TYTN II Missing Calls - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Hey guys, I'm new here, and I guess I should start off with "HELLO!" instead of throwing my problems at you...but alas.
I've just recently purchased the TYTN II (factory unlocked from Taiwan), and love it--minus this one, relatively annoying problem: the phone seems to be missing a lot of calls. I could be sitting with full (reception) bars, and the TYTN will send someone straight to voice mail. I've never had any problems dialing out, and just to reiterate, I don't believe that it's a reception problem. This "call rejection" problem seems to occur sporadically, and is usually solved when I make a call out. I'll give you an example of the problem.
1) Friend calls, gets to voice mail.
2) Friend calls my house, I look at my phone, full bars.
3) I have Fido's "Who Called" service, so shortly I get a text saying I missed a call from such and such number. (Oh, yes, text messages don't seem to be affected by this problem)
4) I call my phone, from my house, knowing full will it has full bars and that I just got a text message.
5) I get the damn voice mail, directly.
6) I call my house using the cell--no problems.
7) I call my cell again, and lowe and behold, it works.
The only logical conclusions I've been able to come up with so far are that:
A) for some reason, Fido's (Rogers') towers seem to have a hard time staying connected with my phone...which doesn't make too much sense since I still get text messages problem-free.
B) since they've just recently switched to HSDPA (yes, I'm using WCDMA), that the network has a hard time switching back and fourth from GSM.
C) the "Name Display" service which comes with my value package...(and can't take off separately) is incompatible with my phone, thus causing certain calls to be rejected with an incoming call is received with this data.
D) God forbid, my phone has a problem...and I need to get my friend to go back to Taiwan and fetch me a replacement.
Sorry for my first post being such a lecherous one...but I do hope someone is able to help me out! I'm not to sure what I expect any of you to do...maybe verify that this is some sort of authentic problem...and not scenario "D" so I can pray for a solution to this problem in the.........future (yes, it may be a long and distant future, but for some reason, I'm able to bare with this issue if there is a glimmer of hope). Thank you guys so much!

That problem reminds me back in the days with my wizard, but that issue, the caller would hear rings on their side, but wizard wouldn't get a missed call or ring. That was due to what version radio you had. For that, not sure what it is. You can explore switching radios and seeing if that works. Certain radios work better in certain areas. I have AT&T in the U.S. and rarely have that problem. Sometimes I get that with bad reception...but that is with bad reception, not good reception.

Radio
This is almost certainly a radio issue. There is a thread with every radio currently available stickied at the top of the kaiser upgrading section.

Thanks for the replies so far guys, but if my understanding is correct, and this "radio" problem only effects the output of sound from my TYTN (thus not able to hear the call coming in), then I don't believe that I am experiencing this issue. Like I said, the calls are going DIRECTLY to voice mail. I've held the phone in my hand when getting this "call reject" problem. No sign of an incoming call whatsoever. Thanks again guys!

Radio
Oh, and I also just checked, I have Radio Version: 1.27.15.32, which I believe is more recent than the current radio versions being offered on here...I don't believe 'downdating' will help, will it?

I sometimes get a problem sort of like this. I live in an edge area and this comes up if I'm surfing the net. Sometimes it's like the connection is never released and I have to soft reset the phone before I can make or receive calls again.

It's FIDO's problem ! probably you are in Canada ! I have two kaisers with exactly the same problem !!! try to disable the 3G. go to phone\menu\options\band and change the network type to GSM.
I haven't had any problem so far

Thanks, hma4. That was one of my guesses...sort of makes my data package moot, though. Thanks to everyone who tried to help out!
Oh, and by the way, 'hello fellow members of xda-developoers."

FWIW, "downdating" as you called it, has actually solved many problems with reception and battery life of the Kaiser, and for some has helped with the Camera (How? I dunno... it's still just a slow and laggy camera to me that needs an excessively large amount of light for a decent picture).
So changing your radio could indeed actually help. Now as for which radio is best well... apparently that depends on your area. Most seem to swear by 1.27.11.31 and 1.27.12.17. 1.27.12.10 is a newbie that hasn't been tested much, but people seem to get good results from it as well.

This is a much sought after radio for testing since it's later than any other non-at&t radio. If you could only dump it for the rest of us.

Sure thing, just show me how.

