believe mongkok is a better place to bargain about the price. But i also think that Shenzen is even better considering price ranges, that's what i've read on the web.
http://www.hkstreet.com/story0101j.htm
The above article says that you can pay with HK Dollars in Shenzhen. Does this still aply, because another article says it's not. And none of those articles mentions when they were there.
I've really set my mind on buying a tablet. Any recommandations?

are there many differences between mongkok and shenzhen?
sweet i am coming to hong kong at the end of June for a week and would want to buy an HD2. However I need the Telstra T9193 version. Would Mongkok (and/or) Shenzhen sell such a product?
Don't go to Shenzhen. Shenzhen is in mainland China and not in HK although it's not very far and there they sell mostly China-made copied/look-alike phones/gadgets not the real deal unless u think those fakes are fun.
Mongkok is a good place to go and you can also find good stuff & accessories in the Wanchai Computer Mall on the HK Island side (on Henessary Road right next to the Wanchai MTR station and the Southorn sportsground).

Momax battery for HD2. I have 2 of them and they work well.

I like to look and feel what copies and other counterfeits are all about.
Since i need a simple MID, running android, to read books, browse internet and watch movies, i thought, it does not matter much what brand it is.
What I like to know is, is it true that SEG has more stuff that the shops around mongkok?
Lastly, the most stupid question of the world:
Can i buy buy parts to assemble my own tablet? Or even assemble my own HD3 with 5" capacitive display and running Tegra 2? Just out of curiousity
Do they sell for example complete SBC with a variety kind of chips, hook up an LCD of your choice and let them flash any OS onto it?

I've rescheduled my flight, now I'm going three days. yayh... I will be there from july 15 till july 17. I'm planning to stay somewhere near mongkok or nathan road, so when i jump out of bed in the morning, i'll rush out of the hotel, have some pork dumplings and go shopping.
Still, I want to go to shenzhen. Can somebody tell me if I can pay with HKD in Shenzhen?
How unfortunate.
In my op is wrote that I would get some spare parts for the HD2, if it would die on me one day. Well, it just happened to be today.
My daughter dropped it and the screen is broken.
The upper left part of the screen is pitch black, while the rest remains visible and functional. Even multi touch still works.
So I've dissasmbled the whole thing and even placed the HD2 in a preheated oven of 50 degrees, let it there for 10 minutes (as a punishement) and could easily remove the digitizer from it. But is seems the LCD has cracked too, so I'm off to buy a complete new lcd with digitizer. Anyone in HK that can tell me where to get these in HK? Ofcourse, it needs to fit, unlike some other parts I once bought for the n95, it didn't fit at all. Ofcourse, I will bring my HD2 with me, maybe they can fix it for me there on the cheap. I've already disassembled the whole freak.
I'm not going to buy a replacement HD2 since the HD3 will be out within 6 months or so.
So, HK guys, if you have some time, check it out for me, okay?
If you happen to pass by a shop, check it out for me, will ya?
Thanx in advance.
FYI I bought a HD2 in sham shui po last month near the golden computer centre for HKD4590.

Latest units in Canada

Has anyone bought a Nexus 7 from Bestbuy/Futureshop/Staples LATELY (last few days), or called them asking about the batch issues (are they even aware)
I wanted to know if they have new batches without screen separation now
I've been playing the waiting game after I returned THREE Nexus 7's on release week due to the screen separation issue
Thanks!
I bought from FutureShop on July 26th, no issues so far.
Thanks so much, hopefully others can add some info
I bought my first one from Staples on launch week (the 14th) and it had the screen separation problem. I exchanged it for another one this past Wednesday and it also had the same screen separation problem and the touch screen itself didn't work. I then exchanged it for a third one on Thursday and it had the worst separation of the bunch.
The first one I purchased in Mississauga, the second one was from a new shipment to a Staples in London, and the third one was transferred from a Staples in Simcoe.
When I returned my third one the manager at Staples said he would contact a district manager to get word to all the Staples in the region about the issue.
Thats good; the Play store knows about it already, so the ones coming from there should be fine
but I feel that Canadian retailers dont even know, considering defective units are being shown off as floor models; its a hit and miss; keep me updated though matthew I live in London too and when i know that any store has new (fixed) batches I wanna go buy one again
