iv just downloaded the latest tomtom, and its put a badge/icon on my today screen. AFAIK it doesnt actually do anything, it cant be clicked on or selected, and as a result id like to get rid of it.
iv tried going through the Tomtom settings, checking the today\items and deleting it from the registry under software\microsoft\todays\items but none of it gets rid of it.
Does anyone have a way of doing it?
cheers
You need to *uncheck* the Tomtom box in the today screen options and that icon will then only be accessible from the start menu. Thats what I did with my TyTN II and it works perfectly. If the box is checked you'll get that icon on the today screen.
BTW, if you're using the recently released HTC WM 6.1 update with HTCs Navigator 6.032 are you finding GPS performance to be much worse than before the upgrade (slow fixes and wild fluctuations in GPS reception bars even when stationary)?
thanks for the reply, ill give it a go.
Im a new tom tom & 6.1 user (just flashed one of duttys), so dont have any previous experience to compare it with, sorry.
I'm finding the Tom Tom (and other GPS apps) to be worse after the upgrade unfortunately - it's the only fault I can find with the new ROM. The problem for me is just the first fix after any soft reset - it always takes an age (up 10-15 minutes) which I'm sure wasn't the case before.
Subsequent fixes (after closing and later re-opening TT or another GPS program) are always much quicker, within 30 seconds even, so obviously once it's been initialised once it's fine, until the next soft reset when you're back to square one.

do you download the quickgps data after the soft reset, i believe that doesnt save when you do a soft reset, and the first lock you get from GPS, will be remembered and make it easier for the future connections.
I never have a problem with GPS connections, only tomtom and its poorly slow application refresh.
AFAIK it downloads in the background on a regular basis still, whenever I'm plugged into the PC at work (which is most of the working day) - whenever I check it, it always claims to be up to date, anyway. But I agree the behaviour is as if that data isn't there anymore... peculiar.

Although this part also applies to me, even after getting a fix, if I shut it down while I'm moving and start it up again after a couple of minutes its still much slower than it used to be in the same locations under WM 6.0
I'll email HTC and Tomtom about it as it's clear there's now a problem.

If you ever used HardSPL (or possibly even if you didn't) you probably need to flash the new HTC SPL - see the thread over in ROM development. It cured all the freezing issues for me.

I'm pretty sure it's an HTC issue, since I have the same problems using GPS in MS Live Search too. Unfortunately there's not much point in me emailing them, because mine is officially Vodafone branded and they don't support it.

Thanks for the tip. I'm the old school sort who believes the hardware provider should be responsible for fixing things, hence why I'll write when I get the time but I may try this later if I get annoyed enough! I've never installed HardSPL and this official HTC upgrade was the first flash I've subjected my TyTN II to.

In the end the buck stops with HTC and as they are responsible for my phone, I'll remember other branded users are also depending on a fix from them when I write.

