OK, this does sound like a real noob question, but I've spent quite a while searching on this and come up with nothing other than a couple of posts where others complain about the same thing but with no answers.
The Windows Live today screen plugin is so frickin large, and most of the space it takes up is empty anyway - it just looks dumb. Is there any way to make it smaller (other than making the default screen size for the device ridiculously small)?
Cheers
Rowan
Ok, so I'll answer my own question. I did a bit of digging in the registry and found you can change the height of the plugin by:
1. Remove the plugin from the Today screen
2. Open a registry editor
3. Goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Today\Items\Windows Live
4. Change the value of key 'Height' (default is 50)
5. Re-enable the plugin on the Today screen - it should now be a different height.
I found I can set it to 44 without cutting off anything. Not a massive reduction, but does make it look a bit better.
Cheers
Rowan
I find that I can fit Windows Live and 2 other items on the Home Screen without having a scroll bar. Oh thats with HTC home. So I think the default size for normal items is 25px? Did you try that size?

I have a question about choosing your own backgrounds for the Today screen. I searched the board, but couldn't find a suitable answer. Hopefully someone will help.
The phone is a T-Mobile Wing (WM6) for reference.
In the "Today" settings, you can check the little box for "Use this picture as the background". No matter what built-in theme I use, no matter what picture I choose, the image displayed on the home screen is washed out. The default images associated with a particular theme are bright and vibrant. But any other picture chosen looks dull and ugly.
What is the reason for this? Any way to correct this behavior?
Thanks,
TimmyZ
Apparently, this is normal behavior. to get around it,go to Programs and open Pictures and Videos. Now navigate to the picture that you want to use as your background. Click and hold on the thumbnail with your stylus until the menu pops up, and then select Set as Today Background. The next screen will let you set the transparency level of the image.
you may have to mess around with the values a little to get what you want.
Good Luck!
Many thanks!
I never would have guess that was the answer.
I had the same question too, I will add this to the FAQ
I'm not sure where I saw that, originally. I'd like to take credit, but I am sure I saw it either here or over at Howard Forums.
It's not exactly intuitive, though, is it?
If only there was a way to use different pictures in landscape/portrait mode... that would be kinda cool
you know i have been wondering about this too for a while. The transparency setting doesn't help me though. I wish it did. For some reason the pictures i select for the background always have a some sort of default zoom so the whole picture is not visible. I tried different sizes of the same picture but it didn't really help. Windows mobile should have a setting for the background picture for tile, stretch, and center like regular windows does. that might solve the problem i am having.
To stop the picture zooming go to nonags.com and search for a program called PIXresizer. Get the picture you want and adjust it to sixe 240*320. it will fit perfectly!
hey man thanks i was wondering how to do that. i thought there was no way to change it!
Not a Problem
Hello everyone, i asked this question in the 'post your today screen' thread but got no answer so will try asking here:
I recently installed the htc home customiser and changed a few things around and generally had a play with it to see what i could create from my today screen. I then decided i was happy with how the original htc one looked so i changed it back. Unfortunately i have a slight problem.
Originally, under the htc home section i had tasks, appointments, tomtom, etc etc showin up and there was a scroll bar on the right hand side that allowed me to scroll down the list, all while keeping htc home in the same position at the top. Now though, i have a scroll bar that extends all the way up the right hand side of the screen whereas before it only went as far as the bottom of htc home. It now covers up part of the date and the sound settings button. When i scroll down my list of shortcuts, it now also scrolls htc home also. (i hope my description makes sense)
It is very annoying and also makes my home screen look ugly. Does anyone know how i can get it back to how it used to be?
thanks very much in advance!
You can fix this by updasting the registry directly. There may be another way, but off the top of my head, I don't know.
Check your entries under the registry item: HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Today/Items
Under there, you will see an entry for every Today plugin you have available in your Today settings window.
Select one and you see it has entries called:
- Enabled
- Flag
- Order
- Selectability
- Type
under each one.
- Enabled denotes if its checked for your Today screen (1 is on, 0 is off)
- Order denotes the sequence it is on the Today screen. The lower the number the higher on the screen, so usually, HTCHome is the lowest enabled since it at the top.
- Type denotes whether it is one that is "movable" or not.
Type is the one that you need to modify. Type can be 0 (moveable) or 5 (non-movable). Type 0 ones can be moved up and down in the Today settings screen, where as Type 5 ones cannot.
The issue is that if the Today screen content is too much to fit on the screen, it auto adds the scroll bar. BUT it will only make the part of the screen occupied by movable activated plugins scrollable.
Before you customized, it HTCHome was likely a Type 5, and it was Order 1 (or something low since its at top). And all others were Type 0. Thus the scrollable section DIDNT include the HTC Home. Somehow, your HTCHome type is now 0, so it is scrolling along with everything else.
Hope this helps. Of course, manually modifying the registry has inherent danges, so be careful, and I take no responsibility if you mess up (disclaimer ).
This might be configurable and modifiable via HTC HOME Customizer app itself, but not sure...I just know the above is how I would fix it if I needed to.
Cheers for that mate, i will have a look tomorrow and see if i can sort it out.
in the home customizer go to the "options" tab and check "Lock plugin on the today screen" ... this will solve your problem!
Today screen keeps scrolling up
I don't know if this is the right post to ask, but you guys seemed pretty knowledgeable about today screen...
What happens is that whenever I scroll down (with the scroll bar) my today screen, it keeps scrolling back up to beginning screen automatically.
Only way to avoid this is to scroll all the way to the bottom and then it stops there. Then I can scroll up to see my today plugins which are in the middle (e.g. if you can scroll 4 times down - 4 screens of plugins - and I want to see my plugins which are 1 screen down the initial today screen, I have to tap all the way down and then tap up 2 times to see the plugins I should have seen tapping just 1 time).
This is so annoying. I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

