Prevent Cab installation to main memory? - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

I searched. I really did.
Is there a registry key that would allow or prevent installation of cab files to main device storage memory? I have users in Turkey who have the local version of the Kaiser and we can install cab files on the storage card but not on main device storage memory.

i dont get your question. you said that you can install them on storage cardd and you also asked how to prevent it from installing on device.
if you are installing on storage card, then what do you need to worry about the deviced?

dude anytime you install anything and you have a storage card in the device the Kaiser will ask you where to install the item. If this prompt doesn't appear you may have issues with your storage card.
In that case, put the microSD card into a converter and format it on your pc and try again.
If i am wrong then I have no idea what you are saying...

Let me try again.
We attempt to install a program via cab file to main memory. The installation fails with a message saying the installation is unsuccessful.
We then repeat the installation only this time we choose to install to the storage card. This time the installation is successful.
Question: Is this a registry key setting, or something else.
We need to install the programs to main memory. I suppose I should also validate that the program actually installed on the storage card as I've seen some that let always install to main memory no matter what you select.
Sorry for the poor wording last time.

What program are you attempting to install?

I am going on the assumption you are running a stock rom since I have no information to go from on your previous posts. Have you tried the certificates cab?
http://www.4shared.com/file/44361714/8baeab2a/sdkcerts.html

We are attempting to install a cab file related to an Oracle app. We have no problems like this with any of our other PDAs: US, Canada, France, Germany, etc...
We are running a stock ROM. It is a Turkcell Qtek S200
We do not want to disable the certificate checking due to security issues.
So far I would guess that there is no registry key that could cause this problem.

the guy has a point, there are some cabs that will still install to the device even if you chose storage card

This seems like a obvious question , but here goes. Are you sure you have enough main memory space? Oracle isn't known for their " lite " apps.

Here might be your answer:
http://freewareppc.com/utilities/cabinstl.shtml
I used to use this app for Dell Axim x50v which doesn't ask for location to install cab like the kaiser does when you have an sd card in.

Sorry for the delay in responding as I do appreciate the responses from others.
There is plenty of memory available but it is a fair question. The Oracle app we are installing is not that large.

Installing onto mini SD card?

Hi,
When I install something onto my Vario from my PC it automatically installs in the default location.
On my other PDA I get the choice, how come I don't with my Vario, and how can I install something to my mini SD?
Thanks all,
Thought I had sorted it, but no.
Any ideas, I want to install TomTom but don't have enough room.

Does the Vario use WM 2003? If so that is why everything from a PC install goes to main memory. Do a search, there is a cab installer program somewhere that you can put on your Vario that will allow you to select where you want to install.

Naa it uses WM5, my Axim uses WM2003SE and that asks.
Will do a search for the cab thanks.
Well the thing is, tomtom HAS to be installed to the device i guess. I always install tomtom naviagator 6.02 (with the todayscreen plugin). It comes up with where I wish to install it, sd card or the device. Of course i select the sd card, but nevertheless it installs in the device. I've tested it with several roms, and also with the WM6 rom. Problem is still there, so i guess it's not a bug but a feature, haha.

you can move the executables to the SD card and it will work... just move the navigator directory from program files to sd program files, make a link to it, and everything works... as for TT5 and TT6, have both installed on SD card. And also you can remove those TTODAY files from root dir if not using the TT today screen, and also all the files for contact navigation if you dont use that. At the end only the executable dir has to be somewhere.

TomTom installation directory

Hi all,
sorry if this has been posted before but I couldn't not find an answer anywhere.
Is it possible to force the TomTom Taster which comes on my Vodafone v1615 app CD to install to my microSD HC card?
At the moment it only installs to the device itself and the option "Install program into the default installation folder" in Activesync is greyed out (as it is with all apps found in the Add/Remove Programs screen when connected to the v1615).
I've installed TomTom Home but cannot see a way to move the installation folder or my one free map download to the microSD card.
Thanks for any help forthcoming
Macca
Its actually nothing worse than copying the TomTom installation folder to your storage card. At least thats what I did. Havent reinstalled TomTom in like 10 ROM-flashs/hard resets, I just make a new shortcut with each flash/reset.
i use tomtom and installed successfully to the tilt main phone storage w/no problems. the application isn't that big, only the map data which is on the sdhc card
check with tomtom support!
tvos
M4cr0s, thats exactly what I'm trying to achieve and have done with my previous iPAQ. So it is just a case of copying the installation folder over? This wont corrupt any installation files or reg pointers?
Macca
There are probably some reg pointers, but it since it works fine here they are either not necessary or the application will automatically create them if their not there. (actually surprisingly many applications works fine installed to storage card and just made shortcut to upon a new flash/hardreset)
To test, just copy the TomTom folder (program files/navigator I think the default path is for the kaisers bundled version) to your storage card, rename the original TomTom folder to something else and try run it from the storage card. If it works, you're pretty much set I'd say.

HTC Backup on your Wing.

