Stop charging when tethered to laptop - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Can anyone think of a clever way to stop the kaiser drawing charge (ie auto charging) from a laptop when tethered. I ask because I use it as a usb-connected modem when travelling, but find that the power draw leaves me with a nice full battery on the phone, and a laptop-sized door stop after less than an hour. Which is not ideal. Is there a way of either stopping the Kaiser from charging when connected, or of stopping the power supply to the usb port, perhaps?
Thanks

In Settings --> Power --> Advanced Tab
There is a check box for 'When device is turned on, do not charge battery when connected to the PC'
Haven't tried it my self but this sounds like what you want

2nd poster is correct and yes, it does exactly what it says on the tin...

not sure what ROM you're using.....
I just got my Tilt last week and am still running the AT&T version.
Under Start\Settings\Power\Advanced tab, I have an option to check that states the following
"When device is turned on, do not charge the battery when connected to the PC"
Sounds like what you might be looking for...

You really are very clever people indeed! Thank you all.

Please tell us how you found out this information! was it in the user manual or did you find out from XDA also? I myself read the user manual when I got my Tilt so I wouldn't fill like a fool asking questions like that.
G.W.E.N.I. - can you put this in your sticky?

Just came across it while kicking the tires on the new device. I sych with a desktop and use it for charging during the day and it seemed odd to me that someone would want to usb connect with out charging. guess it just kinda stuck with me and when I saw this post I had a Eureka moment....
I was surprised when I posted to the original and saw that someone beat me to the punch......
Glad to help out

Rogue9 you are a gentleman (or woman) an I like your under-signature-thing. I get the impression firms like htc have got the message that no-one reads manuals these days so think "what's the point putting any effort into them?" !!!http://1.2.3.11/bmi/forum.xda-developers.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

Noob question here

Right ive had my Diamond since Sat, havent had much of a chance to play with it because the battery died on me yesterday...didnt really charge it once i got...just turned it on and let it drain. Plus i wasnt at home last night, gf wanted to see me so ended up going round hers which meant i couldnt use the Diamond as i couldnt charge it etc.
Anyways ive come home earlier this evening and put it on charge....got home about 6pm and charging it via my laptop...now one thing that concerns me is that its still charging even though the battery meter is full. Is that normal or do i have a dodgy battery on my hands??. I was under the impression that once its fully charged, the white light around the middle buttons stays solid but on mine it keeps flashing around...anyone help??
My other problem is and please excuse me as this is my first WM device...im trying to install a few cab files and also schaps advanced config as well. Now coming from a symbian phone, nokia n95 8gb to be exact...i dont know how i go about installing these cab files or schaps advanced config onto my phone. I have my connected to my laptop and its synched with windows mobile device centre...cant install activesynch as its not compatible with Vista...which is what im running on my laptop.
So can anyoen help a WM noob here?? and explain to me how i go about installing those cab files etc and also whether my battery is dodgy or not??.
Thanks in advance for any help
concerning the .cab-files: just copy them onto the phone and run them from the file explorer. Just as you would run a program on a winbox.

Ahhh ok i havent tried that...is there anywhere in particular i should copy them to??. I guess internal storage would be the best place??. Once ive done that...is it ok to delete the zip files?? as they come in a zip format.
it dont matter where on the phone they are put
and it dont matter if zip's they org came in are deleted
Thanks Rudegar,
I put them in the phone like the previous poster said and they are now installed.
Thanks alot guys, i feel embarrassed that i didnt know this
Any ideas as to the battery charging question??
The battery could appear full, but in reality still need some juice. It shouldn't take too long from that moment till the light appears solid though... I've noticed that charging using the AC charger goed must faster than through the USB port.

So I'm guessing you are using one of your own USB cables? Could it be that you are using a mini-USB v1 plug (without audio, so less connections)? Not from experience, but I read that charging using one of those cables goes way slower. This could explain why it takes longer between appearing 'full' and actually being full.

