Anyone else have this clicking? - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

I have a new Tilt and this weekend I have been messing around with various touch programs. I noticed a clicking sound on the back of my device when I hold it a certain way.
To recreate the issue, turn your phone over and press your finger onto the back right above the speaker and on the same horizontal line with the GPS stud. On my phone it presses in very slightly and makes a clicking sound. All other areas of the phone back seem solid.
Does anyone else with a Tilt/TyTnII have this? Is it a design flaw or is it just my phone?
thanks.

k im kinda confused at what ur doing. I'll try to help but be more specific. Is the screen opened or closed? What program are you running? I know if i have the speakers all the way up and my fingers are on back of the device i get a scratchy noises but i wouldn't call it clicking.

hmm i tried to follow and i dont seem to be having that problem.

Yea, mine does it too. Actually, I have 2 tilts. The older one does it, but the newer one does not do it. It's so minor that some people might not even be able to reproduce it, since it is so minor. Very trivial if you ask me.

Yeah it doesn't appear to be a huge deal, I was just curious... it is almost like the battery cover isn't on properly...but it is.
redbandana...I am not talking about a program clicking, i am talking about the back case....with the tilt closed, push in on the back battery cover just above the speakerphone... it seems to push in ever so lightly and make a little clicking sound.

My Tilt case does not make any clicking noises like you report. Probably a "fit and finish" issue. If the battery cover is on properly, it's not something I'd tend to worry about.

Correct. It wasn't even worth a new thread, in my opinion. Sorry.

Kaiser Front Keypad loose/wobbly -- anyone else?

Hey guys
Just recently got a Tytn II on the UK Orange network. I love it so far but there are a couple of hardware flaws I have noticed and are quite annoying.
1) The front keypad with the call send/end buttons is very loose and wobbles from side to side, as if the hole that it is in is too big for the keys.
2) The space bar on the qwerty keyboard doesnt seem to work all the time, and i will find myself when typing texts/emails with text which looks like "This is at est sentencef or my complaint" if you can see where im pointing. This one is even more so annoying because i have to be careful when typing fast. At first i thought it was something to do with PalmSMS in duttys new ROM but i uninstalled that and the same is happening. I didnt notice it when i first got my kaiser but only after the first 2 weeks have i noticed it.
Hope someone can relate to these problems.
Thanks
-mcall_r
im having the same problem. I've had two different Tilts and the buttons are both very wobbly. Not really a big issue to me though.

yup, same here. not an "issue" for me though, as it doesn't affect anything. My spacebar works fine, I'm a text maniac so if it wasn't working I'd notice...
If your spacebar is still malfunctioning after flashing a different rom, I'd be concerned. My keypad is much more responsive using a well cooked rom.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure there have been a couple of threads about the general build quality of the Kaiser.
The silver call/send keys on the bottom are really nothing to get too worked up over though.

Yeah the front keypad doesnt really bother me that much it was just to see if it was common on alot of devices. I actually work in an orange shop and have sold alot of kaisers where the front buttons were fine.
As with the ROM thing, i never thought of that but coming to think of it now i noticed it when i started using duttys latest rom with PALMSMS built in. I tried the non-palmsms version and the same thing occurs. I like that version because anything earlier, xT9 interferes with the hardware keyboard.
What is the exact version of the dutty ROM you are using?
Thanks
Same here wobbly keys bother me at first now I kinda like to wiggle it around when i am bored
I noticed that, too. No big deal, really
I too have the wobbly front keypad. I think its the same for all Kaisers. Nothing to worry about IMO. It works just fine and doesn't look like it'll be breaking anytime soon.
Regarding the spacebar, it actually is 2 keys rolled into one. So if you press in the middle of it, nothing will happen. Try pressing on either the right or the left side and you should have no problem. Takes an hour to get used to it

