Well for a week now my internet connection has been bad. Youtube don't work, can't download any files but i can surf the web just fine. Has At&t put a block on downloading or whatever ?
I would suggestcompleting your user profile to that other members have an idea of where you are located (or give that info in the post).
I'm in Northern Illinois and don't have any issues.
I'm in Utah and haven't had any noticeable problems. I'm trying to replicate your problem to no avail....

where are you located, i'm outside st. louis and i don't have any bad problems, once in a blue moon my 3g won't connect, some error about the remote party ended the connection, but that takes a quick reboot on my PIE and it's good
I'm in the Dallas Texas area and have had intermittent internet issues ever since the Tornadoes went through last week.
No noticable problems here in Memphis. Once in a while, a page not found comes up in Opera, but a reload usually gets it the next time. I should also add that downloading works fine for me.
Cincinnati Ohio, is having edge problems due to 3g upgrades in outlying areas around Cincinnati, When 3g upgrades are being done it effects the edge network. The 3g upgrade takes approx a week, and I a as regional technician for AT&T am always fighting this issue so be calm. DAMMIT you made me sound like a HTC spokesperson....."we are currently working on the issue" HA AH AH
Detroit,
and yes, issues for a few days, they were upgrading Edge to 3G around me though, (about time!! woohoo!!) and I had funky issues for the last few days, but normal now.

Will give it a try and report back.
All good here
No issues here in Detroit MI
I've had issues for at least a week now. I'm also in Dallas, TX. No rhyme or reason or way that always works to fix it either. Sometimes i can go to Comm Manager, turn off date connection, then open IE and it works. Then sometimes that doesn't work at all. It's getting extremely frustrating! Emails won't download, RSS hub can't connect, no IE, no Google Maps, ugh! hope they fix it soon. what data plan are you on btw?
I have had issues in Milwaukee the last couple days in the evening where it would show a data connection but would not send or receive data for hours. reboots didnt fix it during those times either
Miami, Florida
All good here, no dropped connections whatsoever using Edge and 3G.
Guess you can add me to the list. Live in Irving, but work in Dallas. Same issues and same time-frame. Also, I am on PDA Max.
Still having the same problem, At&t said there's no issues in my area. Started on Monday, maybe updating there network or something. Hate paying for something that's not working right.

I'm having problems too. GPRS issues mainly. I'm on MediaNET using wap.cingular.
Well my billing period just started, now everything is working find. Maybe I used too much data? Do At&t have a cap on unlimited?
no they dont have a cap, but you get charged after 5gb of data.
I couldn't send MMS all saturday, i'm in central texas, so i called customer support and turned out they were updating the servers or something like that and people in texas were experiencing data issues, but everythings working now.

Hi, the search button has failed me. (Two posts in 2 years isnt too bad is it?)
My issues is.... accessing the internet over 3g works fine (and HPSDA) Internet, push mail everything... however, If I drop out of coverage at any time my internet connection vanishes as to be expected. However once connection is re-established still the Internet fails to work. It shows connected to 3G or HPSDA but all websites time out and Activesync reports waiting for network.
The fix is to go Start>Settings>Connections>Connections>Manage my existing connections.
Then I simply "Next" thru all the settings until I get to the end. Press Finish. The data connection drops and the re-establishes and Im working again!?!! Very Annoying!
Im running. Duttys 6.1 Rom (April) and a few bits a pieces (It happens with nothing installed also and with another ROM I tried in desperation!) T-Mobile UK
Does this sound like a Radio issue to you guys? Should I try another Radio or Ditch Dutys Rom? (Which I love)
Any help gratefully accepted.
If Downgraded to WM6 (T-Mobile stock ROM) and Im still having this issue. Very frustrated.
I've found a few posts from the US who seem to have the same sort of issue. 3g does not recover after dropping out of service.
http://forums.wireless.att.com/cng/...thread.id=88007&view=by_date_ascending&page=1
Not sure what to do now...
I've had the same sort of thing, I just disconnect (Long press on the red End call key or click on the 3G icon in the top bar and hit disconnect), and let it reconnect.
I have exactly the same issue with mine as well and its only started recently. I too have found the only way to fix it is to go through and 're setup' the connection. Disconnecting and reconnecting, rebooting all seem to do nothing...

