Be kind (Newb)
I have the AT&T Tilt with a 4gig Sd card and want to do a hard reset to remove bloatware but I need to keep my contacts, can anyone in layman terms tell me how to do this (Do I need to remove the SD card when I hard reset)
Thanks
Boogie
Unfortunately, the act of hard-resetting your phone will not get rid of any of the bloatware. It'll all simply re-install itself as part of the automated 'customization' that is included in that ROM when you do the hard reset. If you want to get rid of bloatware, the only real solution for you would be to install HardSPL, and then flash one of the ROMs in the ROM forum. It's not really necessary to remove your SD card when you hard reset, but hard resetting is not really going to accomplish what you want. As for keeping your contacts - if you're syncing with Outlook on a PC, you can simply re-establish a partnership after hard-resetting, and your contacts will re-sync to your device. Otherwise, there are several programs out there to help you with this - like PIM Backup. Just do a search, you should be able to find out some information on that software.

First, sync with Outlook or do a PIM backup. Then, do a hard-reset and right before your device does the initial customization, soft-reset your device. That will prevent most of the bloatwares from installing, but, if you want a completely clean ROM, look into one of the cooked Lite ROMs.

From the WIKI:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=TiltSpecificWikiPage
The following section should tell you what you want to know:
How do I get all the crap (bloatware) off my Tilt without flashing it?
See next section...
AT&T ROM Standard Programs
If you are thinking of sticking with the standard ROM, but getting rid of all the bloatware, here is what you get out of the box with the AT&T ROM both before and after bypassing the (bloatware) customizations. Note this does not include any of the programs on CD that you must install afterwards.
To bypass the customization install, do a hard reset, go through the Windows Mobile initialization steps (Callibrate Screen, Cut and Paste, etc..) then do a soft reset before the AT&T customization install starts.
NOTE - This will reset your device back the the original settings, which means any programs or customization you have made will be lost, including all of your Outlook synced info.
There are several ways to get your data and customizations back including backups, and resyncing, but there are many details to this process and it is beyond the scope of this topic. Your best bet is to decide upfront if you want the Bloatware and move forward from there. To help you decide, here is what you get under the Bloatware/Non Bloatware setups. Keep in mind that many of the programs included as Bloatware are trials, and if there are some you think you may want, you can usually find a link to them somewhere on the forum.

bricked Tilt
Being new, I am not sure this is posted to correct place, but this site has incredible depth so it is not so easy to find correct post place where someone might see it and answer. I have tried to respect the rules, so this is my first post. Most everything here is very easy to understand and has worked as stated.
As a new person (last 2 weeks), last night, I successfully flashed ROM and unlocked my ATT TILT. Next I tried to remove bloatware to free space. I used a suggestion from this sight to hard reset, then go through set up screens and before running set up do a soft reset. The soft reset triggered the ATT startup screen then the 3d screen, then total darkness. I have gotten the screen to show white snow once or twice, but nothing more.
In searching this site, I have tried a hard reset by holding down the soft keys and soft reset button. This did not work. I tried holding down the start, camera and soft reset button which gets me to tricolor screen, and no further. I tried various ideas, nothing.
Please help! Am I screwed? Should I call ATT,, or just buy new phone?
Maybe just try to reflash your ROM (or another one) from the bootloader screen?

You first need to let us know what rom you ried to flash? Was it an AT$T rom or a custom rom. Which one?
Thanks for quick responses!
I used http://www.4shared.com/file/65469410...dUnlocker.html It is a ROM flasher (I think and an unlock program. I dont know what ROm came with it, if any. But the thread is located at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=433835
For what its worth, this thread was great! Any ideas what I should do?
It was ATT Rom
Also, dont know how to getr to bootloader screen or what it looks like.
Follow up
Also, how do I get to the bootflasher screen, and what does it look like?