LOL you might want to reword that
and Pheonix, i know that i had always been typing properly before and it was fine, it was just the ROM i was using. I reloaded it and its fine, no problems!!!!
Cheers for all your input guys
WOW .. i didnt expected soo many guys with the same wobbly issue... i was really annoyed by it .... Especially when i am playing any Game which requires fast repsonse.... i once tried to put a piece of small paper under the Buttons .. so it would fix it in place... but after that buttons didnt work properly... but after 6 months of usage .. i now hardly notice the Wobbly Front Pad...
I'm on my 2nd kaiser (both tilt variants) and they both had the d-pad slides on both of them. I noticed its more on the left side, where the answer button is, it'll move up and down.
Also if what you type comes out slow on a rom, try the disable xt9 cab floating around, i know that was the fix for some of the roms.
Kinda sucks when what your typing comes out messed up and you send it without reading it and then people think your drunk... not good for business!
front keypad, ironically, just started to wiggle around yesterday. I've had it about a month (Kaiser-TytnII Pro). No issues with the inside keyboard(yet) though
hmmmm seems to be a flaw in all kaisers.
i dont think the t-mobile MDA version would be like that though.. the keypad is different on theirs.
Unfortunately when mine wobbles up too far in either the up or down direction the d-pad intermittently does not function properly... that is, if I press up or down it does not work a percentage of the time. Anyone know if there is a fix (I'm assuming hardware fix) for this issue? Otherwise the device is fine and I'd prefer not too have to send it back.
maybe this issue is the reason why T-Mobile has a different front-keypad on the MDA Vario 3. Mine fits like a glove.

Yes, but the T-Mobile one is fugly and I want to get rid of it. I've bought the original one but the change is a little bit slippery.

Just out of curiousity..

I have had about 7 different AT&T Tilts in my life and if my memory serves me right, I only remember 2 of them not having the issue I am about to entail.
When I slide my keyboard out, it seems that the ribbon cable or something under the metal hinge pushes against the back of the screen and you can actually see the screen colors fray and fade as if it would do it you were to push down too hard on it with your finger.
I am just wondering if anyone else has notice this. Wonder if it is a common occurrence. I would like to know what causes this.
No such thing on the 2 I've had. Never read of it on here either.
7 Tilt's? That was a typo, right?
No issues for me at all. No resistance or screen changes when activating the keyboard.
hmmm, odd. yeah 7 man haha
i have the worst of luck with phones. the one i thought was "THE ONE" i would keep till it was time to get a new phone was hit out of my hand and the hinge came loose so I had to replace that. That one did not have the problem i stated earlier. my replacement had that screen/hinge issue so i told em to send me another one by bullshitting that it will crack my screen...the one they sent me to replace that had the 7201 chip in it and 0 hours of talk time so it was brand freaking new...but it also had the screen issue...weird, huh? i wonder if it is anything to worry about?
The momentary color shifting occurs when you are applying too much pressure to the wrong area when sliding the phone open. I don't see this is normal use since I baby my Tilt, but I am able to reproduce it when I purposely try to.

yeah, i am aware. it happens regardless what i do. trying to figure out what is causing it so i can find a fix
Speaking from my job experience of ripping apart laptop LCD's, it's probably the ribbon cable; as mentioned previously...

Shuts off when keyboard is slammed shut...

This is really bugging me but on occasion, when I slam the keyboard shut, the phone turns off. It also has happened when I opened the keyboard but only a few times.
I actually dissassembled the phone to see if maybe it was a loose connection somewhere. I did find that the keyboard ribbon cable was loosely connected so I reseated it firmly...but the problem didn't go away.
I also thought it may be either the SIMM card or the memory card contacts but after removing them, again, I still can reproduce the problem.
Understand that this is an intermittent problem and a little unpredictable but I can make it happen within a few tries. If I cautiously open and close the keyboard (without slamming it shut), I have no problems.
I don't believe it's software related because I can force it to happen when the device is booting up (with the Ericsson logo on the screen) before the OS loads.
Anyone else experiencing this?????
11/17/08 UPDATE: PROBLEM RESOLVED!
After further review and testing, it appears that the battery was losing connection to the battery contacts. I shoved a small crumb of paper folded up (about 1mm thick) at the back of the batt and the problem has gone away. Of course, I'm still holding my breath every time I open and close the keyboard but it looks like that may have been the problem. That's strange because I'm using the original battery. Thought this may help in case anyone else ever runs into this.
That sounds like a problem with the internals, maybe a you should get it replaced/repaired?
Kid says to doctor " IT hurts when I twist my arm backward like this." Doctor replies "then don't do that"
You say "my phone shuts off when I slam my keyboard shut" Doctor says "don't slam your keyboard shut"
this thought just made me laugh.
Seriously though. It does sound like an internal hardware issue that you should have fixed otherwise it may just get worse and start happening more regularly and at very inconvenient times.
Good luck.
Reminds me of my samsung slider phone the day that it died. I was sliding it back and forth.. sometimes the screen would go completely white and then come back.
By the end of the day, it went white and stayed that way.
Turns out the cable on the inside was slowly being cut from rubbing against the metal hole it was going thru every time the slider moved.
You've checked the cables before... but maybe its not cut yet, but something on the slider mechanism is hitting a wire/pulling on it.
Nobody knows.
But we all do know thats not normal. So yea get it replaced.
LOL!

