PUSH email for Win Mo

Hi Guys!
I've search the forums to find the best solution there is for Push Email, but I haven't been able to find much. I do not have an exchange server myself, so I'm looking for a service or something of that sort.
I signed up for MobiPush, and it works great, but the only issue I have is that my ActiveSync always stays on, and keeps my GPRS connection active 24/7. Is that how it should be? Isn't that a battery drain, is there a better way to do it?

When you check via ActiveSync, does your GPRS connection always stay active?

No. But is is a opion in KaiserTweak to keep connection alive. Is a hit for your battery!

Yeah..I don't want it to stay alive..i think its pointless for it to stay alive all the time!

My KaiserTweak is set at 1 Min for disconnection, but it doesnt really disconnect the connection!

well..i do want push email...because of work..but I was hoping there would be a way it would disconnect the GPRS and then reconnect it when there was a new mail..hehe somehow!

There is a way - an SMS can be sent to tell you that there is a new message.
I use push email (www.exchangemymail.com - not the cheapest, but it does have postini filtering...) and find that battery life is OK, but I typically charge mine in my car an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening, that's all I need and I have 3G on all day.

Microsoft offers push email through their Live Services. I have a @live.com account and get push email,but again,it seems activesync is always connected and Kaiser tweaks will not help. And the battery takes a big hit. Also, you better have an unlimited data plan or your wallet will take a big hit too.

Read this article (about half way down)[1] It explains how the mobile Phone sync with the exchange server. In essence a http connection is kept open at all times. It used to be (in 5.0/exchange 2003 times) that the connection with the mobile was an SMS sent from the server. That means that every email cost you 1 SMS. Depending on your plan that can be very expensive)
It goes through this cycle:
1.) mobile http request to exchange server with timeout info
2.) exchange server checks for new mail
----> no new mail: server waits until timeout then send an empty reply. The mobile then starts anew at 1.)
----> mail arrives before timeout: server sends the the reply immediately with information which folders to sync. After syncing the whole process starts at 1.) again
Short answer: Yes your GRPS connection will have to be always on BUT if there is no mail there is only a minimal amount of data used. Also using a 6.1 rom helps a lot with battery life (at least in my experience).

I use SEVEN mail. It's the actual product behind cingular's ExpressMail, but you can get a newer version by joining the beta (neverending, it seems) for Seven at http://preview.seven.com

I installed Seven and I feel its a lot better than MobiPush, but I feel like when I click the Messages tab on my phone (from HTC Home), it takes forever to open it up!
Do you guys feel that too?

If you have gmail or any other email account that allows you to set it to automatically forward email. And if you have unlimited text messaging on your phone plan then the solution I use might be useful for those who want a push email function.
There is a small program called QoreFunctions Pusheffect. Its for WM devices and this is part of the solution. You can find this online to purchase
In general here is how it works. Your cell service provider offers you a email address that takes emails in but delivers them as text messages on your phone.
1. In your normal email provider set it to forward every email you get to the email address that your phone provider delivers emails as text messages.
2. Install and configure Push effect according to the instructions they offer and your done.
Here's what happens. Email hits your regular email account. That forwards email to your cell phone text message account. A text message arrives on your phone. Push effect reads the text message and can tell it came because there is email waiting in your regular email account. It then triggers your mobile email to connect and pick up your email from your regular account.
This all happens in just a few seconds after the mail hits your regular email account.
The benefits are it works with Lot's of email services and does not require exchange in any way. It also is not polling your email account so no extra drain on your battery

That has nothing to do with push mail. That's just a bug or something in HTC Home. Try clicking the Messaging icon in Programs or mapping a hardware button to it. You will see how fast the messaging application comes up. But for some reason when you try and invoke messaging from that icon in HTC Home it takes several seconds. I don't know why.

the same sms technique was developed by a fellow xda developer and offered for free! try it, it works great. best to have unlimted text and data though if you go this route. also means you dont need to have your data connection on all the time, save battery!
set up kaiser tweaks so your data connection disconnect after every xx minutes. set your email to forward new mail to your SMS address. when you get the notification of new mail on your device, it launches poutlook and checks your mail. then after xx minutes your connection turns off. works great! connection only when new mail comes in.
in the program there is a simple config you have to set up so the program knows which sms notification to trigger poutlook so it doesnt open outlook on all sms notifications you have. usually notifications that are for new mail have specific text in the subject and body and you can use that to distinguish emailed forwarded sms from regular sms you get from friends.

the only other way to use it without sms is to have your connect on at all times. there's a trade off and depends which route you want to go.