So you sim unlocked ? or cid unlocked ? your your AT$T phone then tried to flash an AT$T rom to it ? with or without flashing Hardspl ?
The bootloader screen is the tri -colored screen.
thanks
OK, I can get to the Tri color screen. Dont know what to do once there. I think the answer to your question is:
Flashed the ATT ROM using the following steps:
1. MAKE SURE YOUR KAISER HAS AT LEAST 50% BATTERY POWER FIRST
2. Download and Unzip the Following File:
http://www.4shared.com/file/65469410...dUnlocker.html
3. Flash HardSPL 3.29
Flashing via ActiveSync with USB Lead
1. Copy JumpSPL1.56-KAIS.exe and JumpSPL1.93-KAIS.exe to your device memory (NOT STORAGE CARD)
2. Pull out the battery and reinsert it (this step IS important) *DONT turn phone back on yet*
3. Connect your phone to PC with a USB cable
4. REMOVE SIM and SD CARDS !!
5. Turn phone back on and wait until it syncs with your PC
6. Run a File Explorer, browse to where you copied JumpSPL1.56-KAIS.exe on your device and run it (make sure the USB cable is still connected). If you get a white screen then reset your device and now try JumpSPL1.93-KAIS.exe
7. CLick Continue on phone when prompted
8. After a few seconds the tri colour screen will appear on the phone and "USB" will be displayed at the bottom
9. Unplug the usb cable for 30 seconds and then Replug (phone will not re-sync but still says "USB" on the screen)
10. Right click on the Activesync icon in the bottom corner icon on the computer, goto connection settings, deselect "Allow USB connections" and click "ok"
11. Microsoft ActiveSync icon will now have a red cross in it and the program will say "Connection Disabled"
12. Run the KaiserCustomRUU.exe file on your PC thats in the same folder as the HardSPL .nbh file and follow instructions (ticking boxes and clicking Next) *DO NOT reenable USB Connections in Activesync*
13. Update will goto 100%, the Congratulations screen will be displayed on the PC and the phone will restart
14. If you have problems with Steps 12,13 then try starting again with the JumpSPL1.93-KAIS.exe file.
15. Unplug USB cable from phone then REPLACE SIM and SD CARDS !!
16. Restart phone
During the process used:
JUMPSPL1.93-KAIS
followed the menus then said succesful.
Then used KaiserCustomRUU to complete flash
Included Kaiserhardspl-3.29.nbh being added to phone. (Dont see it there now through USB conne4ction)
followed the menus then said succesful.
Unlocked steps:
** YOUR DEVICE MUST BE SYNCED WITH YOUR COMPUTER BEFORE RUNNING EACH STEP **
* If the program wont run u may need to install Microsoft .NET 2.0 on your computer to get it working*
1. Run KaiserUnlocker.EXE, follow the instructions.
(bear in mind you will already have Hard-SPL on your device so you can skip *straight* to Step 2)
2. After patched Radio has been flashed phone will restart and sync with the computer.
3. On the Unlocker Program it should say Radio Patched at the bottom.
4. Click on Step 3 (Run Unlocker). This will bring up the Unlocker screen on your phone.
5. If you want to check the status of your Sim Lock or CID Lock click the appropriate buttons.
6. Click on Remove Sim Lock and Set CID, then click "Commit Changes".
* IF YOU DONT NEED TO FLASH A NEW ROM THEN PROCEED TO STEP 6 TO PUT YOUR DESIRED RADIO BACK*
Received ulock sucessful notice and at bootleger screen also indicates it.
Then (this is where it messed up) followed the following steps to remove bloatware:
Hard reste using the clear memory icon on my Tilt. the ATT screen then 3D screen appeared, then the tap screen then the cut and past exemple then ready to begin????
This is when I did the soft reset and the phone iusnt the same since. black screen after ATTT and 3d screens at start up.
Does this help?
If the phone is only 2 weeks old , it should already have 6.1 on it so what AT$T rom were you trying to upgrade to ? Secondly, why did fel the need to go through all the trouble of unlocking and flashing Hardspl for an AT$T rom. The phone already has AT$T spl on it.
Never the less, go into bootloader and flash again., this time let all bloatware load then hard reset. Let everything load again. Then Hard Reset again, this time soft reset after set up right when the screen goes to the 6.1 desktop, BEFORE the customiztion in three seconds screen appears , If that screen appears it is too late and you have to hard reset again.
I always do a hard rest with the keys not the clear storage.
thaks
I wanted to flash so I could load one of the cooked ROMS and the program I found was one I could follow.
I have tried your suggestion and even tried using MTTY_19.42. Through it I got everything to reload then it autorestarts and goes back to blank/snow screen.
I dod not ice I have a bad sector 1909, and found onloy one string on it which I can not understand.
I am smelling defeat, did I brick it, or is there any other suggestions?
Thank you for helping.
Did you try reseting and following mskip's steps using jump mspl 1.93 for white screen ?
stupid question
How do I run JumpSPL1.93-KAIS.exe on phone if I can only see white screen on phone?
Access it thru the file eexplorer in Activesync.
Now when you hard reset ( press two soft keys and soft reset, and follow screen directs ) it goes to white screen after reset?
When you try to re-flash AT$T rom, it flashes, then goes to white screen after hard reset?
Mtty (not to mess with unless you know what you are doing ) shows bad sector , but does not allow to repair ?
Is that where we are at so far?
whie screen
you have it exactly
Sorry to be so obtuse but I can add the Jump file as you suggest in the response immediately above, but it also says to run it once its in the phone directory. I cant run it though. When I 2x click it it just brings up the file properties.

Why is the "Progam In Use" more if you've bypassed the customizations?

I have just reflashed the firmware on my UK Orange SPV M2000 after porting my mobile operator over to virgin mobile. i did this so i could remove the Operator customisations which were just taking up ram, and also to see if i could make my phone more reliable (one of my biggest bugbears is not being able to use Wifi without a soft reset) as a result i can switch on and of bluetooth and wifi at will without any errors, and i havent performed a soft reset because of a problem in 6 days (i have soft resetted after installing some programs as it was required by the prog)
I achieved by first downloading ftp://xda:/BlueAngel/BlueAngel_Roms/BA_1.40_radio_1.20_untested_extrom.rar and removing the Radio_.nbf file and flashing that to the phone.
once that was done i did a hard reset then flashed radion rom 1.13 as described here http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=BA_Radio_1.13_Upgrade
I then downloaded all the files from here ftp://ftp.xda-developers.com/BlueAn...ERK_1.4X_002/I-Mate_PDA2K_Ext_ROM_140176_WWE/ into a directory on my PC
I then deleted
Default_ImateV112.002.cab -> dont need it as i havent got an imate so dont need imate email
Default_Caller_ID_BA_AKU26_RC20.CAB -> i will explain why in a minute
Default_Fax_V2.09_WWE_0720.CAB -> havent got a need for faxes
Default_SkypeForPocketPC.CAB -> this is pants and so is skype
and then i then added cabs for the following programs prefixing them with the Default_ so they would install after hard reset
Voice command 1.5 for Phone edition -> i think every one uses this
Photo Contacts Pro v 3.01 -> This is fantastic beats the IA caller ID hands down
I then used the extrom unlocker and deleted all the files in the extended rom and then copied my downloaded files into it. the then locked and hid the extended rom again and then performed a hard reset
once that was done i added in the Virgin GPRS and MMS settings (If anyone wants help with this part for virgin settings let me know as i am working on creating a CAB file with these settings) and renamed device and added owner information.
There are two problems now, the first i can fix, the camera raises the backlight to full and then keeps it that way. i just deleted camera.exe from the windows directory and then replaced it with the camera app that was originally on the device (make a backup of this file b4 you start)
The only problem that is left is a problem that happened with WMP9 and WMP10 if music is playing and you close WMP then your device loses all sound. i dont know of a workaround for this, but i make sure i pause any music before i close the app, not a big thing really
I then loaded on these apps mainly into the storage memory except that specifically request you install them into main memory
SPB Pocket Plus 2.5
SPB weather
SPB Diary
Ewallet
Tomtom Navigator 5
Microsoft Reader
Pocket Mechanic
and last but not least my favourite game Virtual Pool Mobile v1.6
This doesnt sound like many apps but it suits my needs perfectly for the moment.
I then took a full backup onto SD........
and viola one ultra stable Orange SPV M2000
i hope it works for you too
I would do what i did when installing apps and install one at a time and test especially task managers and today screens as these use up driver memory, this is where the problem with the WIFI and bluetooth starts
and in case i dont see you good afternoon and good evening and goodnight (watched the trueman show again! )
Interesting and well detailed,
I then used the extrom unlocker and deleted all the files in the extended rom and then copied my downloaded files into it. the then locked and hid the extended rom again and then performed a hard reset

