Is anyone aware of a program that will let you unlock your phone by using a gesture? Seems like TouchFlo should be able to do this, but it doesn't.

s2u2 (slide to unlock?)
s2u2 is too simple (a simple swipe across the bottom of the screen, besides the fact that it tells you how to unlock it RIGHT ON THE SCREEN).
I'm looking for a program that will unlock the phone if I make a more complicated gesture, such as drawing a backwards "S" or an "X" that starts from the bottom.
Any programmers out there willing to make an app like this?
This sounds really cool, hell maybe even having an option to preprogram a gesture. I'd be in on this.
That does sound cool. I don't password protect my phone but in a way this would be a simple protection mechanism.
Even something that locks it after XX seconds/minutes...
I agree. I'd love this feature. This could be done as a possible fork of S2U. Call it G2U. I'd still like to have the front screen of S2U.
i dont think this would be very hard with the S2U2 interface. i know you can easily adjust how far you have to slide the actuall slider, and im sure it wouldnt be very hard to make a different shape. You could also add a color that would blend in with the background and not be visible, this is easily dont already...
DUDE! You read my mind... I've been using a PPC H5555 for years utilizing the built in fingerprint reader to unlock the device.
I almost want to remove the security on my TILT because it is a hassle...
<<< Gesture to unlock will make the developer FAMOUS >>>
That would be beyond awesome.
OK, so it sounds like we're all in agreement that this would be a good thing.
Who's up to the challenge?!?
Has anyone sent a message to the guy that does the dev on SU2U. I think that would be a great place to start.

Good idea. I just PM'd him.
Jeff
I think this is a cool idea also. G2U would be a pretty interesting concept. I'm not sure if it could ever fully protect a phone, but it does make it harder, esp if it invokes upon start up and soft reset into locked status.
As an aside, in S2U2, you can change the graphics of both the slider and the slide path already. So, you could lock the screen and have an "invisible" slide to unlock button and path. I realize this isn't what G2U would be, and it isn't as secure as G2U would be, BUT it does provide a small measure of extra security. I might try this tonite. Not EVERYONE knows to Slide to Unlock!
microsoft already thought about that...i think thats one of the feature in wm7...(too bad it will take a hell lot of time to release )
Here's the reply I got from A_C, the developer of S2U2:

How about something that accepted hardkey presses & taps in quadrants of the screen & needed the sequence in the right order before unlocking?

Yeah, that would probably work too, but's not too much different than typing in a password to unlock. I'd like something more simple to perform.
Jeff
Has anyone talked to the person that made iTask? Maybe it would be easier to make it in flash lite, like what he does.
I'll give 10 bucks to whoever makes an app like this. Maybe a money pool, such as the driver bounty would be good. Anyone else want to pitch in?
EDIT: Make it 20 if you can edit it your own and customize it. Similar to writing using the transcriber.

I may be being totally daft, but I can't seem to find anywhere in the interface that has the supposed TouchFlo features. The contact app seems to be just the regular WM6 one.
Can someone please give me an example of where the TouchFlo features are used on the Kaiser?
It's pretty subtle, if you are in a long document, say contacts, you can touch the screen downward in a sweeping motion and the contacts should scroll down continuously. You should hear clicking like a roulette wheel, slowing down till it stops. (You can disable that sound). This works vertical and horizontal (if there is reason to scroll).
It's pretty subtle. Some have complained that it doesn't work well with IE and have loaded Opera-Mini to get that functionality to work better. I've tried both and they seem to work OK for me.
It's not very well implemented.
This is the difference between actually creating something useful and adding a feature just to have it on a checklist ("can scroll using flick like iphone") !
Thanks for the replies, I finally get it. It's pretty lame as-is, I really hope someone will manage to extend the functionality in a custom rom in the future.

