we are at the min at 16 GB sdhc from this point on there is only 6 steps untill 1024GB 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512 and then 1024.
but as this seem all a bit to logical to realy pan out in my opinion. much as id love to see a 1 TB card and sometime "soon"(i can wait for 2 or 3 years). realy my problem with it is once it become that small surely even slight E.M. fileds would have a very unwanted effect.
also in these 6 steps dose anyone think sdhc will be replaced by a diffrent format.
will there be more than 6 moves to get us to this goal.
am i speaking from my back side.
feel free to add your thoughts on the matter hear.
with the say flash cards evolve prob
but may not be in the sdmicro format
in the future 1TB would be like 1GB two years ago but by then sd cards would be a thing of the past. We will have HD videos on are phones and music will be in wav instead of mp3......
as previously stated, it is only a question of memory density, but by the time such density comes around the preferred medium of storage will no longer be sd memory
I guesse you guys are all right about the format changing. Now about the capacity... I recall buying an SHDC of 8GB like a year ago (arround March 07). 16Gb's hit the market arround December, later that year. So if it takes to double capacities, say 9 month, then we'd have 1TB (9 x 6) = 54 month, that's like by 2012-ish... woow! :-D can't wait!!
its probably more likely that either wimax, or 4g will be in place by then, so instead of having onboard storage, you will stream remotely?
then youve got unlimited storage
well in 2-3 years we gonna have Holographic Memory pretty much in anything... think about... for example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holographic_Versatile_Card
its size of credit card... 30 GB... you put 5 Credit Cards on top of eachother... and I dont know if you heard of creditcard size cell phone... now... add to it... wireless development... including, wireless power supply.. and wireless data storage... so what you have at the end is a few cards in your pocket... some for data others are devices...
It surprises me, till this day, the memory capacity of sd cards. I have a friend who showing my his external hard drive for his computer (500GB), in the palm of his hand. I was amazed. As time passes with this sd memory cards, I also see electronic devices cellphones, digital cameras, mps, multi-media players, etc. being upgraded as well to be able to read such high capacity memory cards. The word on the street is that there will be a 24GB card by December, a 32GB card by the first have of 2009. Hopefully by 2010, HTC will put out a TyTN 3, 4, or 5 (with drivers) which will be able to read 64/128 GB sd cards, lol.
someone has to explain to me the benefit a 1 Terabyte Card in your Phone would bring along... i'm having a hard time in filling my 2 Gigabyte SD Card with enough stuff to fill it up (although i have enough Music & Videos)

as much as id realy like to beleave it (this time) they have been saying things like this sice 56k came out. ok so it may have been a little less ambishious, but every time something new come's out every one's like this is going to be IT the thing evey one will have. so so may let downs.
but this is mostly because the more we get, the more we need. programes arnt wrighten to be small and to do there job, there wrighten and rewrighten to add things no one need/wants.

Just think now you can at last install vista and office 2007 on a SD card. Wounder if you would even notice that its slow.
indeed.
so would anyone like to place bets on how long untill we see a 1TB solid state card simular to a sd card?
2 years?
3 years?
2012?
1TB sd card" is it posable
Well I'm not totally sure but at the present time I'm trying to format a mini SD card, that my computer is seeing as a 1.30tb card. Any ideas as to why? It says it's a 8GB on the label but it wouldn't do anything in any of my machines and my comp kept wanting me to format it. It wouldn't let me do it in the quick format either, had to be the full. So far it's taken over twelve hrs. and is about 1/3 of the way done. Any suggestions would be welcome.
I don't think that SD-cards know how to pose... I mean, It's either in a slot, or in a box... no limbs or freedom of movement...
I wouldn't rate it highly that SD-cards can do the 1TB pose, whatever that is.
Well the largest flash memory I've seen is a solid state drive made by ocz that is 960gb and that costs roughly $3300 in united states dollars. From what I understand, a ssd and SD card are almost the same. Maybe I'm wrong but they're both flash memory.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Damn, so a noob finds a topic from 2008, which has nothing to do with his question, but it's amazing how 2-3 years ago we thought about holographic memory, but now 2-3 years later the largest flash memory we have (not counting SSD, they are bigger and have more memory modules) is a 128GB CompactFlash card.
And to the noob asking the question, you bought a fake card on ebay.

