I've had my tilt for a few weeks now and not yet have I seen the 3G or H icon pop up on my screen. Instead I'm always connected to the Edge network. I've tried installing a different radio to it, but all that did was make my phone load up to the point where its should get to the windows mobile screen then the screen would go black. I've used kaiser tweaks to enable hsdpa but still no luck. The only time i've seen the 3G icon is when i don't have a good signal and it'll show 3G for like to seconds and then it'll show I have no service. Then come back as Edge. Does anybody have a suggestion for me?

Do you have 3G coverage where you are. Where I live outside of Boston, I never get 3G or H but when I drive to Boston it does show.
Also sometimes it is just a bad sim card.
you will probably find there is no 3g coverage in your area

Are you sure it's not just the 'G' icon?

I believe this is most likely the case.
yeah i get that sometimes im on 3g when im walking around the block and then once i get to a curtain neighborhood i loss service for a few sec it comes back and im on the edge
Even just a quick look at an AT&T coverage map shows that maybe about 10% of the USA network even has 3G coverage. And it can, as mentioned, be very spotty even within some of the mapped coverage areas.
3g coverage isnt just dependant on availibility in the area, it also depends on the surrounding area eg if you live at the bottom of a hill, tall buildings even builing materials used can prevent signal

A friend of mine just purchased the Kaiser to be used on the at&t network. He lives in a 3G area in the USA and for some reason, his phone will not hold the 3G connection. It wants to switch to Edge. Is there a manual setting to stop this from happening or a new utility to enable/disable certain connection. Is this normal for 3G to do this. Any information I can pass on would be greatful.
Thanks
I think it's an indication that 2G is stronger than 3G in your area. My Kaiser always hold 3G connection all the time where I live. You can "manually" force 3G. Here is one the many ways to do it: on Windows Start menu, go to "Setting" then "Phone" (on the "Personal" tab), click "Band" tab, then use "WCDMA" for network type selection (default is "Auto")
Thanks for the help. I'll pass it on.
While the Kaiser is my first ppc type phone and I cannot claim to be expert I do think that this is a normal reaction of the phone to what networks are available.
I live in San Jose Ca. and must, perchance, move up and down the peninsula in the normal course of work and life.
I see my Kaiser switching from Edge to 3G to unnamed all up and down the peninsula. It is best for 3G in the cities and worse up in the hills -as one might expect. I also get the best 3G connections in the evenings and night vs. the daytime when, I assume, more 3G users are taking up bandwidth.
It is unfortunate that where I live is an Edge (during the daytime) area though I am paying for the 3G data plan.
3G issues with the TyTnII
Hello all:
I post on the AT&T HTC forumn and had this thread sent to me by another poster there.
I also have a TyTnII newly aquired from MobilePlanet on Weds. I am having the same issues with 3G. It briefly flashed the G icon on boot up then switches to Edge with all 5 bars. I've tried the manual mode fix, no luck. The wcdma gets no signal and the gsm goes back up to 5 bars same as auto.
Then theres the inability to register my serial # on HTC's EU site. Says SN is invalid... MP has had several reports of EU devices doing this.
I'm in the US, NorthEast NJ area. And in the middle of a known 3G area.
Bill
Can anyone help Bill out? How many of you CAN use 3G on the USA at&t network without a problem? He's trying to see if it's a setting issue or a phone issue. I'm not in a 3G area so I can't help him here.
Thanks

I get a 3g signal when I go into Philly (I live about 45 minutes outside the city) It holds it just fine as well. Is it possible you just have weak 3g coverage where you are? I actually shut off the 3g on my phone as I have no 3g coverage at work or at home and the 3g connection discharges the battery in a hury.
I'm on AT&T as well.
Oh - BTW - I also can't register my phone with the eClub either. I sent an Email to the HTC Webmaster but have not had any reply in 3 days. I'm not too confident in HTC's support.
I just got my Tilt last night, then called ATT and had the IMEI put in and made sure to ask that 3G is enabled.
However, I'm in my classroom in NYC right now, and all I get is an "E" above my bars, which I assume means edge. I have 3G turned on in comm manager, why am I not getting it?
I'm running dutty's touchflo rom for tilt beta, also i just ran a speedtest and it was 119kbps down so definitely not 3G, how can i fix this?

