(maybe a stupid question...) Doesn't the Touch Diamond have a built-in GPS receiver? If yes, how to I activate it? (can't find it anyware with the TRL cooked ROM). Thx.
YES if you bought your Diamond didn`t you read specs. ? You`re buying random stuff ?
You don`t need to activate that you need software which can use it. E.g. TomTom, iGO, Garmin, McGuider etc ...
also, try Google Maps, works nicely -> http://www.google.com/gmm/
To be more clear, GPS is automatically activated (and deactivated) by the software that uses it. You don't need to worry about it.

pedmond is right...
but first you have to go to Settings - > External GPS and make sure the COM port that you set there matches the one you set in your software...
it can be managed automatically but I hate automatic stuff.
Alternative app?
Thanks, guys - you are GOLD. Got it working now - in Google Maps. Any suggestions for an alternative GPS app? - TomTom, IGo, Garmin, Route 66? What's best?
I would prefer:
1. Automatic updating of map data.
2. Local download of map data to internal storage.
3. Good and updated European coverage.
Thx.

Am I missing something?
happyguy82 was perfectly right that you have to make sure that you know the com port in external GPS. Anyone trying to get TomTom 6 working knows this for a fact.
Unless of course you were being sarcastic and the forum hasn't put that across?
From the Manual:
"External GPS: Set the appropriate GPS communication ports, if required.
You may need to do this when there are programs on your device that
access GPS data or you have connected a GPS receiver to your device."
sorry if i am wrong, but i think external GPS settings are for an external gps and not the built in. i never touched this settings except when i had an ETEN with a defective gps and i used an external one. right now my GPS hardware port is set to (none) and my iGO8 works just fine with the port it autodetected. tom tom needs special settings for this? sorry didn't know and i fail to see why......
really, sometimes is a good idea to read the manual

A2. Possible with Garmin Mobile XT. I use Garmin and the beauty of it is that everytime I flash a ROM, once all the extras are loaded and the Diamond starts up, I get auto-prompted if I want to install Garmin, then agree to the license and it's done! No need to install CABs again or run Mapsource or anything! One thing I still haven't figured out is how to back-up my custom locations so I can reload them after flashing.
Installing TomTom, iGO
Ok, i need some serious help when it comes to installing TomTom, iGo or any other of these GPS apps. All the readme: s say you're suppose to copy the folders to your SD card, but obviously the Diamond uses internal memory, so this can't be done. I've tried plugging in the Diamond to my computer, choosing "storage card" instead of ActiveSync, and copying the iGo folder into the program files directory of the internalmemory. But nothing happens. Even if I open the iGo .exe from the Diamond itself later on. So again, can someone please tell me how to install one of these things?