I have an MDA VArios III and have the same issue. Did that suggestion fix your issue?
In addition to this my handset sometimes cannot switch off. It just stays permanently on. Even a soft reset doesnt help. If I leave it for a day, it seems to sort itself out. I've deleted a prog i loaded call "Touch Commander", It hasnt happen since so I am not sure if it has fixed the latter issue.
Cheers
Max

I'm on Fido, and I have the exact same issue. I never missed any calls when I put my sim card in my old Magician. I guessed it was a network problem, but I had no comfirmation.

I'm going to go with compatibility issues between Fido/Rogers and the Tytn II... I'm just praying that this is an 'early' adopter issue for HSDPA enabled phones. I haven't tried to go back to GSM because this problem is so sporadic that it might be days before I figure it out. No missed calls today. Good luck to all of us who have the Fido/Rogers + Tytn II combination.

If you can, use this procedure from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=359015
I've added additional steps to help:
Requirements
- Qualcomm QPST software (attached in thread)
- QC diagnostics drivers (attached in thread)
- HardSPL, only needed if you want to dump from a production model
Procedure
1. Restart in tri-color bootloader mode and start MTTY in USB mode
2. Type: rtask a
3. Type: radata Note: What you type is not echoed on screen!!!! (after pressing enter ignore the error message "Parameter error")
4. Type: retuoR Note: What you type is not echoed on screen!!!!
5. Type: rtask c
After step 5. the device will enter QC diagnostics mode and it will install 3 new devices on your PC. Make sure you install the attached drivers. After driver installation look in device manager to find which COM port the QC diag driver uses.
6. Exit MTTY
7. Start "QPST Configuration" and check if the device is recognized and if it is in "download" mode
8. Start "QPST Memory Debug", click "Get Regions" and then "Save To"
9. Upload the dumped files on XDA Devs FTP server
Dump NV Items
The configuration of radio are stored as NV items. It is possible to dump these as follows:
1. Hold down camera button and hit "Reset Phone" in the Memory Debug Application
2. Restart in tri-color bootloader mode and start MTTY in USB mode
3. Type: rtask c
4. Exit MTTY and start "QPST RF NV Item Manager" and select Read from Phone from the File menu followed by Write Only listed Items to .QCN file
5. Also, select Write Only listed Items to .TXT file.
I've already dumped my 1.27.12.32 and uploaded to XDA dev for analysis for the steps needed to rebuild it back into a .nbh that can be reflashed.

i have an MDA vario III on t-mobile UK and had the exact same problem...i called up and they sent me a new one about 2 weeks ago...only to find the exact same thing is happening on this one too!!

This has happened twice to me. My phone would not switch off. I reset it a number of times to noavail. Some how it righted itself.

Hi all,
I was searching the forums for info on exactly this issue. I am having the same problem using a touch cruise on Fido. arg! is it a 3g thing? any new news or ideas? I certainly hope I don't have to turn 3G off in order to ensure I can receive calls consistently!

"Unlocked" Tilt on Rogers -- no voice calls

Hi guys...sorry if this is already answered here, but I just got a supposedly 'unlocked' AT&T Tilt from eBay and put in my Rogers SIM card. It seems to work OK on the data side of things - gleefully accessing the internet and even syncing my email, but I can't get the voice calls to work. Even shows '3G' for the data connection.
Whenever anyone calls me, they get a couple of rings and it goes to my voicemail. If I try to call out, it dials, then immediately ends the call when it tries to connect.
The SIM card is OK I know, since it works in my Eten X500 just fine.
Do I have to do something to the phone to completely remove the AT&T stuff?
Help...I love the phone, but if it won't make voice calls....
Thanks.

I had this same problem on ATT in the US. They kept trying to tell me it was a problem with my phone, although I knew this wasnt the case because I had 2 tilts in a row that did this. I called them and eventually got through to a higer level tech, tier 2 I think. I'm not completely sure what he did but he fixed it. It was a problem on their end.
I was able to use data as well, just no calls. It would drop them as soon as I made them.
Call Rogers, they will probably work it out.
You need to flash your tilt with a different version of radio and it will work.

Thanks... any particular suggestions? I'm thinking of flashing the unit with QMobile 1.2, but I don't think that comes with a radio ROM...I guess I should pick one up from the Upload area?
Thanks again for the help.

I may give that a try, but Rogers doesn't provide support for phones they don't sell. I think I will be SOL once they find out I'm connecting with a 'non-standard' phone.

rogers is really bad when it comes to supporting phones they don't have. You may want to call them and lie, and say you and a TYTN instead of a Tilt, and see if they will try to help.
That being said, I know about 3 guys that have gotten either a TYTN II or a Tilt in the Vancouver area and have popped in their SIM card and everything has worked just fine, including myself. Have you tried flashing a different radio - I am using 1.27.12.17 - perhaps the At&T radios don't work in Canada?...just a thought
here is a link to the radio thread, where you can download the 1.27.12.17 radio...