This is for mbernstein:
You hijacked the thread but since the op had his issue resolved I can offer you just a little input. I had the same problem you mention. It started after I installed a few SPB programs. I'm not sure if it was the Pocket Plus, Mobile Shell, or something else but it was definately an SPB proggie. Once I uninstalled the programs the issue went away. I'm disappointed because they are good softwares.
Thanks. This should be the case. But it is a shame as Spb softs are quite good (otherwise).
Yes, I unchecked SPB today plugins and it took a long time (right one) for the screen to go "home". thanks.
You have to try those to believe how good the Winterface application is. I saw the review on Tiltsite.com today, downloaded it and immediately loved it. It is extremely finger friendly, the interface is very intuitive and beautifully designed. It also uses minimum amount of system resource thus is very efficient.

Their FunContacts is also a gem to have. Extremly finger friendly, smooth scrolling of the contact list like the iPhone. It absolutely replaces the old school "stylus-required" contact application included in WM6.1.

I've also tried their Zoomboard application, I think it's a good concept, however there is room for improvement. It is still quite slow to type on the Zoomboard application. However the accuracy of the text is improved dramatically because of the zoomed in text let you see what you've pressed on the screen. But it still can't beat Kaiser/Tilt's excellent keyboard for typing.

Enough said, I strongly encourage people to try it out. It will be a investment well spend. They also have a whole lot of other nicely designed applications on their webpage, check them out too.

seems like alot to spend on a couple of good apps that already exist freely...iContact, HTC album (for the photo thing) and even the (Samsung Glyde copy) button interface all exist free of charge. I'd have to see better to be convinced to put down $40 for 2 apps.
how do you install over an existing GUI... today screen , start menu, taskbar, etc???..
does it wipe them all out?
can you go back easily?
tahnx

I don't know what to say other than, yes, no, yes!
Conflicts
Do you know of any conflicts with this app? I have HHC installed right now.

You slide your finger in an arc to enable the interface from your home screen or anywhere else. You can click okay button and easily go back to normal interface if you choose to do so.
When phone is unlocked in Winterface, you can "slide to unlock" the phone with a touch of a finger.
I installed this over Garmin's DK1 WM6.1 cooked rom, so far everything works smooth as silk. Garmin's DK1 includes HTC Home v2.0.1812282.1 that I enabled in my home screen. This app run dependent of HTC Home plugin so there is no problems that I found.
In my opinion this app totally replaces HTC Home just because it is much more intuitive (it displays # of new message you got or # of missed calls you have and stuff like that). Couple finger movement after you can reach almost any application on the phone.
I don't work for this company or anything... Just think it's a really cool app to try.
And after couple hours of useage, here is a little short list of pros and rooms for improvement:
Pro -
Extremly finger friendly, smooth flow, elegant design layout.
Low memory useage, fast start up anywhere in the OS.
Very intuitive interface, texts under icons are extremely useful, compare to some other apps who only incorporated icons.
Love to be able to mix and match the apps I need and put them in order I want.
Room for improvement -
Slide to unlock button will disappear if a phone call caused the phone to lock itself, the phone would also lock itself unwanted after a phone call is in progress. It is annoying because when you want to press the keys on the screen, you find the phone locked with slide to unlock.
Contrast of the default icons are rather low (The whites are a bit above mid gray color)
Would be nice to flip from first page to last and then from last to first in one direction.
Would be nice to have option to display non-clear type fonts, my eye don't see well under clear type fonts.
Too bad SMS-Chat and FunContact have problem displaying typed text in landscape orientation in windows mobile 6.1 device (no problem in 6.0 though), or they would work great alone side Winterface.