Which symbol is most of the time in the top of your screen G/E/3G/H...?! Check this one out also --> my 3G issue
I usually have a H (1 or 2 bars), when walking around my office this can drop to a 3G connection at times.
If I head to the basement, I drop to the Areial symbol or completely disconnect.... When the H or 3G connection starts again my Data connection fails as described above.
(However, I am able to make normal outgoing voice calls, not tried incoming yet)
Ok, I think I have a work around that seems to be working for me.
I set my BAND to GSM only as a test.... and it worked for the whole day, when I dropped into a NO SERVICE area the data connection dropped. When it recovered my data connection was back and working.
Obviously GSM is too slow, so I've now set my BAND settings to;
Network Type - WCDMA
UMTS Band - UMTS(2100+800)
And also diasabled HSDPA.
Currently everything seems ok... Now my connection does not drop from HSDPA>3G>G and back up again it seems to work fine?? Seems the issue may be with switching between the GSM standards??
I realise I wont get coverage in GSM only area's, but consistant data (Push Email) is just as important to me.
I've the same problem, but changing settings to gsm only is no solution. In this case I have to restart my Kaiser to get a new working connection.
I also have many Problems since updating to wm 6.1. Can I downgrade to the original german 6.0 or is there a really stable german 6.1 out there?
I've been getting the same problem as well for the past month or so.
Have been 'fixing' the problem by either putting the phone into airplane mode and back again, or rebooting the phone.
It's getting quite annoying though
Stopping the phone dropping to GSM seems to work for me. Leaving me with HDSPA and 3G.
I'm lucky to be in a good 3G coverage area I guess.
Im not sure who we should log this issue with? Carrier or HTC?
Are we all on T-Mobile having this issue?
i'm on o2 germany and a one day test with t-mobile didn#t show this error
with o2 i have this problem about three times a day
any new ideas since july ?
Sometimes i want to throw my phone away.
I'm still having the problem as well. Has anybody figured out a solution?
This might be a silly question, but does anyone know if the G1 will be able to access the web if you live in an area where 3G is not available yet? I live north of Los Angeles (who has 3G) in Bakersfield and we don't have it yet. I am hoping that I was not an idiot to preorder the phone and then not be able to use all the cool web features.
Thanks in advance,
Jamie
it should still work on the EDGE network
From my understanding it will work with GPRS, Edge, and 3g so you shouldn't have any problems bro by the way I understand the concern.
With a 1150ma battery, GPS, "big" screen etc, 3G will just drain the battery even quicker.
I will not worry about 3G until an extended battery is released- and the fact that 3G will not be in my market for a year of so.

Hey guys i have a htc wing now, and it does not have a gps. It looks like the gps for this phone is one of the main highlights, because it uses it for a lot of applications. Does anyone know what the gps strength will be like? Will it work will in a building, it do i have the be in direct light for like ten minuites to get a signal?
Anyone with a htc device with a gps already, does it work well?
I hear the android is a-gps, so mabye it will have the ability to somewhat work well when in a pocket, or building.....

Time for a lesson on GPS... It uses satellites in the sky, and you need a view of a certain amount of satellites to find your location (4 will find you but not very accurately, the more the better). If you're in a building, and not right next to a window, no GPS will ever find your location, ever. That's like asking if your internet will work if the ethernet cable is unplugged from the back of your computer and you don't have wifi, it goes against the entire idea of how it functions.
Now, as for the quality of the HTC GPS receiver... People have complained about GPS lag, but I maintain my opinion that it's completely software related, my Fuze had none whatsoever. You don't need to be in sunlight, just have enough clear sky that it can get a reading from the satellites. I've taken trips with the Fuze even on very cloudy days and it took a little longer to get a lock (5-10 mins, it locks in like 30 seconds to a minute with clear skies) but once it had my position, it stayed true. All of the upcoming HTC devices use A-GPS, by the way. Diamond, Touch Pro, Xperia, G1...

