I recently moved and am using someones wifi for a while. I have a laptop that connects fine to it but I am wanting to take it one step further. (Please see image for what I want to do.)Thanks for your time..
In general I just want to receive wifi on my laptop and output that with an ethernet cable to a router that will then supply internet to my 360 and htpc. I have tried both Bridge and ICS and neither have worked. Is this possible?
I don't think you can output wifi from a laptop to just any router. I don't even think you can do that. Best bet would be to buy an wi-fi adapter and router
you need a ethernet crossover cable from your laptop to router(you need it) and just follow this how to, just replace the ps2 with a router
http://www.i-hacked.com/content/view/118/62/
Ya I have tried almost everything but using a crossover cable. Thanks for the reply and your time..
One more question, would i need to disable dhcp on my router and assign the ip manually? Just wondering while im at work because I cant mess with it till tonight.

im not sure, im a noob at network things, but just try it with dhcp and if no go then change it. after that, nothing happens, just come back here maybe someone else can help
My bad I'm a noob. I forgot you can use it as an internet bridge.
i wonder how did it go?
ps. if you cant find a crossover cable just make one. you can just cut a regular ethernet cable and cross the wires
just search for it to see witch ones need to be crossed

1 & 2 (Pair One) and 3 and 6 (Pair Two)
Basically if it is Orange-White, Orange, Green-White, Blue, Blue-White, Green, Brown-White, Brown. On one end the other end needs to be Green-White, Green, Orange-White, Blue, Blue-White, Orange, Brown-White, Brown. Or Vice versa.
Is likely that the problem is the address used (or assygned) from the router.
when you are using the M$ ICS the PC that shares the connection MUST have the 192.168.0.1 address (and not any other address).
So if this is the address already used from the wiwfi router you can't easily share your connection.
So config the router on another address (eg: 10.0.0.1) and then share your connection with the XP machine as usually.
Well for a little update I ended up buying a crossover cable and successfully can connect one device through my laptop. i ended up bridging the connection and its working great. Unfortunately I am still unable to feed internet to the router. I am happy with just connecting one thing at a time but will work on getting the router fixed this weekend. Thanks for all the help guys and ill update if i get the router working.

Solutor,
Thanks I will give that a try this weekend, I have 3 PCs and a 360 so I def. want to get the router working. I tried a different subnet on my router a while ago and that didnt work but then again I wasnt as far as I am now. Thanks again
Success!!!
Ok guys here it is:
My laptop was receiving the ip 192.168.200.252 via dhcp from the neighbors wifi. My router(linksys wrt54g) on the other hand was set as default which is
Default Gateway 192.168.1.1
So all I had to do was change the linksys from Dynamic to static ip and add this info:
Internet I.P. Address: 192.168.200.251 (this field was already populated.)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 (Also already populated.)
Gateway: 192.168.200.1 (Neighbors wifi Router i.p.)
Static DNS: 192.168.200.1 (Use Neighbors DNS settings?)
Thats It. Thanks again for everyones help and hopefully this can help people with this problem down the road

Hi, I have a Tilt and do not have a problem tethering to a single computer. What I would like to do is share with all four computers in my home. I have tried bridging the sharing connection to my lan connection and have gotten dhcp on the Tilt to assign addresses to all computers on the network, but they still can't ping each other (other than the tilt and the computer its directly tethered to. I have turned off all firewalls and still nothing. Rebooted everything. Still nothing. Is it possible to do this? Thanks for any help.
There's a program around here somewhere that allows you to make your TILT a wireless router. If you do this, any machine with wi-fi can connect to the SSID and go.
Anyone have the link handy?
Wireless Router
Could I have it connect with my current wireless router to provide internet to my wired network through the rj45 ports on the router ? 3 of the 4 computers are on a wired lan. You see, we just got HSDPA on Monday and I love it. I got a bit ahead of myself and cancelled my home DSL connection. Now I'm realizing that I am stuck with only having one computer on the internet at a time. This has got to be possible. - I just found the thread on setting up as a wireless router. I will start playing with it. Any suggestions/instructions are appreciated.
OK, get connected to your carrier whilst tethered.
Then from any Explorer window on your tethered PC, select, 'Set up a home or small Office Network'.
Select the first option in the following box 'This computer directly connects...' and follow it through.
This should set up your Activesync PC as an IP address of 192.168.1.1. (an access point IP)
If you connect any other PC/laptop to this PC via wireless or LAN (you do know how to do that I hope??) to this computer, it will share the internet connection..
Remember, this will change any prior Internet configuration you have on the PC/Laptop!
Hope this helps.
Internet sharing
Thanks for the suggestion. I am going to try that again. The first time I tried that I found out that the Tilt had already assigned itself the address of 192.168.0.1 . On the XP machine, the computer will always use that same address to share its connection, so it immediately complained that another computer on the network is already using the required address for internet connection sharing. Maybe all I need to do is force the Tilt to use a different ip address like 192.168.0.10? I am not sure how to do that since this is my first time using Windows Mobile as part of a network sharing its connection. The only reference I could find to 192.168.0.1 in the registry was HKLM\Comm\BTPAN1\Parms\TcpIp. Should I change that?

