Hard Reset - I must be dumb as a stump... - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Hello everyone...
I am trying to do a hard reset on my phone, and I press the two soft keys (just to be sure, the ones shown in the Tilt manual on page 19):
http://www.wireless.att.com/support_static_files/manuals/ATT_Tilt.pdf
and I press the reset button on the bottom of the phone.
I then release the reset button. (whilst keeping my fingers firmly on the two soft buttons).
It just does a normal reset!!!
What am I doing wrong?

Never mind. I was fat fingering and had more than just the two soft keys pressed.
Doh!!!

Another way is to run Clear Storage from Settings.
Less acrobatic.

It's the only way I cant get mine to hard reset, I've been trying the other way after every new flash, but I give up after the 5th try.
so maybe my fat fingers are my problem too.

I turned the phone around and used my other hand.
To reset the phone, that is...

Hard reset problem

Can anyone help me out, I am trying to hard reset my phone, but what am I doing wrong?
My phone is turned on
I press volume down botton and enter round botton.
there after i press reset
I keep pressing the other 2 bottons
Still nothing happens, the phone restarts, but no hard reset!!!
I have 1.37 rom with unasigned hard spl. But I do not have any usb cable here at my work.
Help help help
Are you pressing and releasing the reset button? You need to hold it down until the device boots.
I had the same problem as well...couldnt get it to hard reset so i went through the settings list and did it through there.
Click on start, go to settings, then click on clear storage..choose clear storage and format internal storage...enter 1234 and then click on ok...when it asks to confirm press yes and once done it will then clear everything and reset the phone back to the way it was when you first got it.

Still isn't doing that...
Should I press volume down botton and enter botton when the phone is in windows?
Keep all three pressed down dont release the reset button ... It will go through , well did for me as I noticed it did the same thing to me. I only released once the screen had changed to the options for format
Or why not do the hard reset as i described earlier?? lol..much easier and dont have to worry about pressing 3 buttons at the same time

Ok well you do realise even with the way ive said to do it, you dont have to wipe your internal storage??..you have the options of clear storage only...format internal storage or clear storage and format internal storage.
If your going to do a hard reset with the way your trying to do it...you will lose all your info on your internal storage...so it doesnt make any difference does it??. Your still going to lose all your sensitive info doing it the way your trying to do it ie hold volume button down, press center button then press reset button and release the reset button whilst holding down the other 2 buttons.
Not sure whether this helps, but I also had the back of the device removed when I did a hard reset via the button method.
Sounds like Spawn's solution might suit you better though.
excuse me if im wrong as i dont own a diamond (waiting for the pro to decide) but doesnt the stylus have to be removed or something like that to hard reset. maybe thats the issue? I think i read that somewhere.
Again, not sure but try with the stylus in or out or something :S

That's certainly the case on the Diamond as the reset button is beneath the stylus.
I have the same problem. I'm using TruxT rom. Cannot perform a hard reset. I hold the Volume Down, Center, Press Reset with the stylus in my hard and hold it until the device reset but... no "hard reset screen". It's annoying.
I've installed the HTC Scrolling cab from (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=343313) and since that my touchscreen don't work at all. There's only the D-Pad and all the hardware buttons that work.
I've read that simply uninstall this app will fix the problem but theres another problem. When I connect my phone to my computer, I'm force to connect it as an "external drive" because it's the way it was connect last time I did it. I cannot change the setting to "Active sync" when "Connect to pc" window appears using the hardware buttons so I'm stuck with a huge headache now. lol
Is there a way to force ActiveSync to detect my phone when I plug it ? My goal is to uninstall this app using ActiveSync instead of performing a hard reset. Anyway, it seems I can't do it.

Hard reset doesn't work

I'm trying to perform a hard reset on my Tilt and it only does a soft reset (in other words, holding dwon the two softkeys and pressing in the stylus does exactly the same as just pressing in the stylus). I know I can do a hrad reset using software (CLear Storage), but has anyone else had this happen?

u are not doing it right ... make 100% sure the two soft keys are depressed while pressing in stylus
make sure its the 2 soft keys and only the 2 soft keys... hitting the send or end buttons will mess it up... keep holding them in after it starts to reboot too... till the screen comes up to press the send key..like half a second or so
you really don't need to waste all that time and give yourself a hard time with pressing all those buttons...u said u knew about the clear storage applications right?..
.....SO USE IT! clear storage IS a HARD RESET..does everything you need in a hard reset and saves you a lot of trouble..trust me.

Problem: Issue of trying to do hardreset on ATT TILT

I messed around with the phone (ATT TILT with stocked ROM) tonight. After installed a 3rd party app and it booted itself (seemed like a normal procedure). However, it just hangs on the Windows logo screen and it never gets to the Today screen.
I tried to perform a hardreset by holding both soft-keys and hit the reset button; it just does not work.
I have tried more than 20 times and no luck.
I am not sure what to do about it. Would I be able to flash the fresh ROM (stocked) and bring the phone back to live?
thanks in advance.
If you device is not CID unlocked (i.e. no HardSPL) then you'll have to flash a carrier ROM. You should be able to do this from the Bootloaded screen. i.e. Hold Down Camera and Reset. Once at the tri-colour screen just run the RUU program.
Also, with hard reset the steps I take are: hold down left and right softkeys (above IE and messaging button) for a second or two and then press and hold reset with the stylus until the message appears. Then press Green to hard reset.

The hard reset is notoriously hard to do, especially with big fat (muscular ) fingers. I use two pencils or chop sticks. Make sure that both soft keys are held down at the same time firmly, then do the soft reset . If you do it right a white screen with a warning should pop up telling you to press send to proceed. If this window doesn't pop up let go regroup and try again.
It always takes me several times to get a good press on those soft keys.
a little off topic...