Yep...It's going back. Might as well get a fresh one. I know this problem existed for other phones before and the fix was mostly something simple that didn't require a replacement.
im getting exactly the same problem. gonna send mine back as well.
i have the exact same problem too! Waiting for a new one...
i thought i was the only one with this problem, but it looks like a production error as there are already 3 people on this board who have this defect.

Thats a pretty stupid mistake by SE...
They should do a quick fix by making new batters a smidge thicker. Of course they probably wouldn't offer free replacements, but they should fix it anyway.

Where did you place the paper exactly ? On the back of the battery where all the info text is or on the bottom ?
When my device is cold, eg in the morning for first use, this sometimes doesnt happen for >20x tries...but when i used it for a longer time and it almost always shuts down when slammed shut..but i already thought it might be something with the battery, but sometimes while slamming it shut for numerous times even the battery cover would come up and it didnt shut down...then in another situation it shuts down immediatly
Poor design...

Yea...what I found with the design is that the ribbon cable connecting the keyboard sits right under the battery. In fact you can see the protrusion when you remove the battery under the white label. It moves when the keyboard is opened and closed. Slightly...but it does move.
...anyway...I folded a small piece of paper to wrap around the back edge of the battery.
Try this:
1. Make a small rectangular strip of paper about 10mm x 20mm and fold it the long way so you end up with a 5mm x 20mm piece.
2. Wrap it around the back/bottom edge of the battery as you reinsert it.
(If the battery fits more snug in its compartment, you got it right!)
3. Put the back cover back on--which should also be more snug.
4. Turn on the device and try it out (slam the keyboard).
(You don't have to wait for it to completely boot up...you can test it when the SE logo appears).
Be careful to use regular copy paper and not paper that's too thick as it may cause some other damage/problems with the device.
could you make a picture of that ?
Actually i will recieve a new device tomorrow, but i still have the feeling that this problem might reoccur as it seems to be a design flaw

I had the same problem too.. but it was linked with the flex cable. Now i just don't use my keyboard even after fixing it.

Screen-> Fade to White-> Temporarily

From what I've been able to find from searching, I think my Tilt is about to bite the dust, but thougth I'd post the symptoms and see if anyone has any good info.
My screen has been occasionally fading to white. Not sure how else to describe it. It just sort of starts getting white, and within 2-3 seconds will be completely white. It is still working, that is, I can place a call (using MS Voice Command); I can play music.
I have SPB Mobile Shell on it, and a button assigned to go to the home screen. I can press that, and it will go to the home screen and display normally. If it is a hardware problem, I find it interesting that I can go back to the main screen. I suspect it is close to gone.
Any thoughts?
If so, anyone know what it costs to repair, and where to do that?
Sounds like a software thing to me, I hate to say it but try a hard reset. Do you have a 6.5 rom?
I've been thinking of doing a hard reset anyway, My memory is about used up. I'm not quite sure why. Probably should get it cleaned up.
No, I'm not on 6.5. I've been reluctant to make the move. I did some rom updates some time ago, and then the person working it decided to stop. I decided to stay with MFGR based roms after that.

Good thinking.
Likely NOT software but hardware -- could be the screen is going bad, or perhaps just the ribbon cable than connects the screen is broken or not seated properly.

