Send Expansys Diamond Back For Refund? - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

Hi all, first post so hello. I've been reading various reports on here and elsewhere about expansys' so called UK version.
Will the official UK phone be any different/better? I'm a bit concerned and wondered whether to send it back and wait for Tmobile to release it.
What you reckon?

Return
If you purchase a T-Mobile it will be locked not unlocked and I beleive the number will be HTC P3702 or 3.

The UK version will have more up-to-date software (HTC have delayed the release date to apply software fixes). Also, the Expansys Diamonds have been imported from HK, so it's not clear what will happen about the warranty.
If I were you, I'd play with the Diamond for a bit, then send it back to Expansys and try to get my money back. Then I'd buy an unlocked Diamond whenever it is properly released in the UK (probably sometime between the 15th and 25th) for much cheaper from somewhere like Play.com, TotalPDA or INKINO (I can't believe Expansys are charging even more than INKINO).

I think thats expensive. Its probably cheaper for you to get it offline (totalpda 410, play.com about the same), and get some other phone for free with contract and ebay that.. or get just a contract at a discounted price from these online stores.

Thanks. How would i stand with returning the phone and cancelling the contract? Is it 14days to cancel? Would i get my £120 refunded?

yes you will get all money back maybe a restock fee will apply, but most contract provides should not charge this.

You'll get a total refund. You're covered by distance selling regulations. Some people call this a cooling off period, but its actually to protect you from shoddy descriptions, since you can't physically see the product.
This 'cooling off' period is a myth, and doesnt automatically apply to phone contracts by any law. All networks build it into their T&C when you buy direct, but be very careful, some retailers like carephone warehouse for example are agents for say O2, and so have their own contract, which has no cooling off. If you walked into carephone warehouse store and signed up you'd be outta luck. Online, you could use distance selling regulations to cancel (yeah they still apply because its seen as a product).
If in dought, always buy online (with a decent credit card). Sounds funny doesnt it? only a coupla years ago we would be advising the opposite! But you have alot more protection now online and with a credit card.
Refuse to pay any restocking fee if they ask you for one say its not a UK device as advertised. All else fails, call your credit card company and let them deal with it

There's also a power seller on ebay eCell or something for 400 quid including postage. It'll be another import, but at that price i do think it may be worth considering for some people.

How can you get the best price for the Tilt?

Hey guys, well with the Tilt coming out I want to get the best price, but I see that the best prices are giving to new customers. I'm already an AT&T customer and have a long time before I can upgrade. I currently have the 8525.
How can I get the Tilt for around $350? I don't know anyone at a store. Has anyone ever bought a phone as a "new" customer and then cancelled the service right away? What fees are payed and how exactly is this done?
Any advice?!
Sorry Man thats just a cheap question to ask... You get what you pay for is the best lesson in life. I dont think any here will help you plan BS
Your best bet is to wait 4-6 months after AT&T releases the tilt and then look to Ebay...

You can cancel the service, but seeing as how you will have a new contract they will charge you the cancel fee. If you cannot wait then you need to purchase the phone at whatever price they give you. Personally, I'm on a family plan and will be using the upgrade credit from another line to get the phone @ $299.

Cmon you don't get what you pay for with phones, -its a big game. Were all paying different prices for the same product.
I got screwed out of 200 bucks on an iphone for my wife because of 48 hrs.
We didn't create the game, the phone companies create the game were just trying to play it. if they just offered it for a price thats one thing, but there are 10 different ways to get this thing at a different price.
easiest way is someone else said, ad a phone an a family plan and reduce the other line to minimum. you ad 10 bucks a month to the bill and get the incentive. Basically your financing the incentive as you will pay 240$ over 2 years with the add on plan.
one thing you can do is to register for a business license and get a sellers permit then you can buy it from manufacturer at cost. just a thought...

I do have a connection at a cingular store and one thing I learned is that they really only need about 6 months into the 2 year to upgrade you. I have never waited for upgrading. You have to be connected though which means go talk to a rep and make a friend and then bring a red bull in the next time as a peace offering
That's not all you need. Good luck getting the manufacturer to give you a good price on one unit.
The best prices are usually for corporate customers, and by corporate I don't mean "business license", I mean "big company that buys MANY phones and service contracts". Basically the best price you can get is a matter of luck and who you know - There are usually no extra tricks available. Either you're eligible for certain deals or you're not.
amazon has it for $50 after rebates with a new service...
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000WSP16I
You might find brand new tilt at ebay for around $370. (Sim locked though.) It is not easy to find though. I watched a few of them. The cheapest I watched was $365 for a brand new tilt sim locked.
You can easily unlocked yourself.
Sales / Rebates
You could wait for one of AT&T's sales to buy it at $250.00 with a $100.00 rebate. Then call AT&T and if you get a nice representative, ask if they will process the rebate for you; which, if they do, may take the shape of a 'courtesy credit', bringing you down to $150.00. Then, fill out the rebate form, mail it in, and wait. Once you get the rebate, the phone will have been $50.00.
I've been looking for a good deal on a tilt for a while. It doesn't even have to be a still but just a good price. On AT&T site its not that good of a dea plus the fact I have to renew my contract which I'm only 2 months away from being out of.
Listen, all you have to do is go to amazon.com. They will sell you the phone for 200 dollars! All you have to do is either sign up for a two year contract with att or renew your contract. Also you cant break your contract or change your service package for 6 months. I did it and I have a very nice tilt....Filled with a whole bunch of stuff. It would be filled with more if people would response a little faster on this damn forum.
I upgraded from my old razr to a tilt and i got it straight up for $185 with no data plan or anything from the cingular store.

i believe at&t has a 30 day price match offer that includes them dropping their own prices, so you should be able to get the difference refunded if your in one of those states.