Seven notification alerts!

Thanks for all your help! So I've started using Seven, and everytime I get an email, I have a little red icon on my taskbar (on top) and my phone vibrates. Is there a way to turn these notifications off?

No (real) push email even with Xpress Mail!!

After dealing with buggy versions of Windows Live (I got one version to work reasonably well with push, though it's spotty), I decided to try
Xpress Mail after reading that it has improved.
I set it up on my AT&T Fuze (stock ROM) to use my Gmail account and soft-reset. It's set up to do push by default. I sent myself three test e-mails and, of course, none of them came to my phone immediately. It took anywhere from five to 15 minutes for an e-mail to come through.
After I performed a manual send/receive I sent myself a couple more e-mails and NOTHING! They all came super late.
I know some folks on here are having no problems with their e-mail, but why the hell is it so hard for others to get our push e-mail going?

I've always been under the impression that "push" mail only works with an Exchange Server... and it works well with my business e-mails. I check gmail through IMAP which is an improvement overPOP3, but still needs to poll the server on a schedule.

Push email is a service provided by the email carrier or vendor, exchange works very good with push because I use it on a daily basis. GMail (as far as I know) does not offer Push, what Xpress mail does is poll (via IMAP) to gmail and pushes the emails once Xpress has received it rather then having your phone do the polling.

Are you serieus? Why my w810i/k850i/w960i all used pushmail service from Gmail? So yes it have pushmail for shure, only MS don't like the idea of not using exchange for it and now we all have to suffer for that :S

i'm using Mobipush(.com) with satisfaction.

I have windows live set up on ROMeOS and I'm having no problem with push. Sometimes I send CABs to myself so i can get them on my phone and it always happens instantly.

If MS didn't like the idea of not using exchange... they wouldn't allow outlook to get mail from pop3/imap. If that's suffering you need to expand your horizons a bit... Sorry for the rant, just tired of anti-MS (not that I'm a big fan). Credit where credit is due.
I didn't read the RFC, but I don't think IMAP supports "push". There is a new proposal for Push-IMAP (P-IMAP) based on IMAP4... Android OS seems to support "push" Gmail and iPhones have some proprietary hooks to get "push" Gmail. So "push" Gmail is out there...

GMail (as far as I know) does not offer Push.....
Emoze - www.emoze.com offers not only G'Mail "pushed" but also access to G'Apps too!!!!!

IMAP IDLE can be called Push-Mail.
The email client can stay in contact with the IMAP server, which tells the client that there is new mail.
Unfortunately, Outlook Mobile does NOT support IMAP IDLE.
ImapPusherService adds this functionality, but it's still an early version...

I'm not satisfied with Xpress email either. I've only added my main Gmail on so far for testing, but I have several more I want to monitor. With my Treo 680 I had no problem with email monitoring. During Mon-Fri daytime I monitor all my accts with thunderbird portable and therefore don't want email being picked up by the phone too. I set up the custom time settings in Xpress to not do this and yet, email still came through. Also it often picks up old mail - mail that was sent several days ago that I'd already read via POP on thunderbird, etc. I don't want to deal with this ridiculousness. I don't need instant Push per se, but at least the ability to set an account to check every five minutes. Would I be able to replace Xpress with Emoze, FlexMail, ProfiMail, or other email apps smoothly? As in replace it on my email tab easily?

I've had no issued with xpress mail. I'm actually participating in their beta program and have hotmail, yahoo and my work lotus notes mail pushing. A lot of times I will get mail on my htc touch pro before my Notes client on my laptop pulls in the mail.
The big ting I'm looking for (for my wifes phone) is a solution that can push contacts and calendar from yahoo, hotmail or gmail.
Lastly I wish one of these solutions would some how include a script or something triggering your VPN client. When I'm away from my desktop I need the connector to reconnect to the work mail server but it can't without me manually starting my vpn client.
Maybe I need to learn how to write a script to not own launch my VPN client but also to click on connect...

For everyone that claims Gmail doesn't offer push, if i connect the first time to it via imap on every latest model (later then w810i) it says 'gmail offers pushmail, activate it on this phone?'... it workes really great (on a SE phone) but MS don't like us to use other clients...
It just sucks, and of there was a real solution for this (a real program instead of ms outlook) it wil be used by almost everyone with wm i quess!