OK, the radio I currently have is 1.27.12.11. Do I have to HardSPL before I install the new radio? Also, I notice you've SuperCID unlocked as well... do I need to do that also?
Thanks for the link to the radio file.
/drt
Well, I got it to work, but...
The ongoing saga continues....
a) HardSPL'd and Flashed in a new radio 1.27.12.17. No change.
b) Played with the network settings a bit, and could occassionally get the phone to 'downgrade' to an Edge cx, and voila! the phone started working. But AT&T's software doesn't give me the option to 'hold' it there.
c) Talked to Rogers tech support -- pretty helpful really. They asked for the # of my SIM card and said it wasn't a '3G' card (it IS pretty old) and suggested I get a new one from the local guys. Went up, got one for free (since I gave them my old one) and tried it -- No luck, same problem.
d) Flashed QMobile 1.2 ROM -- still getting the at&t screen on initial startup, but everything else seems good and the HTC-ish stuff it's supposed to be.
e) Went to configure the phone band settings. If I leave them on 'Auto', it finds the Rogers 3G network and hooks up, but the same problem arises -- when it finishes dialing and tries to connect, it just ends the calls. And incoming calls go directly to my voicemail. HOWEVER, if I specifically configure it for GSM network and the 1900+850 bands, then it locks onto Edge and the phone works fine.
I guess it's back to tech support with Rogers to see what they have to say about my account, etc.
Very Weird.

Yup...from that thread, the description sounds EXACTLY like the difficulties I'm experiencing. It appears to be a hardware failure... Unfortunately, I bought from a guy on eBay, so I'm not sure I can send it in for repair. It works on Edge though, and that will be good enough for now.
Thanks everyone for the help.

Tilt: lost signal never recovers

Folks,
(I've searched around a bit and seen some reference to this problem but no definitive discussion. I apologize in advance if I missed anything and humbly request a pointer to the existing info if so.)
Just got a Tilt last weekend. On 3 occasions so far I looked at the screen and noticed that the phone had no signal (triangle with ! next to it). So for several hours each time, no one could call me. Going into comm mgr, the phone radio was still on.
This was in an area with no signal problems; soft reset or pulsing the phone radio in comm mgr would restore functionality with 3-4 bars. I finally nailed this down to having been in an area in the center of the building where I work, where signal gets lost. It appears that my Tilt never automatically recovers from a lost signal.
I saw this problem on the ROMs that came with the device and now it also continues with the new one that was just released by HTC a couple of days ago. In case it matters the phone is unlocked (using jump_spl and the other related tools and procedures found here, thanks).
Do I just have a defective Tilt? I mentioned this to others in my office and a few folks also claim to see this, and like I said I have seen *some* mention of this on the internet... I'd be astounded if this were really a problem endemic to all Tilts -- would people really put up with this?
Anyone have any additional insight?
It used to happen with me when I had the stock AT&T rom. I flashed the stock HTC rom and I don't recall ever having that problem, and now I've flashed SNE v2.5 and I don't have that problem.
My suggestion is to flash a new rom and see if that helps, and to make sure you're using a correct radio.
where do I get official htc radio and rom downloads?
hi folks,
where can i get official HTC radio and ROM downloads? I have an HTC TYTN II (acquired in Hong Kong) with ROM 1.56.721.3, Radio 1.27.12.11 & Protocol 22.45.88.07H just last month and already I'm encountering problems with the phone just losing the signal and staying lost and I'm considering upgrading however since my phone is brand new (practically), i want an "official" upgrade so as not to void the warranty. any help would be appreciated.
thanks and best regards...
I'll have to decide whether I have the cohones to flash an HTC ROM. Might at least be worth a try.
try this, go into comm manager, than settings for the phone (right soft key), than over to the Band tab, if I select the network type as GSM and leave the band on auto mine will contstantly serch for signal. i know this because my office is as close to a bomb shelter as they come and it never stops searching.
another good to this is battery life is improved
the BAD, if you want to use 3G you have to turn network back to auto and band to auto. not really a big deal cuz i dont have 3G here (yet).
a little workaround that works for me.
Thanks for that... I am running an AT&T ROM and even though I've supposedly turned on the Band tab in phone settings via KaiserTweak, I do not see a band tab. Should I?
I have almost this same exact problem! As of two weeks ago, my tilt started not allowing me to make calls
I then realized that it was also sending all my calls to voice mail. Thing is, the phone says that I have signal and has the Edge connection sign at the top. Whenever I try to make a call, the phone says "operation cannot be completed" or it will simply beep at me as if the call ended, right after it started.
A soft reset allows this to work. I've had this problem even happen right after hanging up with someone, and then trying to redial another number 5 seconds later. I doubt the phone really lost the signal.
Any ideas?
Hello
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=367355
Thanks
I had the same problem with my O2 XDA Stellar, it was fine for a couple of months, then I could hardly call out on it, email wouldn't send, could rarely go online etc etc. It seemed to be better on GSM/GPRS than 3G, HSDPA etc. I assumed it was a harware problem & as it was under warranty I got a replacement from O2 & it's been fine so far.
AT&T replaced the SIM card in my phone and I believe this has fixed the problem. I have lost signal many times (elevators, garages, etc) and it recovers each time.

