I have recently accuired the TomTom Navagator 2 software and am extremely pleased with it.
I do not currently have any car kit for making handsfree phone calls.
I have installed tha loud voice prompts so that the tomtom voice commands can be heard through the xda's speakers and im happy with this.
However compared to the loud voice prompts by the navigator software the handsfree audio available through the xdas speaker during a phone call is almost inaudiable over the road noise.
I therefore think im going to have to buy or build some handsfree.
My question is primarilly if im to use the car_audio_r and car _audio_l pins to output audio does all audio output through these pins or only phone audio. ie will i also hear the navigator voice prompts through my hands free (this is what i want)
Also Im wondering if it is possible to use the output from these pins to send audio to a car speaker without connecting an external mic and continueing to use the microfone built in to the xda during phone calls as know one has ever complained about not hearing me - i just cant hear them.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give - im sure somebody out there has played with this allready.

All audio (phone and PDA) is output on these pins.

As long as leave the CAR_ON# pin open (i.e. not connect it to ground or 5V), the microphone of the device is used.

Do you mean that internal microphone is used but all audio is still output to the car_audio_r and car _audio_l pins with the car_on# pin left open.

That sounds like exactly what i need - ill modify my tomtom cable to include the 2 new connectors then run an extra cable out of the 3 way connector on the tomtom lead to go to either my car stereo or a speaker amp mounted under the seat or something.
I dont know if my stereo in my car will except car phone input as its in the shop at the moment getting repaired so i cant take it out - but how do these things usually work - does a pin on the stereo side have to go +5 or GND for the car phone audio to replace the music or does it detect audio and automatically cut in over the music... excuse my ignorance car stereos and car kits are not in my realm of expertise.
If there is a pin that has to be made +5 or GND on steroes to know when the audio needs to be output can the xda handle this at all...
Usually car radios have a mute input to turn off or down the music when the phone needs the speakers. The XDA does not have such an output. You could fabricate something that detects audio and then for a preset time presents the right mute signal to the radio.
Always questions ask you do... Try and fail you must to learn!

i'm using an r35 itech headset. has ad2p, you can change the headset to plug in more quality cans (uses a 3.5mm jack), there's a buzzer that can be enabled when a call comes through. take note, this is a clip-type headset. which means the "body" is clipped to my collar while there's a wire which leads to the earpiece. i like it because i don't have anything dangling in my ear all the time.
others like the jabra have features like caller id, a2dp, etc.

I have both Jabra BT8010 and i.Tech Clip D. I myself would recommend Jabra for using with Advantage.
I have a Jabra 8010 and now I like it. Initial results were poor but not because of the Jabra. The problems were regristery settings and I suspect they affected most blue tooth headsets.

i used this jabra and is very bad ..i throw it away and now i use nokia BH 900.and is very good on the athena.ok you dont have the dialing mode from this headset but you have the voice dialing and voice is very clean.
I tried the Jabra for a while and still use it for stereo, but for everyday use, I'm back to my BlueAnt V12. The V12 has vibrate feature and shows incoming numbers (not names). It is working well for me. Keeps a good connection, great range, voice dial works reliably. I can hear people and they can hear me. That's the main things I want.
IMHO, the Jabra is better in theory than in practice. Biggest deal breaker for me was that all audio seemed to go to the headset, with no audible alarms or ringtones. Since I only put it on when I need it, this wasn't so great for me. It you wear it 20/7 (allowing four hours for sleep) I think it would be OK.
I'm using the simple HTC M100.
Everything goes OK. Only problem I got is because I have beard and when touch the microphone of the M100 they hear terrible noise in the other end.
Two solutions: a) Peel my face or b) Change to other headset that avoid the problem.
The HTC M100 is cheap and reliable anyway.

How do you connect a BT headset and a regular pair of headphones at the same time? Ive read so much info about the X7500 now so Im a bit confused

nope, i hardly plug anything in the 3.5 jack of my u1000. my bluetooth is turned on like 24 hours a day =)
what i do is my itech r35 is bonded with my u1000. the setting is only for hands free...meaning when a call comes in i then answer it using the r35. i have another bt headset: jabra...and i forgot the model...but basically it's the same as the r35 (interchangeable headsets). that unit is bonded to my u1000 for music. i leave the jabra in my car as it's connected to the car stereo. so, whenever i'm in the car i can then listen to my soundz anytime. when a call comes through, the music pauses. i then answer the call using my r35.
when i'm not in the car, i can set the r35 for both handsfree and stereo....if i want to listen to my tunez that is.
even if you have a headset bonded to your unit, you can still plug in a 3.5mm jack headphone. what happens is the music will be played. if there's a call, it goes through your bonded headset. the music will simply pause...once your call is done the music resumes. unless you set your headset for hands free AND a2dp stereo, plugging in a 3.5mm headphone will not be a problem.
sound is not bad at all. i mean we're not talking about having bang and olfusen quality here =) but the soundz coming out of my r35 or the jabra are quite good. coupled with the car speakers, there you go. i use the regular media player and i've installed the skin with large keys for easy control.

