Hey all,
Got my new diamond. Love it to bits. Only one bit that's started to drive me round the bend. There must be a solution somewhere.....
I was quite pleased to see the text message conversation feature - you know the one where you can type beneath a text you've recieved to reply and reffer to the previous text as you're doing so, also if you scroll up you'll see your whole convo with that contact. Nice feature....
However:
The window for replying in is SO SMALL that I can't actually read what I'm typing. I get almost the lenght of a whole letter in it so i can kind of read a few words but scrolling is impossible.
The scroll up and down arrows are right next to each other.
It's highly impractical and almost impossible to use. Worst when keyboard and T9 are activated.
Anyone know how to fix this?
I tried clicking on the black divider line between the original message and the reply you're typing and dragging it up.
No luck....
All help greatfully recieved (doubtless I'm missing something?)
There is a solution (have you searched?)
You need to edit thread_sms.htm in the windows folder. You'll need to use Total Commander to edit the file because it's a protected ROM file.
Or just use the newer, smaller keyboards that are just as practical and take less of the screen.

Not sure which keyboards you mean but it won't help since the reply section of the page is a fixed height. Altering it so that you can see more than one line of the reply can be very useful.
On the subject of keyboards, I want to recommend TouchPal (again) - not only is the keypad resizable (by dragging), it has better T9 input and the word candidates don't stick up above the top of the keyboard. This means the window resizing works properly and it doesn't have the bug on tapping the screen when selecting a candidate in Opera.

I think he's referring to new the keyboard in the 2.00.421.1 Diamond ROM image. pistonripper has cooked a custom, lightweight version.