Here I compiled list of question and answer about using TomTom 6 with the HTC Kaiser. Forum Mods, if this is good enough, please make it sticky topic.
*** Which version of TomTom is in the Application CD?
6.032 (8351) - as of September 15, 2007
*** Is that full version or trial version?
It is called TomTom Taster Edition and It is full version, it will not expired, and there is no feature limitation compared to retail version.
*** Is it installed in the ROM by default?
No, it is not. You need to manually install it.
*** How to install it?
Connect to ActiveSync, from the HTC Kaiser Application CD, launch:
Installer_Kaiser_ttn_6_032_8351_HTC_WWE_20070716.EXE
*** I dont have that executable file in my HTC Kaiser Application CD!
Yes, you are not alone, probably you purchased North America version.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=329957
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=327917&page=2
You can also download it here:
http://rapidshare.com/files/56585274/6_032_8351.rar (this link might not be permanent)
Or here (.CAB):
http://www.sendspace.com/file/9379xf (this link might not be permanent)
*** I have TomTom 6.030 (or prior version), what's the main difference?
6.032 has "Built-in Internal GPS" setting and the HTC Kaiser also have one.
*** Can I use/install other maps?
Yes you can. You can purchase additional maps (maps only), and then activate it.
*** Warning! Do not change the external GPS setting!
You should see "external GPS" icon in the Settings->System, do not change anything there.
You might need to hard-reset your device, more info:
http://www.modaco.com/word-warning-re-GPS-se-t258943.html
*** How can I use my own TomTom software?
So, you do not want to use TomTom from the Application CD.
Basically, you just need to install your own TomTom software and use this setting for the GPS:
- Other NMEA GPS receiver
- GPS baud rate = 4800
- GPS is connected to COM4:
For detailed information, check out here:
http://www.modaco.com/TomTom-Kaiser-t256790.html
*** How good is the internal GPS? Any problems?
From my own experience, it is working fine. Signal strength may vary and it depends on the situation (cloudy, clear sky, surounding area, buildings, etc.).
On average, I got satellite fix around 30 - 60 seconds.
However, some people experienced problems which you can follow here:
http://www.modaco.com/GPS-positioning-problems-t259285.html
Paul from MoDaCo.com, reported a bug
"The GPS bug seems to occur with some applications whereby the GPS 'data stream' will pause for a few seconds at a time, which makes some apps think the GPS has gone away (e.g. Google Maps) and other apps just update in sudden jumps rather than smoothly."
http://www.modaco.com/Paul-Reviews-HTC-P45-t256569.html
But, I think that problem is intermittent (randomly occur).
*** How about TomTom PLUS service?
Check out here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=328444
*** TomTom always start with NO SOUND, why?
It's a bug, you have to switch off the data connection before starting TomTom.
SIMPLE FIX: Roll the volume wheel and sound turns on.
Thanks to all XDA-Dev users, Paul and other users from MoDaCo.com
Feel free to add more information in here
I added this thread to the wiki.
The above is all good info.
However, if you are having problems do not believe that the above is the only setup that will work.
I happen to use a bluetooth setup from time to time and have used the external GPS settings without problems.
A working setup for me for intermal GPS uses Other NMEA on COM 9 at a Baud Rate of 19200. In the Tomtom settings.
All other GPS programmes I use are set to COM9
When I setup the bluetooth I have it set to:
Serial Port (ticked)
Outgoing Port COM 9
Authentication (unchecked)
External GPS (in System menu)
(Perform a full backup before changes here - due to reports that changes here may ruin the GPS connection requiring a hard-reset to get it going again)
GPS Programme Port COM9
Hardware (None)
Access (Manage GPS automatically - ticked)
By the way the basic freeware plotting applications I use DO NOT require the clumsy workaround of starting tomtom in order to open the internal GPS. That problem seems to be limited to an issue with Google Maps.
NB
Other ports will work - eg COM0 but you must ensure that for example if you set outgoing port in bluetooth (if you also use BT GPS) to COM0 then it will also be COM0 in tomtom or any other GPS software. Any mismatch and you'll wait forever!
NB
In the tomtom satellite screen (the one that shows aseries of columns for each satellite - there is a useful verbal comment at the top of the screen it will say one of three things:
1
No GPS Device - (always says this initially for 2/3 seconds. If things are set correctly it will move to 2 but if your ports are wrongly set it will stay on this)
2
No Valid GPS Signal - (means it has found internal GPS device and is trying to find satellites - anything from 2 or 3 seconds to couple of minutes if you have not used Quick GPS, it will then move to 3 if you are in range of satellites)
3
Other NMEA GPS Receiver - (says this when locked on to satellites and working correctly)
The above 3 steps are useful to just check whether the setup and port is correct. Even if you do not want to use tomtom it's worth running it at least once just to iron out any port problems.

There is no "internal GPS" icon in the "Settings", only "external GPS"
And dont mess around with the "external GPS", you might need to hard-reset.
TomTom 6.032 has its own setting to use the "internal GPS".

I agree. I wanted say is the only version capable to tune internal GPS from Tom Tom program. I know versions 6, 6.02 and 6.03 works with othen NMEA and port 4, but my impresion is with internal get satellites faster.

Anyone get a wrong rom error when installing 6.032? UK T-Mob.
Yes me too
As I understood, the T-Mobile version does not have TomTom Taster edition included in the application CD, correct???
If that's the case, I am afraid that the TomTom 6.032 from the HTC Kaiser "unlocked" version is a special build only for that unlocked model.
Just use 6.030, it works fine (read in the FAQ).
Yeah i guess if the rom numbers dont match up, it wont let you install. Not on Taster CD.

