I just installed the latest build of PointUI (www.pointui.com) on my TyTN II, and really like the slick interface and touch capability. Anyone else running this app, and if so have you run into any issues? The fact that the software will remain a free product makes it worth the "testing".
Thanks.
James
Theres a couple of threads on this already. I have installed it but my TyTN II locks up every time within 2 minutes of starting, even after a soft-reset so have given up for now.
I may give it another go when they fix all the bugs listed on their forums and add more features to make it more usable and by then hopefully my lockup issues will be solved as well.
I did use it for some days but I hate that the 'close' button is not an actual close button at all. It just minimizes the app instead of closing it. So it is very memory consuming.
But I did like the interface and the way it worked. Just wait a little longer to have them some issues solved.
plexat they have just fixed the close program issue today with this update
http://www.pointui.com/files/tests/hardwarekeys2/home.zip
Copy the exe over the old one and you now have a close button instead of a minimize one!
It also fixes the issue with hardware buttons not working.
the background color is horrid and the icons are goofy. but the app itself is pretty slick and i like the update manager.
i haven't used it that much, but the only bug i've experienced is while swiping my finger from side to side to move the applet ribbon the touch cube activates. i didn't know it could activate with a side to side motion.
anyway, for a beta product this thing is incredible. it has huge potential. after revisions, i think this will be a must-have app.
just installed it on my phone and it works for about 2 mins before freezing, once already its reduced my screen to randon red and yellow dots, so thats getting uninstalled.
shame really as the 5 mins i did get to spend playing with it i was quite impressed
or i would if it had a proper uninstaller
very nice!
Just installed this in a WM6 emulator (having no real WM6 hardware at this time) and I must say it is superb! It feels like an iPhone (heresy to say something around here, I know). I almost have to say that it is better then TouchFLO (Yet another heresy to say something around here).

This is a great update! I didn't like the idea of all my apps running in the background. Thanks for pointing this out.
yay! it lets me get to the hardware buttons!

No problem. I dont really know how I found it I have a tendancy to go to forums and open all threads that interest me by holding ctrl down and clicking on them. Then I read through and close them as I go.
I just happened to come across the update in one of the threads I was reading! One of the developers had posted a link to the file in the middle of a thread.

The cube activating is due to your touchflo config file. All you need to do is edit the config file to exclude pointui and the cube will not activate while pointui is open.

PointUI - some notes
Great app, but the problem is it cannot start my 3G connection when e.g. updating weather, or using update manager.
DAMN!
When I start the connection manually from normal WM6 interface, it works then, but it's annoying...
Any help with this?
Thanks,
Gabriel
You know, the saddest part about it all is that even with our $700+ dollar devices (unless you're like me and sold your soul to AT&T... $150 Kaiser baby!) we're all dying for a UI like this. Tell you what, if it wasn't for you guys and the xda-developers community, there's no way in hell I would have gotten this phone. Dutty's ROMs are magical stuff, man. Tell you what, after a few more weeks/months of dev. and a full version with a less... erm... blue background, I'd pay $50 for this program if it allows me to get through my day without ever seeing any part of the traditional Windows Mobile UI. I'd pick it up for $100 if they included integrated task manager, file explorer, media player, web browser, and other essential software. Hell, I'd gladly go higher if they allowed me to never have to see any part of Windows Mobile GUI again. The Kaiser kills the iPhone in functionality (that's why we're all here, right?), but man pointUI is a step in the right direction towards closing the "sexiness" gap.
Okay, rant over.
I'm note sure I would pay $100 for the UI, but I do agree that this is exactly what Windows Mobile needs. Overall function is great and with just a few minor fixes/changes this would be the killer app for any WM device.

I cannot agree more than what you say. HTC is a superb tool designed by engineers with some "help" from designer people. I love it, but my god the interface is sometimes not sexy at all (just compare the icons of pointui as an exemple
Iphone is a superb tool made by designers. I love it from a purely design point of view, but it lacks a lot of things engineers love (openness, 3G+, GPS, etc.)
Now the TYTNII plus a pointUI type interface would be the top must. The very few minutes I spent with pointUI, I loved it. I will keep it as soon as it really work and have more customization.
Now, I am sticked to HTC, because it is quite easier to adapt a new interface to an existing device, than the contrary
Thx

I had the same.. fairly easy to fix:
get yourself a registry editor (PHM for example)
navigate to: \HKCU\software\microsoft\today\keys\112
change: Default string to 'phone' (from Home)
change: Open string to '\windows\cprog.exe'
then i'd do a soft reset.
should work..