Phone shows full service but I don't receive calls

Sometimes people call me and get a message saying my phone is off or out of service. But when I look at it, it often shows 4 bars of service..
When I call someone, the problem disappears temporarily, and I start receiving calls again (and I receive all the SMS's I was supposed to get at once), only to appear again later for no reason (a soft reset also solves it). It's not related to location, it also happens when I spend the day at home (where I get a strong signal).
I don't think it's a operator problem either, since my operator is known for it's good services, and other people who use "normal" phones never had such a problem.
I tried 3 different ROMs (dutty's hybrid, Hyperdragon and AthineOS) and 3 different radios (dutty's radio (1.65 something), hyperdragon's (1.70 something), and eMo radio). Right now I'm using AthineOS with hyperdragon III's radio, and almost no programs installed..
This problem happens both in 3G and EDGE mode.
Anything I can do about it?
Send it in for repair?
Seems you tried all you could...
Don't think I can send it for repair, since it's an AT&T Tilt and I'm not even in the US..
Guess I'm outta luck then
Anyone else have any ideas?
have you tried the sim in another handset, sounds like a network problem to me.
3G Network
Are you using 3G Network?
Sometime I use 3G band and even It show good signal I loose phone calls.
I changed to GSM and no phone calls loose.
This happens in São Paulo/Brazil but...
EDIT: Sorry. Now I saw that you reported this problem also using GSM band.
Thanks.
I am not sure if you're using your US SIM card in a foreign country?
Maybe you just forgot to enable INTERNATIONAL ROAMING before you left ... ?
I'm having the same problem
I seem to have started with the same problem about a week ago. A couple people complained that they called me but it rang twice and went to voicemail - My phone never rang. However, after I made a call (or apparently did something to "wakeup" the phone), I would get the voicemail notification (2 hours later).
I tried reseating the SIM card, but then it went to "SIM Card Missing". I did a hard reset, but that didn't help. I took it back to AT&T and they replaced the SIM Card. That seemed to work again, and certainly would have been a convenient fix (bad SIM card - too easy). So I've just spent all weekend reloading all the apps, but now it's happening again!!
The symptoms are; After I reboot the device, I can receive one or two calls, then it doesn't ring anymore (the caller hears 2 rings then it goes to voicemail). If I cycle the Phone radio button in the Comm Manager, or cycle power, it comes back to life for 1 call, then craps out again.
I'm just using the standard AT&T ROM (without the Bloatware after this past reset) and the standard/default radio version 1.27.12.11
The only thing that I have noticed that seems different lately is that the "Comm Manager" task is always running when I look at the running programs (which I don't think it used to) I had also recently installed Garmin XT.
The device is of course 1 yr + 2 weeks (so I assume just out of warranty)
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
Hmmm,
what I would try, is, to just make a hard reset, load only my contacts to the phone and run it for a while to monitor its "Incalling" behavior. If everything seems to be fine, I would go ahead and start installing an application, then monitor my device again for a while, if everything is fine I will go ahead install the next application ... and so on. That is just to make sure that no 3rd party application causes this problems.
BTW:
I don't think that GARMIN causes this problem. I used to run Garmin on my HTC too (v5.0) until I came accross SYGIC McGuider (which works much better and card scrolling is much smoother than Garmin).
Well,
to come back to the point: if you get the same problems without loading any 3rd party application on your device, then I would recommend trying another ROM (best advice: go with the HTC stock ROM). If it also happens with the other ROM then it might be hardware related and difficult to fix.
Thanks - I knew that's what I should do, I just didn't want to do it after having spent all weekend reloading and configuring it. I thought I had read somewhere about Garmin having to have the phone radio on to work, so I was hoping there was a setting somewhere that I was missing that was powering the radio down. But..... I suppose it's time to go back to common sense and just do the reset
So far it seems to be working now. I'll give it a few days with just the basics and then start reloading one at a time.
Thanks for the quick response!
Spoke too soon
looks like I spoke too soon, it's doing it again - seems like it was fine for about 3 hours, but now .....
guess it's time to try my luck with AT&T - time to see how good their customer service is