Can you enlist the 'strange' things?
I gave up after tuma release
Yes what do you mean by strange things, current WM5 versions are pretty stable and fast, so could you be more specific?
Where to start. Freezing, hardware buttons not working, it dieing in the middle of something even though the battery is fine, the battery meter saying that your brand new genuine 02 battery is ticking down at 3% min but then turn it off and on and it is fine, turning itself on when it is in your pocket even though all the buttons are locked the list just keeps going.
It still works well as long as you keep fixing it. I have 60+ programs on it and when I try and back it up and then when I have to hard reset it and you try and restore it the thing won't do it. Then I spend the next 4 evenings getting it back the way I like it. I even had to reset 20 times once because it wouldn't start properly. I stopped using it for 2 weeks and they were so relaxing not having to keep fixing it I then went back to it and now I am about to get a Jasjam (Tytn) because I would like to get my life back. OK I have had my whinge now.
1. WMP10 is a disaster: crashes phone, shuffles around library items, etc
2. With Power off, keys/LCD become active despite Button Lock ON.
3. sometimes refuses to charge
4. Poor memory management (OOM errors, keeps too many apps open, etc)
5. Occasional hang
and i havent even used bluetooth and Wifi yet - a whole other can of worms, i'm sure. My phone has only 5 apps installed.
solutions:
1. TCMP -- seems ok so far
2. living with it
3. soft reset
4. i think related to WMP10 -- good so far
Well I know that even my Dad's IIs which has the same ROM as mine none of the hard ware buttons work and bluetooth won't turn on and off then to top all that off it won't do a hard reset!!!
Ok you guys stated a lot of issues, you wont believe me that they do not occur in my device(exclude WMP 10 it sucks), i haven't perform hard reset from more than a month and my device works smooth. Of course i had problems with previous releases of WM5, but now it is fine, and a lot more good than 2003se.
@PPCNUT, maybe you have hardware problems with your device
Well both devices have bad problems but it could be possible. It is just it seems ironic that my 6 year old HP Jornada 720 Handheld PC still works fine and never needs a reset and even runs faster and is more reliable than the IIS!! I have had a lot of PPCs and other mobile devices and I find the IIs the worst and it needs the most work just to keep it working. All this is just my observations and I am sure lots of Blueangels run WM5 fine.
Hi,
I got a TYTN 2 in Singapore recently. It worked fine for a few days, but now it is very sluggish in its response and also hangs frequently.
Any Tips/ Tricks/ Advice anyone?
Also my GPS doesnt seem to work either. I tried a program called MapKing that came with the CD and some other stuff from sites. Nothing is able to detect the GPS, setting is at COM4, 57600
Thanks in advance

My Tilt is having the same problem: it wasn't sluggish, but was hanging a few times a week, so I went ahead and flashed the HTC ROM. Almost immediately, it seemed more sluggish than it had before, and still hangs a few times a week (sometimes I actually have to pop out the battery to even restart it).
I'm sure that's a very vague description, so I'd be happy to provide any further information that might help.
Thanks!

Hey, to reset, i never popped the battery, i just removed the sim card slot lock, and it would turn off completely. Dont know tho, might be dangerous. Would you tell me which rom are you using? Is it Helmi_Kaiser_1.57.00.02BigStorage_AKU.0.7.0.Cooked.exe ? I am thinking of using this one now.

Mine encounter lag every now and then. especially evident when using opera to surf. Screen will just freeze and have to wait a few seconds before I can do anything.

I've never tried to reset by unlocking the sim card - can anyone confirm that that's a safe, easier way to reset? Either way, I'd rather not have to reset at all.
Anyway, I'm using the ROM with the filename: "RUU_Kaiser_HTC_WWE_1.56.405.5_radio_sign_22.45.88.07_1.27.12.11_Ship.exe"
I don't know much about ROMs, and that's the only one I found easily in the forums. Maybe it's a bad ROM, which would explain performance poorer than that of the original Tilt ROM. Can anyone recommend a better ROM?
Fixed?
Just to catch up here:
I've been using dutty's ROMs for a few weeks, and the device is much more responsive. I still have occassional hangs, but I can usually soft reset - maybe once every week or two I get a hard hang that requires me to remove the battery.
Currently using: Dutty's NewBuild Rom N0.6 +NETCF 3.5 AT&T.zip
Awesome ROM!
i have the same hanging as described above ... screen doesn't react. effects typing on the keyboard also ... i hope this can be fixed by new roms or by some fix. I am trying to figure out what is causing this since it doesnt happen all the time. say when i am playing solitaire for an hour it runs great, when typing an email it gets bad again...
anyone had any similar experiences ?
update: going to try dutty's rom as suggested above will see how it goes
ok, so after a few days with dutty's rom no.6 my device seems fine with exactly the same programs installed. my guess is either it was caused due to using an at&t rom including the radio on a kaiser or some problem with the custel 2.0 rom (and probably a few others).
hope this helps someone ...
I've had a T Mobile MDA Vario III for a few months and the GPS has been consistently rock solid. Fixed in seconds after I installed TomTom and every time since. Unfortunately with the stock ROM the GPS was the only thing that was rock solid, everything else was slow, unstable and flakey. So I flashed Dutty's latest ROM which is fantastic, it's so fast and stable it's like I have a brand new phone all of a sudden. The only problem is the GPS performance is all of a sudden a bit ropey. I finally managed to get it to fix after changing the Radio ROM from 1.64.08.21 to 1.64.06.04 and hard resetting. That was this morning. I checked it a couple of times during the day and still it was OK. But I tried again just now and it can't get a fix, it's just sitting there on the window sill with one or two red bars in GPS tool. Does anyone have a clue about this one? It's obviously not a hardware problem since it was fine before I flashed the ROM. QuickGPS is up to date.
Thanks for any help.