Nope im using the supplied cable that came with the phone.
Im going to let the battery drain again then try with the AC Adaptor and see how long it takes to charge from there...if its taking a few hrs like it did with my laptop then ill know i have a dodgy battery.
AC goes way faster than laptop
Generally a USB port only tends to supply 100mA without a request, that is if the device (in this case your diamond) requests more current then you can get up to 500mA i think (from a single USB controller...usually controlling 4 ports).
Looking at my Hermes charger the output is rated as 1A at 5V which is a fair bit higher than the USB port could ever deliver.
Charging via USB will always be slower than with an AC adapter
sorry im a ****, re-read, and you already have wmdc
Also, most popular Payware programs come with exe installers, that install to wmdc, then when you sync, it copies the CAB over, installs and deletes the CAB. So saves space on the storage, but no installing after a hard reset while on the go, which is why everything i need is on my storage card

Sounds like you are on the same wavelength as me .. never been convined by the diamond purely because it seems like a fashion phone but so far am impressed. Was going to get a X7510 but now might stick as Citrix ICA looks small but OK on VGA of Diamond.
Spawn12 let me know what u decide 2 do (apologies typinis difficult just got back from boozer...)

Again thanks guys, i just realised that charging via usb is always going to be slow ie my ipod touch takes forever to charge fully but using the ac adaptor plug...it will charge fully in less than an hr.
Anyways that problem has been solved so thanks again guys for clearing that up for me.
The problem i had with installing the cab files has been rectified...put them on my storage and then installed them via file explorer and they work perfectly. Resco explorer installed like symbian programs install on symbian phones...installation starts in windows but you complete the install on the phone.

Phone freezes after being charged all night?

99% of the time, i charge my phone over night when im sleeping, however everytime i do this i wake to find my phone has frozen. This means anyone who has tried to call or txt me during the night hasnt gotten through. The phone rings for them, but at my end the phone just stays blank.
This is the only time my phone freezes (within limits) and the fact it happens every night without fail seems a tad odd.
My old kaiser did the same but iv started to get a tad fed up of this, does it do the same for anyone else? Or does anyone know a way around it?
Im running Dutty's 6.1 hybrid, on UK t-mobile.
cheers guys
How are you charging it?

Is it plugged into a PCs USB port, using a mains charger (if so is it the official one supplied with the device)? Have you tried swapping charging methods (or chargers if you have a spare) to see if the problem goes away? Do you have a spare battery you can swap in?
thanks for the response!
Its an offical HTC charger plugged into the wall, and as far as i can tell charging it via the computer is fine, but then again i dont leave it plugged into the computer for 12 hours.
I dont have second battery to try but the fact that this is a totally new phone & battery and i had this problem with my old phone aswell. iv also swopped the chargers around and it still happens.
are you in wifi mode
Sometimes when I leave the wifi mode on it will freeze, make sure the wifi is off at night. Hope this helps.
Cheers
cheers, wifi is always off though!
Kind of bugging me, especially is id like to use the alarm on my phone, but im too hesitant incase phone freezes & it doesnt go off.
Time to give it an overnight charge from the PC and other tests

The next step then is to restore the phone to an 'as new' state in terms of software/ROM/Radio/spl etc (unless others with the same setup can verify this problem never happens for them) and charge it for the normal period solely via USB from a PC. You mentioned you don't normally recharge the phone this way for long periods but try it for a night or two just to see if this makes a difference. It would also help to rule out power fluctuations as a contributing factor if you could power the PC via a UPS. As this has happened now with 2 phones and 2 mains adapters, its extremely unlikely to be a hardware fault and more likely something associated with the configuration or your neigbourhood power supply. If it locks up most nights, take a note of the time displayed on the phone when that happens - is it the same time on each occasion?
What happens if you leave it on charge while in flight mode with all 'options' such as wifi, bluetooth etc turned off (just for diagnostic purposes)? If you can get it to charge properly without locking up in a basic state, then if you reintroduce any differences one by one and test after each change, you'll find the culprit.

