when is 3g gonna come to LA? - Wing, P4350 Herald Upgrading

patiently waiting

Soon but it doesn't matter the Wing won't support 3g. You will need a whole new device.

Doh! What is tmob offering now?

We will have to wait and see what HTC phones T-Mobile will be rolling out with the requisite 1700 MHz band required for T-Mobile USA's 3G deployment.
The latest rumor is that the HTC Touch Diamond will be the first HTC phone capable of schlepping in the US.

i just wanna know how long its going to be before los angeles actually can access 3g capable devices

Diamond & ATT

I couldn't help myself. This phone seems perfect so i ordered a diamond that will arrive tommorow. Now my question is if anyone thinks the bands for US are present and need to be unlocked or if this will end up on ebay . Thanks!
There's several topics about it there.
You won't get any 3G in the US with it, and you'll only be able to use the 1900 band for voice/GPRS/EDGE.
Actually you are incorrect. 1900 Mhz is supported w/3G w/AT&T in certain areas. Unfortunately my Diamond is not even getting an EDGE connection. From what I am hearing the Diamond is only supporting 2100Mhz frequency w/3G according to HTC. Which to me makes no sense.. I am blogging my experience with it as it is the first production unit in the USA.
You just said i was incorrect and correct in the same paragraph lol
This is where all the confusion starts.. For GSM/GPRS/EDGE it does 900/1800/1900 MHz - only 1900 would work in the US. For UMTS (3G) it only does 900/2100 - neither of these frequencies are used in the US.
The protocols and modulation used are completly different for GSM/GPRS/EDGE vs UMTS. The dispersal of uplink and downlink frequencies is completly different. Just because it can do 1900 for GSM doesnt mean it should do 1900 UMTS.

You should get edge. Edge is an extention of GPRS but requires a different BTS (radio tower) setup. Its possible you don't have a strong enough signal, but it sounds like your confident you should have edge in that area.
The only thing i can suggest it to try in a different area - like the centre of town. Also, confirm your APN is setup corectly, the [G] may just be telling you GPRS is available, but not that you can attach.
I know with my elfin it takes a little stronger signal to initiate the Edge icon the first time (ie. after a hard reset). I can't get an edge signal inside my office but once I walk outside for a minute or two, bam I have it. Then when I go inside I still have it.

Diamond had UMTS(2100)+GSM(900+1800),UMTS(850+1900)+GSM(850+1900),UMTS(800+2100),UMTS(850+2100)+GSM(900+1800),UMTS(850)+GSM(900+1800) and UMTS(1700) depend what rom you had in your Diamond and where you bought your Diamond , At&T should be show 3G in US and T-mobile used 3G (1700 Mhz) in New York area
The platform in the phone can support all those bands, so you might be able to see them (like in the test rom) but the antennas are not there. So you won't actually be able to pick up a signal.

I guess all of us US early adopters must hope the hardware is there and can be enabled with a future flash.
T-mobile in the US uses 1900mhz for GSM/Edge and only has 3g in NYC, so I'm figuring that it's a cool stop-gap device until something is available for T-mobile 3G.
so anyone have the rom that had thoose bands....
confused
so im a little confused.... If I buy a diamond on ebay, it wont work in the US? or 3g just wont work? does the diamond accept a sim card?
On AT&T it will give you only GPRS! On Tmobile (NEW) it shows EDGE!! I dont understand this at all!

Voice and EDGE will work just fine as long as you are in a major area that uses 1900 band. You might have weak or no signal when you are in smaller rural areas since those usually extend into the 850 band.
You will not be able to use 3G since the Diamond only supports 900/2100, neither of which are used by AT&T
It looks like if you have ATT you are hosed for both voice and data, as most of ATT voice and data (Edge) is 850mhz. Most if not all of T-mobile voice-data-Edge is 1900mhz so you will have at least Edge. If you're looking for 3g data you're SOL until the US version of the diamond is released.

We will get the diamond, have to wait for the US version that does the different bands.... wich leads me to my next question. What carrier do you think will get the diamond??? AT&T seems to get all the cool stuff.

I don't think HTC cares about America too much any more because it's iPhone territory. As they haven't used their own branding until recently, I think HTC are looking to gain market control and loyalty, and that's easiest where the iPhone hasn't been a huge success.

Again, HTC seem to like doing exactly what Apple are not doing, so they may go for multiple carriers. As far as I'm aware the Touch Diamond, and its branded versions, are launching on every network in the UK. That's the complete opposite of Apple's 'one network per country' policy, and they consequently seem to have dropped it (for example, in Italy).
AGREED 100%!! I have been saying this on my podcast for quite a while.. It is a huge mistake. I am now saying since I just received my Diamond that I took one for the team.. I will post my review as the days go by...

[Q] Did we just buy a lemon? If this ATT merge happens, Are we without a service?

Question now, we all just adopted the DS7, Got T-Mobile service, nice 40$ plan. But as ATT stated now, T-Mobile customers with 3G devices would have to upgrade.
Which means all our good reasons for getting the Tablet (even tho rooting and custom roms will keep things nice..) we wouldnt have the network service we wanted and needed for this expanding line of Android and games or online abilities.
So did we just buy a lemon? Your thoughts?