He's using the battery draining as an excuse, something to keep him from pulling his hair out because he won't have 3G for another year. Anyone who's used a phone for data features on both networks knows EDGE doesn't hold a candle to 3G.
As for the original post, yes, it will give you all of the same data features on EDGE as on 3G.
The big thing with A-GPS is that it's mainly used to increase the startup speed of your GPS. Instead of waiting 10 minutes to download the almanac of the satellites in the sky from the GPS sats, it downloads the data over your data connection, using the basis of which cell site you're connected to for determining your rough location. This way it only takes about 30 seconds to get a fix instead of much longer.
The sensitivity of the GPS on phones has been fairly good as far as i've seen on devices like the Tilt and such, so I don't see why a phone with such a heavy emphasis on location-based apps would have a sub-par GPS setup. Here's hoping things work well.

Exactly... But when you're without 3G, I guess you try to justify why it's not as good, and that's what he came up with. It's like everything though, people on here try to justify why the iPhone isn't as good as the Diamond/Touch Pro, truth be told it's better in many aspects but comes short in many as well.

I choose D... all of the above
No... it will not work out of the box.
Yes/maybe... it should work someday soon unless HTC/T-Mobile have somehow disabled that ability in hardware.
As soon as I get the phone I will be working on it on the Linux side (not an actual internet sharing app... more of a route/iptables script) and I am sure someone will work on a java solution (although a kernel solution would be faster). There was an application for the iPhone that provided internet sharing but it was banned from apple store and Google has said they won't do that so I think it should be here soon.

I have an issue with my G1 WIFI connection. If i broadcast my SSID I connect with no problems. but if i disable the broadcast it will not connect, and this is with me manually putting in the connections into the phone.
I called TMobile but they said i needed to call HTC. they didn't have a solution.
BTW, I have no WEP enabled. I just disable the SSID broadcast.
I just connected to my Linksys router with WPA2 and had 3G running, connected no problem.
Haitiankid: try entering the details of your network manually and seeing if it will connect then. Also, as for the 3G fading in and out, are you in a week signal area for 3G?
wifi working
I got my wifi to work. It was my routers fault. What I did was in went into my routers settings by typing 192.168.1.1 and entered 'admin' (no quotes) and no password. Once in my settings I changed my brocasting type from b&g mixed to all mixed changed frequency to auto, changed network key from shared to open and wifi started working. I don't know if all those steps were neccesary but it worked for me. Hope it works for some else.
As for the 3g it seems to be getting better
for those of you with the 3g/edge switching problem...
Hey, if uve got the 3g switching to edge back and forth continuously, its likely because you didnt get a new SIM card when u got the g1. It simply means you have an old SIM card that doesnt support 3g well, call tmobile up tell them your situation, theyve given most people a free new SIM card thats more compatible.

I don't think that's the case. I've had the same SIM card since 2000, no problems like this. If any SIM is too old to support 3G, I'd think one made 8 years ago would definitely be the case.
It sounds like he's in a bad coverage area, which could be lots of things. There is a coverage map on the T-Mo website, don't know if it shows 3G. Or it could be the building he's in. My phones have never worked at my grandmother's house. I get full bars on the front porch, and full bars the second I get out the back door, but no signal in the house itself. Even relatives on other networks get little to no coverage inside the house. Probably the really really old insulation and building materials are blocking the signal. At my last apartment I only had a good signal on the corner of my bed, and that disappeared when new neighbors moved in upstairs.
These are radio waves, which aren't foolproof or perfect, they encounter all kinds of interference. Nothings going to be as secure and consistant as a wired connection. Nature of the beast, unfortunately.

Careful dude, with the security set to open anyone within range (neighbors, wardrivers, etc.) can use your wifi to get on the internet. Try using WPA or WPA2 security, but leaving it all mixed and frequency at auto.
I'm not sure if this should be in the general section or in the software section because I'm not really sure what it is.
Anyway, my tethering speed has drastically slowed over the past few days.
I was getting about 28-30 kbs per second during downloads, and now, I'm at a forever slow 2-5 kbs per second.
I've tried resetting my phone and my computer hoping that would do something, but it's still just slowly chugging along.
I even installed a new radio hoping it would do something, but nothing happened.
Any ideas what could be causing this?
Some info would help.......
Who is your provider?
What general area are you in?
Have you checked to see if they are having tower issues ( Other users in your general area having issues too) ?
What kind of signal strength do you have?
What rom/radio are you using?
What spl are you using?
Are you connected via Edge, GRPS, 3G , or HSDPA?
Have you installed any software at all before this all started happening?