Go for a Style-i !! Then in car use the headphones on it - works great, and you can use it to make callls during the day too when not in the car - and you dont look like a knob talking to yourself like you do with an earpiece on!

My HTC is far more than simply a phone for me - it is an indispensable productivity component for my business. In particular, I'm addicted to Microsoft Voice Command - and use it heavily to announce my daily appointments and upcoming events. While the style-i seems quite compelling, I don't see it as a hands-free device. I need to look like a "knob" as I've trained myself to listen to announcements from my PDA such as "Meeting with Mr. Smith in 10 minutes" or "Mr. Smith calling on mobile" during face-to-face conversations while not going through all the fumbling, grabbing and excusing myself I would have to do without a hands free bluetooth device. For a busy person like me, the "whisper in the ear" aspect of hands free bluetooth is incredible - even if I do look like Lt. Uhura.
So, I need the following from my bluetooth device:
1) best sound possible
2) complete functionality with MS Voice Command
I have been using the Jawbone now for about two months and I am utterly, completely thrilled. Granted, it took some registry hacks to get the HTC to only accept voice input from the Jawbone and also to only output to the Jawbone (I am a user, not a developer) but it now works flawlessly. I cannot recommend it enough.
Many people complain that the buttons on the Jawbone are "mushy". I think the problem is that users simply take one of the stock earpieces and put on the Jawbone. I certainly did at first and found the volume too low, the Jawbone very uncomfortable and the buttons incredibly mushy. I then spent over an hour trying the different earpieces and earbuds provided, bending the earpiece I preferred until the earbud finally fit snugly and comfortably in my ear. Suddenly, the sound quality was fantastic (I had to turn down the volume - a first for me), I couldn't even feel the Jawbone and the buttons felt far more crisp.
I use it with a Sony Ericsson HBH 662. It has a small display for the number. I especially love the great sound. Works really well with voice dial. Even in the car.

I agree!! Style-i is fantastic... it does drop calls sometimes, but all you have to do is quickly go into Comm Manager, re-activate bluetooth and press the call button on the style I and you're back... takes seconds... and only happens to me once every couple of weeks if that!
It's crystal clear both ends, easy to use, and has a dial pad on the device! 9/10!

OK, after reading this I ordered a Jawbone. It's fantastic. I've spent ages already phoning myself while doing the vacuum cleaning.
Anyway, I was wondering if you have any pointers for:
1) Microsoft Voice Command - Is it necessary to purchase this or is it included in the ROM? And what version do you recommend
2) Registry settings needed to get VoiceCommand working as you described

I just bought a Sennheiser VMX 100 bluetooth headset for use with my Dopod U1000. A very good one in term of audio quality on both ends.
The problem is that it keeps disconnected after several calls. Anybody knows how to fix this?

When answering phone calls with headphones plugged in sound comes through clearly. I can hear the other person just find. However, they can not hear me.
Is there a way to enable the internal microphone on the device while having headphones connected?

I am looking for the same solution. I hooked up my phone to my car with aux input to listen music in the car. but when I get a call I have to unplug it because the mic on phone is disabled..if anyone knows a fix for it it would be a huge favor.Thanks

Yeah same deal, Bluetooth headphones would apply aswell.
You could get an adapter that has a built in microphone. They're available and not expensive.

But that is just a workaround. The problem is still there. I don't think it is that hard to fix, but I don't know how or where to mess up with it.
Also, it would be interesting if there was an option to use Kaiser's automatic answering after 3 ring with the speakerphone.. but that's a little offtopic I think

When a headset is plugged in the mini usb port the unit (just like any other phone) it goes into headset profile and switches mic input to the headset.
Are you using the supplied headset (mini usb) or an adapter for 3.5mm jack?
The supplied headset enables the mike (in the small bulb on the cable) for talking and most people lift this to their mouths to talk on any phone.
If anyone is having this problem with a BT headphone (not headset!) then check in BT settings that the headphones are not set for 'Use as BT headset' only for 'Wireless Stereo'.

You said that the phone switches profiles. When a 3.5mm external headphone is connected the phone switches to headset mode and with this we can assume that the phone is looking for external microphone aswell.
Solution: Change the headset profile to use the internal microphone rather than looking for a external microphone.
Goal: Using 3.5mm headphones with phones internal microphone.

Yep, you got it. You need an 'intelligent' app that knows you have a headset connected (usb adapter) but no mike so it can keep the internal mike on!!
Nothing out there that is that clever but the guys doing Kiaser Tweak may be able to give you something that you can manually select the profile to enable the internal mike!!
Why not ask them???