Yep searched google repeatedly before I came here. Figured google would turn results up from here but hey, could just be my dyslexia. Thanks for the help. I'll see what I can find on here about total commander and thread_sms.htm to figure it out.
Wish me luck
Thanks a lot guys! That solved it I REALLY appreciate the help.
If anyone else has the same problem it's as the guys said: google 'total commander pda' get the .cab file from their site (you want the Pocket PC one obviously).
Install it by popping it on your diamond and clicking it on file explorer.
Then use the file menu to search for 'thread_sms.htm'
When it shows up click the edit button (first icon, the one to the right of the word 'show' bit of paper with a pen next to it).
I changed the height on one of the lines contained 'composesubject' and width 98% from 35 up to 70. Saved and went back into sms.
Tada.
Beutiful three lines.
Thanks again to all who helped and search for thread_sms.htm on this site if you need more help as a lot of the guys have solved it.
Lastly for the google folks here are a few words that might help them find this:
diamond sms window screen too small one line tiny conversation text message reply can't read
Nice one
I wasn't sure where a good place to post this would be and haven't found a thread in the Raphael or Diamond forum on this topic so hopefully I don't get flamed for starting a new thread. I asked 4 days ago in "Let's see your ATT Fuze Screens" thread on how to edit my dialer skin to make the number keys transparent so I can view my wallpaper behind it so it flows with my theme (this was after a screenshot from someone with a dialer I want and have not been able to find). I did not get back a response. Maybe I posted in the wrong thread. I am a noob, but I am trying to learn how to do things for myself. I have read the wiki and countless threads (yes sometimes the entire 200 pages), used search function within threads, within the specific forums and within the entire xda site. Alot of results come up and none are helpful. Maybe I am not using the right search terms. In any case, I've tried to find a dialer I like, but to no avail, so I would like to try and create my own. Yes, I would like to just be able to install a cab and be done, but I am willing to try and figure it out on my own with some guidance. If someone could please point me in the right direction to do this (maybe the files I have to edit and I can try and figure out how to do that myself from other threads) I would be very greatful. I would like to have a transparent key pad on the phone screen and the screen when receiving a call and be able to place my own wallpaper behind it (Need landscape as well since I have the Fuze). I think this is something others would want as well to keep there personalized themes consistent. If this thread is redundent, please point me to the existing thread.
Thank you.
Since nobody else is replying, I will at leas share what I know. Using your phone's file explorer, navigate to the device's "windows" folder and look for the two dialer .bmp files named "Assets_dialer_Normal.bmp" and "Assets_Dialer_Pressed.bmp". Those are the two files that you need to edit or replace to get the dialer to your liking. Note: there are also other files named similarly "_Assets_dialer_Normal.bmp" etc. so don' mistake the files with the underscore at the beginning of the file name. I hope this points you in the right direction. Be advised that the biggest obstacle will be finding a way to overwrite those protected files. Good luck
IM ACTUALY IN THE PROCESS OF CUSTOMIZING MY DIALER..
IM SKINNING 'UGGALO_x WHITE S2A CDMA'
customizing the dialer is no problem. the same as skinning any of the rest of the display, to get around permissions issues just use Total Commander CE to overwrite the existing file.
transparency is a problem as the dialer pad is comprised of bmp files and as such there is no transparency like you would find with gif or png (unless someone has found a transparency color and i've just missed it).
it may be possible to use your current background image as the background of the bitmap to overlay the buttons onto, thus giving the appearance of transparency. this of course comes with the downside that if you decide to change your background you would have to change your phone screen to one that matched. in addition it would not be just the files mentioned by tx_dbs_tx that you would need to modify in this scenario as the dialer only takes up the lower... oh, 3/5ths of the screen? you would also need to modify the "Calls and Contacts" / "All Calls" / "Speed Dial" fields and the field where the number you are dialing is displayed. i am not presently aware if this has even been attempted yet.
personally, i have only attempted a color change to the dialer to date, but have been successful with that. if somehow nobody else responds before i can check on the unknowns above, i will come back and let you know what i find.
Thanks
Thanks to everyone who replied. I will try and see if I can mess around with these files. I found a dialer to use for now. See thread below. I need to figure out what files are for the slide to answer screen in portrait and landscape and the dialing screen (the screen when you make a phone call). I think that is all of the screens associated with the phone. Please correct me if I am wrong.
The Vista Abstract Dialer by [email protected] found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=463958
I can't upload the zip of the files. Just go to the thread above to download and break down CAB
I find that when i add a new appointment there is a bug with the text input.
1. When you select new the screen is showed with the subject line highlighted.
2. You enter the subject and then if you select a new field e.g. time, location etc...
3. The text from the subject moves to the new field you selected.
anyone else find this.
Using the shipped 6.1 ROM
Same problem here! Usually happens when the subject contains more than one word. Usually, the last word is automatically moved to the field I choose. But it doesn't always happens, which bugs me even more.
Vasco
Happens here too, no resolution yet
Same problem here.
My current workaround is to type another space character before i skip to the next field.
Hope it gets fixed in the next official ROM.
Bug not present in my cooked ROM, hope it will be fixed in the official! Everybody's got the right to have a working device
Hi Friends, We have just published our first android application (To replace default dialer and call log) in market and looking forward to add several more features in coming few days. I would like to invite beta testers and other enthusiasts to test the application on various android phones. Any feedback and suggestions from the experts and users here will be greatly appreciated.
Easy Dial is an advanced dialer and call logging application for Android based phones. The application tries to overcome the usability problems in the default applications provided by Android for this purpose. It offers all of the standard features in default dialer & call log with much more in a user friendly and efficient way.
Dialer Features
1) T9 Search from the standard number pad.
2) Fast search without any lagging between the dialing actions.
3) Check notes associated with contacts on the same screen
4) Ability to dial multiple numbers associated with contacts from the same screen (Use horizontal swipe or scroll track ball to switch through numbers)
5) SMS or Email a contact directly from the dialer screen
6) View contact cards or call history directly from the dialer screen.
7) Customizable options for fonts, search criteria, button actions and so on
Call Log Features
1) Advanced call log with grouping. No more multiple instances of the same record in call log.
2) No maximum limit for number of entries in call log.
3) View complete history of a log entry with summary of different call types.
4) Integrated Search feature in call log. No need to scroll through the long list of call records to find a desired entry.
5) Delete single or all instances of a record from the call log.
6) Ability to delete all entries prior to a certain record.
Coming Soon
1) Integrate Favorites
2) From the dialer screen, ability to search last dialed numbers along with contact search. Similar to HTC Smart Dialer.
3) Higher degree of customization.
4) Improved skin with more appealing UI
5) When in call log, ability to mark certain records as protected so that delete action does not remove those records.
6) Long press on 1 to dial the voicemail.
7) Add full fledged tab for contacts which will overcome the default contacts issues. Like missing numbers beneath the names.