What i mean is i run the extended rom unlocker tools on the device by selecting unhide & unlock and then through activestink browse to the /extended rom folder and then delete the files and then copy the extended rom files from the pc and put in thier place.
i hope that clarifies it for you
and yes i can attch the file for download, but its on my other comp and because of a failed raid array i havent replaced yet it takes 20 mins to boot, so i will do it tommorow
Thanks, fuzzy. Looking forward to that
fuzzy,
Are you able to extract that exe file yet ?
Nvm, fuzzy.
Found the camera.exe HERE.
Hi Fuzzy,
Where did you get the cabs from for:
Voice command 1.5 for Phone edition ->
Photo Contacts Pro v 3.01 ->
Cheers
Yohanson
i got Voice command 1.5 with IRC on #pocketwarez on EFNET servers
and as for photo contacts i couldn't get it free so i ended up buying it (first pocketpc software i have bought ever, and to be blunt it was worth it for something that is used every time you recieve a call)
I have also incresed the number of programs by upgrading to latest versions of SPB programs and also added SPB time and SPB weather and i still have no problems with Wifi. it starts first time every time.
I have just bought 5 more of these phones but O2 XDA IIs so i will reflash these the same and then flog on ebay.
every one else who has one of these phones is jelous because it has been reliable as a rock since i did this, and i have still not experieced any problems since the flash, and i have not performed one soft reset because of a problem. i know a lot of you wont believe it but its true it has been rock solid for me. so i will test the same procedure on the five phones when get them and see if there are any differences
Great stuff!
I did something a little similar here.
I took the latest firmware and Extended firmware.
I then went through it and deleted everything I don't need.
Splash Screen, Clearvue stuff, Cingular settings, album, etc etc etc.. Although these would be neat programs... let's be honest... when it comes to the Blue Angel, less is more.
So right now, I'm pretty stable.
I don't put anything in the Protected ROM. I think a lot of apps don't like it.
We'll see how this goes!
Mike
Since I do not want to hard reset - what are the files that I need to remove in order to completely uninstall IA Caller ID ? - it does not show up on my installed apps to remove so I need to do it manually - TIA

Hi, There is plenty in the Alpine sections about upgrading to the various ROM sections, just have a look or search. You will find the files here, ftp://xda:/Uploads/Alpine/
You can see what PUG ROM version I use, which I have found to be very good.
Sometime ago I uploaded all the cab files for your Carrier Settings, just copy cab to XDA IIi and tap to run, after the cab has installed the settings, it will delete itself, so make sure you keep a copy for future use.

The latest PUG upgrade is here, ftp://ftp.xda-developers.com/Uploads/Alpine/O2_Roms__Camera_Fixed_Pug
There are 2 files here, one has all the unneccessary 02 software outstripped and the other with all the 02 software included.
Once downloaded, extract to a folder on your desktop (or anywhere on your PC). Make sure your PDA is connected via the cradle and Activesync. Goto the folder you have extracted the files to on your PC, click to run MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe, just click OK, then you should see a message saying it is checking your Device, your devices screen should go blank (Although you will see some dark text including the word Serial on your PDA)
You should then get a screen saying what ROM version you have and the New version, press ok then a screen will pop up saying checking device, the common thing to happen here is it will stop in this screen, what 5 mins if it doesn't change then don't touch your PDA, CTRL-Alt-DEL on your PC keyboard to bring up Task Manager, select the Process Tab and look for the file name MaUpgradeUt_noID, highlight it with one click and then press End Process button, go back to the folder and run MaUpgradeUt_noID again follow the screen instructions again and then it will update this time, indicated by a install bar screen, it will take about 20mins to complete.
Once updated remove your PDA from its cradle and hold the Power Button down and at the same time press the softreset hole with your Stylus, this will Hard Reset (Factory Settings) your device, depending on the version you have installed follow instructions on the PDA, it will install some more files which take 5 to 10 mins to install. Thats it you device is now updated.
For your carrier settings goto http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=26463, there you will find the CAB files for your Phone Carrier (remember there is a file for PAYT and Contract for each Carrier, download the correct one for you), download the correct one for you and copy to your PDA, tap to run and your correct MMS/GPRS/WAP settings are then installed. Very Happy
**Please Note before you update your PDA. Please copy anything you want to keep on your PDA to your PC, don't worry about SD storage or the other Perminent Storage area as the update leaves these untouched. If you want to save your Contacts and or your Appointments and Tasks then goto Settings on your PDA select second Tab and then select Perminent Save, tick your selection and tap OK, then once you have carried out the update go back to Perminant Save and tick boxes you want restored and then tap OK, this function will dynamically keep your backup upto date, so you can use this anytime.
Phew, hope this helps.
I have tried all teh CAB files, and all the individual settings, to get full GPRS working on my O2 PAYT SIM.
After 2 emails to o2's technical department (which at least they answered within 24 hours) I was assured that the reason I couldnt connect is the APN whould be set to mobile.o2.co.uk - but that ONLY worked on contract plans.
They categorically stated that PAYT O2 ONLY features WAP GPRS, i.e. those small WAP-sites suited to mobile phones, and not the 'full deal' (ie web browsing, irc, MSN MEssenger etc)
...so, after a LONG time with O2 PAYT, I am now a Vodafone customer with a Vodafone PAYT SIM!
I can surf the web, join my irc channels, use MSN Messenger, the works, and they emailled me the correct settings the very same day I emailled them to ask for them too.
Joe Pinball
now a happy Vodafone GPRS internet user!
Hi,
just got an 2nd hand xda IIi earlier on today and seem somewhat shafted as i only have macs and no pcs, been looking arround for the last few hours to find some form of sync software which doesnt cost
can anyone tell me how to update the rom from a mac?
cheers
Ok,
so im guessing from spending hours searching the forums here last night unless im willing to buy pocketmac or missing sync there is nothing.
think i will use a virtual pc *sigh*
roll on the x86 mac hardware.
Mac OS is based on BSD. I believe there are scripts floating around here in perl that any decent *nix flavour should run. Perhaps some of these might be able to help you.
if you can run a Virtual PC with access to USB ports on the Mac, I'd reckon that would be the easiest (!) approach to adding Activesync for syncing files etc & installing any applications, as all of the pocket PC apps' installers are also windows-based.
Joe
had a long look for perl stuff and didnt find much so got virtual pc installed now. just got pugs rom on the xda and the speed has incresed (it doesn't feel as slugish anymore) wifi signal is a lot better, but i still seem to have BT issues, wonder if thats something to do with my headset though.. sounds like bad reception sometimes even though the phone is only in my coat pocket.