I wanted to throw out some names: I use Seven's Beta for my university (Yale) IMAP push. I also use Funambol to synchronize contacts, tasks, notes, calendar with Outlook.
Alternatives for Push Gmail include Emansio, Emoze, IMAP-pusher service, Mobipush.
I've posted on this issue extensively, so just do a search!

I currently use seven and don't like that it can't set times to push the data (say every hour). It just leaves a time on to push. Like a time period. How is mobipush or emoze?

Be frank forget all above. there is 2 best option you can have.
1) get mail2web.com account: they offering free exchange service.( my opionen best for free only negative point.. the mails that you send hve the extension [email protected]
2) flexmail software:I think best email client but takes some memory. with that you can download you mail (gmail) IMAP and IDLE which is kinda pushmail. it take 1 minute to arrive on you device.

Seriously? Why? I have a yahoo account. And I've been using SEVEN so far, and it gets my mail faster than my mail counter on my yahoo widgets can count.

Push Email

Afternoon,
I finally got round to setting up my gmail account on my vario 3 and actually using it to send and receive emails etc but there is a small problem...
I have set it up to heck from mail every five minutes automatically....however, it doesnt seem to work...i think i have narrowed it down to power settings...
I have the backlight to go off after 10 secs and teh "turn off device" after 1 minute.
After that minute, the pulse that checks for mail doent run untill i do something with the phone to wake it out of standbye...
Is there a fix available for this other than modify my power settings (which i would prefer not to do)

Not sure I understand fully but if you want it to truely receive push email, then the data connection must be active all the time... and that uses power, lots of it. When you think about it this makes sense because how is the phone going to know when a new email comes in unless it's constantly connected to the internet. I had this setup with my Hotmail account after someone here told me how to do so but reverted back to only checking manually when I wanted it to after I found the battery life fell through the floor. You could make sure other things like bluetooth and wifi are turned off when not being used to maximise a charge but even just having data on all the time makes quite a difference.

from what i understand of push email, it uses a pulse to connect to the net, check for mail and then disconnect again...i have always had my internet connected on my vario and never noticed a increase in battery life when i have spent days without it off (on holiday)
is there not a way to make the 5 minute pulse ignore the screen being turned off?

Window Mobile Push Mail requires an Exchange Server (2003 or 2007 flavor) on the other end.
Without that your just using scheduled pull mail.
The heartbeat/pulse whatever you want to call it does continue to work when the device is in standby if you are using true push mail.

Do you know if that includes Hotmail? If its set up right, my Hotmail emails will be received pretty much instantaneously. Maybe they use Exchange Servers - I don't know if these can be configured for HTTP mail? Even when I had that configured though I still didn't get the Com Manager Microsoft Direct Push Icon to jump to life (it's always been grey).

@hotmail and @live use M$ Direct push, if you set it up for " as they arrive " emails. They do this however by keeping your phone constantly connected = kill battery. I had to shut my push email off to get a full 8hrs out of my battery.

Seven Push Email
Hey maybe you can try this little app called Seven from seven systems. It provides free true push email to WinMo environments. You can configure many accounts for example from hotmail, yahoo, gmail and others. There is a beta that is completely free of charge. Ive been using it for quite a while now (WinMo and Symbian) and Im very pleassed with its performance. Check it out here http://www.seven.com/ and go to the beta program section to download it.

Thats what I've tried in the past and certainly the emails arrive pretty quickly. I don't know if its genuine Push Email or just polling really often though. It also doesn't explain why the Microsoft Push Email icon in Com Manager never does anything other than sit there greyed out.

That highlights when you have a proper exchange account attached for push emial therefore isnt activated when google and hotmail are set up.

that 5 minute setting is not called "pushmail". it's calles "i'll ddos my mailserver by asking for mails every 5 minutes"
there are several free pushmail provider arround www.mail2web.com is one of them. they offer a completely free exchange 2003 account with active sync for contacts, tasks, calendar and pushmail

I find that the Windows Live 'As items arrive' option works well, though this seems to be pulling at high frequencies to provide the illusion of Push e-mail. I used to experience temperamental service but now it works flawlessly - as well as friends' blackberry devices. I don't have to keep my phone signed in to Messenger which is often advised to maintain a consistent delivery of e-mails.
I set up the Blackberry Connect service (£5/month) with T-Mobile UK but immediately reverted to using Windows Live (which is free given that you have a data connection) as the BB Connect service acts as a middleman, while Windows Live connects directly (or appears to) to your Hotmail inbox. Messages you read or mark as unread will be viewed as read/unread in your mailbox via a PC, folders can be synched and sent items are synchronised. Perfect for me. The only problem is reduced battery life.