It is not that lame, in my opinion. actually, it is rather more useful than the whole cube-thing implemented on the Touch. ie, if your in the car and try to get to a certain contact or scroll a word doc, it is a lot easier to just touch the screen with your finger rather than use the stylus to scroll using the scroll bars.
i like this feature and i dont consider it as a just-to-be-there feature.
I'm pretty sure my palm pda/phone from 5 years ago had Touch Flo

Drag the stylus anywhere on screen to scroll a web page. Increase viewable content on the screen with the small font option. Get essential starting tips through the Help menu.
Isn't that what TouchFlo does ?

imagine a piece of paper that you could only see though a small hole (screensize). if you pressed your finger down on the paper, and slide it toward you (down), the text on that paper would appear to scroll up, and vice versa...
by the time someone finds the reg tweak, we'll all probably be used to it...

TouchFlo=Iphone WannaBe Marketing Trick
Someone else said earlier and they were dead on: all these top of the line pocket pc /cell phone makers got blind sided by Apple's touch screen, which basically makes the Iphone.
So a smart alec at HTC said "let's whip out a touch flo phone, out comes the HTC Touch, and now let's plaster touch technology everywhere on each model as a marketing gimmick to keep up with the Jones' "
I mean 1 million Iphones sold since June 29th as of today...what choice did they have?
The reslut: Touch Flo technology a la cheap, not using the right screen (Iphone screens cost up the wazoo and are made by Balda of Germany) and is basically no different than the D pad...so NO, HTC phones do not have ANY touch tech. yet.

For me it is. especially if it is in internet explorer, where the scroll wheel jumps from link to link, while the touchflo scrolls pages. i know we can modify the scroll wheel behaviour to scroll pages as well, but as it came from the factory this is the behaviour.
plus, if u are driving, it is easier to just touch the display once rather than keep your finger pressed on the d-button or on the wheel.

Is there a way to customize comm manager (change from 6 button to 10 or change the buttons--replace data connection with 3G) other than using Advanced Config. I can do it through Advanced Config but wondered whether there was another way to do it on the fly that I am missing. Thx.
Did you try looking into the stickied thread at the top of the forum that has all the cab files??
There's a 10 buttom comm manager right there.
I know. I am looking for a utility that switches from the 10 to the 6 or changes the order of the buttons on the 10 or 6. Maybe I am not explaining it well enough ....
Why would you want to change between the two? The 10 button has it all, including disabling data connection and 3G?
Aesthetics. The 6 button on/off looks good with certain themes/roms. Not a huge issue. I guess not a big demand for it.
If you use Kaiser Tweak you can customize the Comm Manager (doesn't change from 6 to 10 buttons or vice versa) but you can re-order the buttons. Give it a shot.
Got it. Thanks.
... Is there anyone that found a way to make the 10-buttons CommManager "dpad-friendly" ?
It's so annoying : you can navigate the homepage of your PDA with the dpad, and then start the commmanager... and there : you're stuck !
Have to touch the screen to choose any of the items (wireless, data, bluetooth...)

Yeah, because it's SUCH a pain to point your finger at the screen and push.
Wow, it's amazing the things people complain about.
If I took your logic, I would ask why Kaiser has a hard-keyboard ? It's so easy for ppl to press the screen
...
I have the aluminum case, and the screen is behind a hardglass !
So you can give a try if you want... but I'd bet your won't even bend the glass.
You didn't say you had a hard case, did ya? I don't have one and I don't know anyone that does. Everyone I know uses the stylus on the screen, just like it's supposed to be used.
Just use AEB to assign a hardkey, I use the windoz logo key, double press toggles BT power, tripple toggles WiFi. You get the picture.
I'll give a try to AEB (my Win button is already reassigned, same for the camera button which triggers the CommMgr...)

Like I said, why would people buy a phone with real keyboard, as there's already onscreen keyboard... That's exactly same scenario.
My question was not about "how could I reeducate myself", but how to turn this smartphone into something even smarter...
Even the ComMgr on the HTC Tornado can be manager from the joystick... (running WM5)
So it's a shame if HTC did remove this so simple thing as focus-ordered buttons...