To download it, you must log into the site first. Then the link to the download is displayed. Download it to somewhere on your PC.
Take out the SIM of your Vario
Synchronise with PC via activesync
Copy enablerapi.cab to your PDA device (file from lokiwiz zip folder, in utilities folder. It is a zip file and not to be confused with enablerapi.bat)
Run enablerapi.cab from your device
Then run lokiwizmsl.bat from your PC, let it run in the DOS window
DON’T CLOSE THE DOS WINDOW
If successful, you’ll see your SIM unlock code – write it down
Now insert a new SIM card and enter that number to unlock your phone
Once complete, remove SIM card and re-insert your original SIM
You’re done
Hard Resetting MDA Vario
There are different severities of hard resetting your MDA vario. Which one you use depends on what you are trying to achieve. If your phone is stuck and wont let you play, try the hard core resets (progress from method 1 (less sever) to method 3 (most severe). If it’s just a bit slow, try the soft reset.
HARDCORE RESET 1
start>settings>system tab> Clear Storage
This will still clear all your data and all the programs you have loaded onto your device. You’ll need to start all over again.
HARDCORE RESET 2
I hold the Comm and Voice Button (top two buttons on the side) AND the camera button (bottom right). Keep them pressed in and hit the reset with your stylus. Keep pressed in and let go of the stylus. Release when you see the following message:
PRESS Send to restore factory default,
SEND is the green lift up phone button on the left
It will do a brief format and restore to factory settings.
HARDCORE RESET 3
If your MDA wont budge with HARDCORE RESET 1 or 2, try this:
Enter Bootloader, - hold the "camera" (bottom right) and briefly press the reset button, don't release "camera" until you can see colour screen, connect USB cable, and start to re-flash the ROM (download the latest flash rom update from http://t-mobile.iris-global.com/download_manager_mda_vario.html
SOFT RESET METHOD 1
This is the lightest of the reset methods. This is the one to use if you want to reset your device without having to re-install all your personal programs and data
Simply press the reset hole with your stylus on the right hand side of the MDA device.
Essential and Non-Essential Programs
See at the end of this document for a guide to some good programs “out there”. Try and decide which you feel are essential must haves and which are not necessary but useful (non-essential). Make two columns on an A4 sheet because this will come useful when setting up you Vario as detailed below.
Setting Up Your Vario for the First Time
1. Unlock your SIM card as above if you ever plan on using it on another network – If you got your phone from T-mobile, it’s likely that they’ve locked it so that you stay with them. However, it is your phone and it’s not illegal to unlock it: so unlock it in case you want to use it with another mobile network provider or even use a different local SIM card for instance when you are on holiday in Spain or somewhere (much cheaper way of making calls whilst abroad)
2. Install all the ESSENTIAL programs you will always want
3. Tweak the settings of all the programs you use eg setting Mobile Word to store documents on the storage card rather than eat away at your valuable device storage space. A full list of tweaks for programs I use can be found in the “Program Configuration” section at the end of this document.
4. Now BACKUP that device using software like SPB Backup so that you can always reset your device to this point if you ever get “stuck”. Call it something like “BACKUPESSENTIALPROGSANDTWEAKS”. ENSURE ALL BACKUPS ARE STORED ON THE SD CARD. With a program like SPB Backup, the backups are stored as self executable files on the storage card so that when your MDA goes pear shaped, you can simply reset it, insert your SD card and click on the back up file to restore your device without having to even load SPB backup again! How cool is that? Especially when you are on the move.
5. Then install the Registry Wizard program to help you tweak your PDA phone. You can download it here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=39725&highlight=registrywizard
but you have to have logged into the site to see the downloadable files.
This really is a super program that you’ll be glad to have installed. However, I found that if you change the default input from keyboard to something else, your device may lock itself; leave it at keyboard and everything should be Ok.
To install, download the latest version or RegistryWizard AND the OpennetCF programme to your storage card. These are cab files and they might appear like zip files. Insert the SD card back into the device and navigate to where you stored them using your device’s file explorer (or something similar). First install the OpennetCF program (bottom of the list of the downloadable files in the link above) into the device memory. Second install the latest version (1.0T) of the RegistryWizard to the device memory. You install them simply by clicking on them. Once installed, soft reset the device (
Now tweak it as required
6. Install the camera patches – to make your camera work better
You can find the files on these links: (again, you need to be logged in to see the downloadable files)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/download.php?id=10524 : for the camera fix which gets rid of any speckling (a permanent fix that remains on hard resetting)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/download.php?id=10396 : a fix to make the camera image more sharper (needs re-installing after any hard reset)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=45123 : a list of discussions about these two fixes
The camera will work best on the auto setting and much better than before.
If you know how to registry tweak, consider this:
Increase camera frames per second: this tweak will let you increase the frames per second of the video camera to make more fluent movies:
HKey Local Machine\Software\HTC\Camera\ReParam\MP4Large (or Medium or Small).
Change the FrameRate value from 10 (default) to 19. Above 19 it is laggy .. so don’t go above it.
7. Synchronise your device with your PC to load calendar, diary and contacts.
8. Alter active sync settings to how you want them eg Tools>options>email; set to 2 weeks, 5Kb, max 50Kb attachments, Click OK. PDA will re-synchronise
9. Consider backing up again after this point. Call it something like Backupstage2. If your device causes problems for what ever reason, you now have two options where you can reset your device to.
10. After that, you can start installing programs that you’d like to “play” with. If things go wrong or the system slows down, no worries you have a backup of the essential ones anyway.
A Note on the Two Backups
You might be wondering why the need for the two types of back up. Let me make this clear: you only need to do these backups ONCE. The two back ups then give you the flexibility of restoring to whichever point you want to when the need arises. Don’t ever delete these three backups.
Having said this though, don’t forget to regularly back up your device just to keep the most up to date back up at hand in case your battery goes dead and you simply want to restore it back to the last configuration (with email, calendar and contacts data). SPB Backup utility is ideally placed for this.
Resetting Your Device – if it starts to play up
1. Consider a soft reset, if this fails then do a hard reset (details above)
After the hard reset:
2. Run your back up program eg “BACKUPESSENTIALPROGSANDTWEAKS” ( to re-install all your ESSENTIAL programs
3. Then install the registry wizard program to help you tweak your PDA phone
4. Install camera patches (if you’ve installed the de-speckler before, u don’t need to do this particular one again)
Remember, install OpennetCF cab file first into the device memory; second install the latest version (1.0R) of the RegistryWizard.
Now tweak it as required
5. Synchronise your device with your PC
6. Voila! Your ready to go.
1. Essential Programs – all on www.handango.com
Program Location to Save to Notes
Pocket Informant DEFAULT DEVICE Great diary, contacts, tasks program; use international version
SPB Pocket Plus DEFAULT DEVICE for the X close button utility
Solvoed EngSpa Ultralingua SD CARD Spanish Advanced Dictionary
Paragon Spanish Sound Gold SD CARD Spanish Sound Module for the dictionary
SPB GPRS monitor DEFAULT DEVICE Monitor your data transfer when browsing the web to ensure you don’t exceed your monthly limit
SPB Backup ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL SD CARDSimply the best backup utility – backs up registry, PDA settings and programs all into one little executable program that you can save on your SD card and restore without even needing SBP backup loaded when your PDA goes funny
Vidya Pocket Registry Editor DEFAULT DEVICE Necessary for making the registry tweaks outlined below. Simplifies registry editing.
OMAP overclock ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIALDEFAULT DEVICE The MDA Vario has a TI OMAP processor running at 180 MHz. With this utility, improve performance by increasing it to max 240 Hz (some say 264Hz is the upper limit). Read instructions below; need to add an instruction to the startup menu to ensure it always runs at the set rate on soft-resetting the MDA (rather than defaulting back to 180 MHz)
Memmaid Tweaking program DEFAULT DEVICE Again, needed for processor clocking, BUT has a great clean utility to clean out all the crap that cumulatively builds up with use.
Resco File Explorer SD CARD Super program for finding the files you want. Much better than the file explorer in WM5
SMARTSKEY ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL DEFAULT DEVICE A nifty little program that enables you to operate your MDA with one hand without the need for getting out the stylus. It does this by reconfiguring the buttons on your PDA so that a quick press of them does what they already do but a longer sustained press adds new functionality.
Read instructions below; the program already has an inbuilt startup instruction to set it to restart on reboot; smartskey will automatically set the OMAP clocking facility to 240; this means you can install OMAP and let smartskey do the tweaking.
NON ESSENTIAL PROGRAMS:
Home pocket mobile inventory
My Last Cigarette
Speedreader (heavy and slow on CPU) vs fast reader
Vito sketch artist
Lexionary/English Pro Dictionary
Bible
Turboinvaders
Microsoft Arcade Pack