I found another FREE app.
Nokia is giving away for FREE a GPS software that makes possible something that even Google Maps can't: off-line mapping with use of GPS. Online mapping is not a big deal because Google, Yahoo, Microsoft and others offer it too, but with smart2go you can use GPS in combination with maps even when you are not connected to the Internet!
Here's the link to the review. From there, you can go to the site......
http://msmobiles.com/news.php/7180.html
Tested this on the N95 today and it was great, installed it on my Kaiser and it works well
I think this is much better than google maps. Gps located my location very quickly. Navigation is smooth and accurate(I think navigation lasts 3 days, I think). Very Nice me think
Thank you very much. Although I have a navigation software these cards are often better for walkers. That's why I installed Google Maps. Now I don't have to stress my free data volume so far.
I just wanted to Bump this. This is software is very handy, and FREE, and I didn't want it to get lost. Guys, you really need to try it!!!

you use your Wifi connection to download maps of the area you will going to, then, your phone uses it's GPS with the maps d/l'ed.
So am I correct in saying that as you surf the map using wifi etc. it stores the data on your SD card and uses it when you need it. So lets say you live in Louisiana, you can surf the whole state while on wifi or a router etc.. and it will store the map for later use??? is this correct???
seems like it still needs a data connection?
if youre driving, how can it use wifi if you cant connect to an access point?
that must mean it cannot download the map?
1. I go to ... http://www.smart2go.com/en/download/
2. select "Via PC"
3. all i am seeing is bunch of NOKIA softwares
the question is ... which particular model should we download for HTC? I selected the E95 model and I notice the file extension is slightly different, is "File: nokia_maps_1_0_upgrade_ROM.sis" instead *.CAB
any advise? thanks in advance.
It said to download the "Generic" one, that's what I did.
I am just not clear on down loading the map data!
so is this better than TomTom????
EDIT: never mind
"...although you can't do navigation (route calculation) for FREE with this program (Nokia demands money for that), you can however use it as a FREE map with GPS support!"
I have read a little more, will try downloading the map app

It's right there. The first option on that list is "Generic: Windows Mobile 5 Phone Edition".
And they also say: "Is your device not listed? Please choose the generic version for any unlisted devices that use Windows Mobile".
ok, I there has to be away to download a complete map instead of surfing the states to get some mapping data?????
Also were doesit store all its data?? I will look in the SD card.
Yes you can download the mapping data to your SD Card.
Use the mapping tool provided on the website.
You need to edit the qf file using notepad to say 1.3 rather than 1.1 or you cant do it.
I am downloading it now, and hopefully it is more accurate than google maps! BTW, is there any other gps software that i can use with my tilt??
Thanks.
Crap, i downloaded the generic version and i did not install on my Tilt. Any help??!!
so this is the only software that lets you use GPS without being connected to the internet?
i have the t-zone plan. it's probably too slow to use google maps gps right? or how does it work.. does it download ALL the directions at once, so that i would have to wait only 1-2 minutes max for each set of directions? or does it obtain the information right before i have ot make a turn and such?
Hi guys... anyone played with the application http://www.mgmaps.com/ and actually got it to work with the internal GPS unit?
I've tried, but all I get is "GPS functionality not available on this phone".
Took a look on their support forum, and lots of others seem to be having difficulty getting this baby to recognize internal GPS units.
So,,, just thought I'd ask the experts...
/drt
They have a page that talks about how to fully set it up on a Windows Mobile device.
http://www.mgmaps.com/winset/
Look at step 13. "If you have an internal GPS on WM6, you can assign a virtual serial port to it with this GPSID Configuration utility." They link to a .CAB that you can download.
Try that.

Thanks for the idea, but it doesn't seem to make any difference. No mater what I set the ports to, I get the same message. Do you have settings which work?
i dont get it, why not just install the free google maps software?
Because it is software that amazingly can access arieal photos from many different sources, also sets up a storage for maps so you can use them offline and reload then instead of downloading the images everytime you start google maps. I am working on this and will post as soon as I have an answer.

the internal 4GB memory in the Diamond is identified as a "Storage Device" so it shouldnt be a problem.
IGO 8 crash with Diamond...Look HERE

You can run iGo8 only from the original SD-card (copy protection)!!!
It is not possible to copy the files an run it from another SD-Card.
So it will not be possible to use it on the diamond.

its not the hardware manufactor's fault that the software developer cannot write a piece of software to function without a microSD card.

