backup battery - PDA2, XDA IIi, 2020i General

I have a feeling my backup battery is getting a little "old" it doesn't take long for it to get to 50%, can I confirm its the round one under the backing, if that is the case it should be easy to replace no?

without being 100% then i'd guess that the battery of alpine is in the same place as in himalaya
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HimalayaHardwareOverview

relbourne your right its the round button one under the back cover under the battery, 2 solder tags and its out. easy job.
Ive had two Alpines in bits tonight so I know exactly were it is.

Spare Battery

I ordered a spare battery from Expansys, but when it was delivered it came without the silver 'holding clip' that pins it in place inside the unit. Expansys have since changed the description to warn people that the clip doesn't come with it, but no one (HTC included) can tell me what to do without it. I have rung HTC who have 'escalated' the issue a higher level, but still no response, other than not to take the clip off the original battery (which I can't see how to do without breaking it anyway). Does anyone here have any information?

I also ordered an extra battery. Can't remember where from and not at a place where I can check. My spare battery didn't come with the metal clip either. I've used it in my phone without issues. I guess after reading your post I'll need to contact the vendor and determine my options. It's apparent that the clip holds the battery secure within it's space. There are little holes on the board below the battery which the pin "latches" to.
Paul, As I see it there could be one of two issues here as the clip not only locs the battery in place but is a useful grip to get it out.
The first is that the battery compartment door may be a bit flimsy and pop-open if the battery 'shoogles' about causing loss of connection on the power contacts. On mine the battery compartment fits reasonably well and the battery seems quite tight in place so probably not the problem though a bit of insulating tape could solve that if it was. (though constant changing of batteries would probably gum up the outside with tape residue.)
Second more likely issue I think is that the battery has no physical means of ejection so you might find it difficult to get out without the metal clip.
An old trick I learnt here from a PDA that didn't have an eject mechanism for compact flashes is to take a piece of sticky tape pobably about 3cm long in this case. Fold over the last half centimetre. Stick the tapealong the battery with just the folded (and now non-sticky) bit hanging over the front edge that is exposed when the door is open. Now when you slide the battery in you have a little tab that will allow you to pull the battery back out.
Only downside is if the battery temp warms up enough to loosen the adhesive so use at your own risk!! ;o)
so at the mo there's no way in getting a spare and useful battery?
i need one!
very poor, htc! thx.

On that front, you can get one which has a capacity of 5400mAh:

Agree this is more useful on the athena. Unfortunately it weighs 2x the power monkey

But only 1700mah (main battery is 2200mah).
Spare battery with clip
In UK I bought a second 2200 battery with clip for £29 from Clove Technology (www.clove.co.uk). Expensive? Not really, it included a VGA desktop cradle which includes all the connectors that you get on the 4 in 1 cable plus a slot for charging a second battery.

Problems with USB Cover

Does anyone have a problem with the usb cover besides me? I'm not even hard on my phone, but its loose as a goose. Is this somthing i can buy online? Ive tried amazon and ebay

No joke haha I called htc and they said to put another one on there was 163 bucks and they could keep it up to 3 weeks. That sounded so stupid i laughed. Is there any way i can buy one and replace it myself? Anyone know of such a place lol?
That piece of rubber crap really ****s me
I constantly pull it on and of to charge my phone in my car, I ended up cutting it in half with a pair of scissors! so that the usb port is exposed and the sd slot is still covered by half the rubber.
As for the battery back don;t get me started on how many times I drop my phone per day cause the back cover falls of!
currently have double sided tape on the battery to try and keep the back on.

Lol, i hear ya
Its really annoying to me, perhaps the only flaw in the phone.
So far I have had no luck finding a standalone battery charger so I find that I have to recharge via the USB port, which means pulling that cover open frequently.
If it comes off entirely, does it go back on?
What are others doing with theirs?
Hi Guys,
i know im reviving an old thread here, but i am getting one of these tommorrow.
What happens if the rubber cover is simply cut off? Does it really detract from the phone?