no, I was just using the default browser.
I've got nothing installed on it at this point so I'm guessing it's hardware related.
Over the last couple months I had been experiencing some strange battery drainage (not related to the GPS issues). I don't know if that was a symptom or not. It just seems like the radio is going to sleep somehow - it wakes up for a little while if I sync my email, cycle the radio via comm manager, or cycle the power.
Anyone know if there is a setting somewhere that controls that? (sure would be nice if it were that simple)
The AT&T store was basically useless, all they did was give me the phone number for the warranty department (but since I'm 2 weeks past warranty, he doesn't think they'll help me), and of course offer to upgrade me to the Fuze for $375 - no thanks!
I've had the same issue (I think). I too think that it seems to happen when I have a 3G data connection active and moving back to GPRS (non 3G) seems to make it better....
I'm on a standard UK ROM and using BTMobile as a provider.
I was driving down the motorway the other day and overtook a friend. He rang me and went straight to voicemail. I then got a text to say that I had a voicemail and rang him back.
I was running TomTom Traffic at the time so would have had a data session enabled....
I think its something to do with the data session sometimes not letting a call through but can't put my finger on anything and certainly can't find an option to change any settings...
Also, even at home, I'm constantly picking up my phone to see that it "has no signal" and the exclamation mark is displayed - so calls aren't coming through - but it then connects and shows a three-bar strength signal. Don't understand why it keeps dropping out, but I get a 3G connection at the front of my house and an ordinary G connection at the back and I think that it sometimes to stay connected to the 3G connection for data even when the phone signal is very poor and it would be better dropping that and connecting at "old" GPRS speed...
Same on the train on the west coast main line out of London. I think having the 3G turned on causes the phone signal to drop out completely more than when 3G is turned off, as the phone tries to hang on to the signal of a 3G cell and doesn't successfully switch over to the next "non 3G" cell whilst in a call.
have you tried a new radio such as NIKI's?
well, AT&T warranty was even less than useless. Home phone, Internet, and Wireless all through AT&T and the best they can do is "see if they could get me a deal on a new phone" or refer me to HTC technical support. Nice customer service AT&T!!!
HTC technical support was actually trying to be helpful, once she found out I already did a hard reset, she referred me to their warranty group. They looked up the S/N and it's still under their warranty (I guess theirs is 15 months after manufacture date). Now the only problem is I have to send it in to them to see if it's covered under warranty, and of course be willing to go without my phone for 2 weeks (and pay them a yet to be determined amount if they decide it's not under warranty).
I'd like to try a different radio, but looks like there's too much for me to read up on - I need to get the device fixed, I've already lost too much time with it being messed up and me screwing with it.
Update
so this morning I was ready to throw in the towel and send the device back to HTC. At least they were willing to help me out, unlike AT&T.
I get to work, and of course the phone seems to be working (which isn't unusual, it works for a little while then craps out). Come lunch time, it's still working (now this is unusual, it must be a fluke, I'll give a couple more hours before I package it up). 4:00 and it's still working! Now I'm starting to wonder if it's got to do with the cell towers near my house (and the AT&T store since it did it for them too).
I email my buddy who lives about 1/2 mile away and also has a Tilt just to see if he's had any similar problems. He calls me back laughing. There's 5 People in his office with the exact same problem (and not all Tilts either).
So to make a short story long....... it appears to be a problem with AT&T, NOT the device (but Thank You very much AT&T for the incredible customer care you demonstrated and for trying to screw me into buying new devices for outrageous prices)
So at this point, I'm not sure if it's that AT&T has fixed the issue across the board, or if it was the "Resync the routing" that the online chat person tried last night that finally propagated across the network (I assume so that AT&T can find my phone in order to route the calls to me).
I guess we'll see if it does the same thing when I get back closer to home tonight, but I'm relieved that it appears to be fixed.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions! Now I have a little more time to read about how I can screw up my phone on my own schedule - all the practice of resetting it and reinstalling everything, and seeing how much faster it is has inspired me
Hi bbaydiver
Did Att fix your problem? I had same issue with my tilt 8925. I tried all the orginal Att rom "same problem". After couple minute, I can't receive and make call. thanks

