Hello all. I am a newbie, exciting as that sounds! Anyways, this is my out cry, possibly to some of the major contributors (if possible), maybe even some of the ROM developers out their. My goal is simple...making your life easier, and less stressful with us newbies.
Anyways, here is what I would like to contribute to the forum. I would like to write up a Wiki of free software, and how to install and so forth for XDA-Developers. I would gladly take control of this, link to the downloads and so forth, but would like some help from the seniors here, since I don't really know a ton about this stuff. However, from what I see here (daily for about 4 months) is that generally, the major issues are finding software and what it actually does, and I think this could help a ton! Let me know through PM or this thread if you are interested in helping me out, as well as helping a lot of people out, I would think. I do know the current Wiki does provide a tools review section, but I think a general link location, title, version, release date and brief description page would be helpful.
Much of that work has already been done in the existing Kaiser Wiki. I'm sure that if you wanted to maintain a matrix of software, installation instructions, version numbers, etc. and keep it updated, the powers that be would consider it a worthwhile addition. As for links to the software, many (most?) are already on the Wiki.
i think its a good idea but most of which are already on either the wiki's or stickies...as well as other threads in other sections...much of this wont be needed of people just searched and dig a bit deeper than one page of reading...a lot of answers are out there just need to search harder or refine the search
I do live a lot by the wiki, I just find it to be a bit clumsy, since it is VERY overwhelming, especially from a new person stand point. I was thinking of a simple page, that listed the following, work in progress, let me know what others think first.

Would it be big? Probably, but I think it could be very helpful as well.
here's a good place to start:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Must_have_tools
this is linked from the hermes wiki, but most of the software will work on the kaiser too. try looking at the wikis of other devices, and also looking in the software subforum, you will get a good idea of wat ppl use on their kaisers
thanks that is very helpful. This is pretty much what I am looking to start/add to. Let me start working on some stuff and prototype it, also, if I could get some information from some developers, if you do work, and see this post, post me to your stuff, directly with some brief descriptions of it, so I can start looking at it. Thanks all!
this is what I was thinking
Name: HTC Action Screen & HTC Action Screen From Storage Disk
Description: This is a quick access to tasks. Generally placed in the bottom task bar, lets you gain access to things like: New SMS, New Email, New Appointment etc. See Screen Shot.
Language: English
Download Link: Action Screen, Action Screen From SD
Thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=340803
Latest Version: Unknown
Release Date: Unknown
Developer: HTC
Donation Link: N/A
Known Issues/Fixes: How To Fix Wrong Email, MMS & Contact Shortcut
And so on, kind of an easy format to update and fix up
Don't forget to add classifications. I'd even go so far as to think of this as a searchable database or at least a spreadsheet that can managed as a filtered list. You're looking at dozens of apps to keep track of. From an admin standpoint you'll want to track the last date YOU updated the info as well.
I've done similar projects for companies....it's a pain to manage in a text file.
I like the spreadsheet idea, I think I already have to many other websites being worked on to add another DB to the picture I was also thinking about wiki'ing it as well, which probably would not look pretty in a spreadsheet, but who knows.
Its an excellent idea. I agree with you that it is already available but not in the format you plan on doing.
+1 for the idea; ideal for newcomers and/or folks who have been out of touch for a time.
As for those whe are saying that all this is already available in one form or another: very true, but when you have to dig through hundreds upon hundreds of threads then other hundreds of pages within the thread... Yes, searching, but you have to know what to search for. A vague idea of desired functionality helps, but what if you don't even know of something that could potentially be a life-line for you?
you should probley put in screen shots too. Ya know to make it easier on everyone.
This is an awesome idea. What i really hate is when someone posts a thread full of cabs but with no explanatation as to what they actually do. The worst i find is with all the HTC apps. page after page of "HTC camera", "HTC album", "HTC action screen", it isn't exactly easy to tell from the name what a lot of them do.
ok well we will see you when you're done and I'm sure that will be a couple of years.

I definetly think screen shots would be nice. Sometimes form is just as necessary as function and I'd like to see what I'm going to be working with / not working with.
spring cleaning
I say this site needs some spring cleaning since there's no many versions of this and that to the point it takes lots of time digging and finding whats best for everyone

This already exists. It's been linked in the wiki for ages. In the 'Downloads' section, there are links to external freeware pocketpc sites, which include descriptions and multiple screenshots per application.
Y'all just need to browse the wiki more often and when you find something, link it to the wiki, so it *CAN* be easily found in the future for others.
Hope this helps!
I am requesting that the powers that be create a ROM Wiki Page where cooks can enter the vital stats of their roms in a table/spreadsheet format so that innocent rom flashers such as myself can do direct comparisons between roms with out having to wade through hundreds of pages posts etc.
And I also request that chefs use this page and follow the table structure. And that you update your rom on the wiki page when a new version comes out.
Please!
This part may be too ambitious, but I would also like to see on the table a column for user score. Could be a simple 5 star system. Each rom there could have a link to a brief review containing questions about usability, stability, battery life etc.. Graded on a 5 star scale. All the answers would be averaged together and would be reflected on the above mentioned table as a simple score