Home made Stylus for Nook

I've been waiting for week to get my materials to make the home made stylus, finally the most important piece arrived. This took hours to get it to work right. It was a lot easier to get a working stylus for an iPod Touch, but after some tinkering, screaming, sweating and fails I got a pretty good working one. Check out my youtube video (sorry for the bad quality, did on a digital kodak camera very baaad):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujdsEt5zX8I
http://lifehacker.com/5836870/build...n-the-cheap-with-a-ballpoint-pen-and-a-sponge
Here one I read about, don't know if it would work or not though.
I just use a chop stick. Must be hundreds of them floating around my house of different styles, materials, points. Same at work just not so many. I hang on to one for a while, lose/misplace it and it'll take me a day or two to settle on another. No muss no fuss.
Quick question, can you please tell me where you got all the materials?

The most important piece, the conductive foam, I got it from ebay. Just search conductive foam, I got a 4" x 4" still have more than half left. I'm thinking that the wire and metal casing are unnecessary, so any pen or pencil casing should do. What I have discovered so far is that the Nook stylus I made requires a large surface, like you see in the video. I wanted it to be really thin at the beginning that's why it didn't work, since the NC screen isn't as responsive as we would all want.
Anyways, the wire I used, I got it from an old coaxial cable (TV cable). Also, I got the idea from this video, which is a lot more instructive than mine...I just wanted to test it in the NC:
http://youtu.be/4YE8rGuLCtU
I think im going to try a sponge before i get conductive foam.
Very nice! Did you tried to slim the tip of conductive foam?
What is the notebook software are you using on the video?

At first I was trying to get the tip to be the thinnest possible, so it would mimic a ball point pen, but apparently the LCD in the NC need a bigger surface to respond to touches. I was able to get a thin version working on an iPod Touch 3G no problem. I'm going to try to make a new following the video that inspired me, I just need a more flexible wire to make it. Anyways, the app I used is called Handrite
I'm not sure why you'd go to the trouble when you can get a stylus for a couple of bucks on Amazon...

This experiment cost me less than 2 bucks, since I used everyday materials around the house. The only thing I had to buy was the foam, which I still have more than half left, maybe for making more or using them for other stuff like transporting cpus xD
Edit: Oh and you might find the foam in everyday electronics too, like HDD casings, tv remotes, etc. So you could get a working (proven to work on NC) stylus for free.

Yesterday I had my Nook sitting open on my desk, and plugged in my phone.
The cord dragged over the screen of the Nook, and the keyboard happened to be open. Everywhere the cord touched it tapped a letter.
I tried it again with the cord plugged in to AC, but not the phone...and nothing.
Plugged the phone back in, and was able to tap keys again using the cord.
Maybe we could get a battery-operated stylus that just runs power down to the tip .
I'm thinking triple-a battery, small insulated wire down to, then acting as, the tip, and simply return up to the other end of the battery.
No clue if this would be bad for the screen or not, but as long as it's a low level of power, can't see why it would be.
We have some very creative people here who have the skills to not only make something like this happen, but regulate the flow of power through the wire from the battery.
My thought is that since the screen isn't so great for a stylus on the Nook, maybe enhancing the tapping power of the stylus would help.
For anyone who has no clue what they are doing but wants to try anyways, DO NOT use exposed wire, and in any event i'm not responsible for what happens with the use/misuse/abuse of this information.
Any thoughts on this?
ETA:
Maybe a small triple-a flashlight would make a good starting base for this project, a lot of them go real cheap anymore. Just do away with the light itself, and replace it with a wire. You get a switch already built in and all that way.

That was interesting, but I must ask, will a powered stylus perform any better than bought ones or homemade foam ones?

Without the phone, there is no current flow on the cable, and no magnetic field around it, and so, no capacitance distortion.