You bought it, didn't you? Why did you buy it? I'll tell you why - it's one thing to have an on screen keyboard, it's a totally different thing to have a real, tactile keyboard with real keys to give your fingers feedback. You're comparing apples and oranges. Your logic doesn't fly with me, sorry. You can't touch-type with an on screen keyboard (i.e. type by feel).

LOL. Thanks for the laugh. You made my night.
The OP had a question, and I answered it. If it's not what he was looking for, then he should learn how to phrase his questions in a better way.
I don't apologize for my wording. I am short and to the point.
Lastly, some people will complain about anything and everything. You can't help that or change that.
Ok fine, so you're apparently upset about people asking for tips & tricks... Then I assume your Kaiser was just perfect as-is right ?
(...so I guess you kept the stock ROM untouched, and didnt apply any of the great XDA-dev patches/fixes then)
Anyone with a more constructive feedback, like maybe importing the CommMgr of a different HTC pdaphone ?
I have the Tilt with the stock AT&T ROM. It does everything I need it to. I have, however, applied many of the tweaks and fixes available here. I ask very few questions and do LOTS of reading. I read almost every thread in this forum looking for little tweaks to make my phone even better than it already is.
I have no problems with people asking questions. That is what this forum is for. What bugs me is people who post the same question over and over without reading ANYTHING. (not that I was referring to you)
I was trying to be a little sarcastic with my first reply, but I guess you took it the wrong way.
So then, if you said I was posting without reading anything ...
Do you mean you were able to find a way ? (finaly we'll get something constructive)
I am not really new to XDA-dev, so I know how searching the place works...
Unfortunately, neither the 6buttons nor the 10buttons CommMgr is able to do (apparently) what I'm trying to get.
Hence the post...
Well I highly doubt that you will be able to switch between the 6 and 10 buttom comm mgr. They are both cab installs and require a SR after install.
What about RemE's suggestion? Did you try that? You could also remap the PTT button.
P.S. I wasn't referring to you when I said people don't read before posting.
After having a Touch a few months back, i thought the Diamond would be a breeze. NO such luck in my experience.
For example. On the main home screen. How do you edit that so it's just the clock or, to add more to the list that currently shows calendar and call history? I can't find any way to do this so if you can enlighten me, i'd really appreciate it.
What about when texting? Is there any way to make the keypad a different size? Personally i can't find a way to edit that. It's annoying that after adding your contacts name, you seemingly have 90% of the screen filled with the entry system and you have to mess about to get to the message section of the screen. Guessing i've missed something somewhere!
Zooming in on a photo... how is that done? Orange's CD ROM User Manual is vague to say the least so if you can assist here to, please do.
This thread could become a handy hints and tips chart for beginners if all feedback is good so if you have a question or some simple advice for settings and the way to go around things, chuck a note in and someone will be very happy to see the reply
1) Well if u flick ur finger in an upward motion on the home screen u'll notice the clock becoming smaller and will list all the list all ur appointments from ur calendar...
2) If u are not satisfied in the HTC Keyboard, u will need to look into other keyboards my fav personally is Touchpal from Cootek and there is even resco keyboard which is pretty gud.
3) You can only zoom in a picture when u r in the HTC Album, in order to zoom you will need to rotate your finger clockwise or anti-clockwise i am always forget which is for zooming so u will need chk tht out...
I hope these tips helps u out....

Hmmmmmm, i see. Shame that somehow we can't take the good things from the Touch like the Home screen as standard and have them in the 3D instead. If any cab compilers are reading this, maybe it's something that could be done?
Along those lines, maybe someone could rip out the original texting keyboard, the smaller more compact one... better for stylus use and enables you to see more screen. I HATE the big finger pad they've put on the Diamond. Is is really necessary to have it that big? Surely if you're going to use the stylus (i mean if HTC didn't want us to use one, then ALL the functions and menus would be larger, yes?), then why provide us with one in the first place?!?!!

