If the price of flash memory is dropping... - Off-topic

...then why are xda/htc/etc smartphones not coming packaged with 8gb and 4gb drives?
Its annoying to have to buy an micro or mini card to have the storage space that the phone should come with in the first place.
I'm kind of confused. What are we getting for the money?
flame me and i'll kill you

lazy people that want more money and give less
Sorry HTC but its the truth

very frankly, the market strategies of HTC are very poor....rather selfish.
what is there in a product if you don't support it well.
but they'll surely wake up when profits drop.

is 12 bucks for a 2gb Micro SD Delivered a good deal?

I h ope I'm not breaking a rule. I just want to share this deal with my brothers and sisters of xda.

Yes, $12 is a good deal! to bad I couldn't get that deal a year ago. I have since moved on to the 8gb Micro SD and find anything less than 4gb useless to me as I cant fit all the music and movies on it.
Thanks for sharing.
WOWZERS, I wish I was leet enough to get a 8gb. I find that I can't watch a ton of movies on the phone so I don't carry a lot of them, I can stream my music and movies via orbit and sirius, etc etc. So 2gb is enough. Now I will have a spare card.
I have (2) 1gb, (1) 2gb, (1) 4gb, and (1) 8gb Micro SD cards and I'm sure I'll get the next larger one that comes out just because I like making my Tilt happy. So I don't spoil myself, I spoil my Tilt...

soon 16gb will be released

probably a fake
seems good if its not fake, can always try researching a bunch of estores and compare prices or use pricewatcher or pricegrabber, etc to find best price.if you arent worried if you could be spending a lil bit over what its worth then go for it
Funny thing about these cards.... In a couple months people will complain about those prices. lol
6GB here and it works great.
thats a good price. Make sure that card wasn't anwhere near the fires of Mordor in Frodos pocket or something. That's hella cheap though.

Kaiser 32GB?

hi, support kaiser 32gb memory card? everywhere writing yes.. (support up to 32gb) but i need some help before i buy it..
Thanks
What kind of help ? Someone else to drop $ 100 and test it out ?
its heavy.. im 15. and i havent money everywhere.. i must need some positive result..
it theory it should
if it does
or if the brand you buy is compatible
is another question
wait until by chance a guy who bought the same
brand you want wander buy and post it works
or take a chance or get a smaller card
choice if yours
I understand you young and money is tight. we have all been there. My suggestion is to buy a couple of 16g ones and you are all good. What are you putting on it to need that much space? I have tomtom and it uses 2gig and 4 gigs of music (lets be honest, I will never listen to it all) and I still have 3 gigs left after apps are loaded on my 8 gig card.
Your choices are this: buy and try and see if it works or buy a couple of smaller ones that will do the job as well. Good luck and what ever you do I hope it works out.
InR
Yes it works
Thought it wouldn't - but can confirm 32Gb works on a Kaiser.

Did you go 8 or 16gb?

Just wondered how many went with the 8gb and how many went with the 16gb
I went with the 8gb because:
1) That $199 price is so damn sexy
2) I don't clutter up my electronics w/ excess rarely used music & movies
3) Dropbox / Google Drive / Skydrive / Box.net cloud storage.
I'm getting more and more into using the cloud. Didn't seem worth it to spend an extra $50.
16GB. 8GB and i'ts like i have my little ipod touch again.
8 gigs. Nothing to put on there... a few pdfs of school books and everything else is on cloud. I couldn't justify putting anything else on. lol
Don't forget that 8/16 GB is an overall flash storage capacity.
Judging by my Nook devices there will be about 5/13 GB available for user.
8gb
I went with the 8gb since I am getting it as kidtainment system for my toddlers apps, I figure even with the all those apps I will have plenty of room for some "lower quality" videos for him as well. Other uses will include the occasional eBook or magazine as well as for use as an xbmc remote and for the occasional browsing etc. Point being actual media storage is not a concern, and though a microSD slot would have been nice the trend seems to be away from it.
Just preordered 16gb (£209 including delivery).. 16gb not ideal but should be enough.. I would use it for movies and games when away on business and all sorts at home.. excited as hell now..