NO, 192.168.0.1 or 2.1 or.3.1 are all access point AD's.
You have to go into your PC/laptop Network Places icon to tel IT to then share the connection.
I am sorry, but if you have never shared an internet connection on your PC before (ie via modem or ADSL), you will not really understand how it is done.
Access points
Thanks for your reply. The problem is that we are trying to make the pc an access point and trying to make the tilt an access point at the same time. They both are using 192.168.0.1 as the default ip address and as far as I tell there is not a way given to change that. The Tilt automatically uses 192.168.0.1 and when you using the sharing wizard on the pc it also uses the same address for its network card thats connected to the home wired network. Unfortunately for me, two devices on a network cannot have the same ip address. There must be a way...

OK, set all computers on the network to fixed IP's of 192.168.0.xxx in Internet protocol (under TCPIP on network)with the same subnet mask with a default gateway matching your device! Try that...
sharing
That was my first attempt at a work around. The problem is that there are
actually two network connections to the pc. One for the Tilt (usb) and one for the LAN (nic card). They don't seem to see each other even when they have matching ip addresses and subnets. Thats why I tried right clicking them and selecting "bridge these connections." It seems that internet sharing "requires" DHCP to be used. I tried setting all the computers to use DHCP and actually had the Tilt assigning ip addresses to all of the computers on the network by bridging the two connections and using dhcp. Oddly, though, the computers on the network could not ping the Tilt. I think its because bridging uses the data link layer of the osi networking model?
There must be a hack to change the ip address that windows uses for the sharing access point. Alternatively, it would be nice if there were a device out there that could act as a hub to network usb and 100baseT devices together. In other words, plugging usb and cat5 cable rj45 plugs into the same box and having them all be on the same network.
OK, I have asked smitty to get on this but both of us are WAYYYYy past our bedtimes.
He should get back to you tomoz on this. (he's the Network buff..)
Hope it works out..

I can't make this work. I don't have WiFi on all of my computers. I was hoping to use WMWifiRouter to connect to my wireless router and then to my whole wired network. Is there a way to make the Tilt wireless router to connect with another wireless router? I'm thinking what I will do is go back to an AT&T rom and use "wireles modem" instead of "internet sharing". That way I can share the modem with the whole network. There doesn't seem to be a good way to use the Tilt internet sharing with the whole network. What do you guys think?
Deleted.....
For any future readers of this thread: I put the stock AT&T rom back on this phone and did a soft reset during the initial boot to stop the bloatware from loading. I went to start>settings>connections and tapped the wireless modem icon to open the app. I selected "usb" and tapped done then plugged the usb into my computer. My win xp computer found the new modem hardware and installed the HTC modem driver. I then setup a new dialup connection on my computer, and used the following to setup the login and dial:
username: [email protected]
password: cingular1
dial #: *99***1#
When I clicked on dial, it quickly connected to the AT&T network and I had internet access on my computer! I went to a speed test website and clocked my download speed at 1.2mbs and upload at 300kbs. I then opened "my network" and started the network setup wizard. I selected "this computer connects directly to the internet" and "file and printer sharing". To make a long story short, I am now able to share the Tilt's HSDPA internet connection with my whole network! I could not do it using the internet sharing function of the Tilt with either the AT&T rom or the kaiser rom. It would be awesome if someone more educated than me could make this function part of the HTC kaiser rom.