I've had this .cab kicking around but never tried it till today. Seems to work great on my Wing. Not quite sure everything it backs up. It only works when installed to the phone -- won't work if you install it to the Storage Card.
It creates a file on your Storage Card used to backup your phone.
My guess is, that you could create the backup image file and then remove/uninstall the program to save space and then if you ever needed it, you could reinstall the program and just run the backup file. Or just leave the program on your phone.
Anyway, I don't know if anyone wants it but here it is.
Cheers!
This is neat to have. My question is, does this backup my profiles in the programs (like games) installed so next time I install/backup the program it will be restored? I'm thinking about flashing to new ROM...
Thanks.
no
you have to copy that stuff from either the app data folder or your program's folder usually
i been using this since i got my wing. this back-up every single thing from reg to program data..
ok guess i was wrong then

Awesome, thanks man!
I just saved this to my storage card and installed it on the storage card, is this correct? Should I save it to the phone memory and then back up to memory card?

I believe the answer you was seeking was in the first post. . . .
The PPCGeeks forum shows some users experiencing major issues with this software - beware .. ! Hard resets necessitated etc,,,
I have a weird problem with HTC Data Backup... I first installed it on the SD card because on the page I downloaded it from it didn't say you have to install it on the device, later I saw some people mention it in the comments... I've uninstall it and installed it again on the device, but I can't find it anywhere - it's not in the Programs, or Program Files, although I see it in Add/Remove applications... How do I start the program?

Storage of "cab" files

I have several cab file programs (PDS Status Full, HHC v10 Final, Google Maps and Youtubeplay), that are stored in the "My Documents" folder . Can I move them to the storage card and still run the apps. from there in order to free up memory on the device?
The CABs are installation files. Once you've opened them and installed them you can do whatever you want with them, move, delete, whatever. They're not needed anymore.
What kilrah said.
I just keep them in a dedicated folder on my storage card so I can easily reinstall the programs if required.

Ditto. I've reflashed my Hermes about 10 or so times and I'm pretty sure I'll do the same with the Kaiser. It's very convienient to have the installation files on the Storage card.
GREAT, thanks...
just upgraded from an 8525 to a Tilt in the last month and still learning. Found this site and have downloaded several programs mentioned here.

Kaiser can't read my microSD card

Help! My Kaiser can't read my memory card!
After having transferred a few media files to my Kaiser's microSD card using Activesync's "explore" function, I noticed some folders with gibberish names had been generated in the My Documents folder. I tried opening some of them and found nothing in them. I dismissed this and continued with the file transfer. The strangely-named files eventually disappeared
Shortly after, I disconnected the Kaiser from my laptop, and started the Audio Manager, as I was on my way to the gym. An error message popped up saying the "file Audio Manager cannot be opened..."
I can't remember what prompted me to do so, but I opened the File Manager and discovered that my Storage Card was not registering anymore. That said, I had to settle with the gym's crappy music, instead of my the playlists on my Kaiser
Coming back from the gym I popped the memory card (2GB Kingston microSD) into my card reader and my laptop was able to read all its contents.
This morning I tried a friend's microSD card (same make & model) and my Kaiser still couldn't read it.
Is this a hardware or software problem? If the latter, how can I rectify this?
Thanks in advance for any input.
Put it in your computer's card reader and do a filesystem check.

Watch out because Kaisers are well known for loosing whats on a microSD card (I've had this happen 3 times now) so I hope you have backed up everything of importance on your card before going any further.

I cant help with changing the gyms music but when you say "wasn't registering anymore" do you mean no files were showing in file manager (ie possibly corrupted/lost files - you never mentioned if you checked the file integrity on your laptop) or that under settings => memory => storage card tab, nothing is showing (whats in there)?

If it's software try a soft reset and if that doesn't fix it then back up your data and perform a hard reset (make sure the card is out of the device when you do this) - this is the Windows Mobile equivalent of running a recovery CDROM on a desktop PC and it will restore your devices files and settings to an 'as from the factory' state (assuming you've not changed the ROM/Radio or SPL since). Let us know how you get on.

"Storage Card" doesn't show up in File Manager at all. I'll try doing a file system check on my laptop.

It's easier than that... If you have Win XP (and probably Vista has an equivalent option), there is an often under utilised program under Start => Accessories => System Tools called 'Backup'. If you put your microSD card into it's USB reader, this program will do everything you need and it's very simple to use.

As already suggested by khaytsus, that'd be a good idea to try before going down the last ditch hard reset route.

Interesting... thanks for this. There aren't really any critical files in my memory card, so a simple copy of whatever's in the My Documents folder will do.

Nothing shows in the storage card tab. That's what I meant when I said the phone doesn't recognise the card.

The advantage with using backup is it automatically throws it all into a simple single archive and saves things such as the label on your card but yes if you have a simple set up a straight copy is an option. Bottom line is that additional software isn't needed for microSD card backups.

Yes, you're right I missed the 'System'. Thats the place where I'd trust more than file explorer to actually indicate whether the card is being read. Let us know how you get on!

I tested a friend's card from his TyTN II and put it into my phone and there was still no memory card detected. I gave him my card, and his phone was able to detect it.
I finally did a hard reset, reformatted my card, and the phone still can't detect the card!
It seems the problem may well be hardware-related. Looks like I'll have to send my phone in to HTC to be checked.
Thanks again to everyone who chimed in. 'will still give an update on how things go.

Got my unit back from the HTC service centre. They had to replace the part that contacts the memory card. The old one was toast. And to think I've only had this phone for just over a year now.
Had to pay about USD120 for the part
i've had my memory card not read all the files on it two times now but recently i've kept the file heirarchy intact and havent made any new folders on the phone and it seems to be ok