To me the thing about that is a ROM can run totally different on each device and the Roms are changing every day so i think it would be to hard to keep up with it all and i do not think a chef would like his or her ROM being put next to another ROM so see if the ROM is doing good or bad i know thats what it wont be for but that will happen and it takes me 5 Min's a day to scan through the Roms and see how they are doing i doubt if any chefs would agree to it and it takes all there time to do i new rom so they dont need any extra work in double posting it just my 2pence worh
I hear your concerns. Perhaps just scrap the idea about the rating system.
But if the chef put the basic info for his rom up we could see and compare to determine what roms we may want to use. Like What build they use, whether they used manila 2.1 or 2.5. What programs they add or subtract, what dialer, what page pool setting... etc.. things like these. I am just looking for a good starting point to do my research on which rom I want to use.
There are just too many out there for a person to wade through to find the base set of features they want. I run a small business, and use my phone daily in it. I don't have them time to read about every single rom. I will read about a few though. And it would help to narrow down which ones I look at if I know what features they focus on.
Once the wiki table was set up it would require very little to enter basic data and to keep it loosely updated. As I said, I am just looking for a basic idea of the direction each chef takes their rom.
Seriously? Nobody else thinks this is a good idea? Everyone likes searching through dozens of topics, and wading through Hundreds of pages of replies to find basic data about a rom, and some user feedback? And does everyone here prefer to flash every rom under the sun to find the right one for them?
Don't get me wrong, in my spare time I am a gadget/tech lover. I love to tinker... again- if I have the time.
But there really does have to be a better way to narrowing down the list of potential roms one might want to try. I don't mind trying a few.....but not all.
Any body else with me on this? Or do I stand(type) alone?
Thanks
Yep I support this as well (That said it's fun to go through all these pages ehehe)
I totally agree with you. I am very surprised that this does not exist yet. Our great cookers are putting a lot of efforts into their ROM, but it's no use if we cannot find those.
The point would not be to rate the ROMs because everybody is not looking for the same kind of software. Brief informations like the WM build, the Sense version (if installed), the language and a small description field would be very nice already.
Thanks Alcibiade!
Later
Its a good idea. But anyone can update WIKI! So why not take the initiative?
ai6908:
I will look into it, didn't know that just anybody could edit/create wiki pages... I don't have a whole lot of time... so it might be a while.
Hopefully if I do this the cooks will participate.
Thanx

you are worried about how much of YOUR TIME that YOU SPEND trying to find the right rom have you ever thought about how much time we chefs spend creating these roms? i can promise that flashing a few roms and reading through some threads is nothing in comparison to cooking a good rom. im speaking for myself here, but i think its pretty sad that you ask us to do MORE than we already do....its not like this is our job and we are on your payroll. make a wiki page if you want, but i will never participate.
and end of discussion...lol
Can anyone point me to a good source on where to find general layout id's. I have put together a great theme with Gimp but since I changed things like navbar and clock widget all the button, divider, and other misc. Don't line up or in wrong area all together.
Need serious help only plz. I only say this because as a whole most people here are awesome with advice. But for the ones that want to just suggest search Google and things like that, don't I have spent hundreds of hours getting this far.
I would like to get this completed asap, so spending time searching though literally 100's of threads would cause me to just give up and I'm so close to getn it so thanks in advance

There doesn't seem to be a tips/tricks/hacks sharing thread here. I searched but there was only a dead one, so I'm gonna go ahead and start one up anyways. If mod doesn't approve, then by all means get rid of this thread.
Do you have any tips/tricks/hacks you'd like to share with the community? I have none yet as I have not used this phone long enough to come across any useful ones.
If anyone has any CM7-twekas such as settings wise, I'd happily take them.
Hey iv started messing arround with watchstyler. So far im enjoying makiing my own watch faces, The one thing i was wondering is if there is anyway to add new styles for the digital or analog. As in adding more hands then the stock one the app comes with. We can add wallpapers but nothing else that iv been able to see. Another thing is you cant change the size of the stock digital clock choices you can place em anywhere on the screen but you can shrink them. Would have been a useful options a few times so far.
Read the forums.. For cryin out loud man....
Search!!
Edit: Sorry for reacting like this but it gets really annoying people do not search just starting threads. Making this forum cluttered like crazy....
Sent from my SM-N9005 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
lol there a massive thread with loads of faces
Press thx if i help you
Ok there seems to be some confusion about what im asking. Im not talking about wallpapers. Im talking about adding different needles for the analog clocks, different fonts with adjustable size for the digital clocks, more battery styles other then the stock ones that come with watchstyler. You can add wallpapers but none of the other stuff other then the custom ones that come with watchstyler. And i did do a search on this subject but only found posts about already made watch facias byt that i mean needles/times ,battery status. The reason im asking for this is because i recently tried using a wallpaper that i had to ditch because none of the custom needles or digital numbers that come preloaded in watchstyle could fit anywhere on the wallpaper without looking like they were just in the wrong spot i would have needed something a bit smaller or an options to at least adjust the size of the preloaded ones would have been nice. Again no posts on any of these subject was to be found. I'm kinda wondering how come no one has come accross this problem before. So it would be nice to be able to add more needles, more digital clock fonts, just more options to make even more facias then just the preloaded settings with infinite wallpaper possiblities.
Edit: Ok after looking at quite a few threads i did find mentions on how to add needles and whatnot. Having to use photoshop to mod existing needles opr create new ones altogether. Not exactly everyone is a graphic expert but its a start and the post was not about my problem so unless i searched for specific terms like watchstyler and photoshop i rly would not have found anything witch was the case for me. I stumbled on the info i needed. In the future instead of assuming that everyone who post didnt search realise that we dont all share a single hive mind and sometimes if you dont search a specific word combination you just dont get the results your looking for. Like in this case it didnt occure to me to search for photoshop in conjunction with watchstyler. So my searches didnt yield any results. Anyways if anyone knows of any other sources to get custom needles and whatnot plz let me know im not a graphic inclined person. Thx

I understand where you are coming from on the Search. Hard to find sometimes and I haven't been on forums in anything for years. I have started to read the first 3 to 4 pages of similar posts first before asking something that might have been answered, but even then it sometimes has. Have fun piecing new watch faces together. I downloaded some of the ones from others, but went back to stock to put my kids or father's pic as the wallpaper background, since it is the Holidays, and I get all sappy : )