Then can someone make a Cab. file like the slide to unlock but this time you gotta like hold a certain area of the phone's screen for like, lets say 5-10 sec. and it unlocks the screen, we can put a fake fingerprint sections where you place your finger and it unlocks the phone..you know, make it look like it has a fingerprint scan unlocker..
and then there can be like a bar in the bottoms saying "scanning" or something, then access granted..lol
I dont know I would give it a shot if I knew how to make apps or cabs...
lol, lets get the gps lag fixed before we start making fake fingerprint scanners.
there is an app where you slide ur finger in a certain pattern to unlock the phone...kind of like what the tmobile g1 has..its called throttle lock or something..maybe thats what ur looking for
You can't use the screen to scan fingerprints. However, I suppose you could use the camera to "scan" a finger. It would be difficult to actually code the algorithm to detect a certain fingerprint everytime with any accuracy. But with a good enough pic (black & white, high contrast, etc), I suppose it could be done.
Probably more awkward than useful...but would definitely make a nice show-offy app.
Slide to Unlock software (S2U2) is already out there. Here's the post. It's not a fingerprint scanner though.
The touch screen and driver report events as PenDown(pixely, pixelx), PenUp(pixely, pixelx)
You'd be putting on a big ol show to claim to read a fingerprint from that
Oooooh very good point by Da_G, and a definite topic ender. We would need multitouch functionality for this to work. and even then it'd be a bloody struggle. I'm still sticking with my initial response of not possible
What could be cool is that you scan your thumbprint, make an image of it, make a locking app that has you press the screen at a certain pressure and unlocks 1 sec later, so when you slide your finger off, it shows the scanned image of your thumbprint I thought the phone can also sense the pressure?

Wouldn't getting the same pressure all the time be really hard? Like you would have to basically set it to maximum pressure setting so that you can just press kinda hard on the phone? Maybe we can do what you said with image of the thumbprint and then make it so that you have to place your thumb in a certain quadrant of the phone for it to recognize or multiple quadrants with multiple variations of one thumb so you can say " oh it scans my finger three times for accurate analysis of my finger print" lol
There is a reason why there are devices with extra built-in biometric finger sensor.. even on touch screen devices like older iPaq Pocket PCs, some touch screen laptops (eg Fujitsu).. Touch screen is not possible to detect minute things like lines on fingers. Touch screen detects only area pressure..
and now we all wonder when touch screen will be able to detect the tiny lines on a thumb. Or if it would be easier to just have it detect the ph of your thumb and the phone registers that this person is my owner and unlocks. Or detects DNA... anyways, i believe nanotechnology will need to be implemented and atleast a decade for these to come about but when it does, it could be very interesting to see what people come up with.

I hate to continue this thread the community doesn't seem to like to discuss, but that seems quite possible since there are photo-recognizing programs on the PC, but they are not very reliable from what I hear. Doubt it'd be much better on a phone.

A lil bit off subject but along the same lines... are there any programs out right now that I can use my camera and do OCR to make a text or pdf file? it'd be sooo useful to have an app like that.
Is there a mod currently available to lock the touchscreen by toggle, while retaining display, and ability to use trackball and keypad? Merry Xmas!! Thanx!
You could break your digitizer, try dropping it face down a few times and see if it breaks it. =p
I'm not sure which files control the touch input, and don't know if removing them will decrease stability. You could try to take a look at the disassembally guide and see if there is a hardware mod you could do as well.
But I'm sure you will get the question of why you want to do that. It sounds like you want to make it like a blackberry type phone.

no, i def don't want a blackberry. I would just like having the screen on without the possibility of touch input sometimes. i.e when i put it in my pocket for a sec without locking the phone and bring it out and it's adding a widget, or on another screen. while using the keyboard it would also be nice to be able to lock the touch, especially if you are typing in more than one session so you cant disturb it by inadvertent swipes or touches. anyways it's just an idea and not something i'm willing to start breaking parts of my g1 to see if it will work. thought maybe someone else had the idea or maybe there was an app for that
