Mobile GMaps working on Kaiser? - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III Themes and Apps

Hi guys... anyone played with the application http://www.mgmaps.com/ and actually got it to work with the internal GPS unit?
I've tried, but all I get is "GPS functionality not available on this phone".
Took a look on their support forum, and lots of others seem to be having difficulty getting this baby to recognize internal GPS units.
So,,, just thought I'd ask the experts...
/drt

They have a page that talks about how to fully set it up on a Windows Mobile device.
http://www.mgmaps.com/winset/
Look at step 13. "If you have an internal GPS on WM6, you can assign a virtual serial port to it with this GPSID Configuration utility." They link to a .CAB that you can download.
Try that.

Thanks for the idea, but it doesn't seem to make any difference. No mater what I set the ports to, I get the same message. Do you have settings which work?

i dont get it, why not just install the free google maps software?

Because it is software that amazingly can access arieal photos from many different sources, also sets up a storage for maps so you can use them offline and reload then instead of downloading the images everytime you start google maps. I am working on this and will post as soon as I have an answer.

Cool ways to use the GPS in the Kaiser

There are two apps that I have used that I must say make the GPS built into the Kaiser along with its data connectivity pretty cool. Of course, the GPS is a great tool for mapping software such as TomTom, iGuidance, Google Maps, MS Live Search, and others... but the possibilities of GPS in a connected device like the Kaiser can lead to many other great things. Two that I have found useful are Mobile Justice and 3d Tracking. Here is a quick description of what they are.
First, I have installed Mobile Justice which alerts you when a SIM card is changed and will send a text message to a number of your choosing when it is changed... for example it was stolen and a card was sent in. It can also send the current GPS location. In addition, you can send the device a text message with a keyword and request at any time, the current GPS location. You can also put a message on the device screen. I know people often cook this application into ROMs. I hope that someone does this for a future Kaiser kitchen. I learned about the new GPS features here: http://www.wmexperts.com/articles/mobile_justice_sms_your_phone.html
The other app that I have used that is kind of nifty is 3d tracking. It updates your GPS location in near real time to a website that you can use a PC to monitor. The mapping is done using Google maps. Very cool way to keep track of valuables such as your teenagers. ;-)
http://free.3dtracking.net/home.aspx
What other cool uses for the GPS have you found to use with your Kaiser?
I think the latest is the GPS photo functionality that was discovered to be built in. We were talking about this functionality at work but in an actual camera. Little did I know that i would discover this same function active in my TyTn II

I did see that in the forums which just made the camera in the phone that much more useful. Very useful when on hikes or vacationing to take a quick snapshot. Sure, the camera on the phone is not a replacement for a high quality digital camera, but it is convenient and in outdoor light, does a pretty good job. Combined with the GPS tagging, it is fun too. I hope we get to see even more uses for the integrated GPS.
Please explain

Can you please explain this function and how it can be used.
I am using Nokia's smart2go gps software in my Tytn-II and its working gr8, with Nokia's maploader u can download very detailed maps with very good databases particularly for middle-east.
Similar to your Mobile Justice product, here's one I saw the other day. Its kind of like LoJack for your phone:
http://www.pocketpc-live.com/pocketpc-softwares/ultimate-theft-alert-v3-for-pocket-pcs-2.html
It You can have your phone let you know where it is if its ever lost.
The company I work for does gps tracking for sports (running, skiing etc). I won't post the link, as i dont want to be seen as advertising.
But its pretty cool to be able to see how fast you ski (57.2mph is my fastest so far).
Someone sent me a note on this site that does something similar to 3d tracking. I will try it out now to see how it works.
http://gps.gpsxml.com/
Here is another tool that has a description with features similar to WIMP (Where Is My Phone) and Mobile Justice. Has anyone heard of it or tested it before? It is called Ultimate Theft Alert and has GPS as an add-on option.
http://www.pocketpc-live.com/pocketpc-softwares/ultimate-theft-alert-v3-for-pocket-pcs-2.html
I had no idea there were so many tools for GPS integrated mobile phones. Here is another freebie, this time from a well known PPC developer, VITO Technology. It is called FindMe
http://www.vitotechnology.com/en/products/findme.html
And for those with coding experience... here is an example with source code.