Hi guys, I am trying to buy a "SanDisk Mobile Premier 2GB Micro SD high speed", I believe it is fit for Kaiser, right?
Yep that'll work fine; be wary of buying on eBay as many tend to be fakes. Buy from a trusted reseller. I have got a 6GB for less than £40 delivered.
If your in the US, you can get great deals @ newegg.com
I purchased my 2gb microsd for 19.99, and 3 day ups is standard shipping.(costs like 3-5 dollars, on some cases its free shipping)
it supports cards over 2GB (Micro SDHC); i have a 2GB Micro SD for now, waiting for a 10-15GB model of the SDHC's to come out so i can dump all my music on it and ditch my iPod
dunno where ive got this from but i think/heard/got the vibe that the kaiser can only support up to 8gb sdhc?
that's great, I was think about a 2GB one but seems like it is not enough? Does Kaiser a good music/video player?

i get maybe 45 minutes out of a charge on the iPod anymore; it will permanently reside in my car soon enough. Dont get me wrong, the iPod is great and all, but pocket space is at a premium for me, and between wallet, cell/PPC, keys, iPod, ciggs, lighter, and PassCards my pockets are stuffed. If 8GB is the most the Kaiser will support, then so be it.

By the way here comes a new question, I found that all micro SDHC are come with CLASS 2, that means 9mb/s on reading and 5mb/s on writing... a little bit slow? It that necessay to buy a MicroSD Ultra II ?

if you have a 1-2GB micro SD card now, i'd wait a while unless your dying for memory space; they are bound to up the read/write speeds and lower the prices. I teach digital photography, a few years back read/write speeds of memory cards mattered a LOT, nowadays most D-SLR's have a huge cache so a superfast memory card isnt such a big deal, and the prices are fairly decent. My bet is in 6 months an 8 gig Ultra II Micro SDHC shouldnt be more than $60.
thats great to hear RacerX10; even 10-15GB should effectively mean i dont need to drag my laptop and iPod everywhere; 32GB means pretty much ALL my media with me.
SDHC spec is up to 32gig, today the max you can actually buy is 6gig. By the time you can actually buy a 32gig, we'll be using different phones like TyTN III

6GB Micro SDHCs are available - Sandisk seems to be th eonly real supplier at this moment. I'm sure others will have theirs out soon too. I just bought one from www.mydigitaldiscount.com in the US. Got it with no issues, and I've filled 4.5GB of it with music and video.
8GB MicroSDHCs are targeted for release probably around the end of the year. Again, Sandisk will be the first supplier.
No one has even announced an official "coming soon" statement for anything bigger than 8GB yet.

Kaiser is a real good video player(Using TCPMP), but it also depends on the format.
My favorite, and In my opinion, the best format is .m4v (You may need a special convertor for that)
Other formats are either 2 big, or has really choppy playback.
Also you should increase your font and glyph cache to 32768 (makes things more responsive/ smoother)
the SDA SD Card Association has never quite said the 'maximum' size of a Micro SD; there is a theoretical maximum of 32 GB, hence the 'limit' at the moment, which IMO means merely a new 'type' of SD card in a year or two. as for hardware that reads them, there likely is a maximum size they can read.
Currently Samsung has an 8GB Micro SD in development, Kingston and Sandisk are sure to be right behind anyways. besides, its just a memory card; i have piles of 128MB Memory Stick Pro Duo's that i bought for my Sony S710a when it first came out, and 128MB was still a fairly sizeable card for a cell phone; now we're talking 6-8+ gigs...

That's great advise, I used to play .AVI with TCPMP and it works fine but haven't try to increase the cache, due to my Vario I is limited by its memory
This is sorely tempting - never have to use the MD again and still have plenty of spare space!!