OMAP Overclock
Instructions for overclocking Wizard (tested on Imate K-JAM). Use at your own risk!
1. Download the following file and unzip. Save the OmapClock.exe to your \Windows folder on your device: http://forum.xda-developers.com/download.php?id=9181
2. Open File Explorer on your device and open Omapclock.exe. Find the maximum speed that your device will handle without locking up. On each test, test all applications you use. This is important because once you place this in your startup, it will load up automatically and could cause your device to stop responding! 240Mhz works for me. Suspending the device at this point will cause the speed to be reset back to default. Execute Windows\OmapClock.exe again if this happens and you want to continue testing.
3. Download and install Resco File Explorer 2005: http://resco.net
4. Open Resco Explorer and go to the \Windows folder. Locate the OmapClock.exe file and hold the stylus on this file until menu pops. Choose “Copy”.
5. Now browse to \Windows\Startup then hold stylus in an empty area and when menu pops, choose paste shortcut.
6. Hold the stylus on the newly created OmapClock shortcut and choose Properties then click the Shortcut tab.
7. Target should be: “\Windows\OmapClock.exe” –clock 240
Change the 240 to the clock speed you tested in step 2 above.
8. Soft reset and test. Suspending the device will reset the device back to the default speed. This is a secondary test to make sure the device does not lock up!
9. Download and install DinarSoft MemMaid: http://www.handango.com/PlatformProd...23995&R=123995
10. Open MemMaid and choose the Notification queue button/tab on the bottom (second from left) then click the ADD button.
11. For Program, click the browse button and browse to the shortcut you created in steps 5-7. The location of the shortcut is \Windows\Startup.
12. From the event dropdown choose “The device woke up”.
13. Click Add.
14. Soft reset and you are done. The Clock speed will remain at the specified speed you specified in step 7 even when the device comes out of suspend.