Hey folks, I got my Wing a couple of weeks ago and I love it. I had a treo before, and this makes me much happier. I had gotten into modding the UI a bit and playing around with the best combos of third-party software on my old treo, so I started playing with my Wing. Well, I've gotten probably mid-level with my technical modding competency thus far. I'm comfortable with most progs and mods I've found below actually flashing the ROM, and I'd think about that too, but I've gathered that most of the TF roms out have trouble on the Wing. So far, I'm overclocked to 260, tweaked some stuff in the registry, installed the HTC Touch UI minus the cube and all that, but I'm not quite happy. So, I have some questions:
On the HTC Home 5 tab skin:
1. Is there any way to put custom icons in the launcher area? Not just style-wise(though that would be good), but that link to things that aren't on the list? I'd really love to but a button that would take me to "settings" in there, like the one that takes you to "programs". I have a few other ideas too.
2. On the weather tab, I know there is a way to add cities to the "select city" list by getting the city code off of accuweather.com and changing the registry, but I can't figure out how to get the code for my city when I look it up on the site...I search it, and it comes up, but where is the code?
3. I put the HTC black theme on here, but I wondered, are there any others available? I know I've seen a blue one, and I think I've seen pictures of an HTC Touch that had a red theme....
Other Stuff:
1. I tried to up my page pool to 6mb like it says in the "all you need to know" thread, but the preparation app wont work....I install it, but nothing happens after that....I can't find it to open or anything else...Is installing it enough?
2. Is there any way to keep wm6 from putting the recently used programs on the start menu?
3. Is there any way to change the two links on the bottom bar that the soft keys are mapped to? Not change what the keys are mapped to, but like, change "Calendar" to "Settings" or "Contacts" to "Messaging", for example?
4. Is there anything out there that would let me navigate my phone with my finger? I know certain programs have this capability, like Opera Mobile's latest beta and PocketCM(which I use), but I'd like it on all windows that require scrolling....
Apps:
1. Anyone know the best app to use to stream radio and/or tv on my phone?
2. What's the best way to watch youtube? I wouldn't ask, but I've found like three or four different threads/articles on ways to do it, and I don't know which I should use. I prefer to use Opera as my browser, but I can use PIE now and then, if the process actually lets me watch it in my browser....
3. Can ya suggest any good games?
Well, thanks in advance for any help you can give. I've been trolling here for a while, so I know there are some very smart people here and I have faith. Sorry for asking so much, and forgive me if I should have broken this up a bit into different threads, but I'm trying to perfect my phone, and this was basically what was left on my list....Any other tips on how to achieve my goal of making a nice, clean, finger-friendly UI and putting the picking the best apps would be appreciated too.
Peace.
Ok, I figured out the HTC weather thing, and the today softkey thing, so I'm good there. Any help on the rest?
I can cover a few for you but any more's gonna cost ya....
flash your phone with either of the touch roms out right now and you will be able to finger scroll in nearly all applications.
try avotmv, or search using google for similar programs for streaming videos(avotMv includes youtube as well as google).
Many streams to tv stations can be opened with WMP directly which makes it alot easier to connect to them by saving them as PIE favourites. You just need to find 'em first, I would suggest doing that from your computer first.
I've recommended Flux Challenge before, ill do it again...apart from that I don't run too many games from my pocket pc. Seal Volleyball is kinda fun too.
Maybe some others can assist you with the rest
cheers
Looks like the new and revolutionized touchflo is here and from the looks of it, it looks super nice but costs money. Here's the link: http://www.ftouchsl.com/Default.aspx
If you've tried it out, please give us feedback.
The homepage gif doesnt really hilight the power of this tool.
Looking at the videos/infos is way more complete...
I'll give a try ony my Kaiser (the easy scrolling a-la iPhone is interesting)
Forgive my cynicism, but.... I can get my Kaiser to do finger scroll in most applications with TouchFlo. It doesn't look as smooth, but I was under the impression that had something to do with the shoddy screen refresh rate due to poor driver support (see stickies) and I am not entirely convinced that program is being demonstrated on a similarly crippled device...
Furthermore, the flash file on their front page seems to imply that they have some form of gesture recognition software running. The videos, however, do not demonstrate this, only the scrolling....
Dammit I need to be more trusting....
can our handicapped device handle this?