so, how do i get that display of clock and slide to unlock?
edit :: wait, i get it.. this doesnt come w/anything else..
i like it -- really fast and nice to look at..
thanx..
Hmm,
I found quirks about the FunContact... Clear Type fonts used in that application will make all the typed in text display go blank when viewed in landscape mode... not recommended......

doesnt that always happen in landscape + clear type ?

I think it does, the system wouldn't even let me enable clear type on landscape mode... Maybe that's why all those apps that use cleartype in landscape mode would not display typed text properly

I personally LOVE the Zoomboard because of it's accuracy when typing one-handed (usually while driving). Obviously, I also prefer the regular hard keyboard, but we all know that's not always an option.
What free software that is similar to Zoomboard are you talking about?
Hi,
I've searched and found the way of changing fonts in the pop-up menu of my HTC Diamond.
However, the selections fonts (the similar to V shapes and the arrows for navigation in the pop up menu) are still in big size... does anyone know how to edit their size as well?
Thanks a lot!
Anyone pls?
Unfortunatelly I have the same problem. I want to have a perfectly clean WM 6.1 system, fully stylus-operated. I have already disabled all the "garbage" like TochFlo etc., I have decreased the pop-up menu font size (using Schap's Adv Config Tool, but that can be easily done with many other progs like SK-Tools etc.) but I still cannot do anything about those stupid large "arrows" and "V-signs" (like in the checkbox list). They remain the same big size, as it was before decreasing the pop-up menu font.
Really nobody knows how to decrease their size as well???
Just a quick suggestion, go to settings, system and screen. Then go to text size, change it down by one nouch. See if that helps
Unfortunatelly no - the popup menu font remains the same (but that I know how to controll over SK-Tools) and also the arrows/v-signs remain the same - very large that is
advanced config will let you change the size of the font in the popup window
This is what you're looking for:
HKLM\System\GWE\"WidgeSz"=0.
Drove me crazy for days too until someone pointed me in the right direction.

Jeez thanks man! That's exactly what I was looking for! Problem solved!
Hello all,
Just wondering if anyone knows the registry key (or other) to adjust the vertical spacing of the separator (horizontal line) between items in a menu. My Rogers Touch Diamond came out of the box with terribly altered menu font sizes and various other items with the intention (I'm assuming) to make it more touch friendy. The problem is the menus were never designed to be this way, so it appeared very sloppy and out of place. I finally managed to find the various registry keys to bring font sizes and selection dots and check marks back to the normal size (as per my previous HTC Touch) with the exception of one thing: the spacing above and below the horizontal separator line.
The first attached image ("Old.jpg") shows how the menu previously looked on my Touch. The second image ("New.jpg") shows how my Diamond currently looks. You'll notice that everything is basically the same now, except for the space above and below the horizontal line.
I did some searching, and came across the "SepYMrg" key in HKLM\System\GWE\Menu. The MSDN site defines this key as "the margin of white space above the menu separator line", which sounds like what I am looking for (or at least half of it). The key did not exist in my registry but, after adding and adjusting it, the result was still not what I'm after; instead of adding more "white space" above and below the line, it seemed to make the line thicker. The third attached image ("Adj.jpg") shows the result.
Does anyone know how I can make the necessary adjustments to get my Diamond's menus looking like the old ones? Any help would be much appreciated, as always.
Regards,
Bump.
I'm sorry to keep bumping this thread, but I'm hoping eventually it may catch the eye of someone with the answer.
Anyone?