No, I don't think it would work. Our device is only capable of accepting either the MicroSDHC (with an adaptor) or MiniSDHC.
SDHC's physical dimension is too large to be slotted into our device.
you can get a convertor from sd to micro sd its being on these forums before but this is a good price for anyone looking at the shift to improve batterylife and increase storage for that as it uses sd as far as i remember

converter from sd to micro or mini.. google search just comes up with mini to sd adapter, ie wrong way round. im getting an athena, and i dont need the space, but would be cool to have the possibilty of paying 60 quid for 16 gb of storage.
and to think, 2 years ago, november 2005, i got a 2gb ms pro duo for my psp and k750 for 80 quid in singapore, when 1gb were 100 quid.. now look lol
should work if it comes in our size miniSD or microsd w/adapter.kaiser is rated up 32gb and i think the athena is the same.

I did find one once from a no-name mfr in China or Taiwan. It was basically a Mini-SD card with a flat ribbon cable coming out of it into a PCB that had an SD adapter on. I assume it would work, but looks like it would break apart within 5 mins. And added to the fact that you would have to leave the flap open on the athena compartment.
Not quite 16GB yet, but the 12 GB microSDHC is already out. See this thread:

My understnading is that 32 gb is the limit of the current os. Once we upgrade to wm7 this will no longer be applicable.
32gb is the official purported maximum capacity of the sdhc standard, though this 'wall' may be lifted in future (2terabytes if you believe wikipedia). It is certainly not os specific.
I think 32 gigabytes of data storage should be overkill for most people anyway. It seems many people have ample media and software on their microdrive and still have 50 percent left, though if my ssd vs sdhc poll is to be believed some people would like 64gb of storage on their Athenas: whilst this is all good for showing off, in real terms such a large amount of storage would be fairly pointless to the average joe. Only video files could realistically swamp such a chasmic void of memory and who really wants to keep films they've already watched on their hard drive (unless of course it's a particularly good film)?
This principly applies to any phone, pda or multimedia device. One use for which i do propose to use a 32gb sdhc is in my eee pc. Provided the write speed of a class 6 card is fast enough i will use one to install xp and give me the extra space for program files and dowmoads that i crave

32GB is the maximum native partition size for window ce 5.0.
32GB is actually not difficult to fill once you start collecting musics, pictures and videos in a serious way. How big is iPod's biggest storage? Larger than 32GB I think. If I have that much space, I would convert all my old CD's and put all my CD in storage for good (may be will bury it for 200 years and have it sold as antique for a fortune then ).
Pictures is another story. It can only grow. I seldom want to delete them ever. My children's photo, no matter how old, must be kept for ever.
Another thing that I must mentioned is the video capture requirement. If you use your video camera, you will notice how quickly the disk storage get used up.
I won't be complaining about having too much disk space for this reason.
I still remember those early days when all we had on our IBM PC was a floppy and could'nt fantom why anyone could use a 10MB harddisk that cost $15,000. When my boss acquired a 100MB notebook, we all said he was insane because nobody should ever need so much space. Then, he went 1 GB! That was unthinkable. I'm seeing the same thing here. When the space is available, we will somehow find use for it, may be slowly, but surely.
May be 5 years later, we can look at this post again, and see if this is true
I agree space, however big can slowly be filled up for being social beings, one way or the other, we will be sentimental on things which we hold dear to us regardless how junk it may be for some other people.
What we are actually seeing here is the old evolution of storage space coming to life all over again. Different it may seem right now because of the difference in medium and usage but I agree with Eaglesteve. It may sound insane now but five years from now, it may look funny not just to us but to those that will replace us that we even talk about these things.
The beauty about having billions of people in this world is that in terms of economies of scale, it is faster to develop technology for everyone to use. Even if a small percentage will adopt a certain size of storage, it is already enough to make it economical for every one to use.
Even if there is a limitation in the OS that we are using right now, who's to say that it will not change in the future. It used to take MS 5 years to develop a new version of the Win CE OS. We have seen how fast Win CE evolved and we already have 1 whole version upgrade every 2 years or so. Every 6 months MS announces an aku upgrade on certain new devices. For me this is very good news, for the average joe this is nothing because he doesn't really care. His only concern is being able to use what he has. Actually the average joe is afraid of change. He wants his life to be better but is afraid of the sacrifices needed to make it better.
We, along with the minority are at the forefront of technological evolution. We are the early adoptors because we have the foresight to see the possibilities technology has in store for all of us. If we stop and become complacent, we will become the average joe and eventually get buried in the mass of zobies or sheep that the average joe really is.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion however crazy or educated they may be. However, an opinion may be shared by not just one or two but also by millions or maybe billions. It maybe that the average joe for now may crave for 8G storage whatever the medium. It may also be that people like leoni may think Asus eee may be a good replacement for the athena. But let us not forget, there are many more not voicing their opinions on this or any topic in and outside the forum.
The vocal ones maybe the catalyst for now but it is the masses or those affected by the mass marketing campaigns of businesses that will ultimately decide the future. Let us not forget though that for there to be a future for every one, we, the visionaries and early adoptors must constantly look choose for the best out there for us and influence others to our thinking. In doing so, we ensure that there will be a future for what we believe in. This is the essence of a forum. This is the reason we are here but then again, this is just my opinion.