What did you mean by crashes? I have a touch diamond and i have tried to install a version on my device.
What I have done is placed the two folders iGO8 and 2577 folders into the inboard storage of my phone I have then unplugged the phone from the data cable and it then asks me if i want to install iGO, i click yes and it installs, through the instalation, it asks me a unknown publisher wants to acces something, i just click yes, the installation ends up finishing and the program tries to load, then bang nothing, it just goes to the menu screen i was previously on, I then try to access the program through the start menu and programs folder, it tries to execute but then just stops. nothing happens. I have also tried the same thing after a soft reset.
is nthis the kind of issue you were having ?

I have got the above instructions from a different site, but since the Diamond does not have a Storage Card, where I am supposed to install the Garmin app?
I have tried installing to the 4GB internal storage but it's not showing up during the installation as a storage destination. If it's not an option, will it eat up a lot of my valuable storage if I install to the phone default storage?
Also are there any alternative FREE GPS navigation software available for WM6 that worth checking out? This is my first GPS enabled mobile phone and I am anxious to try it out.
I am sorry if this has been answered before, but I have tried to search for an answer to this but not found any.
You install it to "Internal Storage" but that will be obvious because this is the only choice the garminxt install will give you.
I've been playing with GarminXT and so far I prefere it over TomTom.
So how memory would I have left with after installing the main application, the support files and the maps ? I wish if there a way to install to 4GB internal storage instead if using the default phone storage.
Internal storage is the 4GB. Depending on the maps you have... I have a full install of worldwide base + support files + detailed Canada takes up about 200mb... where I have TomTom I can't just chose detailed canada its all of NA or nothing and it takes up 1.4GB.
Go to Device Settings -> Connections -> USB to PC
Once you are inside here, select "Disk Drive (Faster File Transfer)" and also "Ask about connection type when I connect"
This way, when you connect your device to the PC, you can choose wether to enable ActiveSync or Disk mode.
For this specific case, to install Garmin, choose "Disk mode"...this emulates a removable storage on your PC, and then Garmin will detect this.
This is how I've done it, and worked 100%.

Thank you for this tip. This is what I was looking for. Will try it out once I am back home.
Ok I have managed to get Garmin successfully installed in my Diamond However when I installed the files using the 'disk mode' option, I had to disconnect the the USB cable to complete the software installation in my phone as it did not prompt me for any additional steps in the phone when the USB cable is still connected.
Anyways, thank you all for your assistance. I am glad to have found this resourceful forum.

When the phone is in disk mode the phone itself is not able to see the internal memory. This prevents you from possible locking of files by the phone while trying to manipulate via PC.
Activesync works just as fast as disk mode, it is the phone's usb speed that makes the difference with the diamond.
oke Garmin is installed. But I like to install the maps. But have some problem with the devicecode

In Garmin go to settings / about - you will see your Card ID number (internal storage) if it's what you are looking for ... other device IDs are also listed.

Ok, probably an easy one this, but I've installed Mobile XT on my diamond but when I fire it up it tries to look for a bluetooth GPS reciever. How do I tell it to use the built in unit on the diamond?? Thanks

Settings - System
Remote GPS
Hit Enable
Hopefully that should work
Enable?
I have the same problem
Could you be a little more precise about "Hit Enable"?
I don't have that setting under Settings-System in-Remote GPS
And shouldn't it be a setting somewhere inside the Garmin application since there is no problem using Tomtom with the internal GPS?
But in Garmin I canĀ“t find anywhere to change GPS-settings and when I go into the settings about gps in Garmin it starts looking for a bluetooth gps right away with no possibillity to change.
When I said - SETTINGS, SYSTEM
I meant the ones in the GARMIN APPLICATION!

You need to unlock your GPS or rather the Garmin XT software for it to work with your internal GPS. You do this by using JetMouse Keygen 1.3 (or 1.5) and pasting the generated code based on your Device ID (explained in a previous post where to find that) into a txt file called sw.unl (note pls make sure that the .txt extension is changed to .unl) to be placed into your garmin folder. For JM just google for it.

OK Thanks.
I suppose if I had been more patient and read all of the threads more thorough, I should have discovered that.
When I saw your answer I recognized it but couldn't make the connection to my problem.
Sorry all, for repeating things that I most certainly should have been able to have found in earlier threads, but never the less many thanks for the input.