Sprint - Push E-mail options

Hello all,
I've now had my TP for almost 3 months and am truly loving it. As you might know, I was a TOTAL noob to WinMo, and in regards to some of the more advanced things, I still am.
This brings me to my topic:
I would like to know if Microsoft Outlook allows for "Push" e-mail on to the TP. If not, what recommended E-mail systems are out there that can push to the TP (i.e. gmail, hotmail, yahoo)?
I am currently using Comcast, and was considering going the Mail2Web route, but it seemed too confusing...I know, I'm a moron. (As for "Seven", I've heard it's not yet stable and it severly taxes the battery.) As such, if anybody who has had success with Mail2Web and the Touch Pro, would you mind posting (or PMing) "step-by-step" instructions on how you got it working?
In either case, I also ask the more experienced people if you can either tell me or direct me to a site which explains the whole concept of Outlook, Exchange, and other elements of Push e-mail.

LOL, I was just editing that into my OP.
I've heard it's not stable yet in that there is a delay in receiving E-mails and that it places a large drain on your battery.

Although it is still in a beta stage I don't think it unstable at all and emails at least for me being pushed from gmail come within 2 seconds. I can't disagree that it will take a toll on your battery but that's the price we pay for push email. If anyone has any other suggestions I'd also be glad to know.

I use Mail2Web. It's easy to setup, just go to Activesync and add a server and use:
[email protected] (as the username)
ur password
and skip the auto detect the server step and use:
mobile.exchange.mail2web.com (as the server)
**Note-I don't use mail2web as my email, I use gmail. And what I did was set my gmail account to foward to the mail2web account, so I get the emails pushed from both. However, the outgoing email address it shows, when I send a message is the mail2web account.
I've been using this for a while, and it works pretty good. I get email notifications pretty much instantly with this setup, and also syncs my contacts, calendar and tasks online for easy backing up

I would like to keep 3rd party sources as a second option.
First, I would like to know if Microsoft Outlook has the ability to Push E-mail to the TP without severly draining the battery.
Now, if that is not an option, then I would like some clarification on the Mail2Web process.

I know I sound like a moron, but that's because in this matter, I am.

another option is EMOZE. Its a good alternative to seven if you just care about emails. it really dont do the contacts too well and calendar not at all. again good app if you just care about getting your gmail emails....

Well, after a lot of searching, I went ahead with steb0ne's idea of using Mail2Web LIVE. So far it works great, especially since I've set all my comcast e-mails to autoforward to the M2W account so I can receive them "instantly" as well.
I do have a few concerns though that maybe a few of you guys can address:
1) How does Direct Push actually work? Does it establish a connection every so often looking for new messages?
2) Generally speaking, how much battery life does it drain during the course of a normal 8-hour day if I keep Direct Push active in the Comm. Manager?
3) How good is M2W at keeping SPAM messages away?

I have used seven, mail2web, and the sprint mobile email app. I prefer mail2web over the others. The sprint app is based on the seven email program, but only allows for one email address.
With the seven program I have noticed a noticeable lag in receiving my email. I have sent an email to the an account, received in on my desktop and still dont get it for up to 10min on my phone. With Mail2web I usually get it on my phone before the computer, also the online system they use will save all of your contacts, calender so you can access it from your phone or computer, as well as have an easy backup if you lose your phone, or do a hard reset.

So if I use seven, which they and Sprint say my TP is not supported, does it still send from my email addy or some seven.com email?
for me its all but useless to just get email if I cant send it.

when i try to set up active sync i put details in , user pass server, there is a field "domain" which i cannot get past unless i put something in it , trying to use mobipush and their directions are to leave domain blank but if i do i cant progress on my screen the next button wont highlight, any ideas

How to push email

I've been pulling my hair out looking around for how exactly to have emails pushed to the G1. I have both K9 Email for Yahoo and the stock Gmail app for Gmail that I'm trying to get it pushed on.
How the hell do I get this working?? I see no options ANYWHERE to do it, but upon Googling it, everyone seems all happy and excited that it -can- push emails. But, NONE OF THESE PLACES EXPLAINS HOW! I don't care if they're glad it can or not, I want to know HOW to do it. Google themselves don't even mention it.
Can somebody please explain how to push emails before I lose my mind and possibly all my hair??

what the hell are you talking about?
You automatically get all emails from the account you registered your g1 with pushed to your device if u did not manually disable it in settings. Via thhe mentioned G(oogle)Mail application!