I'm looking for a 1tb card, I've got about £3 is that okay?
someone get me one! Bah HTC will have to fix this... etc etc
I have a 16GB Class 6 and find it helps keep every interaction on the HD2 snappy. I install all of my programs on the card and play large movie files (600mb-1.8GB).
Swapping between all these programs and movies and phone calls etc really flies. I originally tried a 2GB class 2 and a 4GB class 4 and found they were ok but not as responsive when you had lots going on.
So my choice was 8GB,16GB or 32GB class 6. The price hike between 16GB to 32GB was significant and the steps between the loweer capacities were quite close so I went for the highest capacity card I could afford.
If you look around you can get them at "reasonable" prices.
The added advantage of a class 6 is when I plug the card into my PC I can transfer large (movie) files quite quickly and the speed difference is more noticeable when doing this on lower class cards.

you will be lucky to get a 32gb for around 50 to 60. i have 10 sandisk 32gb microsd for £65 each on order from HK and genuine. These retail for 80 - 90 in the uk. Not sure how much the trade is in the uk (unless i check supplier details) but the profit margin on memory cards is extremely small.
For the money your willing to spend you are better of doing what someone else suggested and that is using several 16gb cards.

set aside the childish remarks from members the same question could be asked about your hard disk in your machine, why do you have a hard disk larger than a few GB, why bother going 500GB, 1TB+ etc. The same answer applies to having a larger memory card, but for example TomTom maps of europe and america can be larger than 10GB alone, music collection can be large and some people like to use their phone as mobile storage instead of hotswapping usb pens.
I have filled up my 16gb memory cards with just that music (because i like to use my phone as a mp3 player) and the next step from 16 is 32.
DR_ASHK: The higher the class the faster the write speed but this also can be limited by the hardware / software.

Everything I've read states the higher capacity cards don't do well running ROMs. Like you I'm new to the nook so I"m sure someone else with more experience will chime in.
I have a 32 gig card installed right now. Works just fine as a data card.
If you want to run custom ROMS off the card, make sure its a sandisk. That flapping sound about larger sized card being bad for Roms is a buncha crap in my opinion (and I have the benchmarks on this card to prove it), but the BRAND of card makes a huge difference when running Roms. Avoid transcend and PNY like the plague.
That said, if you just want the card for data, then yes, the NC can handle them just fine.

What size Sandisk card do you recommend for running custom ROMs? I've read 8 but I really would like to run a 16.
With a sandisk, I can't see any reason why a 16 or even 32 gig card would give you trouble on roms.
Using the card to run your "operating system" seems to require a higher small-block read/write speed than most cards have. Two things seem to affect it: 1) brand (sandisk is currently the only way to go), and 2)it seems that higher classed cards sacrifice the small block performance a bit. This makes sense to me, since the classification related to large block sequential read/writes (iirc), so some trade-iffs are always expected.
See this thread for useful things.
And I think most people are buying the smaller card mostly because of price, and partly due to a herd mentality on threads like the above.
Sandisk 16gb is just fine for running the Rom off the sd card; that is my current setup.