I have same problem. I agree with Nojnaworb, this is the reason why its not working.
I have no Wifi at home and have to use LAN for my home network (2 PC + 1 ppc).
Under WM5 it was easy to share Internetconnection with all Lan adapters.
I cannot believe there is no way.
PLS Networkexperts, tell me how to setup !!
Its really quite simple.
You dont connect all the computers to the tilt. You use ICS on the tilt to provide one pc with an internet connection.
You then share the internet connection from that pc to the other pc's using the networking wizard.
I think part of this persons problem was that he needed to bridge the 2 connections.
here have this.
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/wxpbrdge.html
You should be able to connect the Tilt, (let it use whatever address it wants) and then make a bridge from the tilt to your nic in the server. Then I beleive you just use internet connection sharing to disperse the lovely packets to the rest of the network. Without the bridge, there is no way to share from one network to another.
I'm pretty sure that you will need to set the address to 192.168.0.2 on the server or any other number were the 2 is. If your using a router then I would suggest turning off dhcp and not using the WAN port on it. Just treat the router like a switch/hub because it will just makes things even harder to figure out.
wish we had service that was worth sharing to my network.
Ok, well basically my end need is to have my Google Calendar synced to my phone on which I have no service or access to WiFi internet. I'm in Iraq right now, and the only internet I have is via Ethernet.
I am hoping to, at the least, sync my calender over USB. But one thing I'd love to do is share my internet connection to my phone via USB like WinMo does. That way I can mess with new roms and the such while I'm out here. Thing is, it can't have it's own IP address because all IP's are assigned and I have to log in via my browser on my computer once I'm connected. It's a pain in the ass.
But, any help would be great. Thanks!
I am pretty sure there is not a way to do what you are asking. Without wifi or and kind of data signal, there is no way to connect the gmail servers to your phone. I am pretty sure that usb is out of the question, which seems to be your only option.
Sorry my friend.
This might help, all you need is linux. You could virtualize it, but idk if you can do that where you are at right now.
any possibility of getting a usb wifi device and setting up Internet Connection Sharing so your phone would have a local ip like 192.168. and share the connection on your computer with your phone???
I don't know exactly how the IP shiz works with ICS, but the ISP out here uses 192.168 IP's. All I know is that the phone would need to not have an IP, or something along those lines, for it to work. IDFK....
If you're in iraq, it might be hard to get your hands on one of these, BUT, in the interests of completeness,
Use of a regular cheap broadband router with integrated wifi WILL do what you are looking to do...
You might need to clone your computer's MAC address to the router's WAN device, then it'll connect to the DHCP server, then using EITHER the computer OR the phone, go to the browser and authenticate.
Note: I don't think that there is really any way to network the phone to the computer using USB, though bluetooth IS an option... it'll be a console-only operation though.
Final option is to get your hands on a wifi device for the computer (can be a USB device) and run it as a NAT, i.e. use iptables.

They don't care what the MAC is, just IP's. I can get a WiFi router if I need to. But, if I turn off DHCP on the router, does it still need it's own IP address? Or does it just act as a switch? All IP configuration is done on the device, there is no DHCP ran by the ISP.

The cheap broadband router has TWO IP addresses. The public IP address assigned by the ISP's DHCP server (or manually if the ISP doesn't have DHCP), and the PRIVATE IP address used to communicate with the other devices that you hook up to it. It uses NETWORK ADDRESS TRANSLATION (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_address_translation ) to connect the client machines to the public network. To the public network, it appears that there is ONLY ONE machine connecting -- the NAT box (router) itself.
You will leave the DHCP *SERVER* (LAN SIDE) running on the router, you will disable the DHCP *CLIENT* (WAN SIDE) and configure the WAN IP/NETMASK/DNS/GATEWAY to the specifications required by the ISP. You will use the router's WAN port to connect to your ISP, you will use any LAN port to connect to your computer, and you will use the WiFi to connect to your phone. You will then have private IP addresses assigned to your computer and your phone, and these devices will be able to connect through your ISP's network via the router.
So doing that the ISP will see my router as my computer, then both my phone and computer can connect at the same time because they'll have their own private IP?