It does also appear to me as if Dutty's latest WM61 ROM needs way more time for a GPS fix (several minutes), compared to the original WM60 versions I've tested (much less than 1 minute, in any case). Can't tell why.
Buster
I have the same problem. T-Mobile Netherlands MDA. Stock WM5 was crap beyond comparison, but GPS fix was ok. Now flashed on the B&B 4.3 several months ago. Love that ROM, but GPS fix time went down the drain. It now takes 10 minutes sometimes, while driving around. Remaining at one location speeds up the fix, but still up to 5 minutes. QuickGPS is always kept up to date. Doesn't seem to help at all. When I've recently used GPS, it always fixes in no time when I start up the TomTom 6.
same problems there, with Dutty's latest rom and Radio 1.64.08.21
With tomtom 6.032, 10 minutes to fix after a reboot (softreset or shutdown)
When tomtom have fix it once, next fix will be fast...strange...
My Vario III stock ROM was also sluggish overall but would get a GPS fix within 5-10 seconds of starting TomTom or Navizon.
I flashed Duttys WM6.1 5.2.19199 RTM a few days ago and I'm using 1.58.26.20 Radio.
The GPS now takes aroud 20-30 seconds to get a fix. Not a massive increase for the extra benefits of the ROM, and nowhere near the 10 minutes others are getting but its definitely a little slower.