Yea, this I didn't know until I found out by accident. I had always just assumed there was, but now know that unless something is drawing power it's in a static state.

That is the question that I posed. If no one else is curious enough to find out, i'll get around to this eventually.
I have a handful of pen-light flashlights floating around here, it would be a simple matter to replace the led with a wire and find out.
When I find time to solder one in i'll let you know how it goes. My job is taking up way more time then i'd like in my life at the moment, so who knows when that'll be.

If you replace the LED by a wire, you will get a short-circuit on the batteries, what means that even if it works as a stylus, you will get your batteries hot and discharged very quickly.
Not to say that is dangerous if the batteries get hot!
Another way would be apply the Ohm's Law and calculate a resistor to replace the LED, but I don't know if this idea (a powered stylus) would be an energy efficient circuit...

[Q] Replacement Battery - Is it time? From where?

My D4 is nearing 20 months old. Li Ion batteries degrade over time. Is it time to replace it? How do I ensure I get a recently manufactured one rather than a unit that's been on the shelf for 20 months?
Well since the D4 has a built in battery im very doubtful you can replace it. If you are rooted try calibrating the battery. I bought my D4 2 weeks after its release in Feb of 2011......I think. Lol I have had no issues with it once I calibrate it. Here is the link to the app i use that works great for me. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nema.batterycalibration

The battery is very easy to replace - it's simply a matter of opening the back, peeling off the sticker, popping off a little rubber cover, unscrew the terminals, and gently lift the battery out (it's held in with a bit of adhesive tape, but there is a little tab to lift it out with). Literally a 60 second job, honestly.
I'm still puzzled why they made it a "built in" battery. If the connector was a slot type like on the Droid 3, etc, then it would have worked just as well, but for some reason they decided to make it so the terminals were screwed in. Odd.
Cheers,
Steve.

Whenever you don't think it's lasting long enough, I guess. The price of batteries for the D4 seems to have steadily been dropping over recent months. I wonder if it's because the phone is definitely at its end of life, and suppliers are wanting to shift the stock they have? It might be worth buying one if you plan to keep the phone for anything length of time - better that, than try and buy one in 6 months time when there aren't (m)any about, and the price has gone up.
Cheers,
Steve.

Idk how long i will keep it. I have an HTC Rezound with a cracked screen and just havent bought a new lcd digitizer for it. My bf called it a dinosaur a couple weeks ago but i love the 5 row keyboard but alas it part of a dying breed......): I think part of the reason for the price drop is because of all the technology that has ome out and that has become available in the almost 3yrs since the D4 was released.
I'm planning on keeping my D4 for a long time Is there anyone here who's got some inside info on how long the batteries might be available? I'll try and find some friend who's got a trip to the US as long as these are on stock

Battery question mark on boot

http://imgur.com/OxMh838
I just replaced my battery in the Droid 4, since my previous battery swelled up and started leaking. Motorola said they would cover it, even if it was out of the warranty, but they returned my phone with the battery ripped off, saying that "user mistreatment" was the reason they couldn't uphold their promise.
So, I installed a new battery from Amazon, and this is the issue that I get.
I was able to get into Android for a while, but after the charge died, this is all I get. I've tried quite a few things to be able to flash, anything, but no luck.
Any ideas out there? :/
I've seen that with a duff battery (broken connections) - I'd get a replacement, and see if that cures the problem.
Cheers,
Steve

If you are seeing that on both batteries, then I would check the connections on the phone. Between the two screw battery terminals, there are a couple of connectors that stick up - gently give them a scrape with something abrasive. If there is some dirt of corrosion on there, then it may be possible that they aren't making good contact with the terminals on the battery cable.

Do the screws need to be in for it to actually register a battery?

I would say so, as the screws are part of the power contacts, and also ensure that pressure is applied to the data contacts.

I don't understand why it would work for one day, then stop working once the power is drained. Would that not mean the contacts are connecting?
