Hello everyone!
I've brought my Wings back to the store, trying to get my money back to buy an N95(I want internal GPS!), my excuse was the memory leak, which rendered my phone useless.
Anyway, I've got it back today, the guy in the store said that all the internals had been replaced. I noticed the free memory I have is 176xx kB, which is more than I had before, if I'm correct? I haven't installed anything except route 66. I've tried to get the memory leak, I've started IE, mediaplayer and route 66 and closed it, I managed to get to 15xxx kB, but not lower.
How can I trigger the memory leak?

MB, not KB not kB.
How much RAM do you want free? Is it causing an issue, or are you simply dissatisfied with the amount of free RAM you have?
He's trying to use the memory leak as an excuse to exchange his phone through the store, however the store did something to it which seem's (in his case) to have solved his memory issues and now cannot recreate the problems to warrant the exchange.

15xxx is kB. the x stands for another number, which I didn't remember exactly.
k stands for kilo, kiloByte, so that's correct.

That's about right, but this might mean that there IS a solution, so you guys could ask for a repair, and use your phone at its full potential!
If I could trigger the memory leak, that would be "good" for me, but if I can't, that means that it's fixed, so that would be very good for you guys, so if you know how to trigger it(preferably a step by step guide, like which programs you use, and if you browse, which site etc)
I often get memory leak by picking 2M photo, then go to album and zoom it to Actual size. It only works right after soft reset.
I guess it's not fixed then. Now I've only got 89xx kB of free memory left with all the applications closed. If I run media player and go to camera, media player closes on its own.
Damn, if this phone hadn't had this issue, and the gps was not removed, I would love it!
Is the memory leak fixed in the 6.1 ROM posted here?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=383617
In my experience, all mobile phones, PDA-phones smartphones suffer memory leak to varying degrees. The more powerful, the more leaks. It is an OS problem and both Symbian and WM suffer it. That is why they all require you to reboot them from time to time. I have used many Nokias and seen the problem.

Since the 'Report Real Problems' thread about Faria's AKU 3.2 ROM has just about stopped making any sense I thought I would start a new one specifically regarding this memory 'leak' issue.
I have a G3 QTEK 9100, I have installed Faria's 8MB AKU 3.2 ROM. I initially had the wake-up issues but I think I have worked around these. The issue I am seeing is the Program Memory gradually decreasing. After a soft-reset the phone shows about 19MB of free Program Memory. Without doing anything other than answer phone calls it will decrease to about 12MB after a day. After 2-days it goes to about 8Mb and now the 3rd day (in the morning) it tells me 7.4MB.
I am not loading any applications what so ever, just answering the phone. It is sat in a cradle connected via USB to my PC so all it is running is ActiveSync. I have two applications installed - TomTom 6 and MS PocketStreets 2006, neither of which have been started since it was soft reset 3-days ago.
Can anyone explain this memory leakage
Oh, there we go again - 7.3MB
Thanks
Andy
Hi,
I basically have the same problems as described above. Using a G3 HTC Wizard with the 12mb Rom RC1. It goes down constantly and even if I use the Free_ram application it doesnt manage to free it all again. Apart from that I am still experiencing a severe Battery drainage. I have done a few tests and I am guessing this has to do with the Radio Rom. As soon as I make a call for lets say 2 Minutes the battery droppes aprox 2%. Since I use push-email and am always online with GPRS this means a huge drainage over the day. I will run a few more tests and disable push email and try not to make any calls and see if this still occurs.
Good, sort of, at least it's not just me......
It is now 13:20 UK time and if I am to believe it, it reckons now only 5.9MB of program memory is free. It is now showing signs of slowing down, refreshing the screen is taking time, going to Start Settings and then hitting the close 'X' is now pausing
I am going to restrain myself from soft-resetting it until it comes to some sort of conculsion...........
Andy
I think I am going to have to soft reset it now, its getting just too unresponsive
Storage
Total: 47.46MB
In Use: 13.64MB
Free: 33.83MB
Program
Total: 44.01MB
In Use: 39.40MB
Free: 4.61MB
I have made 2 calls and received 2 since I last posted and I am now down to 4.6MB.
Does anyone think a re-flash or a hard-reset is likely to fix anything? As I said I only have TomTom6 and MS Pocket Streets 2006 installed in addition to the stuff included with the extended ROM from Faria?
Thanks
Andy
My wizard rebooted itself yesterday morning and so it has been running for about 36 hours. I have 12.8 Mb program memory and it rarely gets below 11Mb. When I first installed Faria's ROM I used the 12 Mb version. I thought that I might be seeing a memory leak because I did get down to as low on RAM as you are now seeing and so I installed the 8 Mb version and tracked it for a few days. It has never been as bad as what you are seeing since I installed the 8 Mb version although I don't think whether you use the 8 or 12 Mb version makes any difference. Perhaps a hard reset will help or maybe you will just end up reinstalling all your apps.