My provider is at&t.
I'm in the Metro-St. Louis area.
I haven't checked if they're having tower issues. I guess I should have done that...
I've got all of my bars, like usual.
My rom is one of the NATF final roms with the hermes 6.1 radio, and before that, I had a niki radio. I updated to the hermes to see if it helped anything.
and in my area, I usually have edge connection.
and no, I havent installed any software.
do u have tethering plan?
if so callup att and tell them. i know they are messing around w/broadband speeds and this might have spilled over to wireless as well.
Do you know how your connected? G,E,3G,H?
In my area, I'm usually connected to edge.
I called at&t and there isn't anything wrong with the towers around me or anything.
Now I'm really confused.
I put on a new rom yesterday, and it's still going super super slow.

Have you tested for the problem in another location? I had a similar problem in the area where I worked on a project recently (about 15 miles from home). At first, everything was fine there. Then for about a week, the data service got so bad I could hardly connect at times. Called AT&T to complain, gave them the location and they told me they had no reports of anything wrong with the towers there, even though everything worked fine for me elsewhere.
Did a hard-reset, cleaned off the phone and didn't re-install anything, and tested it again. Same problem.
After about two weeks, the problem suddenly disappeared. Apparently I wasn't the only one calling in to complain every day.
It's still going mad slow.
I think I just might have to bite the bullet and get a new phone if noone else has any other suggestions.

What are your connection settings ?
Are you connecting to isp.cingular or wap.cingular ?
Do you have a Pda Plan?
Try deleting all of your settings and putting in this configuration
For both of these make sure the modem is " Cellular Line ( GPRS, 3G ) "
Call this config My ISP
Apn= isp.cingular
User Name = [email protected]
Password = CINGULAR1
Disable the proxy
If that still wont connect
Apn = wap.cingular
User Name = [email protected]
Password = CINGULAR1
Again, make sure the proxy is disabled
Dont select any of the compression settings / ect. Let it stay as default.
Test again and give us your results.
P.S.
The name/password is CASE SENSITIVE so make sure you are using caps exactly as I have for both. ONLY the APN is lower case!
Goodluck and we hope to hear from you soon!
PPS.
Proxy settings are under the tab that says "Proxy Settings"
Make sure you have "This network connectes to the internet" checked and "this network uses a proxy server to connect to the internet" UNCHECKED.
I had problems similar to to this. I would connect and everything seem fine until I tried to download a large file or large amount of data (like a heavy, app-filled website) then my connection speed would drop to near nothing or even completely stall, forcing me to disconnect/reconnect to fix the problem.
In my case it turned out to have something to do with my TCP window size.
I got a copy of TCPoptimizer and started playing with the settings of my laptop, the default setting was about 126000, but I found that I would get the slowdown or stalling with any setting above 40000!
I now have it set to about 26000 and it works great! 1.8 mbs!
I'm not a network guy, but i think that the long latency, fading, shadowing, etc. of the 3G connection was causing the large packet size not to download completely, necessitating duplicate attempts to get the packet.
It would make sense to me that a larger TCP window would mean a faster connection, but in my case this turned out not to be true.
Maybe one of the NT Gurus on here could explain it
So, I would suggest you get TCPoptimizer, or DRTCP and try changing the network settings of your laptop, and then use a registry editor for your Tilt to change the settings there too.
Hope this helps,
SF
I guess it was just the network, because a few days ago, it just started working normally. Thanks to everyone that helped though.

Fortunately the issue has been resolved but you never did report back regarding WAP vs ISP. Earlier this month I had a long layover at O'Hare and ran into the same issue - slow, slow, and slow (26 down, up was norm), but that was on 3G, switched to EDGE and it was good to go. Not only was this on my Tilt, but aircard as well. Network issue, not Tilt. Hence why a quick speed test between 3G/EDGE helps answer the question...
Has anyone else had trouble with loading web pages occassionally on T-Mobile's data connection?
Every once in awhile, web pages simply won't load, and I get the "This Page Cannot Be Displayed" error. It seems like I have to close all my tabs and then open a page to get it working again. This "glitch" or whatever it is, doesn't happen on WiFi, but has happened numerous times on the data connection.
Is this happening to anyone else??? It's like T-Mobile is trying to throttle the connection or something... I haven't used THAT much data