I suspect Dutty's ROM is resetting the GPS when it does a soft reset, hence the GPS loses all the 'known location'/satellite data it had before. So, basically, it has to start trying to figure out where it is in the world all over again. That can take quite a while if the satellite signals are weak, and the Qualcom receiver in the Kaiser is not as sensitive as the SIRFIII (IMO), nor is there any antenna included in the Kaiser.
I don't believe it's a problem with the nav software. It's the GPS unit which decides it has a fix or not.
/drt
OK I just spotted the "after a soft reset" bit. My 20-30 second time went up to around 2-3 minutes after a soft reset.
I guess the post above makes sense and would be worth more investigation.
Has anyone contacted Dutty yet?
Zippyioa
confirm that navigation soft are not in question.
I used GPSTest and GPSTool, same problem after reboot.
And QuickGPS or SeaSGEE have no effect...
To be precise, i have this:
[Mar 08 08]Dutty's Official WM6.1 5.2.19199 UC RTM
Radio 1.64.08.21
I think we need to try Niki's Radios...
Okay, so to those of us who have problems with screen ignoring/being very slow with screen taps and/or buttons, read on.
I flashed ROMeOS ROM and started having problems where I would tap on something, and it would ignore it. I would keep tapping and tapping, but nothing happened. Sometimes, even hardware buttons were ignored, about 40% of the clicks. I never had that problem with Dutty's Diamond ROM or WM6 ROMs. Issue seems to be related to latest 6.1 builds... or so it seemed at the time.
After pulling out half of my hair, reflashing all kinds of ROMs, reflashing to latest HardSPL, etc etc... I almost threw my kaiser at the wall.
First I thought it's TouchFLO, then I thought that it's the latest 6.1 ROMs.. then I thought it's related to 3.56 HardSPL.. well eliminating those factors one by one DID NOT fix the problem. Right now I went 100% to stock ROM (one it came with) and AT&T's original SPL. I started having sound problems (w/e radio I tried did not work) so I flashed Hyperdragon Wm6.1 ROM.
About 90% of the problem is phone ignoring ANY kind of touchscreen taps/drags.
About 10% of the time its the hardware buttons that have the problem - for example I push "call" (or any other softkey) button, and nothing happens, while touchscreen could be working fine at that time. In about 10 seconds, hardware buttons would start working again.
Some information that was gathered from this thread and personal research:
It looks like problem is NOT related to the following:
- POWER. Connecting phone to AC power does not solve the problem. Subjectively, it may improve it a little.
- BLUETOOTH/WIFI. Problem persists with EVERYTHING disabled and phone being in Airplane mode.
- PARTICULAR 6.1 ROM. I had this problem on ANY 6.1 ROM I tested (and I tested all the way from AT&T almost-official WM6.1).. maybe that's why they didn't release it?
- OPERA browser. Some people never had Opera and they still have this problem (please confirm this!).
- SPB/WISBAR interface software. Although having Wisbar stuff does make it a lot worse for me.. and I still have the problem without SPB or WISBAR installed.
- S2U2 screen lock. Still had the problem w/o S2U2 installed.
- iGo 2006 or iGo 8. Many users with this problem never used iGo.
Problem MAY be related to the following (needs more research, please help):
- Original SPL versus HARDSPL 3.XX
- WM6.0 versus WM6.1 (I don't think I had any problems running original AT&T 6.0 ROM, but I did have sound (radio) problems, so had to flash 6.1). Several users report that WM6.0 is immune to this problem.
- A combination of running WM6.1 with latest HardSPL?
- Custom ROM VS Original ROM. Perhaps problem is in the tweaks to the registry.
- Simple things like overtime connection weakening in touchscreen connection to the mainboard. Whoever can open a Kaiser could try to replug/clean it and report back to us.
- Radio version. Should be easy to test, just need to reflash all kinds of older radios and see if problem persists.
Please make sure that you test your phone with some touchscreen intensive games/software a lot for AT LEAST 3-4 days. I had it happen several times where it would be fine after reflash for about a day or so, and then it would come back in full force.
BRICK?
In my case, running HTC WM6.0 ROM with HTC SPL DID NOT fix the problem, I can even say it made it worse. Touchscreen would respond to about 10% of the screen taps. Tap pressure doesn't make any difference.
Also, running AT&T stock shipped ROM with stock shipped radio and SPL did not fix it. I guess at this point, nothing will. Waiting for replacement tilt.
Hope nobody else will get it as bad as I did. All I can say is... make those relfashes count.
Hmm isn't Touch Flo one of the cool things with the Kaiser??? How do you navigate in programs now it's disabeled?

So if you have similar problems - try using Shnaps' Advanced Config to disable the TouchFLO altogether.
Another thing that I've used is PocketMechanic to clean up the notification queue. After fresh install of HypreDragon (latest as of Aug 5), I had 46 duplicate notifications. Removing those seemed to ease the problem, but NOT fix it. Disabling TouchFLO seemed to finally fix it.
I hope this helps somebody. I'll update this thread if I keep having this problem..

Never really caled for it, I use my hardware buttons (D-pad) to scroll, I find TouchFLO to be too unreliable... maybe it's just me, but nothing beats a hardware button which you actually "PUSH".

Hello,
First off thak you for the post. Ive got two identical Tilts both with the exact same radio/boot/roms. One has this issue and the other doesnt. I will be disabling it on the one havong the issue and report back! Thanks much!!!
I was also having this problem. my biggest complaint was my keyboard was all over the place. Sometimes it wouldnt see key strokes at all, other times one key hit would register as 3 or 4.
Sent a few test messages and This seems to have helped.
THANK YOU!!!
My Kaiser was getting close to being flashed back to a WM6 rom or quite possibly embedded in a wall.