SmartsKeys
Enables mapping holding softkeys to close apps, open start menu, turn volume slider into scroll slider. Absolutely, the best software I've used on my device. Makes one handed use a breeze. Must register with XDA Developers to download.
The following functionality can be enabled by running the program:
• Tap soft key: orginal Soft Key functions
• Tap and hold left Soft Key: Start Menu
• Tap and hold right Soft Key: Close/OK button
• Volume Slider at the left = Page Up and Page Down
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=41060&sid=fe9919e547cea5c146f1de0d7156a30a
To reset to default, soft reset the phone.
To make the program run after reset, put a shortcut at /windows/startup
Smartskey now includes a configuration file so you can make your own settings like which Soft Keys to alter, whether to use the Close/OK function to really close or only hide a program and an exception list for the Close/OK function.
That’s all great, but the best enhancement is the integration of the OMAP overclock program. From Smartskeys configuration you can overclock your processor to a configurable speed at start up, and even better, have that automatically activated after your devices comes back up from a soft-reset.
You can find Smartskey on
http://htcwizard.westlands.org/wp-content/uploads/2006/02/smartskey0.4.zip .
It includes the program itself, the configuration file and a readme.pdf . It does not include the OMAP overclok program, but I have it here for you:
http://htcwizard.westlands.org/wp-content/uploads/2006/02/OmapClock.exe
2. More MDA Vario Settings to Alter:
Word
Open Word
Menu>Options
Check the box “Save to storage card”
Other Settings
Check the box “Remove from display” (start>settings>today)
Check box “Cleartype”
Start>Settings>Personal>Input>Word Completion>Uncheck “Suggest words when entering text”
Start>settings>Personal>Menus: select which 7 programs you want listing in the start menu
Start>settings>Personal>Owner Information>Set Stuff in Identification; also look at “Notes” and “Options” tabs
Start>Settings>Personal>Today>Items tab: Decide which programs you want in “Today” screen
start>settings>system tab>Regional Settings>Choose your location
Start>Settings>Systems Tab>Screen>Cleartype tab>Enable ClearType
Registry Tweaks
(If you have installed RegistryWizard, you don’t need to read this section as you can do it all easily from that program)
These are all quotes I've compiles from other forums. I think I've done most of these and they work. Select whichever you would like to apply to your MDA device. You're going to need a registry editor. I strongly recommend Vidya Pocket Registry Editor. After you have made all the changes you want, soft reset the device to get them to “kick in”.

Create the registry entry called EnableIndicator and assign the DWORD value of 1
After soft-resetting the device, an indicator will appear next to the keyboard icon on the bottom of the screen! Tapping the Shift key shows a "C" while tapping the Dot key shows a dot! Very cool!
Keep the GPRS Connection Active At All Times
Remember, you’re only paying for the amount of data that is transferred; so why not keep the GPRS connection active all the time rather than waiting 1-2 mins for the device to connect every time you want to browse the net? You don’t pay anything for an active GPRS connection when you are not in internet explorer.
HKLM\Comm\ConnMgr\Providers\{7C4B7A3...}\Connections\GPRS...\
change value "AlwaysOn" from 0 to 1
Store Internet Clutter on Your SD Card to Save Device Memory
Put IE cache on storage card instead of memory; this increases the performance of your device. This hack will increase your available ROM memory and people have reported storage gains of over 9 mb. You will need to have a storage card with some free memory installed to utilize this hack.
First open up internet explorer and navigate Menu>Tools>Options>Memory
Press the delete files button to clear the cache
Press delete the cache
Press delete the history
Then open up file explorer from the programs folder in the start menu.
Navigate to the Storage Card and make sure that you are in the base directory of the card.
Then create an I.E. folder and within that folder create a folder called “cache” and “history”
Open up a registry edit program
Navigate to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders\Cache"
Change the default value "\Windows\Profiles\Guest\Temporary Internet Files" to "\Storage_Card\ie\cache"
Change the other values in the Shell Folders section of the registry to the folders you created and then soft reset.
Be warned that you will create errors in I.E. if you do not have a storage card inserted with those directories on it while you are surfing from now on.