It depends if there is 3G available in "that side of town"
Yes I've checked the coverage viewer, I mean I'm right in NYC and 3G was always active on my Helio Ocean when I had it.
When I am not actively using the deivce for transferring data, it seems to "fall back" to Edge. -Then when I transfer data I'll see the 3G or H icon to indicate a better / faster connection.
I am wondering if this isn't the desired funtionality to save power? -I have read in many many places that Edge is much more battery friendly than 3G and / or HSDPA

Where are u in NYC? Cross street? Area?
Im in mid-town with full 3G.
Also, if I'm not mistaken Helio runs on one of the CDMA networks(Sprint/Verizon), so having 3G on your Ocean wont necessarily mean that you'll have it on your Tilt.
Before, indicator (G, E, 3G or H) show 3G and then phone make data call its shows H, but form today morning its stay H all the time
Any ideas?
p.s.
Im using new att rom 1.62
Chances are, your area has been upgraded to HSDPA coverage. My was a few months ago (NYC)

Thats correct. My icon is also on H now all time. (PHL)
Philly area
I live in this metro area myself. The H icon does mean HSDPA however you can set this off using Kaisertweak. Once you're phone resets it should go back to 3G icon. If you want to me more technical with switching bands, you can use the newer comm manager and advaned config to add a 3G on/off button for toggling between edge and 3G. Remember HSDPA is a faster form of 3G, the 3G icon just refers to the slower form of it which once was a default until the recent upgrade.
very wierd...i always have 3G turned off....so I'm always on EDGE...tonight i opened up the comm manager and turned 3G back on...now i have H at all times....
But! with the H or the 3G i get less signal strenght....on Edge i get full everywhere

EDGE data coverage is from the GSM side of the network.
The H is from the 3G side of the network. The technologies are different, and so is the coverage. The footprints are not exactly the same.
However, with 3G... you only need 1-2 bar to be able to place/receive phone calls. Voice quality should be reasonable.
Just an FYI.
oh...so what should i leave?
the EDGE or the H?
i dont have a data plan if that even matters
How do they fair up for battery life?
I hear that 3G uses less battery than EDGE does...is this true?
What about HSDPA?
Um, no you've got that backwards. Edge uses MUCH less battery than 3G and way less than HSDPA.
If you don't use data, stick with Edge.
but the H icon makes me feel special

PDX area just switched over to HSDPA a few days ago - I'm so happy!
To make things even better, then guy in the store dropped my plan down to $30 a month (no txt messages) which was unavailable when I first bought the phone! Sweet Deal!
well,
I kinda live in between 2 different towers one 3g other 2g. on one side of my town and on on the other. i am dead between them. well i get 2 bars on 3g which i use with my laptop but sometimes it connects to the other tower which is 2g with 2 bars. Living with gentoo on a edge connection is just no fun. but is there any way i can select which tower i would rather use over the other?

I've attached a program called nodata, try that!
thanks friend i will give it a try now.
well bud, i can see this would be a great app during roaming but from what i can see it only disables the connection and does not allow me to select 3g only or possibly "3g preferred" type of a option. i mean i get a good 3g connection and don't really understand why it switches to edge. when i open up google maps the "my location" switch when i change to edge to one side of the town and 3g i am on the other side of town but both 1700m shades over lap right on house. i am just asking is there i a way i can connect just to the tower on " 1st&foo st and not the tower that is on 10th st&foo st"
did you try the band page in the phone options (hit call button then right softkey then options then band page) and select WCDMA instead of Auto in the first drop down box? That forces 3g and doesnt allow edge
im kinda in the same boat when im at my pc it always used to switch between edge and 3g (2 bars too) so i just did that and yah sometimes i dont get any service where i would get an edge connection but its worth it because i download alot and alot of places like rapidshare if your downloading and it switches from 2g to 3g or vice versa your connection is broken and the dl stops and cant be resumes because of the slotted dloads for free users so it works for me
Hi guys as the title says I never receive any 3G, HSDPA, or EDGE connection on my O2 XDA Ignito...only thing I connect with is GPRS/GSM (i.e. the G icon shows in the taskbar)
I know I've turned off HSDPA connection in the menu, but why do I never get any 3G or EDGE connections?? I'm on the Orange UK and T-Mobile UK network...tried both and none give me anything except GPRS.
Anyone know what the issue might be? Could it be a hardware problem or is it more likely to do with the settings?
Cheers
have you considered the fact you dont live in a 3G area lol

lol yes but its not just my area...you can't be telling me I don't get any 3G throughout london city...?? I've also checked the orange and t-mobile website and they do have coverage in my area.
isnt it turned off?
Get navdavi commmanager and you can turn 3g on / off with it.
I think there is an option in settings somewhere too.
Turning off 3g turns off Edge/HSDPA too.