Try playing around with the TouchFLO sensitivity options in KaiserTweak
i upgraded to official 6.1 about two weeks ago...
i recently started having the "missed taps" problem...
i have a feeling that KaiserTweak has something to do with the issue...if memory serves, i don't remember experiencing the issue BEFORE i played with the "TouchFLO->Sensitivity" and "TouchFLO->Finger Pressure" options...i just launched KaiserTweak right now and its showing those values as set to defaults where as i could've sworn i changed them to the advised settings a day or two ago approximately when i started experiencing the issue...just a point to clarify, i was only playing around for no particular reason and my taps were not problematic before
i've just changed them to the advised settings and did a soft reset to see if these are the kind of settings that are forgotten after a soft reset...but they stuck...so i'm gonna observe this for a couple of days with the advised settings effective and see if they have reverted to defaults on first sight of the issue...i'll report back here if that happens because that would be a pretty strong correlation...almost enough to prove cause and effect
Well, problem is, last time I've used KaiserTweak was like a year ago, so my touchscreen problems cannot be linked to KaiserTweak. I don't even have it on my tilt.
Also, it's definitelly not a touchscreen itself, since this problem is application-dependent. Once again, S2U2 and Opera are immune to this problem. Windows' build-in apps (file explorer, bottom bar, etc) all suffer from it.
I've noticed this too, but I've found a slightly longer tap seems to make things reliable for me.. Instead of a quick 'jab' if I sort of touch it, it seems to be better.
and keyboard too I've noticed.. I mostly notice it with the hard keys rather than the keyboard, but I don't use the keyboard a lot.
I'll try looking for duplicate notifications, what else will do that besides MemMaid? I might reinstall it, it was handy. I previously found phoneAlarm would grow notifications over time, I suppose I need to watch for that anyway.

I use PocketMechanic - good stuff. Has lots of useful functions, including notification queue cleanup and analysis.
Just had another "seizure" - touchscreen would not respond AT ALL for several minutes. No matter what or how I tap - complete ignore.
After couple of minutes it started working again.
Interesting that S2U2 worked fine. Seems that windows just chooses to ignore touchscreen input.
I'm forced to return to WM6.0 ROM...
Please, anybody look into this.. phone is becoming to be unusable - I can't even enter a phone number.

Yeah it's really bad here. I've tried all sorts of tricks, including:
Re-install 6.1
Re-install 6.1 with the recent radio update found on the e-club
Install SPL 3.56
Disable HTC today screen
Kaisertweaks - tweaks on and off
Disable radio completely (seems to help, but makes the device useless)
Disable activesync
Disable quickgps
For now, I've done 2 things that seems to help:
- Disable the HTC task manager - improves the responsiveness
- Kill the MSTLI.EXE process - improves on the number of freezes
But I still experience freezes, and it's really getting to me. I need a responsive device, not this c****

I concur, it is application specific. I tried to run the "Task manager" from Fdcsoft to see if it was related to a process eating up all the CPU. But the problem doesn't occur while the application is focused.

Never really caled for it, I use my hardware buttons (D-pad) to scroll, I find TouchFLO to be too unreliable... maybe it's just me, but nothing beats a hardware button which you actually "PUSH".

TouchFlo is way too unreliable to me too.

True, if I keep pushing on the screen button, in about 5 seconds it will be clicked. But that's ridiculous, i gotta say.
I use PocketMechanic - good stuff. Has lots of useful functions, including notification queue cleanup and analysis.