No you don't. Thank-you for raising these rather interesting points. I'd love to have this, but I wouldn't want it messing with my TouchFlo cube...I like the cube, its something cool to show people so they can "Ooooooo....AAaaaaaahhhhhhhhh...."
The device in the videos looks like an HTC P3600. It runs WinMo5 and uses a Samsung processor. I'd guess this doesn't run as nicely on the Kaiser.

Agreed, but you may find that the Qualcomm chipset (as used in the Kaiser) is undermined by the software support for DirectDraw thereby making the Kaiser appear slower despite superior hardware. If the software support was there, you may well find touchflo itself is as smooth as this program. Until I see vids of it on a Kaiser or confirmation that it is pukka, I wont be touching it.
I'm sure someone will try it and let us know if it is kosher soon enough.
Testing
I installed the demo.
Call me Placebo Pete, but I'll be damned if overall scrolling isn't smoother. PIE scrolls MUCH smoother, scrolling the file system is still a bit doggy, but smoother overall. I have Touch Commander as my "cube" launcher and its much quicker to draw.
Overall, there really may be somthing to look at here. YMMV. I'd be interested in what others think.
I also run PointUI, which also seems to have benefitted. PointUI has always been smooth because its still a bit bare bones, but now I'd say its downright spritely!
Does this product interfere at all the TouchFlow Cube? I have Slither's version. Should Cube be de-installed to run this program or are they fully compatible?

why wait for a video on a kaiser...isn't that what the demo is for...so you can try it for yourself rather than just speculate...not flaming, just saying...
If anyone tries the new FTouchSL app on your Kaiser/Tilt, please post your results here. I tried it (in demo mode) earlier today on my Tilt and experienced many a touch screen freeze. The settings area includes an option to disable TouchFlo, which I did...and when I'd test the new scrolling in PIE or Contacts, it would scroll (beautifully, I might add! Much smoother better than TouchFlo IMO) but would then freeze after just a few swipes. I'm curious if I'm in the Kaiser/Tilt minority when experiencing these bugs. Thanks!
I have not seen any freezes or lockups yet.

Given I just broke my phone (cracked the screen) and had to re-install I don't want to mess with it quite yet.
My main point was that for some people, even if they use this software it wont improve matters because of the driver issues. This might lead them to blame the software (PocketCM worked well on my Hermes, not so well on my Kaiser) when in reality the software is fine, it's the drivers that have problems.
Some of the posts here are encouraging, but I can't quite understand how the software would improve Nick's touch commander and pointui exprience.
If I develop some courage and find time I will try and install it with some before and after shots. I can't be a Negetive Nancy forever....
Does this software interfere with the Cube? Can they co-exist?
So I finally managed to install it :
- First attempt, the Kaiser was unresponsible. Shutdown / restart.
Then didn't find where to restart the welcome wizard...
- Uninstalled, reinstalled : now I follow the wizard
- Scrolling to line 50 is ok...
- Selecting multiple lines won't work.
- Gestures "down-up" ... unable to do it neither (cannot press exit nor next)
Start Menu still works (from the hard button), but I can't select anything with the touchscreen...
I tried from the Program icon to disable the app, no way... Still won't give my touchscreen back.
I'll uninstall it.