The change is done in a timely manner, meaning that you have at least a year or two until this changes are complete. Maybe then you are curently running a new version of android and probably in a new tablet

The dell streak 7 supports 850mhz and 1900mhz wcdma/hspa+. At&t's current 3g/4g bands. Even if they turn off aws hspa+ coverage, it will still be able to hop on to the at&t 3g/hspa+ network.

Doubtful.. If I am still using my G1 after 2 years nice and rooted.. Even have my HD2 modded..
Im the type that wants a device for 3 years before I replace. I used a 3650, N-Gage QD and a 6630 for ages.. but least those were same OS and so, so all I did was upgrade the same type of device.
G1. Only real upgrade was the G2. That and Im looking at Xperia Play which would be a ok replacement for my likes.
Btw anyone know if the Streak 7 can do the 4G on ATT or if it can do the 3G?
2G Network GSM 850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz
3G Network 850, 1700/2100, 1900, 2100 MHz
Which suggests that it could work with ATTs bands.. I rem ATT talking about switching 3g to the 850 band as it was. So if we DS7 users are secure in the 3g/4g band, we are ok. (What "Band" is 4G anyways if there is? Or is it LTE?)
Well well, Guess it is for both carriers.
http://www.slashgear.com/dell-streak-7-clears-fcc-with-att-and-t-mobile-3g-27121279/
Which ok least THATS good. A Unlimited 40$ contract and able to use the DS7 still.. Ok thats good.
This is the best news I have heard all day...

[Q] Will unlocked T-Mobile HTC 8X work on AT&T?

Here is the spec sheet: http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/Phones/cell-phone-detail.aspx?cell-phone=Windows-Phone-8X-by-HTC
I don't know the carrier standards very well. After I unlock it, will it work on AT&T and will I get full speed data?
Thanks in advance,

Looks like the T-Mobile version does not have LTE, so that will not work.
UTMS [3G] HSPA(+) [3.5G] should work as the T-mobile version has the same bands as the AT&T version.

The AT&T model seems to lack the 1700 band T-Mobile uses, although all the rest of the frequency are present, and will most likely to work with T-Mobile's upcoming LTE network. If in your area, T-Mobile uses the 1700Mhz frequency, you will have a problem.

I'm going to buy the AT&T model since it has LTE (and is $100 cheaper). It's just a dev phone so it's not the end of the world if I don't get 3G. I'll post here how it goes.

Barry,
You probably bought your phone by now. For whatever it's worth, I just checked with HTC about Developer Edition of the "One" and although it lists all the frequencies in the spec sheet, they said it will only get 2G speeds on the T-Mobile network. Yes, that is 2G. Not 3G, not UMTS either, and of course no LTE. You might be better off with the AT&T version then. On the other hand, I just signed up with AT&T 4 months ago and have nothing but disconnects, dropped calls, garbled speech or no data whatsoever in my area. I have an HTC One X+. To me, it looks like they totally did an awesome job in marketing, when I was getting excellent reception and none of the above problems with T-Mobile. Again, it could be the area or AT&T's network.
I hope that helps.
Take care,
MW

thread title... my sprint epic 4g touch jsut broke and im still 2 months away from ending contract... planning to buy the unlocked htc one, use it on sprint for a while then switch to the 30$ t-mobile prepaid plan... will it work for both carriers?
sorry for the noob question, i know this kind of question gets ridiculed but just want to really make sure
No on Sprint. Yes on T-Mobile. However on T-Mobile you will not get HSPA+ unless you are on a refarmed area. You will get LTE when T-Mobile rolls it out in your area.

awesome, thanks for the quick reply. it seems like i am in a refarmed area (i checked airport.de and my area seems to have an abundance of dots) so it should be fine. Guess I'll just sit around for a bit with my old dumb CDMA htc hero and wait for now I guess!

I'm not sure what difference there is except for cid
I personally think it would be better to make it into an international version for timely updates.... I've been wanting to do this as well...

I don't live in the refarmed area so I only get edge, I can travel a mile and get HSPA+ though but I want something that is consistent. Not just random 4G in one corner of my house and Edge everywhere else

Nope, when T-Mobile rolled it out they skipped Jacksonville Florida
All one versions have the same hadware! It's just a matter of enabling/disabling a certain radio in the device

That's what I thought I read elsewhere
what he said above. TMO versions can pick up 3G AWS since most of their network is on that band. ATT doesnt use that band only 1900 for 3G, but since TMO has only started refarming old 2G 1900mhz signal to 3G signal only certain places will recieve 3G signal for TMO on the ATT HTC one.
So far i havent heard of anyone breaking into the radio portions and adjusting the bands. i think people are still a bit sketchy on whether that will work or not. its a pretty big gamble.
your best option is maybe find someone who has the TMO version and wants an international version. and trade?
I have the AT&T One. T-Mobile was sold out and I wanted it the day it was released so I just bought the AT&T One at Best Buy. I have AT&T LTE but I was wanting to use T-Mobile because I have unlimited on that line. I never get 3G though, only HSPA which is weird, or maybe not idk
