How can I COMPLETELY backup my factory ROM? - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario Software Upgrading

Hi,
I want to upgrade my Wizard to WM6 but want to backup/save my original factory rom, the one that came with the phone when I bought it aka the one that Cingular installed just in case I need to revert. I looked everywhere for this issue before posting but did not find a clear answer. I saw that you can backup to mini SD but once again, the instructions were not clear. What I essentially want to do is, backup the original ROM and in case I do not like one of the WM6 roms (hard to believe), I would revert back to the original rom. Can anyone out there provide a clear answer and if so, provide instructions? I know some people have done it with something called "mtty" but I have no knowledge of this program and therefore, do not know how to use it. Thanks in advance for your time and your help!!

If you dont understand how to use MTTY to backup your rom to sd card, then simply go onto the cingular site and download the rom for your device.
Then backup all your data with active sync(XP) or Windows mobile device center(VISTA). Install Sprite backup and use it to backup all data on your phone. it will be a trial version, but it enables you to make backups and restore them, even when the trial has expired you can still restore the backups you just cant make any more new backups unless you buy it.
then make sure your device is cid unlocked and download the WM6 rom you want to try and flash it, if you dont like WM6 you can reinstall the cingular rom and restore the backup you made using sprint backup.
Major note You CANNOT restore a FULL backup that you made from your cingular rom onto the WM6 rom, if you do, the device wont boot and you will have to reflash again.
You can restore a partial backup though ,of say your messages and PIM data and any files in my documents but do not try to restore the windows files.
Hope this helps
Oh i forgot to mention, it is a Pain in the arse trying to flash cooked roms in Vista, so if you have Vista i would recommend using an XP machine to flash, flashing original roms works fine in Vista though

I see, thanks for answering man. That helps.

How to..make a full bckup on new ROM without problems

Hi guys.. I keep reading your beautiful forum everyday, learning some...
As TheLastOne says, one must do a fresh install after a new ROM upgrading, avoiding the backup to overwrite some file of the old Rom.
My question is... is there a way to restore programs anddevice settings (like buttons config, rings, passwords, network settings etc) withouth making conflicts? I was thinking about a backup software that only saves custom elements.. do anybody know a way to do it? Thanks a lot. :?:
PS I read the post from Happygoat about CABs...is very tricky for me...I hope ther is a easyer solution!!!
There are two programs out there that make decent backups...
1. Sprite Software
2. SunnySoft Backup Manager
Both can be customized to only backup personal data, such as phone number database, etc.
To backup settings, the only way is to make your own cab.
What you do not want to do, is to backup everything, including the registry, and restore it after a ROM upgrade...!
These backups are nice to have if your ROMs stay the same...but if you upgrade/change ROMs, and restore such a backup, your PDA could become unstable. This has to do with the fact that the ROM update uses its resources and registry different, and writes programmes differently.
Hope that clears up things for you.
Thank for clear and fast reply @ HappyGoat..
So I will wait for a definitive "guide" from you about registry and settings CAB saving and try out the softwares u mencioned..by the way those sw save and restore also programs relative registration passwords?
I have made a full backup file on my storage card of my registry with PMH, now I think to do the follow:
1) backup all programs and data with Sprite software on sd card
2) upgrade to new rom and hard reset the device
3) reinstall PMH and restore registry
4) reinstall Sprite and restore programs and data
5) ... it will be ok ? I hope so because I really don't understand how to follow step 2 from HappyGoat guide
Thanks for pacience.. (TheLastOne...can you give an opinion..?)
Vicer,
Check this below link from Sprite Software for your Sprite backup.

I can confirm that you can successfully backup after a ROM upgrade and you wont lose any new ROM functionality after restore. I have tried this with various ROM upgrade and it works. Follow the instructions and every thing will be fine. However one thing you should note that when you restore from the old rom and if the program get stuck at one point, then dont feel afraid just soft reset and restore again. Remember that if your restore is finished with out any warnings it means that it is restored perfectly.
I hope this helps and if you need any information then please let me know.
Hemant.
Thanks a lot Hemant..I will try soon!!!
Thanks Hemant, I've been looking for this answer for a long time!
Backing up the rom because of garanty. How to?
My question is: how to backup the entire rom, when we got the device for the first time?
Cause, if the device gets with a problem, and went to the "doctor", the garanty is made (at least where i live), by the original rom.
Someone can help me out?

Unfortunately I had many problems after the restore with Sprite...I reinstalled all from scratch and now is all ok (unless I downgraded radio to 1.10 that is more stable in my opinion) Ref your question... I'm not an expert but I read the wiki everyday...and:
1) follow the getdevicedata procedure to know your original SHIP rom.
2) find on the xda ftp site the one that mactch exactely with your data
3) you dont need more to dump your Rom!! anyway on the forum you can search for "dump rom on sd card" to find the answer to your original question. Hope this helped..byez

Backup existing ROM-Help needed

Hello,
Is there any proven method to backup the existing rom to a form of files like the Updated ROM (nk.nbf,RUU,etc.)?
I would like to preserve my original wm5 ROM since it contains Payed application i can't re-register.
After backing up-it will be WM6
Thanks
Roy
im looking for the same thing too
because i want to try out other roms but i have alot of stuff on my current phone
i know theres a utility that will backup to the minisd card and your able to back it up later
no luck yet
im still searching the forum and google though
No, for most backup applications, you can't restore a WM5 software backup to WM6 device, otherwise weird incompatibility will be happened (such as crashing Contacts)
Yes ! very true, there wud be a incompatibility issue, however if you backup your wm5 rom on a Sdcard, that is also only possible if you have a CID unlocked device, then in time of any emergency, you can reflash it back to your phone, through Sdcard method to restore it back in working condition, but all you applications or programs in wm5 cannot be restored back to wm6 OS.
Cheers
Thanks for you help,
my thoughts were to keep the original ROM for selling this device..