Funny how all the Transcend cards in all 3 Nooks in my house are brilliant. I've used Transcend for years and have never had a problem, be it in my cameras to my phones.

I was referring to the specific instance of using transcend for running cm7 for example. I understand transcend and patriot are decent when used for data, and I have PNY cards in our cameras, so they seem to work fine for data.
I have a wintec SDCH 16g class 4 and it works fine, but I only use it for data.
I've been looking into this, and here's what it boils down to:
Most MicroSD cards are set up for data transfer aimed at large files, such as video or high resolution pictures. The majority of the market these cards are manufactured for are digital camcorders, cameras, and smart phones with cameras.
They've gotten great at streaming media to and from the cards, and using them as storage mediums.
Running an operating system from the card requires a whole lot of small data transfers, which is not a specification that manufacterers pay much attention to. Most people would never notice improvement in this area of the manufacturing process, so the companies don't waste money on it.
Different manufacturers have different ideas of what their product should be capable of.
SanDisk is the brand that has consistently tested better for small data transfer then other card makers.
Running programs/operating systems from a MicroSD card is a new animal, something that hasn't really been done before now, and the tablet market is still in it's infancy.
I'm sure this issue will be addressed by the hardware makers of memory cards over the next year or so, but for now we are stuck with the task of trying to figure out what works for our purpose given what's available on the market right now.
All this being said, out of a handful of cards I own, my 16 gig SanDisk class 2 MicroSD card is my highest performing card - more then twice as fast as even 4 out of 5 of the 8 gig SanDisk cards I have.
Here is the link to the software we are using to test the cards: Crystal Disk Mark
Post 5 in this thread has a link that takes you to the one that has become our communal benchmark thread, and has a lot of info on this topic.
I would surmise that a 32 gig SanDisk brand card would probably be pretty good given that:
-Sandisk 8 gig cards (in class 2 and 4) are the general recommendation
-SanDisk 16 gig cards consistently test to a higher performance level then the 8 gig cards.
If this is the beginning of a pattern, and the larger capacity SanDisk cards are inherently manufactered to a higher small data standard, then theoretically the 32 gig card would be better.
But, this is only a theory. A 32 gig card is more then just a couple of bucks, and I don't think we have enough benchmarks on them yet to say one way or another.
Even with the SanDisk 8 gig cards, there is a wide range of what you could end up with on small data transfer speed. It's kind of pot luck. Even the slowest ones are many orders of magnitude faster then most other manufacturers, though.
This would be a good thread for people who do have 32 gig cards of any brand to chime in on, so we could keep the discussion about the largest supported capacity card on the Nook seperate from the other threads on this topic.
I saw a thread a week or so ago regarding testing class 4 cards and which were better. I just ordered a NC the other day. Anyone know the thread?

You might mean my thread on comparing speed results between different readers using the benchmark software.
It's more a look at the testing software and methods of doing so then the actual cards themselves.
The more people who post benchmark results in the thread skwalas linked to back in post 5, the better of an idea we'll have of what works for us.
The amount of information we've collected so far in such a short time is astonishing - this is a great community.

Sandisk 16gb, Class 4; Got it from Radio Shack a month or so ago on sale for like $25.
32 Gig
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004G7D0IW
Bought this one about a month ago. Transferred my 16G class 2 from Radio Shack to the 32G then expanded the partition. I run CM7 off the SD. Works GREAT!. I run movies, apps from the card with tons of room.
Thanks for all the replies! They been very helpful!

Rocking a 32 Lexar Class 10 here. Just download SD Tools from the market and its running 11 MB/s write and 25 MB/s read.