Is that the demo or bought version you tried?
Demo of course, I won't buy something that didnt convince me
Problems here too
Hi
It installed fine, but when I got to the "gesture" step in the config wizard it hung and I could no longer use the touch screen.
I restarted and all looked fine, it felt much more responsive but then the touchscreen stopped working again. I could still use the hardware buttons, so I uninstalled it and my touchscreen came back (after a further restart of course!).
I am using Dutty's V3 ROM, so perhaps there is some incompatability somewhere.
I have installed the demo, and I must say, there is a noticeable difference in the smoothness of the scrolling versus using the default HTC ftouchflo. Also I was able to complete the tutorial with no hitches. I had the cube installed at first, and I couldn't sense any conflicts between the two. This app will conflict with the scrolling feature of the HTC Ftouchflo (obviously), but after you do the tutorial and it brings you to the setup page it gives you the option to disable the default touchflo scrolling. I have yet to determine which gestures I would like to use, so I haven't configured those yet. Overall I'd say this program is a lot better than the one HTC supplies. I would gladly pay 10 or 12 bucks for it. I wonder how much it costs. hmm let's see.....
20 Duckets!!
I guess I'm gonna hafta play with it some more to see if i really want to lay down 20 bucks for it.

Philteale and Sebbes, sounds like we're having identical screen freezing problems. I think the scrolling - when it works - is a lot smoother than TouchFlo...unfortunately, it keeps freezing.
Can somebody test it on s730? Share your exprerience! Seems to me that it could bring more free RAM, more battery life, speedy reaction
Many new features, f.e.:
* smartphones support
* new black skin
* battery saving
* bluetooth switching on/off during call (also battery saving)
* speed increasing
http://pointui.com
Works well..sometimes a little bit slowly.
I'd locked my S730 by this tool.
Can anyone tell me how to unlock this?
New Features:
Lock screen can now be used on smartphones - you press up then down on dpad.
Yea, I have been using this SW for some hours and i love it!
Has some minor bugs. I cannot keylock the unit as ususal.
Then the home program shuts down. So I have to use the keylock that is built inn to this SW..
But now that I am used to this, it is actually better that the standard.
It also bugs up some times when using Comm Manager, I have not yet figured out when exactly this problem accures,
but Home then sometimes shuts down, and I have to restart the program..
But other than that its perfect. Fast, smooth fading menues, and looks great!

Thanks for your opinion, this SW little bit change the behavior of the HW, but according the programmer´s goal. The previous member contribution is typical, people does not like to read the manuals, sometimes problem is not problem it is a purpose how to use the HW effectively and users are lazy to read the changelogs .

I know what you mean
A little "Tip" if anyone wants to try this program on the S730.
I had to change the HTC Home settings "Time Out" to Never. Or else the it would go back to the original HTC Home after
10 minutes. (Depending on the settings)
Looks nice but too limited for my liking just yet.
Like, I want to be able to see the time AND appointments on the home screen, without having to scroll.
It should have more user-definable input, without having to get out a registry editor. It also needs some work to make it suitable for smartphones, like being able to add stuff to the icon bar on the home screen. Also, the application bar only shows icons in the Start Menu/Programs folder by default. I couldn't see any options to change it, or even a button to move back up the directory tree to where my icons actually are.
A working uninstall procedure would be good too!!
I agree with the mad ferret.
the customization is missing. for example where is the option to create a "favorite apps list"?
i really like its fast responsiveness!!! i wish windows mobile could develop something like that as native windows mobile software. so smooth and with such neat design. why cant they? are they ****ing retarded? instead we get slow menues and ugly lists like on phones of 1998. cant windows work with people wh o can create such amazing software and integrate it natively? cant they develop something like this themselfes? WTF
anyway, pointui is a very amazing piece of software. however, whenever i press "running programs" it freezes.... the update function doesnt work.
i prefer smarttoolkit!!
http://smarttoolkit.softonic.de/windowsmobile
Everything that's supposed to work with PointUI, works for me on my HTC S710/Vox. I do hope for more features and I am sure the developers are hard at work, but what it is now - it can only get better since it's amazing. I hope for it to run at system level, apart from that it's superb so far!
I've been using it for about a week now. I love the clean look, but I'm having one major issue. My number keys and my green key do nothing so I can't call any number that is not in my contacts without going back to the WM Home screen.
Anyone else have this problem? Or better yet, know how I can fix it?
But, yeah other than that I really like pointui. Hopefully the next release comes soon.
I literally just bought my at&t tilt today, and when I bought it the guy I got it from suggested I come here to do some digging on modifying/personalizing my Tilt to my liking. Now, I'm somewhat of a computer nerd. I can work through most issues with my PC without having to call customer service or hit up forums or anything. I have no experience with pocket PCs or windows mobile however.
I've read the multiple notices here advising to read around first before asking dumb questions, but I have to say that I'm still completely lost and don't even know where to begin. I really don't have complicated intentions, I'm almost 100% satisfied with the phone as-is...regardless, I still just have no idea what to even start with, so I figured I would just throw that out there and hopefully get pointed in the right direction. Hopefully I'll be able to take it from there, but the tutorials, wikis, and FAQs that I was advised to browse through first (and I apologize if I'm just not seeing it, again I'm a WM noob) just aren't getting me there.
All I'm really interested in doing is changing my home screen. Other things I want to do I don't even know if it's possible to do so, or if I even have to download anything!
So maybe just one more shove in the right direction?
Try This
This is not going to change your rom......This will give a new look totally...I think you'll like it...Install it from your desk top