Turn On GPS Application (GPS not GPRS ie Navigation Stuff)
First of all, your MDA does NOT have GPS built-in; let's make that clear from the start.
However, Windows Mobile 5.0 includes a GPS Control Panel for ease of configuring Bluetooth GPS devices. This includes creating 'virtual ports' so that multiple programs can access the same NEMA GPS stream from said BT/GPS device. This is helpful for anyone who uses GPS for Navigation, War-Driving and lots of new emerging location-based programs which use GPS information available to your MDA.
Unfortunately, the Registry Wizard for tweaking the MDA available in this FAQ and over at xda-developers does not work with the T-Mobile ROMs. You have to manually edit the registry by following these instructions:
Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MASCHINE\ControlPanel\GPS Settings
Delete the DWORD marked "hide"
Add a DWORD called "Group" and give it the value of "2"
The GPS panel will now show up in your connection settings
***Note: You must delete 'Redirect' and 'Hide' keys completely***
Soft restart, wait 30 seconds, restart and viola, GPS Control Panel is now enabled.
NB 2=show; 1=hide GPS icon
How I set-up (after BT pairing with the GPS)
Open the new GPS Icon, I then set my GPS Settings on the MDA for 'GPS Program port:' to COM8 (the 'virtual port' for your programs to access the same GPS data) .
Then set the 'GPS hardware port:' to COM6.
Also set the Baud Rate to 9600 (default for my BT/GPS unit)
Check the box 'Manage GPS automatically'.
I'm using WiFiFoFum2, Socket MyNavigator and VisualGPSce to simultaneously run utilizing my BT GPS device. It works flawlessly.
Enable 802.11g WIFI Speed (rather than the default 801.11b)
For more info:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=38898
1) Locate the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMM\TNETWLN1\PARMS
2) Add the following key:
name: dot11SupportedRateMaskG
D value: 8
Glyph Cache
Your MDA uses a section of the memory called glyph cache to store your fonts' glyphs and other graphical outputs for things like gaming. You can modify standard graphic rendering so that games run more smoothly with faster graphics. Noted improvement especially for racing, action and arcade games.
Enable Cleartype in Landscape mode
Clear type smoothes the edges of screen fonts for many programs to make reading easier and make your device appear more slick. You can turn this on by going to Start>Settings>Systems Tab>Screen>Cleartype tab>Enable ClearType
However, if you view anything in Landscape mode (by opening the keyboard for instance); for some reason, landscape doesn’t work in this mode. To enable it in landscape mode too, do this to the registry
HKLM\System\GDI\ClearTypeSettings
Key: OffOnRotation (string)
Value: 0
(NB 0 = on; 1 = off)

OTHER USEFUL THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW
Changing the Clock
You can change out of 24 hour clock mode by going to regional settings and choosing a non-capitalized option like hh:mm:ss
Switching between vibrate and ring mode
Hold down the Comm Manager button for a second or two on the side of the device above the volume slider. This will toggle the unit between silent (with vibrate) and your regular ringer on settings.
What do the LED lights on the front indicate?
Left LED:
Blinking blue - bluetooth enabled
Blinking green - Wifi enabled
Right LED:
Blinking green - Phone enabled
Blinking orange - Battery Low
Solid orange - Charging Quote:
Note: the right led blinking orange could also mean that you have an alert in addition to the low battery. It is dependant on how you set up your notifications.
Installing Your Own Sounds for Ring Tones, Alarms and Notifications
You need to have a set of “ring tones” and “alarms and notification sounds” in two separate folders to begin with on your PC.
Make sure those in” ring tones” are in mp3 format
Make sure those in “alarms and notifications” are in wav format
Connect and synchronise your device with the computer
On your PC:
Open the ring tones folder
Copy the mp3 files you want
On ActiveSyn, Click on Explore>My Device>Windows>Rings Folder
Paste them there
On your PC:
Open the “sounds and notifications” folder
Copy the wav files you want
On ActiveSyn, Click on Explore>My Device>Windows
Paste them there
That’s it. Now you should see them all. If you can’t see one or two, it is probably because they are too big in size.
Also I neglected to mention that you can load them on the minisd card (obviously if you have one) to the root folder and they will work. To change it to your new ringone, go to settings > sounds and notifications > notifications tab > change the event to incoming call check play sound and select the sound
Bluetooth Messaging
I've seen people send and receive messages via bluetooth with regular phones like Nokia, and I was wondering whether this is possible with a T-Mobile Vario (Windows Mobile 5). Would I need to install any application for this? Thanks.
Well i think theyre not really sending SMS Messages.. these are actually Notes. You don´t need a program for it. Just create a new Note/Text-File and send it via Bluetooth!
I hope this document has proved useful.
this is a very very nice guide to wizard starters
That's great! Good work.
Superb!
This is great for new users!

1. Open the Drawer.
2. Place Manila Folder in the Drawer.
3. Close the Drawer.
Now it isn't always this easy. If there is securoty in place you will probably need a key or combination to unlock the Drawer before you can open it.
Also, these instructions assume that you have enough space in the Drawer for the Manila Folder and that you don't need to install any "Hanging Device" as it is already installed if needed.
Excellent read
This was a really helpful guide thanks so much for taking the time and care to produce something so readable and useful.
Two things don't make sense to me:
What is the benefit of having a backup that doesn't include my PIM data? Also, even if I could see the point I don't know how to do it. The moment I started installing my "essentials" was the moment that ActiveSync synced all of my PIM data.
Why backup before tweaking the registry? Wouldn't you want these included in the backup so that you only have to do them once?
reg editor on sd card?
do i install the registry editor on the sd card or directly on to the device?
thanks!
does it will work US T-Mobile MDA (not Vario)? thanks
I think we should all help and contribute to updating this. This is a VERY useful guide...as I've only had my MDA for 4 days and I'm learning more and more everday. ..