I didn't tried asking AT&T for a new sim card. but I will call them to change the sim card. Does anybody know how to disable the 3G function?
Just a "me too..."
Hello everyone. I just wanted to report that I'm having the same issues...they started about a week or so ago.
I've had my AT&T Tilt for about 8 months now (it's a warranty replacement for my first tilt, bought in July...so of course, I'm out of warranty). I recently had problems receiving calls, and then I started being unable to make calls, even though my phone shows a decent signal...anywhere from 4 bars to 2 bars. When dialing, it'll say "Dialing..." for a few seconds...and then it clicks off. A soft reset will fix things temporarily, but that's it.
I'm running the stock AT&T ROM (I'll check the version number if someone thinks it'll help), and I've tried doing a hard reset AND replacing the SIM card. Same effect.
Someone please let me know if they resolved this problem. AT&T offered me an HTC Fuze...but I'm extremely wary of other phones by this manufacturer. I'm very, VERY tired of phones crapping out on me after having just spend a couple of hundred bucks on them. At this point, I'm just looking for something reliable. If someone else here has had problems with the Fuze, please let me know...not to start any fights around here, but I'm actually thinking about going with the iPhone.
Thanks.

Help required with MDA Compact faults

Hi, I am in need of some help with my MDA Compact which is on a T-Mobile contract.
I am having a number of issues, a lot which have occured since I got it just over a year ago but I have lived with until now. The main issue I have with it now which is quite a major issue is that I am not receiving all of my calls!
I have had a number of people say that they cannot get in touch with me as their call to my phone goes straight to answerphone as if its switched off or has no signal. I then later get a text from T-Mobile saying I have a missed call. Now I know its not turned off and this fault is occuring in full strength signal areas so I assume it is a fault with the phone or software.
I was told by T-Mobile that they needed to send it away and it would be upto 2 weeks before I got it back, I cannot do without it for that long and my old Vario II's battery has died now so cant use that. They said it would just have a software update and I could do that myself.
The other issues I have had with it include....
Turning on screen and it totally freezes, nothing works including the power button, I have to remove the battery.
Press phone button to make a call and it takes me to the programs screen, this happens 2-3 times before sorting itself out.
Internet page gets stuck in ladscape mode or slow to return to portrait.
Hanging in screens and buttons slow to react
Crazed screen as if the screen is cracked, rebooting it is only cure.
On the make call screen, last two dialled numbers appear but keypad is missing although when you press the screen where the numbers should be they appear as each is pressed.
When receiving a message the phone vibrates and will not stop, it continues until phone is turned off.
I sometimes get a phantom unread email that is not there, have to delete email account and set it back up again to clear it.
Back of phone gets very hot when using Web 'n' walk
Also I have Sync'd with my old computer at work last year which was fine. I have downloaded Activesync 4.5(I think) to my laptop and connected my phone to try and back it up. It Sync's but will not copy any contacts, it says I have to disconnect device, download Outlook & open it but I already have Outlook(I have XP home edition 2002 SP3 & Outlook Express 6)
There have been many other faults which I cannot remember right now, I love the phone but I will end up binning it soon if I cannot sort it.
Now heres the problem, I would like to back up all my contacts etc then upgrade my phone but without voiding the warranty. Thing is I have not got a clue where to start.
I have a good basic knowledge of computers but reading the site talking about cooking ROM's etc baffles me a bit.
I need a basic step by step guide to doing this and the best upgrade without voiding the warranty if I can as I have 3-4 months contract left.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
If you wanna upgrade to any official TMobile ROM for your device, just select one from either official site (TMobile support or HTC support, dunno how you receive support for your device) or you can find it over here: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Diamond_Upgrades. If you scroll down on this page you will also find a direct link to Tmobile support.
If that's all you wanna do, then you're good to go as long as you follow the instructions of the RomUpdateUtility (RUU) that comes with the official ROM.
However, if you wanna unlock (which doesn't mean sim unlock) your phone to be able to flash (=upgrade) any ROM (custom, different language, different carrier etc etc), then prepare yourself for a serious piece of reading; everybody on this forum started this way, feeling overwhelmed with information and scared of bricking their phone and voiding warranty. Btw..these links are for GSM devices only. GSM is a device with a sim card, if you don't have a sim card then you have a CDMA device, and that's a differten story at some points.
This is a good way to start:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=400402
You have to realize that if you unlock your phone you always gonna void your warranty; luckily there's also a way back to restore to factory settings; more info can be found over here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=537496
Before you start doing anything...write on a piece of paper:
- your actual SPL version
- your actual Radio version
- your actual ROM version
Google this forum to find the download links for this stuff and be sure you have those three (original) pieces (of software) stored and safe on your computer, to ensure you can always go back to factory settings.
Hope i gave you a start and good luck!
Oo.... Outlook express isn't the same as Outlook, To be able to sync your device via Activesync you have to have Outlook from Microsoft Office installed on your computer