Mike

pointUI
Wisbar advance (check out the skins for this app..)
If you know a bit of XML try RLtoday
oh, and search for "Ultimate launch" on the forum...
ummm check out the second link in my sig.
I'm in the same boat as you. There is so much information here, it's quite overwhelming. I want to get the most out of my device, but I just don't have he time to really get into it.
Well you have to start somewhere, so just say where you want to go.
Would you like to make the phone look different?
Would you like to add your own ringtones?
Themes?
gps stuff?
roms?
seriously look at the second link in my signature.
I suggest that you use it for a while to get used to it, then read, then try changing it. Just my 2 cents.
I'm guessing your question is more basic than the answeres provided. If you just want to change your today screen, check out the "Today" applet under "Settings" on the start menu. You can choose from a variety of default plugins, and some of them have options you can change (simply click the options button if it's enabled). As you install more apps, they may have Today Screen plugins as well.
DO NOT GO THROTTLE LAUNCHER.... i like the guy that developed it but it has become obsolete with manilla 2d, personally i stayed away from flashing for a long time but now that i have started i'm addictted it provides alot better preformance from your ppc, i would highly recommend it
my favorite rom right now is the garmin dk4 manilla just make sure you read up before, its not that complicated once you get the hang of it. biggest thing is make sure to flash hard spl before you flash anything else
Here's some advice from someone who has had pocket pc's for a long time. I am also half a century old, so this advice comes from experience and not theory.
Keep your Kaiser/TyTN II/Tilt, whatever it is, as stock standard as possible. Do not flash new roms etc etc. This is the cause of most problems here unless you are really clued up on this, which it seems you are not at the moment. I won't even try it.
There are many third party apps out there and in here which will not affect the normal functioning and enjoyment of your device. Most of them are freeware.
Today themes are dime a dozen, heck, you can create your own with freeware apps like ThemegenCE (Desktop app which creayes the Tsk file for your device theme and even TKCreator which is a theme creation app directly on your device I (Also freeware and more basic than the former).
You need Total Commander, a freeware File Explorer much better than than one shipped wth the device. Quickmenu 2.7 makes using the device a pleasure and hardly requires the stylus. This provides a task manager, drop down menus, controls for device utilities like bluetooth, wifi, soft resetting etc. You also need Mortplayer which is the best MP3 player and is freeware and of course TCPMP with flashvideo bundle for video clips/movies/flash video from websites etc. This all for free. Heck, here are even freeware GPS apps for navigation out there, eg Amaze GPS and Nav4All, or just go full hog and buy the best like TomTom. TodayAgenda is a Today Plugin for calendar appointments and is one of the best and totally free. S2U2 developed by A_C from XDA is a cool screen saver/slide to unlock app which is free and highly customisable with animated gifs as wallpaper etc.
This would be a good start for you.

Here's some advice from someone who has had pocket pc's for a long time. I am also half a century old, so this advice comes from experience and not theory.