IIRC, Lexar splits their Class X cards into two more classifications, a regular and an Ultra class. Which one was yours?
Also, Radio Shack currently has 8gb Sandisk C4 cards for sale at 14.99. Perfect for playing with an SD install. With Crystal mark and a cheapie USB reader I got 2.5mb/s read, 1.5 mb/s write (both of the small block ones). I believe these are the important ones for an SD card based ROM?
I suspect the main reason there's not much info out there on 32GB cards is that people are less willing to drop $50-80 on something that may not work (IF they're trying to run a custom ROM from the card). If you're not trying to set up a custom ROM install on the SD, get any card you want--you may appreciate that higher sequential read/write in the higher class cards when you're moving multiple GB of movies or music to and from the card.
From everything I've read, the size of the card makes no difference whatsoever. The only reason people harp on the 8GB and 16GB Sandisk cards is because those specific models (both class 2 and 4 in those sizes) have been tested many times and return both reliably high small-block random writes and positive anecdotal reports for running ROMs. The size, manufacturer and class are irrelevant in and of themselves: they just let us identify specific models identified as most consistently working well.
Also, CrystalDiskMark is not malware: just do a custom install and choose not to install whatever is bundled with it (do this always for all software, I'd say). It's whatever program they use to suggest other software that triggers the false positives in security programs.
Hi,
Just wanted to discuss, as I'm curious about the opinion of people here, especially those (But not limited to) who are getting an Nexus phone which has obviously no SD card slot;
Had an Optimus One from 2011 to 2014 as my first phone and then switched to Galaxy S4. Sometimes I thought maybe I could have gotten a Nexus, or not sure, maybe a Nexus could be my next phone, or even a Sony (I like my S4. But when I got it, I didn't knew about KNOX haha. I'd rather not support Samsung in the long run with their KNOX flag I guess).
The lack of an SD card slot always drove me away from Nexus phones (Except Nexus One, which I did considered long ago), although it's true that Nexus phones look pretty amazing. How did you guys (Not limited to Nexus) chose a Nexus, not fearing that you might end up lacking storage at some point? I used to store Dreamcast ROMs in my SD card, and played around with Dolphin emulator for a while, these are quite huge files, and if you put movies in the phone too haha, space can run out pretty quick.
I have the 16GB variant of the S4 along with a 32GB microSD card (External SD close to full. Might upgrade to 64 eventually) - My 32GB card is close to full, so obviously a 32GB phone with no SD is a big no-no. 64GB would be the bare minimum, considered that storage space would be splitted between the user data (/Data/Media) and the /Data partition itself for app storage, also not forgetting the /System partition, I might even get tight on storage on a 64GB phone. So the wisest choice would be to get a 128GB version which is costly anyway.
I discussed about my point/needs myself, altough I'm especially curious, while I will have to say goodbye to SD cards slot at some point anyway, some people here did chose recent phones with lack of SD support without any fear of lacking storage (Which unfortunately drive me away from Nexus, but might consider a 128GB variant).
How is the lack of an SD card slot not a deal-breaker to you, and worth all the other features, guys?
Thank you for reading.
The tough question. I was hoping to see good answers, but I think some might shy away from it. My wife has the 2013 Moto X, and it doesn't have a memory card. Worse, it's capped at 16GB. She has a couple games, but she's put a bunch of anime episodes on it. And been unable to update apps or take OTAs (she runs everything all stock) due to not having enough size. And that really sucks.
I personally will not use a smartphone without a microSD card slot unless it has 128GB or more. That's my new rule. My HTC One M8 has 32 internal and a 64GB memory card. 64GB alone would not be enough. 96 is fine. 128 would be sweet. I can go up to 128GB in the M8, and have 160GB, and that's beastly, but unnecessary.