Make sure that you open up the port on your computer's firewall, your router, and anything else that might have a say in your internet traffic.
I'm not going to explain it, but Google "port forwarding".
im in the campus dorms
i dont think i can do any port forwarding as i dont know how the whole lan thing is set up here
thanks
i am currently having the same problem ...i have forwarded the port 5900 on my router and opened up my firewall...could i possibly have to do something to the modem as well or could it be something else
i am on a I touch 3g slide and running windows xp home
i have also heard that port tunneling may be neccesary but i lack the knowledge to do so any help would be appreciated
its all about port forwarding because you have dynamic ip addresses on the LAN side and most likely you have a dynamic WAN ip also. Usually to do VNC you have to have a Public IP address. Home ADSL circuits provide one public ip address but out of a NAT pool so it will change. This could cause an issue unless you want to check the destinations ip address everyday. So instead of VNC to an ip address you can vnc to a host name. Dyndns provides a good service for free. So that solves the dynamic IP issue.
Now to the port issue. Since the internal LAN will assign each host a 192.xxx.xxx.xxx ip address (which are not publicly routed), you have to do port forwarding. To do this go to the command prompt (start>run>cmd) and type in "ipconfig /all" and press enter. Find the default gateway ip address (192.xxx.xxx.xxx). Type that into the web browser. That will log you into your router. I have a 2wire router provided by att so if you have different you will have to discover this on your on. Go to firewall settings and then add a new user-defined application. basically make a new application.
protocol tcp
port range 5900 (i believe that is right)
and then add it to the correct computer.
That should send all data on that port to that host.
Hope that has helped a little bit. if not, google it.
you can also try

You may want to give up with that and try out PhoneMyPC. I'm not 100% sure of how they do their tunneling, but I can tell you I've tested it a few times and it always manages to get through even if I purposely change WAN ip addresses and I don't do any port forwarding for it.
It also runs way faster (albeit lower resolution, i think) and more fluidly than either of the RDP or VNC solutions I tried out. I'm very impressed with it so far. I can even jump online with it and pull up my security camera software and actually see the live video feed from it, all running on my PC at home, even just over a 3G connection.
I'm wondering if anyone here has traveled to a hotel (room) where they only offered wired internet and were able to use a router to "wifi" their room
I know, in general terms, this can be done...but i'm trying to avoid bringing a laptop (would like to bring only my tablet)
the only thing is that i don't know if the hotel wired connection asks you to log in or hit an "i agree" to the terms before allowing you to connect to the internet
if this is the case (that you are being proxied through a login or "i agree" for terms)...is it possible to do with a standard router, where i would just connect my router to the connection and being able to send the connection wifi?
i know i can set up the bulk before i go on my trip (set up the ssid, password, etc)...but i'd just like to plug the router and use the wifi connection on my tablet to accept the terms, if any
hope i'm clear in my query...thanks for the help!
Never tried it, but I'd imagine that whatever login portal might come up from a wired connection would also come up on the wireless connections, step through that, and browse...
I see no reason why it wouldn't work. Also some hotels dont make you login, or click I agree, but most of the ones I stayed at did.And even with the router you'll be able to connect one device only.

Static IP everything at 192.168.1.100 and deal with IP conflicts?
i guess i could test...i only want one device to be connected to the router anyway..so multiple ip's are not a problem..
the problem i see is that the portals that the hotels make you log onto usually assign an ip to that mac address..which would be my router...so wouldn't my tablet not have an internet connection?
would bridge mode be a better option? (after searching a few forums, someone suggested that)
i know travel routers have particular firmwares that allow you to browse through that portal to let you log in...but i'm assuming it is just makign the router into a bridge? i would assume a standard router (i have dd-wrt installed on it) would be able to do it as well?
I don't think that will be an issue, but if that happens, clone the MAC... in terminal emulator as root:
#ip l set eth0 address <mac>
I can't "thank" you for some reason...the button is not popping up...but i will when i see it again...thanks and i will let this thread know when it happens to see if it works...
No thanks button in OT.
Hey guys, I got a problem with wifi on my One. The thing is I got a couple of wifi routers in my house (one can't cover the entire building) and they're both broadcasting the same SSID, password etc. basically one is connected via RJ45 to the other and set up exactly the same way. Problem is when I move around the house and lose connection to one of my routers and the phone automatically connects to the other all my connections on the phone stop working and I have to turn my wifi off and on again. Same thing happens when I'm at my university, each floor has 2 wifi routers on it and phone tends to jump between them screwing up the internet connection each time. I know it might not be the biggest issue in the world but still it's quite annoying especially since my old SGS didn't have this problem. My phone is not branded and of course up to date. Thanks for any advice.