Just a few other things:
I take 5 to 20 calls a day and run Pocketweather and might also jump out on the web using Netfront
I have just hard-reset the device and re-installed TomTom6, Pocket Streets 2006 & Voice Command 1.6. Our CA Admin guy is going to moan at me again for re-requesting a Certificate Ah well......
I'll see how this goes......

how is it after hard reset?
My G4 with 12MB ROM is ok
... run TomTom6, Exchange push email, Today agenda plug-in, bluetooth handsfree and make/take 20+ calls a day
It never seems to go below 10MB
I will see if I can 'make' it.

I was working away today and I had to soft-reset the Wizard about 9:00 this morning as the phone just couldn't get a signal. I have used TomTom & made and received several phone calls and it is now telling me I have 13.2MB program memory free (ActiveSync is loaded)
So it is still behaving as before.....
I think I might install the 12MB version and see if this does the same thing - I assume it will? Failing that I think the RISidoro 2.6 ROM is going to have to go back on I really don't want to do this as I like the speed of this ROM (obviously not when the memory drains away and its as slow as a dog though..) and the newer features of AKU 3.2.

Pencilcase - do you have the Wizard connected to a PC for long periods? I am trying to see whether it might just be the fact that it is connected to my PC for the majority of the time - sat in a cradle with ActiveSync running continuously.
Do many people leave their Wizard connected to a PC (with ActiveSync running) for most of the day?

Hi Faria - do you know if the ActiveSync version included in your AKU 3.2 ROM has this issue?
I am getting the feeling this might be the case...
ActiveSync on my PC is version 4.2 but I assume this won't affect the memory leak on the Wizard?

I have not connected the Wizard to my PC for a day and guess what? the free program memory has stayed constant at around 9.3MB.....
Can anyone else confirm leaving your Wizard connected to a PC with ActiveSync running causes the free program memory to gradually decrease?
I am running Faria's AKU 3.2 8MB ROM and English ActiveSync 4.2 on my PC.
Thanks

I love that ROM but unfortuntely the memory leak is severe for me - just want to know how many people are experiencing that issue??
How much free RAM do u have after a soft reset and how much after running for 1 day?
I have around 17MB after reset (with not much more than the built in apps - just GPRS Monitor and SIMName running additionally) but that drops to less than 10MB within a day or even a few hours of usage!!
17MB free after soft reset; down to about 12MB after a day.
No good for me, with Voice Command and emoze taking over 3MB. My minimum target is 15MB free and stable with both of those loaded, so for the moment I've switched back to a previous Molski ROM.
just made a test: if I leave my Wizard powered on (prevent standby) the RAM drops around 3MB per hour without even touching the device...
[EDIT] have to correct it - running for 1h now and it went down from 17 to 12MB - so 5MB per h... [/EDIT]
new finding: if I take out my miniSD card I get another 4-5MB!! now I have 22 after soft reset - will see whether it still drops so fast...
I remember to have read something about storage cards taking up RAM but forgot what - does it depend on the card/the formatting options etc.??
However, it still doesn't solve the leaking problem... :-(