I have noticed this too, but when I look I usually have dropped to Edge from 3G. I think it has more to do with the 3G signal than the device itself. Possibly issues with your location the construction of the building you are in overhead fluorescent light, all of those might factor into the dropping signal. Just a theory.
I was pulling some CRAZY download speeds on mobile speed test website.
I was actually getting 25 Mb down consistently... With a 7 Mb sample size and about 5 different tests on 3G! The phone was blazing fast at the time too.
When I got home on wifi my speeds were back to normal - around 9 Mb.
I wonder if they were doing some network upgrades in Princeton NJ today?
Pretty crazy, and while it may have been the speed test was whacky, I really don't think it could've have been wrong on that many separate tests.
Anyway, that's my input. I think data has been good.

Yea, speed is no issue. I get 9 or 10 Mbps download speeds regularly. The problem is as I described, once in a while pages simply refuse to load, and I basically have to restart the browser. You have never experienced that? Thanks to the other user for your feedback, that might be true about it switching from 3G to Edge, I'll try to pay attention to that the next time it happens.
yeah, i got the issue you mentioned earlier this afternoon. hitting the refresh button doesn't seem to help either.
On several occasions, I've struggled to get a decent data connection, despite there being an apparent signal. Turning the data off and back on again in settings->mobile network has fixed it, but it is frustrating.

Yep. well it's good to know that others are experiencing it. I don't believe it is a problem with T-Mobile's network, since my old WinMo phone worked just fine. I wonder if people on ATT have this issue, cause I would say it is something that needs to be fixed in Windows Phone in general. I'll post the question in their Samsung Focus forums.
I usually do not have any problems with the data on my device.
But one thing I have noticed that is happening frequently on my phone was... It gets stuck in 'G' (which I think is GPRS, worst than Edge). After a bit of analysis, I have realized, that when I get into and out of a tunnel (I take a subway to work), at times, my device does not get the 3G and stuck in G.
But once I reboot the phone, I am back to full signal.
Again, this DOES NOT always happen. Only once in a while.
On the whole I am actually VERY HAPPY with the data speeds. I was actually amazed to see how Netflix app was streaming movies seamlessly on my device with out any hiccups even while passing through areas where the coverage fluctuates from 3G to Edge and back.

hi all, I have the following problem: buy a t-mobile hd7 released, I need to manually configure the 3G connection and I have that option. I live in Argentina and so far with my previous phones had no problems (hd2 htc, htc desire, xperia x10) thanks
I have noticed this issue too and I don't think it's t-mobile but on a positive note the web pages load up very fast.
I have a bit of an odd issue. Tethering with WiFi Tether Router app from the stop has been working until last week. Both LTE and 3G. Then last week I had the infamous 3G issue. I did a factory reset and when that didn't work I tried a profile update (I know probably backwards). After the profile update 3G works great. However, this week when I tried to tether things went south. It connects fine to the AP, you can do a dns lookup and it succeeds, Skype connects, torrents work great, but you can't get to any websites at all. Tethering with 3G works fine other than the fact that it's slow. I have tried on stock rooted by Capt, Bad Boyz, and CM. All of them worked last week, but none of them work this week. Fabio from the tether app suggested I look at the APN settings and make sure that default, supl, mms, dun were all set up as APN types. When I took a look in there only default and hipri were set as types. The strange thing is that it seemed to work for a little bit after initially setting that up. Now its back to not working. I can telnet to port 80 on servers that I know are web sites and I get the expected results back, so I know the router is passing port 80 traffic, it just wont allow an actual website to download. I have tried to connect a surface, Windows Phone, and a Windows laptop and all get the same results so I am fairly certain it isn't on the connecting device side.
Anyone have any thoughts or has anyone seen this?
Update ---
This morning when I went in to work I decided to give it a try again because that was the last location where it worked. It appears this issue may be location specific. In downtown San Antonio none of the tethering methods work with 4G but in the far west (SeaWorld) tethering 4G works...
Man I have the same damn problem, It's almost like Sprint is blocking certain things, we know for a fact they cap LTE, which sux cuz I like sprint they have good plans

Can you throw up a link about them capping LTE?
I haven't been able to get tether to work for me and I wonder if this is one of the reasons.