There are now wireless flash drives, but they aren't cheap. You can get a 64GB WiFi flash drive on Amazon for about $50. I'm guessing it's an AP and works as a NAS, but I'm not really familiar with these things. But I'm betting it's easy to set up, and almost certain more than one device can access it. So there's an advantage, but then again it would also need to be charged.
If you wanna go with truly external (i.e. outside the phone) just get a portable hard drive. I only recommend Western Digital. The WD My Passport is around $60 for 1TB and $100 for 2TB. I have the old 500GB model and it's great. Actually running Portable Chrome off it right now on a Windows machine that isn't mine. I'm not trying to be sneaky or anything, I'm transparent with my hosts with what I'm doing, but it's nice to have my own bookmarks, extensions, all that good stuff. I can't imagine having 2TB. These things are small. Shorter than a smartphone but wider. Definitely pocketable, but you should be careful, they are not solid state, they have platters. Anyway, get a USB OTG cable, and you have to be rooted with Nexus to do this (HTC One M8 just does it), and you plug in the drive and bam, that's 500GB or 1TB or 2TB your phone can use. Drains battery like a ************, again spinning platters. So, best to copy the media files over that you want to use, and then unmount the drive (before unplugging it).
I feel, as a smartphone guy, the kit doesn't include just the phone. For me, I have a 2A charger base and cord (this is also my data cable), and a 10,000mAh battery and its cord (which doesn't work for data). I have a Quick Charger at home, really should swap it out for the 2A. And I carry the 500GB hard drive most places. Oh, and I also have a 64GB phone flash drive. I almost didn't mention this, but I have a flash drive that plugs into the base of a phone. It won't work with the 2015 Nexus phones because they're Type C, and it doesn't work with a lot of phones. My wife's 2013 Moto X for instance, can't read it. My M8 can. Got that for about $20. So that's in my kit as well, in a pouch with my Bluetooth earpiece.
Bottom line is, a microSD card slot is a luxury. It's nice to have, and it's damn cheap of Google to skimp on it (can they really cost Google that much?), but we have options.
I am having a smart phone with 32 GB. It is enough for me. So I am not facing any problem without SD card slot.
I currently have an Nexus 6 with 32GB storage.
For me, it is pretty much enough storage. I would probably get a 64 next time, but 32 does OK. The only thing that takes up any real space is TWRP backups (6GB each) and the MyBackup apps backups.
I guess I don't need as much storage as you and some people, and I don't know what you guys are needing 128GB storage for. For music I use Spotify. Even with my main playlists downloaded for offline play it's not that much space, I think they have an amazing compression algorithm because it sounds legit in my bluetooth headphones. What else is taking up big storage?
I can Netflix stream anything I want, I also have the sling capabilities in my DISH service, so I stream live TV on my phone like college football or any movie I want. Unlimited LTE with T-Mobile is a life saver! (sometimes I use 50 or 80 GB of LTE streaming per month)
So I cannot imagine needing any more than 64, and if I didn't have multiple ROM backups ("regular' users don't of course) 32 would be more than enough.
Now of course I'd prefer the option of MicroSD, but the benefits of a Nexus outweigh that one drawback, so I stick with the Nexus line of phones, and do weekly backups of anything truly important.
edit: just to add, Google does not forgo the option because of cost to implement it, but because they believe onboard storage is more secure and plays nicer with the OS. Also, keep in mind they can charge more for more storage. No one would buy the 64GB variant if the 16GB had a micro SD slot. Same concept as Apple I guess...
Oh hell no. If it doesn't have a MicroSD slot, I have no use for it... I've got a 128GB MicroSD and 32GB internal filled to the brim.
And I'm moderately screwed now, because I have 10MB free, and I need to put at at least 2 more seasons of 5GB each on there soon.... Bugger. That 256GB one out yet?