Either should be fine for programs like that. Generally anything that runs on the today screen should be installed directly to the device, most other programs are OK on a storage card. There are exceptions....best bet is to just give it a try

If u r still interested
Using "btCrawler" might be solution. Search for in this forum or google I do not remember right now..
That's great mehayuk!!
Very useful!
As you seem quite clued up with tweaks and stuff, u may be able to help me on a couple of other things. (I'm only a n00by!)
I'm left handed, so using the stylus on the scroll bar is fiddly. Is there a registry hack/tweak to swap it to the LHS?
Is there a program to manage GPRS/WIFI more effectively? When I use my mobile at home I connect it to my wifi network to browse the net or go on IM (if I can't be bothered booting up PC etc). Yet my phone still wants to connect to GPRS! Even tho it's got a perfectly good source for checking my emails/browsing etc....
Hope u/someone can help, and thanks again for the guide, you must've put a lot of effort in.
Chewy
Fantastic guide, thanks.
Matt (about 10 days old in the Wizard world - and already my wife hates me/it! lol)
You are a genius for taking the time to make such a long and detailed guide. I wish you had made it a few months before you did because I had to learn it all the hard way
A new user is always lost at first and this guide really puts them onto the right track. Good work!
Smartskey Quirk
For an otherwise outstanding product, you would think they could find a way to make the program memory resident (in other words, not have to be reset every time you do a soft reset). And no, I don't feel like spending more money for memmaid, I already bought more software than I should have to make this thing work the way I want it too.
How can I alter my registry to make this reload on bootup?
Smartskey Quirk
For an otherwise outstanding product, you would think they could find a way to make the program memory resident (in other words, not have to be reset every time you do a soft reset). And no, I don't feel like spending more money for memmaid, I already bought more software than I should have to make this thing work the way I want it too.
How can I alter my registry to make this reload on bootup?
smartskeys link is dead
hi. i"ve been trying to download smartskeys forever and it keeps giving me the "404 Not Found
The requested URL /wp-content/uploads/2006/02/smartskey0.4.zip was not found on this server."
incase it matters, I registered with xda and I'm signed in when i hit the download link. any suggestions?
thanks, adam
Background:
Installed WM5 with office, then installed office6 (my guess is that it is for WM6) and it worked, but after uninstalling it some files were left on the device (i'm a beginner so i do not know where to look - but i could see the application shortcut in programs).
I've reflashed my device with WM5 but surprise ... surprise, all my applications from the old install where there (office6 included); my guess is that all the registry is still in place.
Problem:
I need to remove office6 as it consumes storage; there'
s no entry in add/remove programs - because the application has been partially removed from wizard. I would even reflash BA again - but the must be some option or something to delete all contents.
Waiting for a suggestion !

you did not perform WM5 hard reset after reflashing read wiki for more information
Straight out of the WIKI.....
Hard Reset
Hold down the Power button (Top Right corner) and at the same time put your Stylus pen in the hole where it says “Reset” (Lower Left corner).
Hard Reset will delete all data you have put on the device, Programs, Settings, Mail, SMS, MMS, etc., so be careful and make a backup before doing this.
After a hard reset, you will have a complete clean new install of Windows Mobile on your device.
Things that are not deleted
* Data on \Storage Card
* Data in \Storage folder
No thats wrong! This will never work for WM5
But you were close -> there is "BlueAngel Windows Mobile 5.0 Home Page" in wiki...
On WM5 BA, soft reset, and when you see the 4 stripped colors, press now "record + camera"
You shall be able to see a menu with 3 selections.
The first one set to "no" and the last 2 to "yes"
once you did it, press the "mail" button to format the device.
Ok so as of last night my spb mobile shell, spb weather, the green phone button to get to the dialing pad to make a call does not work. The SPB menu i had added no longer shows. It just stays on the old today screen it had before the add ons. No longer have the extra add-ons as mentioned above and above all it says i have no service so i cant recieve calls or anymore texts. Looked in the com manager and its not in airplane mode or anything. The files for those add ons are still on my device though. The contacts have dissappeared from my text messages that were there from before this happened and now just the phone numbers show. I have tried and tried and searched and searched but no luck in finding a solution. If anyone could help me in figuring out what maybe happened and what i could do that would be so helpful. I have an AT&T Tilt unlocked to Tmobile. Did it relock itself? I went out with a friend and the phone was in a tiny clutch purse so it could be that it was pressing buttons while in there but i have the S2u2 lock app added which is the only thing that works still. The keyboard i added no longer shows up either but as i mentioned its all still installed on the phone. Did a reset with the tiny button at the bottom but nothing comes back up. When its loading back up a whole bunch of error messages come up in regards to some of the apps saying its is not signed with a trusted certificate or one of its components cannot be found. I tried syncing it to my laptop but the Windows Mobile Device just comes up with an error when its connecting it. I'd hate to loose everything because as many know it takes time in researching and learning and downloading all the tweaks for a phone. I have sprite backup but its not even showing the last backup i did. Please help me and direct me on what to do if you think you know what happened then that would help too. Thanks.
UPDATE
OK so I had to use my sprite backup create a backup so i could keep all of my files and then hard reset the phone. Now...question...I drug the SPB Mobile Shell, SPB Weather, Thumbapp Calendar, Kaiser Tweak, keyboard skin and Windows Mobile skin files from off the phone and just placed them on my laptop desktop. Now that I am starting with a clean slate, the service works (still unlocked ), I can use the green call button to make a call and the windows mobile device manager is recognizing and bringing up my phone on my laptop. Will i be able to drag those folders with the cabs etc from my laptop into my programs folder in my device from the WM Device manager or do i have to actually add the zip files and open in the phone?? In other words (in case im unclear) do i have to redownload all the cabs zip files for all the mods i made and open and load those into the phone, or can i just drag the folders from the previous load from my laptop onto my computer? Thanks for all your help.
P.S. after i hard reset, i restored that backup file and SPB menu still a no show, no other keyboard comes up aside from original and dialer is the default. So I hard reset again to start from scratch. Thanks