I believe so... we should be waiting for an expert s advice before deleting any reg keys or reformat our SD cards...
Odd, I have no mem issues at all
with everything in the rom, plus voice command 1.6 and remote display, I have 15 meg free. And it stays that way. Have not reset my phone in two days. Cingular 8125 G4 device. And yes, I have an SD card as well.
i would say that its stable with me too, dont have that much running, i dont know some of them like elatepushservice, sapsettings, but with 19 processes in task manager, stay around 14 mbs mostly, it seems to drop low sometime with browsing texting but goes back to 14 or more... i might be wrong here but could it be the installation procedure, i followed dr p method, then added molskis 3.0 then the 3.3... i am still figuring out stuff, mostly a reader than a poster...
I woke up this morning w/ only 2MB!
I have a G3 8125 and here's my install:
3.3 v1 installed on top of the Cingular 2.25.11 IPL/SPL
Upgraded TodayAgenda to v0.9.22 using the install, uninstall, re-install method
Upgraded to BatteryStatusExt.1.04.beta2
Installed DaylightSavings.cab
Usage:
Yesterday, my friend accidentally ran the UK_Jersey_Telecom auto-config
I was trying to set up MMS for Fido (still doesn't work but I no longer receive error messages either)
Voice Dialing
Other Symptoms:
I've also noticed that my date keeps on going haywire. keeps on going 18h 20mins ahead.
I have verified that no other programs are running in the background but on occasion when I check, I see ActiveSync (I use ActiveSync 4.2).
Might try V2 on Tmobile 2.26 when I get the time and see how goes.

Just upgraded to V2 (6MB ver) and memory availability seems a lot better. Running for two days and only lost 5MB (which is much better than losing 15MB in 12hrs). The combination of embedded TodayAgenda upgraded to 9.22 may have been the culprit. I currently have V2 with 9.22 installed and it seems quite stable.
The current memory loss seems to be caused by certain programs/functions not releasing memory when closed/disabled. I still notice ActiveSync running in the background out of the blue. I was just playing with wifi and noted a 1.5mb drop in memory when enabling but it does not return after disabling. I will update this post as I see more possible causes.
For those who installed SPB PocketPlus: for me most probably SPB PocketPlus caused a leak - I just found out with the WM6 ROM, so might be the same with AKU3.3! I also had a leak with WM6 before (although not as serious as on AKU3.3) and now with the same config as before except PocketPlus I don't experience it anymore!!
Regarding the large mount of RAM taken by the storage card (I know it's not a leak, but anyways): this did the trick on WM6 (before took 4MB, now 0.2MB), so might be the same on AKU3.3:
change the FATFS cache size back to 0 (most tweaks change that, but anyway I didn't realize a slow down of the device after changing it back to that factory default):
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\StorageManager\FATFS]
"CacheSize"=dword:00000000

I noticed a huge memory leak in TodayAgenda running:
a) 3.3 beta ROM with embedded 0.9.20
b) 3.3 beta ROM with upgrade to 0.9.22
c) WM6 beta (both the clean version and pdaviet) with 0.9.22
So if you're not seeing a memory leak, my guess is that the memory leak is depending on a specific configuration option inside TodayAgenda.
I think I have a reverse memory leak....lol mine went from @ start 3.34 to 20.57 MB after 1-2 hrs....
Seriously though, just wanted to chime in and say I don't have any issues....before this ROM I was running Crossbow for a little bit and before that I was using a custom home brew...

Simbsoft Volleyball
vijay555 VJSlippyPalm
PalmThreadedSMS
Resco Registry Add-in
Resco FTP Add-in
Ilium Software eWallet
Dr.Shultz Smart Dial+Eten skin RUS
TomTom Navigator 6

Oops... skipped a thought there.. I meant to say V2 with 9.22 installed. There's still some leak but I wouldn't blame it completely on TodayAgenda yet. The leak is lower now and less significant with extra ram being available in V2. I find certain programs/functions not releasing RAM when closed/disabled to be a bigger issue (ie. enabling then disabling Wifi, voice dialing etc)
@lvlolvlo: That sounds about right. Even though it appears as if the phone is done loading, there are still some processes running in the background. Wait a few minutes for the processes to release the ram and you'll see a big jump.