We pay a lot in tax and just generally get price gorged in the UK compared to the US.
Having said that, £159 to £199 is actually a pretty good price for a device with this spec in the UK . Got my order in already...
I'm so happy, I have just ordered the 16gb one today with my spare money from my 18th birthday (today ). Also, today I have just gone out and bought the galaxy s3 international with most of my birthday money (and money I have saved up the last year) I can't believe how cheap it is, I know that I will need the 16gb version. Wow, I can't believe what a good day this has been, the galaxy s3 and the nexus 7 I just can't wait for the amazing development to start on this tab, seen as how it is a nexus
Spare money from your birthday? Lucky, I've not had this much with all birthdays combined!
I'd go for 16gb.

Well, as I saw in checkout, the tax is £34 so if you subtract and convert £ to $, you will get $255. And price for 16GB in USA is $249 without tax. So I would say the price is big surprise... At least I was nicely surprised....
I preordered the 8gb at 4:30 this morning but I am debating weather I should change the order and go for the 16gb, I looked at my phone and tablet, not including the music on my phone, I have less than 2gb of data on each, so it looks like 8gb would be plenty for me but as its is impossible to add storage after purchase Im finding it hard to make up my mind.

I also ordered the 8gb version and still not sure if I should get the 16gb model. On my Sensation, if you don't count music, nandroid backups, etc. I'm using 3gb of storage on my SD card. I know it's only $50 but that could go toward something else (e.g., a new Kindle Touch with backlighting).
One way I decide when spending money is to put it this way: I'll give you either a Nexus 7 8gb and $50 or a Nexus 7 16gb. Which would you take?
16 for sure. With all the games that I'm going to have on it I will need all the space I can get.
I preordered a 16GB but I'm waiting on the phone right now to change it to the 8GB. I don't see myself putting any music on this thing and will most likely use it for web browsing and streaming videos. I'll save the money to buy the next Nexus phone instead since I'm in the market for a phone this year. I just hope they give us more than 16GB with the next GSM Nexus phone.
8 for me. I mostly use the cloud even when I had huge sd cards I would always stream unless absolutely necessary.

16GB costs $50?

Maybe this was discussed in another thread but I couldn't find it.
I know Google is said to be selling these at cost (at least the 8GB one), but does it really cost $50 to go from 8GB to 16GB?
1) They're not selling at cost (estimated profits are $15-$47 for the 8GB version)
2) It's very unlikely that the additional 8GB costs $50. This is something they call, among devices with no SD card option, "screwing you over".
I read that it cost Google $8-12 more for the 16gb
at $250, it's still a great deal for the hardware.

$100 (aka the same $6.25/extra GB that we're facing now).
I hope you're not seriously suggesting that we look to Apple pricing standards as something to be proud of.
Thanks to thebobp, raafaell and adiliyo for your thoughts.
xperiax10.awesome & Thador: My question was an honest one and I was hoping for serious responses.
I came from the Evo 3D forum expecting better ...but the retards will always be around. Nobody is trolling its just a simple question, if you can't answer it and want to dish out another answer, do it elsewhere
Different sources are claiming that there is either a very small profit or small loss on the 8GB, it'll depend from region i suspect and what the pricings have taken into account. If you're talking simply in terms of BOM, the 8GB costs $184 to make and their selling it for $199....profit you'd think, however factor in the $25 app credit along with other marketing and advertising costs and it does add up. VAT in the UK makes a difference too along with some sort of import duty to all the countries it will be sold in. At the end of the day it's all mixed in the books so we can never know the full truth.
Here's your link
http://www.fudzilla.com/home/item/27820-nexus-7-costs-$184-to-build
It's stilla great deal, But I think it's kind of cheap not to include a SD card slot.
Here's a newer teardown cost appraisal: http://allthingsd.com/20120711/googles-nexus-7-costs-152-to-make-ihs-isuppli-teardown-finds/
Basically the 8GB version is the loss leader to get people interested and then they buy the 16GB version just in case. No different than any other retail operation.
Marketing is the study of taking the most money from the most people in the least amount of time.