@denco7 isn't start>settings>system>Clear Storage the same as doing a hard reset?? If not, what's the difference between the two methods (just curious)... This is much easier than the usual method...

They are more or less the same. I have searched for the differences before, I found a few threads discussing it, but I don't think anything conrete was discovered.
The OP cannot get into Win Mo however, thats the problem

It is the same, but in order to do a clear storage, you have to be able to access your settings menu, he cannot

Hard reset after flashing

So I don't know about everyone else, but I find it a pain in the ars to perform the hard reset procedure.
My question: Would the Clear Storage function be just as good after flashing?

Yes. Clear Storage is a software app that helps you perform a hard reset. the ROM flash process, by default, performs a hard reset when it overwrites your firmware. the hard reset/Clear Storage that is recommended after just insures that any dirty data that may have gotten left behind is dealt with. That gives your device the best chance to function as error free as possible.
Hope that helps!
OH No! You should NEVER hard reset after you flash.
If you do it will make your phone clear any remaining data and keep to memory clean for your set-up install process. Plus it will make your phone run better. And no one wants that.
</sarcasm>
Honestly though, whether its psychosomatic or not, I believe my phone works better if I hard reset.

You guys have to keep your hands on the two soft keys for good. I use my left hand (index and middle fingers) to press them and in my right hand to reset until i get the white screen to hard reset.

I can't manage to pickup a 20oz steak with chopsticks (even if I stab it)! What makes you think I could use them for hard resetting my Tilt?
I ALWAYS hard reset and contrary to my post/member date, I've flashed quite a few ROM's. My problem is that I remember to do the hard reset after I've gotten about 1/4 way through getting the device set up after a fresh ROM update.
Tilt user
No cable plugged in
No fat fingering the keys
Used 2 pens to firmly hold down the soft keys then hold soft reset with stylus.
Never works.

Another Tilt User,
No cable plugged in
No fat fingering the keys around two softkeys,
With device turned on, used 2 fingers to firmly hold down the softkeys then press soft reset with stylus, the keypad flashed after 2 seconds, it works every time.
OK Then. My Tilt, I Hard Reset ALL the TIME.
Press the Soft Keys Down. Feel and look to make sure that's all you have pressed down. Then Press your Stylus in and hold for 10 seconds or the screen turns Grey. Which ever in last.

Hard reset works on my tilt fine. YOU ARE PRESSING THE CORRECT SOFTKEYS RIGHT????? ( its NOT the red and green buttons...as explained many many many times here ) its the 2 buttons on the INNER keypad above the IE smbol and above the Mail symbol...... give that a shot.... I set my tilt n a table, use 2 fingers to hold down the keys and palm the phone to hold it in place as i push in the reset button...works 100% of the time ... just did it 10 times in a row for the heck of it
First of all.. thanks for the replies.
I am familiar on how to do it, but it just doesn't work well for me. I would say it takes me about 6.7 min's on average to get the stupid thing to hard reset.

Cannot Hard Reset

I have tried several times to hard reset using proceedure described, but the phone just restarts.
Help!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2480910&postcount=4
Cannot hard reset as shown.
The phone does not show reset message & justs restarts, like a soft reset.
it happened to me also. i thought i can not hardreset but the problem was i was doing it wrong.
my recommendation to you:
try and do it without the back cover. to push the reset you need to enter yr stylus in an angle. that together with the use of the other hand (two fingers) make it hard to hard reset (pun intended). i found that i can do it much easier without the back cover or (also highly recommended for ppl with small hands) ask somebody to help you (three hands method ).
make sure you are pressing the volume down button.
also: keep pressing all three points for 1 sec then first release the reset button and keep the other two pressed for 1 second more before releasing and for god's sake do it over and close to a soft surface..., just in case.
i gave up. my phone is about to snap in half from me holding it down so hard. my hands are ****ing numb. what i think i'm doing is i move either slightly up or down while holding down the enter key and it becomes up or down instead of enter.
i did the settings-clear memory-1234 method but is that really the same as a physical hard reset.
i think i did **** up the phone, the usb connector interferes a little as it goes in the phone and activesync doesn't work anymore.
Try this procedure as another method.
Soft reset and the immediately press the volume down + round center button. Then follow procedure in grey menu to reset device back to manufacture settings. This is the same as a Hard Reset.
Good Luck and try not snap things, especially your device, lol
today's my first day with the phone, i really don't think i should ever try a physical hard reset again if i don't want to break the phone. activesync still works, whew...

i wasn't talking about bricking the phone, but literally snapping the phone in half or something similar from pushing or bending the phone too hard.
anyway, i had a breakthrough today. previously, i was so intent on keeping the buttons pressed (especially the enter button) that i was pushing incredibly hard on the phone, making me feel like i was bending it too much.
and what was happening was that pushing it hard doesn't really help but rather hurt me because it was either being pushed as up or down (or even left or right) while pushing so hard.
the key for me was before pushing reset, to press it not crazy hard but press in directly straight and move up and down to make sure i'm not pushing up or down, and practice keeping it pressed in straight, then when i'm comfortable with that, (while keeping volume down pressed of course) then press the reset button.
and the grey hard reset screen should come up within a couple of seconds of resetting. so if it doesn't appear within a few seconds, let go of the poor phone and try again. previously, i had no idea how quickly that screen was to appear so i would hold it for 1-2 minutes while the phone was going through its booting process. hopefully this helps save some wear on your hands and fingers.
