Hey guys, I have been reading for a couple of hours on this forum and found some great info, but I'm still having some questions
1. dutty's rom, I've seen it on youtube, but is it actually faster than the normal rom? I mean, if you use tomtom by example, do you get better framerate on it?
2. if you put dutty's on, do you still get support from htc? like don't you void the warranty?
3. I've seen some original rom files, but if you put that on, doesn't it change the windows mobile license?
4. if you have dutty's, can you still copy contact info from msn into the contacts?
I have quite some experience with linux and windows programming, but to this mobile stuff, I'm totally a newbie
thanks

Your best bet is to go to kaiser rom development sections and read the stickies there.
1. yes, its faster
2. u loose warranty, but there is a tutorial how to revert it to the original rom in case of warranty
3. ?
4. never used that, buut I think yes
at 3 I mean: When you get an original rom from the forums, does it give you a different windows license? or is that just something inside the phone itself?
and, if dutty's is faster, does that also mean a longer battery life? I read something about better video drivers
thanks for the answers
I probably go for the dutty's now I think

battery life, reception, camera and some other things are influenced not by the rom, but by the radio rom.
Sorry but I dont understand what u mean by license. I am not from english-speaking country.
I don't think licensing is that big a deal with a phone. Infact I'm not sure if you can purchase a retail copy of windows mobile. These aren't home made computers.

no you can't buy a retail package
but you can register the os tough
edit:
I just found out there are more roms available (silly me)
can someone recommend me one?
I want better speed, but I like the normal rom shipped with the kaiser

Its 18 months or so since I joined this forum, and it was because of my new MDA Vario II.
I'm now due for an upgrade, and there is only one phone I want - the III.
So, tell me - what should I do? I'm so confused and disapointed. I use my Vario II to stream YouTube video and surf the web, and from what I've seen, the III isn't up to it.
Please tell me I'm wrong and I should call for my upgrade tomorrow !!!!

Get the kaiser
Seriously, do you want to buy mine off me / swap? T-mobile branded, but you can flash / do what you like with it.
I really can't use it as an everyday phone. On another forum (hexus.net) the guy said simply - it's not a phone as such. It's a tool for techs / devs or whatever who need the extra functions. But for a phone it lacks in many usability ways that your average nokia / SE / samsung does not. It's a shame really, the device has so much potential to be awesome, it's completely the software side of things that lets it down.
It has dropped a fair few useful features from WM5 / earlier versions too - like having a t9 text input rather than a touchscreen keyboard. Now you *have* to get the stylus out if you want to send a quick message without altering from portrait to landscape to use the hard keyboard, which takes around 2 - 3 seconds anyway for the hardware to redraw it.
Looks like HTC are working on the vids driver issue. Someone has suggested a patch in feb/march. Have a read of some of the posts on it.
take the plunge. get one.

Yea I read that. But also read a post saying that there is no driver due for release since there is no ATI Imageon hardware built in to have drivers for. Who knows? There comes a point where you need to say you've had a product that hasn't delivered what you expected for long enough. However, it is full of features so maybe a good choice. But if I was buying right now with the knowledge I have now I'd probably not get a smart phone but something nice and simple that could perfectly perform the duties I wanted it to
So short answer: it's up to you
Thanks for that feedback guys. I'm pretty use to my MDA and its functionality, even though making a call can be sometimes difficult.
So, is video playback as bad as is mentioned?
Also, I use voice dialing and the hands-free speaker. Are these functions on the III?
cheers guys,
Ratzz
I watch youtube on mine all the time. I think it is just fine. I have been using the Kaiser now for 5 months and I love it and would not make another choice.
kaiser really is something
Yes those feature are in it out of the box. U should get one. All in all, it is the best pda out yet. I personally love mine, and with the right rom u can make it fly. It doesnt have problems with any 320X240 video, and with the new coreplayer 1.1.3 not even with bigger ones so get it. It's a great pda phone!

The Vario II is the HTC Hermes. Have a look here at the upgrading forum. There are some stickies on HardSPL, which you must follow before upgrading the ROM. http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=306
Whats the lastest way to fix the camera and video camera on this phone. The picture is like very choppy and unclear. I saw another tilt camera and it does the same thing. Any solutions.
Bonus Question Whats a ROM?
Don't laugh too hard. I'm just a freshman at this.
what ROM are you using? I have no problems at all with my camera on my Tilt.
I guess the Att rom. i havn't really changed that much on my phone just added some apps.

Read sticky threads at the top about flashing HardSPL to your device, then you can choose a ROM to reflash.
ROM is like... mmm like package: OS + lots of different software.
I'd recommend Dutty's v4 ROM for Tilt.
ALso, make sure that you understand the risks of flashing. This may void your warranty with AT&T (not like they really give one, though..) or even brick your device (make it totaly useless) it you're not doing it right.
Read, read, read. It's fun stuff, really.
Do i lose my info on my phone and all my apps and settings when I flash?

Previous poster is right - go read up on it. It's a commitment you want to be ready for. Or you gonna flash Dutty's v4, see "TV static" screen, freak out and pass out. Or something.
But yes, you will lose everything. So sync up with outlook and make backups (hint: use PIM backup (google it)).
Software-wise - you can get everything here. If you have software you paid for, then save install packages someone in safe place (NOT ON PHONE) along with serial #s. You can reinstall after reflash.

very first hit on Google
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Read-only_memory
Read-only memory (usually known by its acronym, ROM) is a class of storage media used in computers and other electronic devices. Because data stored in ROM cannot be modified (at least not very quickly or easily), it is mainly used to distribute firmware (software that is very closely tied to specific hardware, and unlikely to require frequent updates).
Google is very powerful tool, just need to use it often.....