Honestly, i have no clue if upgrading would solve your problem; your problems might just as well be hardware related, i really can't say.
My first shot would be an official software update from Tmobile, that indeed you can easily perform yourself, and no warranty issue, cuz it's all official.
And if that wouldn't do the trick, well, if i would have your performance on my diamond i wouldn't hestitate to send it in for repair if it still has warranty. That would be my second shot, cuz i think either Tmobile or HTC will/must do some hard- and software testing before returning the device to you, and if they can't solve the problem via software upgrade they have to perform hardware repair as well.
Can't you get a temporary device from the service center? I still have a almost new Qtek 9100 here for you to borrow at no costs, but i'm not responsible for any back or shoulder damage you get from walking around with that thing

Someimes My Nexus One won't send text messages or make phone calls unless I reboot :(

I have an unrooted ATT version of the nexus one. Randomly about 1 or 2 times a day while I am texting I will get a failed to send message and no matter how many times I try it just keeps failing. It won't allow me to send texts to anyone else either. however I continue to receive texts which is kinda odd.... the worst part is that always while this is happening I cannot make or receive phone calls this is very frustrating since I could be missing phone calls and wouldn't know it until I try and send an SMS or make a call. I have tried a lot of different things such as setting my bands to USA and setting my network preference to WCDMA Only but to no avail... I also tried a factory reset... also if I try and toggle airplane mode or turn off the radio it just crashes and I need to reboot.. if i try checking the SMSC while this is occurring but hitting the refresh button
I get refresh error and if I try and update it with the correct number I get update error... I really love my N1 and would really appreciate anyone who could shed some light on this issue
Re: My Nexus One won't send text messages or make phone calls unless I reboot
Could this be an AT&T network issue? I had similar symptoms with my HTC Hero (admittedly running EDGE) in certain parts of San Francisco earlier this year. It seemed to be the result of network congestion. Does this occur in a city or other urban area?

I am actually not on AT&T I am on Rogers network in Canada. I am living in Toronto so the 3G coverage is really good and I`ve never had this kind of issue with my previous phone which was a BB9000 and none of my friends seem to have any of these problems
I also found ppl on some other nexus one forums describing the exact same problem which leads me to believe its not a network issue but I am still not 100% sure I tried calling Rogers and had them do a cancel location and it didn`t fix the issue either
I had this issue only this morning and I'm in the UK, I put the phone into Airplane mode and back again and then everything is fine.
I have this issue about once a day.
Running the newest Cyanogen with no other modifications. Radio is the most updated one available.
Flipping to Airplane mode and backed worked on my G1 if I had an issue similar to this but the Nexus doesn't respond to it.
I reboot atleast once a day to fix this. -- Not sure if it's the radio or Cyanogen.
Anyone else have some input?
EDIT: Should have included, I am on T-Mobile
This actually happened with me today, a text kept failed and didn't get pushed through until I reset the phone. I'm hoping this doesn't turn into a daily thing
next time this happens if it happens again could u guys try and make a phone call before resetting so we can see if our problems are identical?
Thanks
This sounds like a problem I have had for several months now on T-Mobile (I just bumped the thread under the "General" topic to see if there were any developments, as I've been away from the board for six weeks or so). The symptoms I have are that the signal strength icon in the status bar shows zero bars with an "x" and the home screen says "No service." When I attempt to power off, after a while the spinning arrow stops spinning, the trackball flashes once, and then the phone reboots (takes about 45 seconds to a minute after I initiate the power-down before the reboot starts).

I am unable to make phone calls, send texts, etc. until I reset. It has no impact on Wifi but kills the cell network completely.