I am also more than half a century old (now grand father !) and I agree with MAC advices !!!
Theme: To me, a theme just consists of button overlays to match the visual appearance of an OS environment.
Environment: To me, an environment consists of a working realtime customizable desktop, with custom scripts executed on button taps/ holds etc to simulate the useability of a OS environment.
EDIT: Sorry, so theme is the wrong word. I mean't environment in the subject title.
Well, I have searched the entire internet, but can't believe there is nothing that is worth using. Wisbar is lacking in vital functions needed to simulate a working Windows XP environment such as moveable windows which resize and minimize, draggable icons on the desktop, the list goes on. Projects are either no longer available, been suspended or even when they are available they are incompatible. I have tried various vista environments, and while they are somewhat visually similar to the real OS, they just aren't functional enough to use in everyday use. So, would anyone else agree that this is it as far as XP and vista environments go? If not, please reply and post some quality links to show what I haven't searched hard enough for and I'll kiss your boots .
dont you think that draggable resizable windows are a bit redundant on a windows mobile screen?
how many windows can you fit in such a small screen and actually work on them?
if you need that, i think that it is best that you look for a tablet with win7 in the near future
Because mobiles aren't desktops. You use alternative ways to navigate. You no longer focus on displaying as much info as possible, but instead focus on displaying it clearly and nicely.
well, I don't have a 24" screen on my phone, so what you are suggesting would be so tiny on your telephone it is rather impossible to work with neither will it be fingerfriendly for all day use. I already found the wisbar themes to tiny to use smoothly.
Of course a complete simulation will look nice, but for daily use it will be the most annoying thing to work with I guess.
Cheers,
Arnold
Hey thanks for replies. Yea, I guess you're right. It would be a pain to navigate etc. Suppose I'm a windows desktop fanatic who loves customisation too much . I don't know I just don't find windows mobile very customizable. I can't believe how hack-free the WM ROM is. I imagined being able to hack all the system files with resource hacker and change loads of things, but, none of that seems to work and the files are very well embedded into the system and are nothing but read-only.
What I'll try for now is playing around with Wisbar Advance and see if I can make it look similar to my winXP.
Cheers.

From my gatherings, you'll have to be either very lucky or you'll just have to wait until something useable is developed. I'm working on a skin, but it'll only be for the TG01 and I can't program so it won't be amazing. It'll just really be a visual representation of my windows desktop, but I'm not using WAD because as soon as you lauch a WM dedicated program, you leave the windows environment. The only way this will ever work I think is for people to sort of embed the programs within a windows xp window within WAD, but from I have seen, WAD is unable to do this.
By the way, don't you think it's funny how Microsoft have put the start menu at the top of the screen? Seems like it's a way to make it impossible to have a start menu at the bottom of the screen.
I'll use wisbar advance 2 and see what i can come up with and if it's any good, I'll post it up.
P.S. Every single vista theme I have downloaded has not been compaible for my TG01 .

If only this was an official release. I'd try it, but scared of hashing up my device.

i havent had any problems personally, and i havent heard of any serious problems.
and i have a comparably old device (i900 omnia)
you should try it and just keep a backup if you're afraid so you can revert to an official rom.
in my opinion, cooked roms are in their majority better than official ones

@ Tozzy2: have you tried this yet? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=530269
i don't know how it is like coz it's just not my thing and i haven't tried it.
too complicated for me. but maybe you'll like it.
Flashing ROMs can be scary at first. Took 3 months to convince me.
Now I see I would have burnt my phone if it were not for custom ROMs.
Well, I was actually thinking of trying to flash a custom ROM, but then after reading this thread

I am totally put off. It only takes for the phone to hang as it's installing or something and that's it, there's no way of getting back onto the homescreen again. Have thought about it, not worth it to be honest, I'll wait for an official release (if ever ones becomes available). As it is, ROM Extractor has buggered up my device it seems . Was using it last night to extract some EXEs and this morning, the start button was totally inoperable. That's literally all I did . Haven't modified the original ROM files in any way; like anyone could anyway,. they're completely hack-proof.

Thanks very much for the link, but unfortunately, I created this thread after trying this out lol. No offense to the guy who created it, it looks nice visually and clearly resembles the windows 7 theme, but it just doesn't have any functionality. Once you load up a program, as always, you're out of the desktop environment and the taskbar at the top becomes visible again. I think, someone really needs to fix this issue and then the problem will be solved (well almost). As for moveable windows and such, I agree it would make navigation quite awkward on the small screen, I guess that's the beauty of windows mobile, but I just wish there was more software available like in the desktop versions.