USB Tethering Help

I am trying to setup USB tethering on my phone. Instead of bringing the old threads back from the dead I just linked them below.
First lets get the obvious stuff out of the way.
1. I do use wifi tether, but if I want a file to download all night this isn't a good solution, battery goes dead after about an hour hooked up to the wall charger.
2.PDAnet - this works well if you have time to constantly monitor the connection or for casual surfing on a dead or close to dead battery, it randomly drops and doesn't reconnect on its own.
3. AziLink - The OpenVPN thing ruins this option, to big of a pain in the butt. Having to install an run in a VMAppliance.
I have looked at the other 2 options for USB tether. -
The Race condition between Mobile Network Connection and Mobile Network sharing here I just can't seem to "beat the clock" the network always connects first and gives me error 67. I was thinking this may have been patched since the thread is old, pre-update.
And this other one no one can seem to get to work.
So what I want to know - Does any one actually have a working USB tether option? I more or less want to be able to hook my phone up start a download and walk away with out having to worry too much about the connection droping (like pdanet).
I find that charging via usb doesn't heat up the battery as much, and it lasts longer.
but this is relevant to my interests

This thread makes me really very thankful for my 40 dollar a month roadrunner high speed. 2 mbps and I don't have to worry about anything.
Ps I am not an employee of time warner cable nor am I receiving any compensation for this post
AT&T has great DSL, for low prices available in most areas.
P.S.:
DirecTV and AT&T are in no way business partners, and I do not get compensated if I convince you to sign up for their services...
Even though I'm supposed to...
****ing payroll.
I cant get anything except the "race" one to work. I have gotten it to work with every ROM ive tried as well. Usually takes a few tries and you eventually get the feel for the timing.
Very difficult to explain the timing . My internet went down one night and i did it desperately for god knows how long until i figured it out. I guess it takes a serious catastrophe like network outage for 10+ hours to make you desperate enough to fail, repeat, fail, repeat...
I figured out if you hit it to soon, it doesn't work, and if you hit it too late it doesn't work.

I don't get either of these services up where I live, and I absolutly refuse to deal with Comcast. USB Tether has always been my primary access point until WiFi tether which is just not near as helpful since my battery goes dead so quickly with it.
I got the race condition to catch one time last night in an hour and a half of trying, but when it did work my computer wouldn't actually show a network connection.
Just to make sure, when I turn on MNS it shows up as "HTC RNDIS Driver". Is that what everyone else is getting?

That's because USB charges at 500 mA, half of the wall charger's current.
When using WiFi tethering, USB charging cannot keep up with the current draw, and the battery will be completely dead in an hour or two. I've taken to plugging the phone in the wall charger, turning off the screen, removing the back cover, and placing the phone face down while doing WiFi tethering. This keeps the battery from overheating.
I can go all day with wifi tether via usb charging. I download a lot too

Really? I definitely can't. Lucky you
If I connect to wifi tether and let the torrents go, plugged into the wall I am lucky to get a little over an hour. Plugged in USB isn't a whole lot different if I start with a full battery. Just browsing the web I can go a few hours.

my computer has a metal case, and I use it as a heat sink.

[Q] G1 turns off by itself 6 times a day - I can turn it on ONLY when pluge to charge