Try putting the phone in the bootloader screen and let it sit there, that should let it go around the software.
Erm, yeah -- I guess that wouldn't be indicative of a hardware problem
Well, I am doing the hard reset. So far, no white.
Hmmm...lordy...I have a lot of stuff I try to put on this phone.
I wonder how much memory, both types, I need to keep available.
Don't put anything on the phone that you REALLY REALLY don't need. This is a taste phase and you need the least amount of BS on there.
Well, I've got most of what I need loaded, and have 61MB storage, and 63MB of Program memory free. Much better than before.
But I am still getting the fade to white occasionally.
I'm thinking hardware.
Anyone know if checking the 'ribbon' cable is user capable thing? I don't see it easily. I'll so some searching in the meantime.
Also, any feedback on cost and where for a new screen? Or do I just trash it when it finally goes?
[EDIT]
I am noticing that it particularly does it when I click the Windows (lower left) hard button on the front. I'm thinking it is related to a problem with that button.
Could be when you press that button you are flexing the cable enough to make it lose connection and go white -- this could be good news -- there are instructions scattered in this forum on how to take the phone apart. I'd recommend doing that and makeing sure the cable is firmly seated -- you should also inspect it for cracks.
Hopefully it's just a loose cable and making sure its in all the way will fix it -- if not you'll have to track down a new one.
Thanks. I'll do some searching for those instructions.
In the meantime, I called HTC just to get their thoughts on repair. First thing they told me was to upgrade the rom to the latest which is 3.57.502.2 .
I haven't been following ROM discussions. I need to check that out too. I wish I had seen or thought of that before I just spent a day with the hard reset/reinstall
did this get resolved?
I have the same issue. was it the ribbon cable?
update. I loaded a stock rom, and this appears to have solved the fade to white
Sorry...beeen away a bit.
I have not resolved the issue. It is intermittent, and hasn't happened for a few days now.
I searched and have found some instructions about taking the screen apart, but have not tackled that yet.
In my case I can't imagine changing roms making any difference, as I've had this rom for many months and it is just recently starting this.
I have found new LCD screens for this for ~ $30. I'm wondering if replacing the screen may be an ultimate solution or, if it is possible/likely that it is somethign else hardware related.
Been busy, and don't have the tools yet, so it may be a bit (or when it goes permanenly white forcing action) before I get any further on this.
It is definitely a hardware issue, my wife's tilt did the same thing, then it went permanent white. I first took it all apart looking for a bad ribbon cable or connection because it had taken a few good falls. But that was not it. So I bought a screen for about 30.00 online and shazam that was it!
Thanks for that info. I was thinking of ordering the screen, but concerned it could be something other than the screen (even though logically it would make sense that it is the screen.)

Creaky back and other things?

Hello!
I've heard that HTC's have very good build quality, and I've had my IS for just over a week now, and I've noticed 'creaks'. At first I thought it was the screen, but I've now realised it's the back cover that creaks sometimes. If I were to replace the back/get a protective case such as a 'Barely There Casemate' would that stop the creaking? I tried to post a link but am too new to.
Also, I noticed this when I first bought my phone and put the battery in, the battery fits in, but has a bit of a 'bounce' to it. If that makes sense. I thought it wasn't fitting in properly, but it does, just not RIGHT against the phone... if that makes any sense. Dunno if that would contribute to the creaky back, or whether that's normal.
Also, how can I get my LED to stay on longer when I get a text message? It's a handy feature, but it seems to stop flashing after about 20mins, which is a bit of a pain if I don't look at my phone for longer than that.
... and last but not least, Angry Birds. Whenever I open any of the games, they freeze at the home screen. I then have to hit home and reopen them, get to the next menu it freezes, I hit home and do the same routine till it eventually starts working. What's the deal? I thought about maybe reinstalling them, but surely each of the games wouldn't have installed incorrectly?
THANKS ALL.

I put a BodyGlove 2 piece case on my IncS and I do not notice the back sweaking anymore.
Oh, so the squeaky back is a common thing then?
Not for mine, I wonder if the problem is because one hasn't snapped the back on correctly.
It's definitely on properly. I've gone over the back a few times just to make sure it's clipped into place, so I dunno why it should do it.
Mine makes a noise at the bottom left corner of my case, got to admit its rather annoying. But i guess the majority of phones will unless its 100% flush with each other. Even when i put my otter case on it sometimes makes a noise.
The back on my phone is sometimes creaky as well. Since it's a malleable plastic, I'm guessing the weather/putting back on a certain way affects how squeaky or not it gets.
Ahh, okay, that settles it with the back then. Will just get a case. I need one any to give it a bit of protection, but it will hopefully stop the creaking. Am guessing the battery isn't a problem either if it's working in the phone... just me being a bit pedantic.
Anybody know if I'm able to make the LED stay on longer after receiving a text/notification?
OH! I've worked out what's going on with Angry Birds. Am presuming/hoping this is just an app problem. Basically, if I load the game and put the phone into landscape mode, the game won't work. I have to either hit home, or, spin the phone round into portrait mode, and then I can use the game. I then spin it back, choose the next menu and then put it back into landscape mode and then back again to get to the next setting/menu. It's a bit of a pain! Anyone know what's going on with that?
Thanks for all the replies so far.
Sorry for the bump. Anyone go any ideas for the game freeze and LED?