Where can I find this cab? Is it designed for TodayAgenda? I tried doing a search and skimmed through some threads from the last couple of months and didn't see anything. From what I have read, most people are pointing at ActiveSync (I am running 4.5 Beta at home) or TodayAgenda.
On avg, I need to reset my phone every 5 days or so. While this is not a huge issue, I'm curious as to what may be causing it.
What you guys can also try doing is getting SK Tools and using the free up ram feature on there. i have that on my phone even thou i hover around 20 mbs with wisbar, ilauncher, and pocket breeze on there and also rltoday. It'll get me back like 3 mbs when i do that. but i think it would really help you guys.
What confused me is as following:
In the setting\system\device information\hardware tab(tranlated from chinese), it show up the RAM size is 256MB and the Flash ROM size is 512MB, and the storage memory is 279.09MB.
in the setting\system\memory\main memory tab, it show up there are 279.09MB storage memory(ROM) totally and 183.60 MB program memory(RAM) totally.
Why this will happened? The ROM of the Rhodium consume 232.91MB Flash ROM(512-279.09=232.91)? Is it so big? And how about the RAM?
Is there any chance for me to upgrade the ROM and RAM to bigger size in some kind of phone repair shop?

I like to put everything into the phone bringing with me everywhere, including all kind of software and all kind of materials, photo, music, e-book, home video etc.
if the ROM and RAM are not big enough, I will always be worried about them when install software or copy materials. Even it still does not run out off memory, but I do worry about it all the time.
although it can be expanded by TF card, however, many software can't run on TF card and the read/write speed of the TF card is slower than the main memory.
If the main memory is big enough, I can install all of the software into main memory and copy all of the materials into TF card. At that condition, I can easily change TF card to get anymore new contents.
My last device is O2 flame, I do feel comfortable with its big Flash ROM but its RAM still too small and also many other shortcoming.
I ever think of N97 for the built in 32G memory, however, I am used to WM system.
I ever think of samsung i908 for the built in 8G memory, however there is several week points in its specification.
I do not understand why HTC build in so small memory in such a highend model while its competitor, such as Apple,Nokia,Sumsung, are goint toward another way.
get a 8GB memory card, should be enough, and install everything in your memory card. That's what I do, and everything is fine.
Be sure, tho, to install important programs, like drivers, softwares like skins, etc to your device, since the memory card initializes late on boot.
All in all, you should not have any problems even tough the rom is huge. mine is still fast and fancy since day 1, and I have my 8GB nearly full of s***.

I got a 8GB TF card too and it's now in my device.
However, I have to install some software into the card. Then when I change another card for multi-media contents, those software become unuseable. This is not comfortable for using experience.
What I can't understand is why not built in more memory for user's convenience since it's known the ROM and OS occupied so much memory.

perhaps you could have the programs installed into the same directory on different SD cards so when swapping them for Media purposes you do not break the program.

I know that I am not the ONLY one to have a problem with an incredibly PAINFULLY slow Tilt. It is a surprise im not finding WAY more posts on this forum about it.
Lets cover the basics first:
Stock 6.1 Rom
Stock Radio
LOADS of programs
All Kaiser Tweaks performed
Tom Tom Navi 7....Full USA and Canada on SD Card
18.12 Meg free storage and 50.39 Meg free program memory (At the time of this post)
Lets cover the issues next:
HOLYYYY SLOW.....click on "messaging" and 20 seconds later it would come up.
SLOWWWW Texting.... Start typing and 10 seconds after finishing typing the screen would catch up.
SLOWWWW deleting messages.... it would take about 5 minutes to delete a batch of 10 text messages with just "Hi" written in them.
SLOWWWWW Tom Tom...I know some of this is related to the "Class action issue" but it was never THISSS slow. Only got really slow after I installed USA CANADA on SD card.
FIX????:
Sitting at work here, I was bored. I decided to pop out my SD card (PNY SDHC 4GB). On the SD card I have: Tom Tom (Map only), ScummVM, DCIM (Cam Pics), Doom, Quake.... Nothing system related.
As soon as I removed the card....BAM...EVERYTHING IS FAST.
Like mega fast.... no lag on the keys with texts....deletes texts fast...system menus are fast....programs load instantly...."control panel" loads instantly. Even GPSTEST gets a fix almost immediately!!!!
So whats the fix?? 98% of us use SD cards. and the other 2% would not be looking at this post because they dont have the speed issues.
Is it the SDHC?? I know that causes problems with alot of other devices (Wii, Digi Camera for example). maybe fragmented card???? maybe crappy card????
Does anyone else concur with this find???
Im pretty sure I didnt overlook this post somewhere else....so dont flame if I did!
Tom
Sounds like it's time to try a new card. Mine would be slow, sometimes stop responding. A new storage card and all was well. The old card works fine in my card reader on my desktop, just not the tilt.

