I don't want to resort to software like BandSwitch or a different Comm Manager. I just want the simple settings in th ephone app.

Those Comm Managers break some operations on my Tilt such as pressing the Fn+Wifi shorcut on the keyboard.
And anyways, I need something that will lock onto 3G only in addition to GSM and Auto modes.

Actually, the Comm Mgrs toggle between 3G and GSM, not Auto. And it didn't break my Fn + WiFi. It still works for me.

I wasn't saying it was a good or bad idea. Just stating facts, dude.

I'm not so sure that's an accurate statement.
Interesting assertion. I have it installed and that's how it works on mine.

I don't believe your facts are accurate, though. I'm using the 10-button comm manager replacement and with 3G on, I'm currently connected to Edge. So you're toggling between "Only connect using GSM" or "Connect to the best network you can."
As to why it's a good idea, dumping the 3G connection preserves battery life. If you're looking to maximize that, you can leave Edge on until you want something higher speed, and then flip over to the faster connection for your browsing/massive e-mail attachment download/streaming media session. But leaving it off by default is likely to significantly improve battery life (by over double in my case).

I have it installed on mine and 1) its the only upgraded Comm manager that doesn't break anything 2) It DOES toggle between EDGE and 3G.
I found this out by doing some testing. I actually drove around for 30 minutes because I was SURE there were areas by me without 3G yet. However, that turned out to be false as I continued to hold onto a 3G signal throughout. So then I went back home and went into my laundry room (which is the weakest area for cell reception in my house) and put my Tilt into a mini-safe I carried down with me. AHA! Finally, it reverted to EDGE.
I wish these comm managers would give you the choice between 3G, Auto, and GSM only. Would be fantastic.

I confirmed it only switches between GSM and WCDMA much more simply. I checked my Band tab on the Phone Settings window. I set it to Auto manually to start. I hit the 3G button. It sets it to WCDMA. I hit the 3G button again. It sets it to GSM. I hit the 3G button again. It goes to WCDMA. And so on. It never gets set to Auto.
So, that's how mine works. Whether it can somehow use Edge when its set to WCDMA only, I am not sure and I have no way of testing that. Or perhaps the attachment was updated at some point.
Then we're using different Comm Managers. Mine cycles between "GSM" and "Auto." I'm using dutty's 10-button manager and that's the behavior I see on my TyTN II. Other comm managers may manipulate the settings/registry entries differently. Yours obviously toggles differently.

I'm using the same one and mine behaves like yours. When I had my Hermes, when I set it to WCDMA it would NOT go to GSM, it would just lose signal completely. For my Tilt, using the 10 button comm mgr, it goes to GSM when 3G signal is lost.

Guess I got a different one then. But I did download it from the attachment. Either way, works fine for me. I'm almost always in 3G coverage areas.
OMG....that is the coolest thing ever.
Glad I read this thread. I had no idea what that Comm Mgr file did.
Everytime I try to install these comm managers on my Tilt w/Kaiser ROM it says "Insufficient privelages". Any ideas?

FWIW, the AT&T ROM has the whole bandselection page hardcoded out, so I'd not be surprised that one couldn't force UMTS-only or GSM-only on the AT&T ROM.

I started another thread (hang me) but then found this one. I tried installing the 10 button comm manager. It had a button, I turned 3 g off...now the button is gone??? and I can't get back to 3g. I'm trying to revert to the old comm manager to maybe try to reinstall...please help
I can't figure out how to enable the band selection Tab under Phone/Options.
I found another thread mentioning a registry entry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Oem\PhoneSetting
ShowUTMSBandPage=1
This didn't show the tab for me, even after soft reset.
I'm using the XDA Live rom, but I'm somewhat sure this didn't work for the stock AT&T rom either. I do remember seeing this tab in many of the HTC modified roms I've tried but I'm sticking with the XDA Live rom.
Does anyone know how to get the band settings tab in Phone Options?
I can use the comm manager, but it only switches between GSM and 3G, but not to auto, so in some places where 3G signal is week, I don't get service at all because I can't set it to AUTO from the comm manager.

I have a variation of the original AT&T rom installed. It does not have a page to allow you to select GSM or UMTS. The Kaiser rom does, but I don't want to flash an entirely new rom for just that.
There's a 3G outage in my area and I need to force my phone to GSM/EDGE mode. Does anyone know a code or a way to get the Tilt rom to force GSM/EDGE?
Or better yet, anyone know how to restore the menu/page/tab in phone settings that shows you the page that allows you to select what band you want?

Download and install this comm manager...3G Comm manager You can then turn 3G off and on as you wish
.
I loaded this on my 8525 with the new ATT WM6 upgrade and after installation I got the warning that the display may not be correctsince this is for an earlier version on WM.
When the comm manager came up the only thing I could see was the buttons for the soft keys at the bottom.
After uninstall my old comm manager would not work so I had to do a restore of a backup that was made before installing 3g Comm Manager.
Is there any way to toggle between 3g and edge on WM6 ATT?
I have an AT&T branded Tilt (Kaiser). Is there any way to activate manual network selection and search like I used to do on my old Motorola phones? Right now the options don't show in the phone menus.

Search 'force roaming'...
Also, there is an internal program called "Field Test", but I won't know if it allows network selection. I'd sure like to find out, as I'm in network purgatory.

Thanks. I've found field test about 2 months ago. It doesn't seem to work well in 3G mode, but in GSM mode it rocks. No network selection on Field Test.
Thanks, Jay
EDIT: They didn't have an answer in that thread either... I'll have to keep looking
Yeah, I should have clarified... no solution yet.

The stock HTC ROM allows this, but it didn't seem to do anything. I know because the ATT HSDPA network is available at my house (barely), and when I lose it it switches to a full signal Edge.
But! If I switch to GSM it seems to lock to the much better Edge signal at my house instead of the HSDPA. That works for me, but will it limit my signal elsewhere?

Here is the registry hack that lets you do it. I can search and it displays the available networks but I haven't been able to switch networks. Upon a soft reset it reverts back to not showing the options. If you get it to switch networks please post here.
HKLM\Security\Phone\ManualDisable = 0 and
HKLM\Security\Phone\PreferredDisable = 0

Is there a way to know what frequencies the Tilt is operating on?
I just got back from Europe and was not able to roam. My account was enabled for international roaming…so says AT&T
Do I have to enable some frequencies or are they supposed to be all on?
Thanks
Ensure that Settings>Phone>Band>"Select your GSM/UMTS band" is set to "Auto".
No "Band" in my Tilt
In Start>Settings>Phone I've got no "Band" tab:
I have:
Phone - Services - Network - PIN2 - Time Zone - More
Ahh ok....install Schap's Advanced Configuration utility which you can find here: http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-advanced-configuration-tools-v2-0-2-0.html
Run the configuration utility and under Phone set "Show Band Page" to Yes.
No Luck...
Installed Schap's Advanced Configuration Utility...Turned on the band tab. Still didn't show after the soft reset.
Did uninstall, re-install, soft reset...etc. Also enabled TTY to see if would show up and it did but still no Band tab...
Whats up with this Tilt...Looks like I might want to install the updated AT&T Rom?
ffs.....the answer is on this very first page of this subforum
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=370854
SEARCH!
Didn't find it until you pointed it out....Thanks
Works now. The Band was set to Auto so I'm not sure why I could't connect in EU....