Yes, if they could make this with a mic adapter, that would be cool.
But for now, this beats rigging something from radio shack - splicing a few wires together just because someone is picky with length..

I have TomTom7 installed which is working fine (almost).
When I place my Diamond in the car holder (three way output w. USB-Charge/USB-Headphones/3,5mm Headphone) all sounds from my phone are muted (believed to be connected to a headphone I guess).
I could connect the phone to the car audio system via a 3,5 mm audio plug, but then I cannot listen to the radio at the same time as navigating with TomTom.
Is there any known way to solve this so the TomTom7 directions and warnings are always routed through the Diamond internal speaker?

i have this carholder too, it's from brodit right? It's true, the moment you plug in the diamond it thinks it's connected to a headset, so no sound from internal speaker. Ideal for listening to music when connected to your car stereo ofcourse, but when receiving a call you have to take out the diamond, because the sound goes through the car speakers (if the output is connected to your car stereo ofcourse) but you can't talk back because diamonds mic is also muted! I hope there is a way to solve this. Maybe a little program that allows you to direct sound and mic settings?
It's also a similar problem with the little USB to 3.5mm audio adapters, they make the diamond think there is a mic plugged in when there isn't and when someone calls you while you're listening to music, they cant hear you unless you unplug the headphones.
I've also noticed that when the diamond is in my car and connected to my bluetooth kit, the calls come via bluetooth but TomTom does not, this particularly annoys me, as when I'm listening to loud music I miss the speed camera alerts and also obviously cant hear the voice directions.
There seem to be some fairly serious shortcomings in this area. A simple set of options that let the user choose what he/she likes would be best.

Yesterday driving home from my work I noticed that the ring tone on an incoming call was heard even when the phone was placed in the holder...
So there must be a way to have the sound re-directed to the internal speaker???

if you rename btmusic.exe.config (not btmusic.exe!!) you can run it too with .NET CF 3.5

Rename to what?
I figured it out. Renaming btmusic.exe.config to btmusic.exe.configx does it.
I'm just curious what would be the best way to get all of the new music on my Captivate onto my car speakers when driving. I have built in bluetooth in the car and would love if there is a way to use a software solution to stream the music. If that's not possible I'm a bit lost on what the preferred method would be. If your BT stereo supports A2DP, then just stream from the Cappy to the radio. I do that and it sounds great. I also have a 3.5mm jack on the front, but that is an analog signal and the difference in sound quality, while slight, is noticeable. My car radio links automatically with my phone when I get in (so long as BT is enabled on the phone) and both hands-free and BT audio profiles are connected. All I have to do is start the music player on the phone and the radio switches input automatically. It also switches to phone profile and pauses the music player when a call comes in.

I'll have to check the link in a minute and I'll have to research about my BT connection supporting A2DP as well, but I appreciate the options. Hopefully one will work.
I'm really hoping the A2DP option works, that would be ideal for me, but it is a VW factory BT option that's on the car, so I'm not sure how sophisticated it is.
I'll try to remember to get back here with a post, in the event someone in the future stumbles on this thread looking for the same advice.

I have a Captivate running a custom ROM with a custom Kernel.
There had been some grumblings about the speaker port not working correctly for quite a while, but I think they have now resolved it.
I wasn't sure if this was going to be an issue, so I was hoping for something along the lines of a BT connection solution.
Unfortunately, I just read the following piece of garbage info from a different site:
Audio streaming is NOT Supported on 2010 Passat, EOS, Tiguan, CC, Jetta TDI sedan or Touareg
Looks like Aux. cable for me.

Man, that's too bad. You'd think a 2010 vehicle would be up to date with the tech. I know some older cars were hands-free profile only because A2DP was not widespread, but a 2010 not having it is just silly. My radio is an aftermarket Sony I bought in 2009 and it not only supports music streamin via BT and has a 3.5mm AUX input, it has a USB port that I can put a thumbdrive with music in and a port in the back for an iPod (if I was stupid enough to own one and pay for the optional cable) and it also has HD radio. VW is usually further forward than most imports. Oh well, at least you can do the cable thing. Get a quality one, some cheapies are known to short contacts and cause problems.
I use a AUX input in my car and it works pretty well. The only complaint I really have is the sound is at a lot lower volume than radio and mini-usb port.

Not to point out the obvious, but you do realize that the AUX port is multi-volumed.....right?
You turn up the volume on your handset AND you turn up the volume on your car stereo.
From what I've read, it appears you should turn your "media volume" up to 50-80% and leave it there, then use your car stereo volume button to alter the overall volume.
If it's still not loud enough from there, either you have a short or something is up with your output.
Your ears should be bleeding.

Yea, I turn the volume up all the way on my phone whenever I plug it in. It was the same way when I used my iPod Touch.