Basic use would be if you wanted to add pictures to a map (google earth i believe supports this) you take a picture and in geomarks your pic.
It is basically done by regedit - you can read more on this in this exact forum (should be on page one or two -- easy for us to say this while the kaiser forum is still fresh)
Have a look at this..... http://www.reperion.com/
Downloaded the software, registered an account and now my handset can be tracked by anyone with a pc.
yeah the file download was down before, working now, will try this one out

This is free for now it seems. I will try it out. Do you know if it is any different than 3d tracking? That one is free too.
Had a quick look t 3d tracking, reprion looks to do asimilar thing.
Both seem pretty cool anyway
Some more interesting GPS software: http://www.jgui.net/gps/index.html
Personal observation: There should be a standard for SMS messages whereby the GPS coordinates of the sender can be sent along with text or mms messages. This would be handy for location based services and when chatting with friends.

Somthing wrong with the GPS
Hi
There's something definitely wrong with the GPS happening from time to time.
Today, TomTom was off by nearly 1 kilometre using the internal GPS. Using BT GPS everything was fine.
After a restart: the location was spot on again.
It has happened to me 3-4 times now that the GPS is completely off the charts.
Wonder if this could be fixed with a Radio ROM update ..

Sorry to maybe possible hijack this threat a little. I am also using smart2go. But I can't download any maps to my MicroSD with the Maploader. It always complaint that there is no space in my card (which has 3.7GB free). How were you able to download the maps to your card?
Many thanks in advance!
PS. Never mind. I found out that Smart2Go probably has a problem with storage cards larger than 2GB as if I use smaller MicroSD cards, the Map Loader works fine. So the solution is to run Smart2Go with a blank 2G or smaller card, then copy the files to the 4G MicroSDHC. Then Map Loader works (with a size limit of 1.8G for map data).....
Ok so still having some problems.
As noted here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=332811
Some programs don't instal for me, WIMP did install however (haven't tested it yet) so my assumption would be some kind of security setting that is on when installing cabs, do you guys turn it off? (i remember there was a way to do this with the Hermes) or do these apps just install out of the box (per se)?
EDIT:
Looks like its some kind of problem when i transfer the file over via activesync to the card. I put it on via straight pc to another card and it installs fine.

Free Off-Line GPS Mapping

I found another FREE app.
Nokia is giving away for FREE a GPS software that makes possible something that even Google Maps can't: off-line mapping with use of GPS. Online mapping is not a big deal because Google, Yahoo, Microsoft and others offer it too, but with smart2go you can use GPS in combination with maps even when you are not connected to the Internet!
Here's the link to the review. From there, you can go to the site......
http://msmobiles.com/news.php/7180.html
Tested this on the N95 today and it was great, installed it on my Kaiser and it works well
I think this is much better than google maps. Gps located my location very quickly. Navigation is smooth and accurate(I think navigation lasts 3 days, I think). Very Nice me think
Thank you very much. Although I have a navigation software these cards are often better for walkers. That's why I installed Google Maps. Now I don't have to stress my free data volume so far.
I just wanted to Bump this. This is software is very handy, and FREE, and I didn't want it to get lost. Guys, you really need to try it!!!
I am confused as to what to do. I downloaded the software. But how do I get the maps on the phone?
seems to work fine on my att tilt (although i haven't left the house yet ).

you use your Wifi connection to download maps of the area you will going to, then, your phone uses it's GPS with the maps d/l'ed.
So am I correct in saying that as you surf the map using wifi etc. it stores the data on your SD card and uses it when you need it. So lets say you live in Louisiana, you can surf the whole state while on wifi or a router etc.. and it will store the map for later use??? is this correct???
seems like it still needs a data connection?
if youre driving, how can it use wifi if you cant connect to an access point?
that must mean it cannot download the map?
1. I go to ... http://www.smart2go.com/en/download/
2. select "Via PC"
3. all i am seeing is bunch of NOKIA softwares
the question is ... which particular model should we download for HTC? I selected the E95 model and I notice the file extension is slightly different, is "File: nokia_maps_1_0_upgrade_ROM.sis" instead *.CAB
any advise? thanks in advance.
It said to download the "Generic" one, that's what I did.
I am just not clear on down loading the map data!
so is this better than TomTom????
EDIT: never mind
"...although you can't do navigation (route calculation) for FREE with this program (Nokia demands money for that), you can however use it as a FREE map with GPS support!"
I have read a little more, will try downloading the map app