Tom

Sounds like you have manila on your phone with lots of mp3s on the sd card.
In Testing
Still working with it. Bought a Kingston SDHC 8 gb card from newegg. I will try that tonight probably!

No Manila..... tho there are alot of MPEG type files on the card.... haha ;-)
So did we conclude that the microsd card was the problem? I got the same issues but I was thinking of reformatting the card instead of replacing it.

Hey ragutom,
What is going on?
Please, I'm so eager to hear from you.
n.
i appologize....i have not been able to try it yet....very busy week....As I am sitting here typing this tho....the cursor is barely keeping up.
i will let you all know soon though.
tom
If that didn't fix it, try removing all of the mp3's from it.
I took my card out and its still slow. Will a build up of text messages cause the phone to go slow?
Usually when U dont clear out alot of your sent, text or inbox stuff it build up & slows down the Tilt also. And cleaning up those cookies (if any) might work as well.
I've had these issues before.
It's because there isn't much room n the SD card. I had movies on my card for a while with just a little room left... removed them and wallah!!! fast-o change-o.
8 gig card? i thought the kaiser only supported up to a 2gig sd card.
UPDATE!!!!
ok
so its been a while since I posted..... I have been checking the posts as they come in....but havent been replying (sorry! reallly busy)
Everyone seems to have good points and ideas.
Obviously there may be many solutions to this problem..
I did finally get the 8 gig kingston card in.... moved everything off the old card...onto my comp...then back on the new card. everything is faster now.
I dont think it was entirely the card though......
Message management sped up entirely after i deleted the 500+ emails (some with large attachments) that i didnt realize were being saved in the deleted folder! (I usually keep my text folder clean)
Tom Tom sped up after i hid the USA CANADA map from the program and downloaded my "one free local map". Now I use the local map for MOST things....and the VERY SLOW USA CANADA map for trips out of the area (not common) ((((If anyone has any suggestions for this let me know)))) to give an example....I put it on demo mode with the USA CANADA and it took 10 minutes to go 1 mile in 100% mode.....local takes only a minute for the same stretch.
Picture taking still sucks. Although I have WAY more free space....
Typing in messages sped up to..... probably cuz of deleting messages too.....
hopefully this answers some questions......its not the end all solution that I was thinking tho.....
But to answer one question fully...... the Tilt does support 8 gig cards and SDHC compliance

No, supports up to 32 gb sdhc. I'm using a 16 gb one
I have installed new ROM (Thanks a million shifu) and the result is powerful little gadget. Works great, no slowing down. Just one small problem with hardware keyboard and wrong Fn signs.
Hope it helps.

You just need the Tilt Keyboard Fix to correct the FN keys.
mrdiavolo, thanks, did it, didn't help.
My phone is TytnII not Tilt, and the cab helps when you are flashing a non AT&T ROM onto the Tilt.
Thanks anyway.