From my experience after installing a lot of different wifi's in different operation modes, it all depends on how exactly the routers have been setup.
But to answer your initial question- the topic at hand; as long as the wifi's broadcasts the same SSID, you cannot choose which of the two individual routers you want to connect to. Please someone correct me if I'm wrong, but afaik this is not possible. If you want the possibility to choose, then set them up with different SSID's. This would be the _easiest_ solution, just make sure they broadcasts at different frequencies with at least 5 channels apart, i.e. channel 1 and 6, or 6 and 11, or 1 and 11. These are the most popular ones in the 2.4 GHz spectrum. If you use 5 GHz you have a lot more to choose from.
Now, if it's important that your network works seamlessly (with the same SSID), I can provide a step by step guide upon request.
But the solution to your current problem, from my experience; yes you have to turn the wifi off and then on again to "force" the wlan-card on your cell phone to -faster- connect to the closest router, otherwise it will take maybe 15-45 seconds before it does this automatically. It's basically the same with computers. This mostly happens if the wlan-card are within range of both networks, but it will try to stay connected to current one before changing.
And there are some important guidelines to follow when you connect one router to another if they are from the same brand (because of the ip-range and gateway). I once had to setup 8 wifi-routers in a house, because of the size and the thick concrete walls (same SSID)...
The problem is my laptops and other phones don't seem to have this problem, also the phone doesn't 'fix' itself after 40 or so secs it just stays broken as far as I've noticed forever (or at least till i leave my house). Also it doesn't have a problem connecting to the other router, it loses connection, looks for available networks, finds my other router, connects and... nothing works. Exact same thing at the university, finds routers, connects with 5/5 bars and it just doesn't work.

Are you sure you have it setup with DHCP and not some static ip-settings? Can you post some screenshots of your wifi-settings?
If you haven't tried already, get your phone to "forget" it's settings so you have to reenter the password and make sure it's set to DHCP. But first take out the power from both your routers so they get a reboot, and make sure the ethernetcable is connected from one of the LAN ports on the main router connected to the internet (from your cable/dsl/fiber-modem), and in to the WAN/Internet port on the secondary router. Btw what routers do you use as master and slave?
Yes of course I have the routers set up just like you say And yes I'm using DHCP on both of them. They are Airlive 1600GL with tomato rom as main and WR740N as secondary. I took screenshots of what seemed relevant sorry the main router's settings are not in English but it seems that would require me to reflash it with a different rom.

What's with the DNS being 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4?

These are Google DNS.
I would do it simple and solve it by changing the SSID on the slave router to something different, like wireless2, and change channel to 1. Or change the channel on the master router from 8 to 11. Your phone will probably change from one network to another faster this way, or it's at least easier for you to manually choose.
If that doesn't help, and the network is 100% problemfree for other wireless devices, I guess it must be a firmware or hardware problem with your One's wlan-card. Most likely firmware.
I will try it in the morning but still I'm pretty confident it's not the matter of setting up my home network but rather One's software bug. I can't say with 100% certainty right now but I don't remember having this issue before the update to the newest Android version.
Both routers need to be on the same subnet, enable dhcp server on one and disable it on the second one. Also set the second one as an access point only with a static ip in the same subnet.
The problem you have now is that wireless clients must negotiate a new ip when switching routers because of different subnets assigned to each.
Let me know if you need more details.
But still that would fix the problem at my home, what about when I'm somewhere else?
What ROM are you running? I leave wifi enabled all the time and haven't had any issues moving between networks, it automatically connects when another network is in range.
Android 4.3 with Sense 5.5 all stock not even rooted.
Since your completely stock it should just work. I'd try fixing the home network first and see if that solves the issue at home, then move on to trying to figure out the network issue at school.
Router1 - master
Internet connected to wan port
Cable from lan port to a lan port on router2
Dhcp: enabled with an ip range of 192.168.1.100 and up
Lan ip 192.168.1.1
Channel 1
Router2 - slave
Nothing connected to wan port
Cable from Router1 lan port to lan port on this router
Dhcp: disabled
Lan ip 192.168.1.2
Channel 11
Set ssid and wpa settings the same on both routers.
With this setup clients can hop from one access point to the other without a dhcp request or ip change, should switch within seconds.

Tried that setup for many times over the years I've worked with routers, from my experience that is unstable.