Description
Easy Dial will let you dial a contact or individual number with the ease of T9 search on your regular number based keypad. Application can get integrated with the default call button and pressing the button then after will directly open the Easy Dial window. To dial a number, just start typing the first few letters of the contact name and it will search for the matching records in the contacts database. If no record is found, it will let you dial the individual number from the same window. The notes associated with individual contacts are also displayed on the same screen.
Application also allows the users to create text messages or emails directly from the dialer screen. Thus eliminating the extra steps to open the respective application, choose the contact and so on.
It maintains its own call log which overcomes various usability issues in the default call log application. A significant improvement is call grouping. The default call log creates a new entry for each and every call, be it from the same number. Like if you dialed 123 for 100 times, it will appear in call log for 100 times. Easy Dial fixes this problem by offering a call grouping mechanism. Here, each number will appear only once in call log and then clicking on the entry will open the history of the calls for the selected numbers. Apart from this, it also offers a summary of total calls with duration (in, out and missed) on the same screen. An advanced search mechanism is also provided apart from standard filters for incoming, outgoing and missed calls.
Would like to help but I can't find the app in market place? Is it available to Canada? Would you like to also post a link to your apk file so people can install it manually as well?

Could you add contact pics? i like this app!
great app thank you very much, from what i see just now , its much better than the OEM dialer. One remark and its not a huge thing , can you see if you could improve the delay while pressing the numbers , they are a bit laggy, but it may be just me. Thanks again

Love the call log, dislike the dialer. Any chance you could make the dialer larger and make the contact scroll a pull down tab like the launcher?
Hi, could you make it search by numbers as well? Also, a search by initials would be awesome (like HTC's). An example would be:
John Doe
And I'm able to search by entering "5" and then "3" (J, D). Thanks!

We are working on the new theme to improve the user experience as well as the looks of the application. Our fellow forum member "MOONSSPOON" is working on this and has come up with some excellent ideas. I think that will somehow solve the issues with it.
If you could please give some more feedback regarding the dislike, we will make sure to fix those things.
For the pull down tab, that is some thing we have stored for phase 3 or 4, but that will be there for sure. As for now, working on other important features.
Thanks.

Yep, HTC Smart dialer functionality is in under development and we are close to finish that. However, for now it won't be for initials. This is to search the unknown numbers in call logs. Like when you press 5 and 3, it will search for all contacts with the combinations of "JKL" and "DEF" as well as all numbers in call log with 53 in it.
So stay tuned

Im using an HTC Dream with CyanogenMOD 4.0.2 no APPS2SD yet. Like I said its a great dialer and logger.
This is going to be a great application guys. Stay tuned!
Screenshots?
My issue with the dialer: Numbers are a bit on the small side, would prefer them to be about 2/3 of the screen... scrolling window for contacts is too. Basically, it just seems like there is too much interface crammed into one screen. I think the pull tab for contacts will be a big help. I'd also like it if when I dial a number the numbers are displayed immediately (instead of "sorting" through contacts first) so If I accidentally hit a wrong digit I know immediately instead of having to wait for the numbers to display after a no-match on contacts sort.
I look forward to the next version with new artwork, the guys who are helping out do great work and I'm sure things will change for the better. All in all I'm liking the app, GREAT JOB!
This is very well put together, I cant wait to see what you guys do for the update. No lag at all with it. Good Job Guys!