My phone turns off by itself when it is charged ! 5-6 times a day, maybe even more
I can't turn it on after this. !!!
After this I can turn it back ON only I connect it to the USB cable !!!
(it dose not need time to charge, just to be connected to charger or USB. After this it may work for 2 hours and just go off again)
I searched the forum, and not only, but had not find any posts with the same problem
This phone is my "life" - I can't go to T-mobile or smthing, don't live in USA ... so relay don't know what to do... I will be glad if you give me some tips
P.S. the phone is not rooted or smthing, I even tried to delete all apps I installed to see if this will help.
Your battery is probably jacked up. Buy a new one. Then after that root that G1 and put CyanogenMod 5 or CyanogenMod 6
For sure your battery. There is a post on this same q&a section about this same issue.
sent from my superfroyo dream
I was thinking about the same thing, but:
I need to plug it in only to power up (I don't leave it a second for charging - it is all ready 80% or more or less dose not matter) - the battery is holding the charge, and the discharge rate is at a normal speed
The problem is that: it shuts down from time to time - and when this happens I need to plug it in order to turn it back on
If I turn it off myself - I will be able to power it up with no problem
I had the same problem until I actually took a look at my battery and saw how swollen/warped it had become. Take a look at yours and if your battery seems the least bit swollen, its time for a new one. I ordered mine today.
K thanks for your help going to look on ebay for a new battery...
Any tips on what to look for? I see some with 1400mha and even 2400 (but they are too bing for me - have to think about it)
I just picked up a standard battery off eBay for like $5 since I plan on switching phones this December but I saw phones with double the life for like $10

Really Odd Issue

Alright, I noticed about 3-4 days ago that I was waking up in the morning to almost no charge gained on my phone. I figured my computer turned off or something and my phone just didn't get charged via the USB port. I've now realized that when using specific USB cords (Only one out of 5 that I have works without this issue at the moment), my phone charges for about 5 minutes and then goes into this weird mode where it displays the clock time as a screensaver sort of screen and it stops charging my phone WHILE being plugged in.
As soon as I unlock my phone, I see a steering wheel icon at the top left in my notifications that says my phone is in car mode. Before I can pull down to see what it is or go into the menu settings to see if I can disable it, it turns off and disables again. I went through my ROM toolbox and found no signs of "Car" or "Car Mode" applications installed since I remember seeing "Car" in most rom installations.
It's becoming very frustrating because most times, I plug in my USB cord and my phone begins to charge and then 2-3 minutes later it just stops and goes into that mode. Sometimes it's instant and sometimes it won't work at all. I don't think it's an internal phone problem though because I have a cheap USB cord I found in my closet that is flawless and doesn't bring me this issue.
What could this be? Is my HTC One on it's last legs or what? I don't have my upgrade for another year so I'm really hoping this isn't too serious. The USB cords I do own are in great condition and wouldn't all suddenly stop working at once, so I see no reason to blame those. If anyone is wondering, I'm using CyanogenMod 11 right now, but this is a fresh installation and previously was using a very stable ARHD 6.1 GPe ROM. I also don't think the rom's I'm using have anything to do with it.
I don't know much about this stuff so I'll just leave some other information if it's needed. I have the SuperCID thing done, my phone is rooted and my bootloader is unlocked obviously along with having S-Off. I'm also using TWRP's latest version.
Any help would be really, really appreciated...
Also, to add onto what I said about the screensaver/car mode:
When I unlock my phone while being plugged in and the car mode turns off, my phone doesn't go back to charging unless I un-plug the USB cord and re-plug it in. This is when it usually begins to stop charging seconds after putting it in.

It may be a kernel problem, try a different ROM.
Also try cleaning the USB port with compressed air.

I've been researching it and found a few similar issues and apparently there's no fixes for it. I'm more or less stuck with this for another year until my upgrade. There's a small fix for it but it's a pain in butt to remember:
I have to turn my HTC One off, plug it into the USB for charging and then turn it on and it'll charge correctly.
I've also noticed a major decline in battery life as well. I went from 78% to 71% in 10 minutes a bit ago. Really disappointing seeing as how I've already done so much to this phone I probably couldn't even sell it let alone have a conversation with HTC about it since I've killed any kind of warranty for it so badly.
Damn damn damn damn damn.

Well, if u still got warrany and the phone is working, u can still claim warranty by going back to full stock.

I've had the phone for over a year and I don't have warranty. Would there be a manufacturer warranty for this?
I guess this issue isn't fixable and I'm just screwed. Any suggestions how I could get a new phone without an upgrade for a good deal or something? God damn it.