Oh wow, not a LONG PRESS, literally a 'touch' vs a 'tap'. What you describe would be seriously annoying.
Thanks for the suggestion, I'll look at it
Yes, I know, another GPS thread. Not ideal, but search won't allow 'GPS'.
Plus I have searched 'manually' through alot of threads but to no avail. I still have a problem with my GPS. Basically, I can't get any GPS reception. I've tried different ROMs, radios, hard resets, soft resets, updated QuickGPS, run GPS Test, taken battery out, everything I think! I just have nothing. On GPS Test, all I have is a screen showing:
'GPS Starting Up' (Fix 1D, HDOP 0.00)
It just stays on that screen FOREVER. I'm beginning to think I might have a hardware problem.
Can anyone suggest any ways to test the GPS further? I know it's a pain having another GPS thread, but I really didn't know what else to do.
Hope someone has some sort of solution.
P.S. Note to mods: maybe enable 3 letter word searches? Some words are crucial, such as GPS, sim, etc.
In the gps settings on gps test have you changed the baud rate to 4800

yes. i've tried all the baud rates just to be sure. I also get no response in Google Maps. Just nothing. It's detecting that I have a GPS unit integrated into the device, but no signals are being picked up. Does the fact GPS Test is stuck on 'GPS Starting up' signify anything? It seems strange it doesn't say 'Cannot connect to any satellites', or something similar. Or is 'GPS Starting up' the same as saying that? I'm just totally lost.
I should have said, I have been trying this outdoors as well. Not indoors.
Now, this is an extremely long shot. I just checked my battery and my phone. My phone is marked (under where the battery would be) as a DIAM100. The battery is marked as DIAM160. I've seen on the forum before different numbers like this meaning different things, and also different batteries creating GPS problems. Anyone ahve any idea about this? It's so frustrating!

Well to answer your question above my phone also states its a DIAM100 and the battery also states DIAM160 and my GPS works flawlessly.
I dont really know what to suggest to you.
Hope there is someone in this forum that can help.
Good luck
Clean install, QuickGPS data, then run GPS Test...
When you are running GPS Test after a clean install with updated data from QuickGPS only do you get any bars at all? Typically you start with nothing, then yellow bars pop up (and disappear....) eventually turning to green. Need at least 3 green bars to get a decent fix....

I'm not getting anything. It just stays on the 'GPS Starting up' display. No bars, nothing.
I has the same problems with setting up GPS after flashing with various ROMS. The answer was found within these forums, can't remember who but credit to you, simply back up your settings and hard reset. After I did this GPS has worked flawlessly getting a fix in under a minute. Hope this helps.
Forgot to mention AGPS is turned off using Advanced Configuration, available from this forum, and using CoPilot 7.
I've already Hard-resetted multiple time on multiple roms. I'm just getting nothing. AGPS is already off too.
Flash with another ROM... hard reset after FLASHING.... and then start HTC_GPS_TOOL
Last resort, then warrenty return I suspect
If it has never worked since new then it sounds like flaw with the device, and perhaps a return to store...very unlucky. Last resort might be to change your Hard-SPL but thats getting desperate

What should I be seeing in HTC_GPS_TOOL? It is all very confusing. Lots of numbers and stuff. Seems to be repeating a five line sequence. Doesn't seem to be linking to any satellites.

With HTC Gps tool you can make a "cold reboot" of your gps. This means it removes any data in the gps. - Do that, go outside and wait for 10 minuttes. This usualy works for me.
You can get the gps tool on my homepage www.maritime-billeder.dk/htc-diamond.html
Could you possibly give me a step-by-step process of making the cold reboot? Thanks.

Using HTC GPS Tool (latest version best), in the menus select Q7200 for chip, 4800 baud, and COLD restart of GPS....have you had this issue from new? Has the GPS ever worked on your device?
Nothing was working. Getting a new handset from Orange tomorrow.
GPS same problem
evilskanker, I have exactly the same problem. the user "pietrucci" on this forum also sent his device for repairs as nothing helped, not even flashing everything back to stock.
this is SO frustrating and if I can't get it to work I'll never flash any **** like this on my device again.

Which version is the latest of HTC GPS Tool, I was supprised to see you have chip model selection which I don't have. Mine is exactly looks like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOesPtnXP9o
Is mine the old one? No wonder I couldn't get cold start working.
But how come the version you have doesn't have "clear memory" option?
I'm going to give a shot with your version tomorrow since it is too cloudy outside tonight.