I agree on the too much info crammed in one screen but like MOONSSPOON mentioned in one of his messages "Its a fun battle finding the perfect balance between fitting the most information possible on the screen and making sure its not a pain to use" So let us see what we can come up with in next version with improved UI.
The idea to show a number immediately sounds good and we will work on it. As for the pull tab in list, that is definitely in the plans but on low priority for now. As for now, I feel there are other features we need so working towards it step by step will be best way out.
Thanks again for your suggestions and we will try our best to keep it up to your highest expectations.
Name: TrueDialer
Hi everyone,
TrueDialer is a free and smarter T9 dialer app. With the app you can quickly find and call your friends by entering parts of their name in a T9 combination. With the latest version you will even be able to send them text messages.
But in addition to this, when calling a phone number not already in your phonebook TrueDialer will automatically search white and yellow pages worldwide and even let you opt-in to the enhanced phone number directory from TrueCaller. From there you can easily save your new friends number with name pre-filled straight to your phonebook.
We'd love to have your feedback on our new app, what do you think about it and what can we improve?
Tips:
-First start can take a few seconds since your contacts are loading, please be patient
-Double tapping on the input field will clear it so you can start a new search quickly
-You can enter the name in numbers starting from anywhere so if your looking for the contact "Andrew Hill" in your phonebook you can type 263 for "and" or even 455 for "ill".

Hello,
The app doesn't work with French Yellow/White pages. Have I missed something ?
Thank you.
Thanks. It looks promising, but unfortunately it doesn't work well on my HD2. I get Black square No response most of the time. When I type, names start to show, but disappear after some time with the black square and No response label.
I am on HD2O rom and use Exchange and Live Mail accounts. Contacts are synchronized with Exchange and Pushed on update.
EDIT (FIXED): If I am on wireless behind Firewall first time I install this app then it is behaving like described despite the enhanced search is turned off. But if then I go on Data connection (no wireless) it works! When the popup dialog asks if I want to use enhanced search or something and I click Cancel then it works even connected to wireless behind the firewall.
That is only a minor bug I guess but I got it the very first time I installed this app.
A few suggestions to make it better:
1. Make Contacts pics optional (turn on or off in settings) - it will look neater in a name list and possibly faster.
2. Make letters in names that match the typed number sequence in accent colour like the original dialer in search results - it is very handy and looks very pro.
3. Make numbers bigger and without the textbox frame. They should be at least font size used in name list for names. It is a search field, and people will type 5-6 numbers at most and not 25 or 30 like now.
4. When you type for a very brief moment I can see Searching online despite all online searching turned off. Is it a bug?
Hope this helps... It is a very good app. Thanks again.

Hi there and thank you for your suggestions!
1. Coming in the next update!
2. Also on the way!
3. The reason this is a textbox is because some users want to be able to paste a number to search for, a action that is currently not possible without a textbox. But I'll make the text size bigger in the next update!
4. The application can search online even though you have enhanced search off. The difference is that it will then only search in public white/yellow pages directories which are very limited in quality.

Great!
4. So it is a T9 dialer WITH online Phonebook search at all times.
I would prefer a T9 dialer WITH OR WITHOUT online Phonebook search at all times.
A couple of reasons:
a) Truecaller doesn't work for all countries. I couldn't find anything for any of my contacts. So it is actually useless for the most of the time.
b) Some people don't want data connection at all times or have no data connection or want to minimize costs and need only t9 dialer. Roaming for example?
c) Perhaps it is even faster without an online connection?
d) Just to make some people happier with a setting to disable all data connections?
Cheers!
Please add a unread call counter and mobile operator indicator into the tile (as the original windows phone 7 telephone live tile): I would like to use TrueDialer to replace completely the MS one

Will add the current mobile operator, however I am not sure how reliable this can be as the local tiles are only updated once every half hour.
Regarding the unread call counter, this is currently not possible because of limitations within the WP7 API platform.

Windows Phone doesn't return information on if the user actually did press call or not which is why you see it added to the history list even if you didn't answer. I'm sure this will be fixed in future versions of WP7 and we'll of course update TrueDialer then!