Everything.
Streaming is completely useless if you leave your house every once in a while.
And particularly useless if you live on a border. I can see the German border from my attic window, how stable do you think my network here is?
This is the average Dutch network on public transport once you leave the Randstad (main area with 4 largest cities, on the other side of the country):

I'm on public transport 6 hours a day. Good luck streaming on that.
Then there's the problem that there is no such thing as unlimited high speed data in the Netherlands. 12GB is the largest data subscription, and I can't afford to pay 60 quid a month. I've got 6GB.
I streamed part of the 8 o'clock news over 4G last week. (Horizon Go app). Those 5 minutes cost me 102MB. I've got 6GB, so that's a total of 5 hours that I can stream.
I can't even make it ONE DAY if I stream video. How can anyone consider that a solution? I require a total of almost 120 hours a month, not 5....
And then there's the fact that most of this isn't even available on streaming services. Netflix Netherlands has about 2% of what Netflix USA has. Supernatural? Nope. Doctor Who s9? Nope. Sherlock S3? Nope. Lord of the Rings Extended? Nope. Any Within Temptation or Blind Guardian concerts? Nope. Firefly? Nope. Person of Interest S4? Nope. Just to name a few.
If I have to rely on streaming to watch anything, I'll be staring at the ceiling for 6 hours a day. Not exactly my favourite pastime in a crowded train. :silly: I'd go completely bonkers in a matter of minutes...
This is what is currently on my MicroSD:
Video:
Supernatural Season 4, 6.45 GB
Supernatural Season 5, 6.45 GB
Supernatural Season 6, 6.44 GB
Supernatural Season 11, 257MB (So far; that's just episode 1.... I've got a problem tomorrow..... How am I going to squeeze another 257MB into a 22MB slot?)
Sherlock Season 1, 8,74 GB
Sherlock Season 2, 4,23 GB
Sherlock Season 3, 4,98 GB
(I'm screwed next year... Is that 256GB MicroSD out yet?)
Person Of Interest Season 4, 17,3 GB

Free Space: 22 MB.
thats why i have a device with sd slot. I need more than 32GB and i dont understand devices with 16gb without an sd slot
Well that's the difference then. I get at least 20 to 60 Gbps down everywhere I go, and I get unlimited LTE, so honestly I just don't need one...all depends on your situation I guess..
I have a Moto G (XT1032) with only 8GB storage but I've bought an OTG USB to add more memory. In its I've only songs.

If I were you, I would compress these videos or lower the resolution just a little haha - So that it would remains enjoyable anyway, but some people don't like to destroy quality/resolution even a bit (So if you would happen to watch on your TV, for instance).
Wanted to let you know that there IS a 200 GB microSD availible since the beginning of 2015, although it's obviously really expensive (Yeah, 200 GB, not 256. Absolutely true, that price is insane (For now), haha
My OnePlus One has 64gb, and I've found it to be plenty. I'm saving up for a 64gb Nexus 6 (old one). Obviously, I'd prefer a microSD slot, but 64gb gives me enough space. My Galaxy S4 has 16gb (less than 10 usable) and a 64gb card, which is also plenty, especially since I have several cards. My Nexus 4 16gb however...there's barely enough room for my standard apps, a game or 2, and a TWRP back-up.
Well, my phone is 16 GB and I think it is already enough for me. I rarely store files in my phone. So I am not facing any problem without SD card slot too.:cyclops:

Why do you keep everything on the phone? You don't need a complete series of something that's 200 hours long, especially not after you've watched it. I'm assuming you have all these video files on a PC somewhere and you manually copy them to the phone, so why not just clean up every now and then and delete what you've watched?

Two main reasons:
One, I'm not always able to access a computer to put new media on there, leading directly to Two: Because I rewatch them often. I've got a total of about 6TB of films and series to swap around, these are just the ones I leave on there. In particular the Sherlock and Supernatural seasons, those I watch so often it's simpler to just leave them on.
The problem is that a 32GB internal memory that has to share the space with apps, music, photo's and magazines isn't anywhere near enough to store 3 hours of videos, let alone 6 hours a day.
I'm not going to spend an hour every day swapping videos just because I didn't think ahead before I spend 800 euro/1300 dollar on a device that doesn't suit my needs. I've got more things to do... Now I've got enough space to last a week before I need to swap.
If these phones were 100 quid, sure. But not something that costs that much. I'm not going to change my needs to suit a tool.
I have an s4 32 GB
And its enough for me at least?
My previous phone was an HTC One X+ (64gb nonremovable) and it was more than enough for me.
I'm hoping for Marshmallow's new int+ext "RAID" for my G4, but since I'm on a carrier phone, who knows? ;(