Take a read of shifu first page it's in red
Just wanted to do a poll for everyone using Bell's I9000M in regards to failing Internal SD cards. Hopefully this gives us a little insight into this widespread issue.
Please vote ONLY if you have a Bell I9000M Galaxy S Vibrant
i agree, it does seems the i9000m have some Internal SD problem that is only related to this model.
still waiting for the poll

Up and running. I'm gunna see if we can get this thread stuck to the page for a while too.
once we are done with this poll, it will be interesting to compare it to the same poll for the i9000 model and the USA models as well
I'd like to know too if the users that had their Internal SD fail were heavy users of the phone (i.e. had 9GB of music on it and numerous apps.). I'm not an extreme user (i.e. don't put a crap load of stuff on it) and I was wondering if that's why mine is okay.

I did not have a lagfix, but I did have the card nearly full. Not a lot of apps. But a pile of music which I listened to fairly regularly.
No issues for me with my Bell Galaxy S regarding internal SD mem.
No lag fix with JH2
7.5 gigabytes free on mine, but I haven't had SD failure yet. It freezes every once in a while but it seems most people relate that to no signal, although it just froze on me today after sending a text message, ie. I had a signal.

When did you get the phone? What were the last 8 digits of your phones serial number (top number listed on your box)? I wonder if it's an issue with early phones.

Serial number is still the same since repairs so I'm not posting it. But the battery manufacture date is august 12th. The bell store received the phone on august 24th.

Haven't had any issues with the internal SD on mine. Have an extra 16gb card in for media. My phone will crash when I'm in a couple areas at work that have spotty 3g and/or wifi. Never had it happen while at home.
Poll is now a sticky at Electroz's request. Hopefully this will generate some insight that will help get to the bottom of all this mess. (the other messes are on their own for now lol)
I replied in another post. I think it is highly likely a bad batch of SD card went into the i9000m production if numbers are higher than the other variants.

that could be another possibility.
anyways, just to chime in to what people wanted to know.
Internal SD full of apps, 400+ consuming about 1000 MB (super heavy user, keep changing programs very often as i keep testing out new Apps i find online)
mostly taken up by the GPS off line maps
is not even enough space to load the entire NAM maps, i had to chop it down to the most states i visit the most
my music mp3 and videos are on my external 16 GB full 100 MB free
Mine is bricked... was running 2.1 with firmware... keep your receipts people as you have a 60day DOA policy with these phones... after that, it's a lengthy process to send it back to Samsung direct via your carrier for replacement.
correction 30days return policy ... unfortunatly
well mine had that exact brick, internal SD will not mount. U would say im a failty heavy user with lots of mp3s on the phone and many apps. Ive sent mine in last monday, and speaking to another member i should get it sometime this week if all goes well. Ill report back when I get it.
The error is very bad because nothing on the phone works properly with this Error, it boots and runs fine it seems, but apps done function at all. My phone was stock with 2.1 (non working 3 button reset version)
Mine still works, but I'm not an extremely heavy user of the SD card.
What happens exactly? Is it just that the thing won't mount? Or is there another issue?
I'd like to test it out. Should I just put very large files on it until I max it out? What should I do after that?
And finally, does a factory reset bring it back to life?
P.S. Just checked my battery -- manufacturers date is July 25th, 2010.
This is a very interesting Poll!
On #project-voodoo IRC I helped a user who had issues with his SDcard on a Bell I9000M
Turns out that his internal SD MoviNAND chip was dead!
The system automatically used his external SD as a backup for /data, as the "mmcblk1" device become "mmcblk0".
The internal SD was so dead that the Linux Kernel didn't detected any existence of it anymore.
The symptom that the phone was working (using the external SD) but he couldn't mount his SD card anywhere.
Eventually he had a replacement from Bell in a few days.
What killed the sdcard ? An old Ext2 lagfix when creating the giant 1GB+ loop files.
But it wasn't the lagfix fault. It just acted as accelerator.

that's the most important thing people have to understand
the lag fix is not what really kills the internal SD, it just kills it faster, as in the hardware already had some issues, so it just put it out of its misery faster
better sooner than later, at least this way you can claim the warranty before it expires (1 year if i recall)

What i mean is that the memory chip was defective from the beginning.
Copying bunch of data to the vfat partition from a computer (music, videos..) would have done the same thing.