You can also use the suppiled email app that comes pre installed on the phone. Works with all the major emails except those from an exchange server.

That mail isn't exactly pushed, from what I understand pushed emails to be. Pushed is immediately sending a notification once email is received, the one in Google mail and K-9 has timed when it checks the source email.

Not even SMS are really PUSHED to your device. It is how it is. Use it and shut up.
How shall it technical work to push something to your device ? It is impossible .. The intervalls for sms/calls are just much shorter.. thats why mobiles drain so much battery even in standby.. and the intervall for gmail to check new emails is shorter than 1minute .. i dunno how much is it but it's near to instant

You do have an exchange account? POP3/web mail can't be pushed

The GMail client does not "check" the source email, it uses a proprietary version of IMAP IDLE (push) technology. It is indeed pushed to your phone, when "Sync" is enabled. However, K9 and the stock email app do not provide IMAP IDLE support at this time, so there is no way to set that up. K9 has it on the To-Do list. I don't know about you, but the instant my account that is set up with the Gmail client on the phone gets an email - my phone notifies me, sometimes it is faster then a desktop client. And, I assure you that it is not constantly sending out requests checking in for mail on the server, that would be poor coding on Google's part and waste a lot of their resources.
So, to answer your concerns directly.
The GMail client IS what is referred to as "Push" email.
The K9 and stock Email clients are currently not capable of "Push" email.

How about doing some reading before sticking your foot further into your throat.
IMAP IDLE - how it works.
It is very efficient.

"This means that an active client will always be kept up to date. The IDLE command deals with the situation where the client has no more requests to make. The server responds to the idle command when there is a new message (or messages) which indicates to the client that there are new messages. "
as i said it .. the g1 "pings" the server all the time ..

You're still looking for a clue, almost getting there
In case of push mail your phone does NOT poll for new mails: The mailserver will notify your phone when new mail is available. Yes your phone sends an idle command, but nothing happens after that: The connection is just left open and when there is new mail the server will send it.

I think you are grasping the concept, but the semantics are lost on you.
It works like this:
1. Client connects to server, does it's initial check-in, and handles new requests.
2. Client sends IDLE command to server, telling the server that it is still active, but not actively sending requests.
3. Client sits IDLE (no more data is transmitted from client to server unless an action takes place on the CLIENT requiring transmission - ie, an email is sent).
4. Server receives a new message.
5. Server sends a packet to the Client (knowing where it is located based on the open - yet IDLE connection).
6. Client responds to the packet and is subsequently transmitted the message.
See how many times I used the word IDLE - get the picture? As long as you know what IDLE means, you will understand how efficient this is. Here is a quote from that page I posted a link to:

Another practical problem is that current phone networking technology will lose IP network connectivity from time to time, and this will need to be automatically re-established, and the IMAP connection re-established if this is lost due to a long network failure.

Anyway, back to the subject at hand.
Proxin - I believe (although I could be wrong) what is going on is that you don't have the Gmail as your primary mail account - the one that everyone sends email to.
I only lately began to use Gmail. So, I have three email addresses that are set to forward to the Gmail account. The time it takes for these email to be forwarded and received by Gmail is the only lag I experience at all.
If you are using Gmail's "fetcher" feature to fetch email from other accounts... I have seen up to 30 minutes before each "fetch." So, it can take awhile. In which case I suggest that you go to any primary accounts that you have and set them to forward your email to your Google account and see if that decreases the delay.

Touchdown by exchange is the best email push app on g1 currently. But its not free . if u wanna sync contacts u can do that during the trial period
I just got my g1 Monday and all my contacts were on a server and I was discouraged that I could sync google or my g1 contacts with the exchange server. I then tested every app in the marketplace i could find and couldn't get any to sync contacts except Touchdown.
ExchangeIt worked fine after I figured out how to use it. Most of the other apps only work for Microsoft Server 2007 so they weren't compatible.

Touchdown rocks, and is worth the money.
Even the Exchange support in the upcoming cupcake is lame, as ig works with a lame email client.