It's right there. The first option on that list is "Generic: Windows Mobile 5 Phone Edition".
And they also say: "Is your device not listed? Please choose the generic version for any unlisted devices that use Windows Mobile".
ok, I there has to be away to download a complete map instead of surfing the states to get some mapping data?????
Also were doesit store all its data?? I will look in the SD card.
Yes you can download the mapping data to your SD Card.
Use the mapping tool provided on the website.
You need to edit the qf file using notepad to say 1.3 rather than 1.1 or you cant do it.
I am downloading it now, and hopefully it is more accurate than google maps! BTW, is there any other gps software that i can use with my tilt??
Thanks.
Crap, i downloaded the generic version and i did not install on my Tilt. Any help??!!
so this is the only software that lets you use GPS without being connected to the internet?
i have the t-zone plan. it's probably too slow to use google maps gps right? or how does it work.. does it download ALL the directions at once, so that i would have to wait only 1-2 minutes max for each set of directions? or does it obtain the information right before i have ot make a turn and such?

Installing Garmin Mobile XT on Diamond

Installation procedure:
a) Start installation of 'GarminMobileXTforWindowsMobile_42020w.e xe' from PC through ActiveSync. Select your Storage Card as destination. During the installation, files will be copied to your storage card. The files should appear in '\Storage Card\Garmin\Apps\WM'.
b) Install 'GarminMobileXTSupportFiles_4xxxx.exe' for voice files.
c) Install 'GarminMobileXTFreeBasemap_4xxxx.exe' for Garmin's base map.

I have got the above instructions from a different site, but since the Diamond does not have a Storage Card, where I am supposed to install the Garmin app?
I have tried installing to the 4GB internal storage but it's not showing up during the installation as a storage destination. If it's not an option, will it eat up a lot of my valuable storage if I install to the phone default storage?
Also are there any alternative FREE GPS navigation software available for WM6 that worth checking out? This is my first GPS enabled mobile phone and I am anxious to try it out.
I am sorry if this has been answered before, but I have tried to search for an answer to this but not found any.
You install it to "Internal Storage" but that will be obvious because this is the only choice the garminxt install will give you.
I've been playing with GarminXT and so far I prefere it over TomTom.
So how memory would I have left with after installing the main application, the support files and the maps ? I wish if there a way to install to 4GB internal storage instead if using the default phone storage.
Internal storage is the 4GB. Depending on the maps you have... I have a full install of worldwide base + support files + detailed Canada takes up about 200mb... where I have TomTom I can't just chose detailed canada its all of NA or nothing and it takes up 1.4GB.
Go to Device Settings -> Connections -> USB to PC
Once you are inside here, select "Disk Drive (Faster File Transfer)" and also "Ask about connection type when I connect"
This way, when you connect your device to the PC, you can choose wether to enable ActiveSync or Disk mode.
For this specific case, to install Garmin, choose "Disk mode"...this emulates a removable storage on your PC, and then Garmin will detect this.
This is how I've done it, and worked 100%.

Ok I have managed to get Garmin successfully installed in my Diamond However when I installed the files using the 'disk mode' option, I had to disconnect the the USB cable to complete the software installation in my phone as it did not prompt me for any additional steps in the phone when the USB cable is still connected.
Anyways, thank you all for your assistance. I am glad to have found this resourceful forum.

When the phone is in disk mode the phone itself is not able to see the internal memory. This prevents you from possible locking of files by the phone while trying to manipulate via PC.
Activesync works just as fast as disk mode, it is the phone's usb speed that makes the difference with the diamond.

Remote GPS
Hit Enable
Hopefully that should work
Enable?
I have the same problem
Could you be a little more precise about "Hit Enable"?
I don't have that setting under Settings-System in-Remote GPS
And shouldn't it be a setting somewhere inside the Garmin application since there is no problem using Tomtom with the internal GPS?
But in Garmin I canĀ“t find anywhere to change GPS-settings and when I go into the settings about gps in Garmin it starts looking for a bluetooth gps right away with no possibillity to change.