This is the way to make a copy of your current ROM of the Wizard to a SD card.
As stated above this does NOT include any application or data you add yourself to your Wizard but only those apps that comes along with the ROM in the first place.
This should be just fine to have a backup of your current WM5 but does not help to "preserve" any paid applications you installed yourself neither your contacts etc.
Good luck!

Sprite backup

i just flashed my Tilt from ATT wm6 to HTC wm6.1
I created a backup file on Sprite Backup. Now i want to restore it and it says that it can cause significant problems if i restore from a different ROM. And wants me to select a Device Upgrade File. Where do i find a Device Upgrade File?
You shouldn't do upgrades from ROM to ROM (especially if it's from 5 to 6 or 6 to 6.1). There's a whole new registry usually and a lot of different things. Just add the program files back and stuff like that, but not the registry. Better yet, reinstall everything manually.
Okay, darn. lol
Now Im learning.
Thanks

Just thought i'd share, the latest version of SPB backup does let you
restore after ROM upgrade (ROM upgrade mode) & also restore a backup on another device (device upgrade mode)
here's the link: http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/backup/?en
Cheers.

Warning: spb does not yet fully support WM6.1 for his Backup. With Kaiser (WM6.1) it does not work properly (lot of device hangs).
I Think its bricked
I when ahead and downloaded the new rom with WM6.1 for the ATT TILTfrom the HTC website and did everything to the bone and used sprite backup to backup my files but upon restoring them, my screen just boots through att logo and then shows the flying 3G symbols and then blank screen. I can get to the boot loader and but when I try to reflash my phone, using hard spl it says it cannot find my phone. I have spl 3.56 on my phone. Can anyone help me?
When you're in bootloader mode, just flash to the stock ROM and you should be fine.
Thanx all!
I just want to say thanx to everyone who responded and great thanx or asfoor for the wonderful solution for this problem which can be found here.....

question on spirit backup

I have a tilt with the built-in spirit backup. I tried to use it but when I did the restore after updating the rom, alot of the programs wasn't restored properly or registry info was changed back to befault. I thought Spirit was supposed to restore everything after a hardrest or a rom upgrade? Did I do it wrong or something? Because of this, my computers all want to resync all the contacts and everything all over again, which is a pain as it takes hours to resync(thats another issue, but not related to this)
Hard-reset. Yes.
Rom upgrade. No.
And the built-in sprite backup was a trial. Did you buy it? If not you're screwed. Sorry man.
Sprite is retarded in a lot of ways. You should start using PIMBackup and -UC-.
Kraize
I used the one that came with the Tilt. Ok, so what I seen already, I got screwed. What program is good to do a complete backup, where I won't need to resync(where it thinks its a whole new phone) with my activesync after the restore?

The full version of Sprite is by far the best backup utility out there. SPB Back Up would come in a close second.
Sprite (full version) has an option for retoring to an "upgraded" rom. But my opinion is, if I change the rom all together (not just a hard reset) I am manually loading all my programs.
Test both extensively before purchase.
spirit backup says i don't have enough memory on my card but i have almost a gig empty. this just started. please help
by the way, this happens when i try to backup . thanks

Change rom and restore backup

I've searched at the forum but couldn't find a good answerd for my question.
I got a Vodafone NL X1 it's currently on the Vodafone R2 release but i want to change it to the generic release(hate the vodafone crap). So my question is do I need hard spl to flash another official rom to my X1. I know that you need hard spl to flash a cooked rom but is flashing another official rom the same case?
And another question, i've read on websites that spb backup can restore a backup after a rom update. Does anyone have experience with that and is there a big change that i will have problems with that? And if I use this when I flash the generic rom instead of the vodafone one to my phone does it also restore all vodafone crap?
Hope someone can help me
thanks in advanced,

My 2c worth:
a) official ROM's have SPL in them, so you don't need hardSPL to flash these
b) regarding "restore after ROM change", in reverse order:
if you restore a full backup from your existing installation after a ROM change, it will obviously restore all that is currently there - including the Vodaphone fluff
both Spb and Sprite offer "full restore after ROM change" options - however, registry changes from one ROM to the next make this risky. Most cooks will advise against it
Oke thank you for the answerd, will do a fresh install then after the rom update
SPB restore can let you choose what to restore, the necessary things will be contacts, sms, email and documents, you can skip the programs, registry and other non personal things, but like this you will need to reinstall all programs and configure them from scratch

Yes, that's the technically correct way.
After you've upgraded the ROM and re-installed all your apps, (say) weekly Spb or Sprite backups for a full restore are obviously viable. I've been doing this for about 5 years now - saved my bacon more than once.
Still, I agree that re-installing all the apps after a ROM upgrade is a real pain in the butt. People who change ROM's constantly must have another day phone on the side
I tried to update the generic NL R2A rom from my vodafone NL R2A phone but it doesn't work. It keep saying "No image file!".
I also got another question. Is it really necessairy to format my ms before flashing. Because I only got the hancock ms and it said not to be working again when I format the ms. Thats why I didn't format the ms yet and only tried without formatting.
I have read almost all tutorials but all said I must use the hard-spl but other forums posts said I don't need when using a official rom. Anyone can help me a bit further please?