You're absolutely right. How DARE Google try to make any sort of profit at all, while still giving us by far the best 7" tablet we've seen yet?!
Plus, as has been reported, any actual hardware profit goes to ASUS not Google

It cost Google like $185 to make the 8gb model. With your logic that's 15 dollars profit per device (before shipping)... What about the price of packaging each device? What about the price of distribution to third party retailers? What about the price of marketing and advertisement? And that free $25 Play Store credit, and other freebies... it might be free to us but money for those items still comes from somewhere. They're selling these for a loss...
They are in business. Since when was it *NOT* okay to make a profit when you manufacture a product?
Whatever it costs for them to make, market, and ship internally, both products are well within a fair market value.
One other thing:
If the 16GB model were $208 ($8 being the presumed cost of the additional RAM), would anyone buy the 8GB model?
Not likely. And all the 8GB models produced would sit around in a warehouse collecting dust.
When I learned of the cost for the Nexus 7, I thought hell yeah, $200 for a nice tablet. I'm in. Then when I learned it was 8 gb with no sd card, I thought, "crap, I don't want to run out of room after I put a couple big games on it. Feel cramped and out-grown while the rest of the specs are still good." I have used an old, smaller sd card on a phone before and know the frustrations of running on limited space. Always having to scour the folders to delete anything extra. I didn't want that limitation, so I went with the 16gb even though a part of me was screaming, "Are you crazy! You are paying 25% more for the exact same thing with a little bit more space!"
Even now that I know we will be able to use a usb flash drive for expandable storage, I am happy I went with the 16gb just because I won't want a dongle on it all the time. In comparison to the 8gb version, the 16gb version is no where near as good of a price. That being said, it is still a good deal, if you compare it to everything else on the market except the 8gb nexus7. I think the extra $50 is going to be a big difference to me in not having to worry as much about space and I am glad I ponied up the extra.
Price seems ok, no complains..
All,
FYI, the build COST of iPads is just 320 dollars!!!

First, for a genuine answer. No, it does not cost Asus $50 to add an extra 8 GB of flash storage.
$250 for the Nexus 7 is still a bargain either way.
For a more personal subjective answer. Asus/Google can charge what they want. You vote with your wallet, it's that simple.
So to all those people saying people are getting screwed over buying the 16 GB version.
Is Google forcing you to buy the 16 GB at gun point? No.
Will you die of hunger if you don't buy the 16 GB version? No.
Does the 8 GB version have a time bomb that explodes, punishing you for not buying the 16 GB version? No.
Will god kill a kitten for every person that pays for the 16 GB version? No.
Like I said above. You are given a choice. You vote with your wallet. It really is that simple.

I agree with you. I think the tablets are a very good value. I was just asking a simple and honest question.
I do feel that google or Asus did kind of gouge my eyes out with the price jump by bit including the the microsd. Even with everyone saying that they have to make a profit, which I agree, I still think that it was unnecessary for the price of the 16gb model and still without a microSD slot.

Will you be upgrading to the Note 5 from the note 4?

If this is true, I see myself passing.

Personally I don't need a larger battery or a glass back. I do need my removable batter and micro SD slot.
Samsung is just trying to pad it's bottom line now. They're not selling like they used to do to their premium prices. Now they're trying to make it up by changing premium prices for memory. Too bad Samsung screwed itself when they went after their own American team when they had that ultra successful marketing campaign.
If the 128gb version is affordable, as in not $1000 and Tmo doesn't make put down like $400 to get it, then I might. I don't know though. This stupid trend of non-removable everything really pisses me off, if I wanted a GD iPhone I'd buy one. I do love samsung, but if they kill the card slot then I might just go with the G4. I love having a home button though, and a stylus too. No other brands have them so I'll most likely just suck it up and grudgingly upgrade. Damnit.
I'm definitely gonna wait till plenty of other people buy it first just to see the consensus on it, and to let development take off a bit first because I'll drink bleach before I go without root.