I also have a long delay after hitting restart when I get this issue. Maybe Ill try to get a logcat and see what it gets stuck on..
I'm getting RMA'ed, again, for the same issue plus not being able to register on the network after I get the x with four blank bars. I get either "error searching for networks" or "sim is invalid on this network". It's since fixed itself... somehow but i was without any phone service despite trying everything (calling tmobile for network outages, hard reset, reseating the sim card, other stuff) for about 3-4 hours twice now... and a few shorter time periods (1-3 minutes of those errors) before that.
Possible solutions.. which I've only done after it started working again but didn't cause anything bad to happen. So far have been without any of the previous issues, plus my original long standing issue of not being able to send texts, get any sort of data, or call (I call it the up arrow without a down arrow problem where the phone is trying to connect but doesn't receive anything back). These solutions were originally posted here:

http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/android/thread?tid=47dc569ca9667ba7&hl=en
They're also solutions I've come up with for my issue as well and seemed to have worked for a couple of others.
It's as follows:
*#*#4636#*#* and selecting phone information. Press the menu button and select the proper band. I'm guessing if you're in canada on rogers which uses the same band as AT&T US you'd select USA band. Anyway after selecting it should re register on the network.. close out of there. Turn off and turn on the phone and see how that goes. For people in other regions I have no idea what to properly select but it was posted on one of the threads on the google forums that it should be "automatic". Check with your provider and/or google tech support.
Another thing I've seen is again in the *#*#4636#*#* menu under phone information put in (THIS NUMBER IS ONLY VALID FOR TMOBILE USA) under SMSC 12063130004 and press update. Call your provider for your number. Restart the phone.
Less likely solutions (in order of descending likeliness to help you in your particular case):
Hard reset and/or verify the APN settings for your carrier. I've been told non factory default APN values for tmobile over the phone (google support) so I don't know if verifying them or asking for them will help or cause more issues but sometimes there's apps the mess with the APN values which could cause some of your issues. So while this has a high potential to help, it's easy to screw up. Hard resetting the phone will give you factory default values (I'm 99% certain but from what I remember). Changing them from non factory default isn't a terrible thing however call your provider rather than google tech support for the values.
Calling up and asking to add/verify the IMEI number to the network (i never did this until recently although it didn't fix my issue right when they added it anyway) and/or doing a network cancellation might help. Unlikely but if you' RMA'ed once they'll have the wrong one on file and could cause issues depending on the network.
Replacing the SIM card. Takes literally 30 seconds. They ask for account info at the store, they scan the new one.. and give it to you. You pop it in and go. If you have an older SIM card this DEFINITELY could be the issue. Its unlikely its defective but it's always worth ruling that out.
Let me know if any of these help.

I`ve tried all the solutions u`ve mentioned except for swapping to a new SIM card... I guess it might just be my next step but I have my doubts
I get this kind of issue occasionally, under these specific conditions only:
1. I'm at work.
2. I bring my phone with me into an area with no signal (screen says no signal, and I have 4 blank bars with an X) for more than a couple of minutes (for me, it's the room with the coffee machine - which I use a lot - no provider gets signal there on any phone).
3. It doesn't always happen, just sometimes, but when I go back to my desk, it won't reconnect.
4. Going into and out of airplane mode fixes it every time. However, with the latest CM and Ivan's Diet kernels, going into and out of airplane mode causes an immediate reboot when I try to come out of it, and only when I'm NOT connected by USB and when I AM coming from "dead" service, making logging the problem, well, problematic. Using other kernels (even OC'd kernels) does not seem to cause this airplane mode problem.
Only had this happen once trying to send a plain old SMS. I restarted the phone and no problem. I didn't think of trying to make cell calls, but if it happens again, I'll try that.
I too have had this issue with SMS. My browser works though when the SMS problem occurs. Haven't tried a phone call. I am on T-Mobile USA.
Are any of you using task-killers that may somehow be interrupting an important background service?
I have the same exact thing happen and I am on T-mobile US. I was hoping that I wasn't the only one but it seems to happen on all of my phones so I have just chalked it up to network congestion. Unless someone has an actual answer.
I have this issue about once a day.

This helps with the switch from Edge -> 3G -> H.
I wonder if it would fix this issue.
I don't have the issue so I am unable to test myself.

I am using Advanced Task Killer Free, but I'm pretty sure I added important background services to the ignore list so they shouldn't be killed.
Just to double check, what background tasks shouldn't be killed?