Just a note (and a plug), Best Buy's service plan will cover you bricking your phone
Note: I work for Best Buy Mobile (Partnership of Best Buy & Carphone Warehouse), and my statement might be biased.. however, AT&T doesn't insure it, and I wouldn't trust them on manufacturer warranties for the tilt. However, I know there are other options available for protecting your device

Never actually had to use my warranty service, but square trade guarantees 5 day turnaround or they pay you your purchase price and warrant is I think 10% of your purchase price. I believe that it includes user stupidity; but, I can't be sure on that one.

know of a good rom for my mom? Something simple? User friendly...? pm me ok.
This thread still poses NO solution to tilt camera problem
There are several things out there that I have tried and both of them caused me to not see anything before a picture was taken. In other words the viewer was black until I took a picture and it actually took the picture but I could not see anything in the viewer before pushing the button. Neither of the cab files I found solved this problem. After removing the programs, my camera was back to the sorry state it was in when it came out of the box. It's hard to believe that a PDA with as much going for it as the Tilt, has such a crumby camera. SOMEBODY FIND A WAY TO FIX THIS PLEASE

Where would i go to get that i downloaded the HTC WM 6.0 already from the site but will that give me the business card reader and stuff?

AND is it possible if i got a broken tytn 2 with the hsdpa video camera on the front i could install that and it work?

As KD8DNS said - your post sounded redundant because you began with the 'what is the best rom' type of thread - and we get so many of those
As for the HTC to AT&T camera question - I haven't seen any posts that suggest you can or can't do it. I would think that there is a connector or something on the AT&T board which hasn't been soldered in place so would require some soldering etc. If you're feeling adventurous you'd probably be better off trying to move the working boards, screen etc from the tilt to the HTC phone and flash a compatible rom - it's the sort of experimentation I'd try just before upgrading so if I screwed up I could justify the upgrade
If you play around with this, please post results
All,
I am new to this forum and I am a noob to smartphone.
I have been reading this forum for the past a few hours. I found some answers but still have a few basic questions
I may using a Touch Diamond (Sprint CDMA) version.
1. Do I have to flash the phone to be able to use cool themes, customzie touch-flo and display?
2. Will I still have all the functions (text messeging, data plan connection, etc)? I know this sounds stupid but I couldn't send/receive messege with my iphone after unlocking.
4. What is manilla? A software to customzie the phone?
Thanks,
welcome dude,
I am new to this forum as well. One advise, back up or sync with your ooutlook or whatever you are using and then EXPERIENCE EVRYTHING URSELF BY READING AND APPLYING, AND IN THE WORST CASE IF THINGS GO WRONG JUST HARD RESET YOPU PHONE.
Thats how I learnt to tweak and modify my diamond with trials and errors.
YOU CAN DO IT , IT JUST TAKES TIME

Please be aware that most of the threads here are for GSM devices. Read carefully before flashing anything as one small error and say bye bye to your phone. The first thing is to flash your phone with a Hard SPL (protects device from being bricked). Please Look Here ....

If you do enough reading, I have no doubt you will flash your phone. The ability to change Rom's and Radio's to improve both performance, battery life, customization above and beyond your typical theme park frills......
Most members here are addicted flashers. No...not that kind!! Wow, some of us just go right to the gutter with phrases like that one...lol
I changed to WM 6.5 last night. I had the AT&T 6.1 rom before.
With both ROMs, my camera is just black. Doesn't show anything at all (not even darkly.
Any ideas? It's probably not software if it doesn't change when I update the ROM right?
I don't care for 6.5 much, so I'm going to try another 6.1 rom in a minute...
Thanks
Your radio ROM is incorrect for whatever hardware/ROM revision you are using. Experiment around with different radios until you get one that allows your camera to work.
Nice of you to search for the oldest problem out there.

Thanks for the advice. I'll just assume in the future that if I search and find nothing, that I must have used the wrong terms, and shouldn't bother asking in the future. Glad you saved me.
I did search. Now, when I searched "radio rom camera problem" (after the 1st response) I got tons of hits. When I searched "8925 camera is black only" I got nothing relevant. It's new to me.
Well, oddly enough, I encountered a much more serious problem with the ROM I was using, so I went back to 6.1 (I don't like 6.5 for some reason)
After loading the AT&T 6.1 rom, the camera works...
Thats because the ATT ROM has an included radio, which evidentally is one that works with your hardware revision and enables the camera.

Ok- So Radio rom can be flashed with or without the OS rom? Good to know.
The radio rom has to match the hardware? Or the OS?
I'd like to give the WM6.5 rom another try, if I can get everything to work

A couple years late to the Kaiser party, but I still love my Kaiser and it my not be as flashy and my be a tick slower and may not have the spacious screen that the HD2 has, but with a custom rom and a little tweaking, it does everything An HD2 does, and I love my keyboard.
Windows Mobile isn't dead, it was just taking a long vacation while Steve and Bill and the others were playing the " fat cat " billionaire roles to the hilt while the company went down the toilet.
Hopefully Windows Phone 7 series is the start of a resurgence that will integrate Windows, Windows Mobile, Zune OS and XBox into a fully integrated powerhouse, before it is too late.
Maybe Apple overtaking them is exactly what they need.