You need to unlock your GPS or rather the Garmin XT software for it to work with your internal GPS. You do this by using JetMouse Keygen 1.3 (or 1.5) and pasting the generated code based on your Device ID (explained in a previous post where to find that) into a txt file called sw.unl (note pls make sure that the .txt extension is changed to .unl) to be placed into your garmin folder. For JM just google for it.

GPS?

(maybe a stupid question...) Doesn't the Touch Diamond have a built-in GPS receiver? If yes, how to I activate it? (can't find it anyware with the TRL cooked ROM). Thx.
YES if you bought your Diamond didn`t you read specs. ? You`re buying random stuff ?
You don`t need to activate that you need software which can use it. E.g. TomTom, iGO, Garmin, McGuider etc ...
also, try Google Maps, works nicely -> http://www.google.com/gmm/
To be more clear, GPS is automatically activated (and deactivated) by the software that uses it. You don't need to worry about it.

Thanks, guys - you are GOLD. Got it working now - in Google Maps. Any suggestions for an alternative GPS app? - TomTom, IGo, Garmin, Route 66? What's best?

2. Local download of map data to internal storage.
3. Good and updated European coverage.
Thx.

Am I missing something?
happyguy82 was perfectly right that you have to make sure that you know the com port in external GPS. Anyone trying to get TomTom 6 working knows this for a fact.
Unless of course you were being sarcastic and the forum hasn't put that across?
From the Manual:
"External GPS: Set the appropriate GPS communication ports, if required.
You may need to do this when there are programs on your device that
access GPS data or you have connected a GPS receiver to your device."
sorry if i am wrong, but i think external GPS settings are for an external gps and not the built in. i never touched this settings except when i had an ETEN with a defective gps and i used an external one. right now my GPS hardware port is set to (none) and my iGO8 works just fine with the port it autodetected. tom tom needs special settings for this? sorry didn't know and i fail to see why......
really, sometimes is a good idea to read the manual

A2. Possible with Garmin Mobile XT. I use Garmin and the beauty of it is that everytime I flash a ROM, once all the extras are loaded and the Diamond starts up, I get auto-prompted if I want to install Garmin, then agree to the license and it's done! No need to install CABs again or run Mapsource or anything! One thing I still haven't figured out is how to back-up my custom locations so I can reload them after flashing.
Installing TomTom, iGO
Ok, i need some serious help when it comes to installing TomTom, iGo or any other of these GPS apps. All the readme: s say you're suppose to copy the folders to your SD card, but obviously the Diamond uses internal memory, so this can't be done. I've tried plugging in the Diamond to my computer, choosing "storage card" instead of ActiveSync, and copying the iGo folder into the program files directory of the internalmemory. But nothing happens. Even if I open the iGo .exe from the Diamond itself later on. So again, can someone please tell me how to install one of these things?

[ROM] (Phone+GPS+Vista GPS+touch)Thaihugo's shift age of reason and age of beauty

Hello,
I'm still working on the different sound topics, but here are my newest roms.
I call them age of reason and age of beauty. This is a kind of trial for the second one...
The point is that we need a rom to really use the shift possibility. We need storage space, real gps useage, and of course maximum ram.
This is the age of reason rom. The lightest possible rom, where you can add a lot of programs, more if you use UPX compression.
You need to flash the radio from the phone+gps rom before using this one.
What does it have:
42 Mb storage and 22 Mb memory free
WORK on WINMOB SIDE
All standard Winmob application (ie, notes, media player, sms, phone, gps)
Task manager to soft reset, kill process, etc...
Clear temp (as requested)
USB tools
A homemade program to switch the speaker when on call. This program is for my development my roms only, and it work as a service, so it cannot be killed by the OS.
There is a managment program to remove the service if needed.
WORK WITH VISTA
storage:
A network browser to access the vista HDD
GPS:
An automatic GPS redirection to the PC side
This program is GPS2Blue, and it is preconfigured. You just have to launch the shortcut in HTC debug tools, and setup vista to get communication.
GPS works on both side, so you can use it on Windows mobile too of course
A few words on this last program.
GPS2Blue is a program made by Paludour. You can check his website here:
http://www.paludour.net
He allowed me to add this program to my roms, as you must normally download the cab from his site. This way, I could put it preconfigured on our devices. Many thanks to him for that.
When you are connected with usbtools to vista, click on this gps2blue icon, and you can receve the gps on vista if you follow this guideline:
http://www.paludour.net/GPS2BlueFAQ.html#USB
Just click on the gps2blue icon when you have to do the PDA side of this tutorial, the rest is aleady done.
The link for this rom is here:

MD5: 4c31ba01b109e22cd77bc3da53220672
Mirror:http://www.filesavr.com/light_1
Now for the other rom, the age of beauty:
This rom is the same, with one little twist: there is pointUI pre-installed.
This is a test, as I don't know if this is a good way instead of installing it afterward. Anyway, you are good for some eyecandy.
You have to pay for this: you have only 37 Mb of sorage, and 9 (yes, nine) megs of free memory after reset. But the good news is that you can disable it, and still be using the rom. So you can choose when you want eye candy, and when you want to be serious. If it is requested, I might update this one.
The link for this one is:

Enjoy and report here if you like it.
How to connect to vista side:
first, know the name of your shift. If you didn't change it it is SHIFT, otherwise type hostname in a command line in vista side.
then type services.msc and make sure the server service is started and set up to automatic if you want it to start every boot
Now type \\shift in your start menu. A windows must open, and you should see thinks, like Users, and printers. If not, don't worry, you can still go on. For more advanced users, it can be a good time to set up a share.
Now go on Snapvue side, and go to settings-connections-network plugin. First click on the "enable network folder" and wait for the reset.
Now, when reset is done, start usbtools to activate activesync. On vista side, make sure you are connected ( set up a partnership, or just click on connect whitout partneship. In this case, you will have to do it each time.)
Go back on Snapvue, and in network plugin click on New...
In remote path, enter \\shift\users if shift is your computername, and if you saw Users in the window on the second step.
Otherwise, you can enter \\shift\c$ to access the whole drive.
Click on map drive. Enter your username and your password (the one you use to login in vista)
Now, you can browse the pc using the network folder. You can add music to media player, browse pictures, wmv video...
You can even install some progs on vista side, but I don't recommend it. You might use it also as a data storage for SPB insight (my little baby) for example
thank you.

PointUI 2 is good, but I liked PointUI1.5 better. If they could let us choose the search provider that would be awesome.

Thanks ThaiHugo !
Flashing the rom at this very moment. PointUI
Has this ROM a higher mic gain setting as the default, i.e. is the microphone
issue solved (low sound recording volume) ?
Will report in this post later on.
----
The ROM looks and feels supersweet. However, if you work with it
for some time it get's laggy. No harm, we all understand it's a test.
Will play with the GPS2Blue thing to get that fixed too.

No, but I think this is going to be solved without flashing a new rom
Thanks ThaiHugo.
I preferred "age of beauty". How works the network browser to access the vista HDD? I am not able. If you can help me please.
Thanks Thaihugo, this rom is really good and a lot of free memory and storage for programs. Only problem is that when I have Vista side open gps isn't working for me. Well it is working (satellite used about 4-10) but Satellite Fixed stays 0. When I turn off vista side Satellite Fixed is after a few seconds 5-7.. I have Windows 7 build 7000 installed on vista side and Light version on snapvue side

I removed automatic connection setup to save space. You need to setup your connection by yourself in settings-connections. Once done, it will connect automaticaly. Most providers can sen you a sms from their web site with connection settings.
I'm not sure you want to lose 3 megs of storage for this one time operation, do you?
Downloading the ROM
Thanks

If you want, you can just disable the today plugin, and you get a full working wm for when you want to be serious. And you just soft reset when you are just using it as an updated snapvue.
To disale fully pointui:
delete the shortcut in \windows\startup (start2) and disable the today plugin.
To reenable, recheck the today plugin.
your rom is the best

Hello,
I'm still working on the different sound topics, but here are my newest roms.

It's pointless if you don't say which rom you want, and which site you can download from.