I await your findings. I live in AZ and I just bought my Tilt like 3 weeks ago so I fall in the 30 days like you
Before I bought mine I asked them if by some chance the Tilt went on sale for cheaper than I got it for (399.99) would they price match. They assured me that it would not go on sale so I insisted the "what if". They agreed that if it did go on sale by some weird chance (like black friday weekend) then they would do a price match.
Still I'm curious what you find out.
Thanks!
TILT price match
Hi Guys!
I got ordered my tilt on 8th and got it on 12th. I think i will be eligible for Price match. I got it on a forced upgrade for 592 USD with tax. Hope i can save some money on it.
Please post your opinions and findings..

I live in St. Louis, MO area, although i'm not on one of those states listed, i bought my phone about 2 weeks ago from an At&t store, not a an authorized dealer and actually store by at&t and that was the first thing i asked my rep was what if the price in it drops the day after Thanksgiving will they offer me that, and she said yes, they have a 30 day price match, also i told them about the amazon.com offer of 200bux plus a 25.00 rebate for a total of 175 for the phone w/a 2 year contract, and they did a pretty close offer of 250.00 and i dont have to pay the 36.00 activation fee, so basically i paid 214 2 weeks ago for it, sure the amazon deal is cheaper, but the in person service is something i dont mind paying a little more for incase there's a mess up w/something i can go back to the store, which is only 5 minutes from me and talk to someone in person and get everything right.
So I just got back from the AT&T store and they gave me an additional $150 credit to my bill since I puchased the phone less than 30 days ago!
Anyone that has purchased their AT&T Tilt less than 30 days ago needs to contact their original point of puchase today and tomorrow only and they will recieve a 50% credit to thier purchase!
SCORE!
Wonder how that works if you bought it from the AT&T web site...
Call customer service. They might have to do a return repurchase maneuver.
Thats what the AT&T rep told me when I called in before visiting my local store where I originally purchased the unit.
What if you bought it from a retailer like CompUSA or from a website like Newegg? Will they still offer you a discount on it or do the retailers have to do that?
I spoke to an ATT rep who told me that if I go into any ATT owned store I can redeem the credit. I hope that's true because I bought the phone on my parent's side of town - hours away.
150$ Refund!!!
I called att sales today and they refunded my credit card 150$ however I didnt qualify for the 100$ mail in refund though.

what did you say to them?!
I went down to the ATT store I bought mine from and I didn't qualify for the 50% off because-
a) I didn't have the data plan added on my phone (39.99 $/month)
I would have qualified if I just added the data plan on for that month BUT it would have screwed up my super mega ultra ridiculously low plan that already has unlimited internet access.
Was anyone able to pull off the half off without having the pda connect plan that is 39.99? If so, can you PM me the phone number of the ATT store so I can call them and see if they will credit me?

Diamond for £399.99 from Play.com

I have been waiting patiently to get one on a contract from O2 but I have not heard any news regarding the UK release and I'm beginning to lose patient + the price from Play.com is extremely attractive.
Perhaps I will wait until the iPhone 3G comes out in the hope that the price will come down further
It's £394.99 with this offer...
Tempted to go for it - but then I'm due for a renewal soon with T-Mobile.
Anyone know whether the upgrade from T-Mobile will be free or do they evaluate each case individually?
Just a friendly warning, my experience with Play.com is extremely bad... When they said they sent stuff out, they actually hadn't, delivery weeks later than agreed to, unfriendly/unknowledgable support, etc.
Then again, that might have been a fluke, instead of their general way of dealing with things. After that one time I never ordered from them again
I find Play.com pretty good for stock accuracy! It just ussually takes an extra day due to being in Jersey. I am still waiting on the batteries, but everytime it gets to the release date they change it!! very annoying, But ussually when it says in stock it is!! in my experience anyway!!
If i hadn't already got one! i'd defo be ordering from here!!

I have been using Play.com for the last 8 years and never experience a single problem with them. All my orders were always delivered on time (witin 5 working days), I reckon your case must of been a one-off
You should give them a second chance
I've just replied in another thread regarding play.com
Since they are based in Jersey (a tax free zone) the customers are liable for paying all VAT taxes if the phone gets held up at customs. This is clearly stated in their Terms & Conditions.
2ndly, I called HTC UK the other day and they told me play.com isn't an authorised dealer so you won't get full UK warranty. I'm serious.. a girl at HTC told me...
be careful guys.
well i got a gray import from HK and he gives a 12 month guarantee lol my HTC guarantee is worth nothing anyway after i flashed it, so i will that the £60 i saved (it was about 340 GBP) a spend it if anything does go wrong...

From HM Revenue & Customs website:
Goods purchased from traders in Jersey and Guernsey
Customs has in place with the Jersey and Guernsey Customs and Postal authorities a special scheme that allows many of their traders to collect and pay to UK Customs import VAT on sales they make to UK customers. These traders, who are approved by the Jersey and Guernsey authorities, are allocated a unique authorisation number and this should be stated on the outside of your package. Under these arrangements you will be asked to pay import VAT, if applicable, at the time you make your purchase, and will not have to pay any additional costs such as import VAT, or the Royal Mail handling fee, when you receive your goods.
Unless I misread it, I believe you don't need to pay any import VAT on it.

Sorry, but she's talking crap. HTC offer a global warranty for all their own branded devices, but it doesn't cover shipping costs, and this even covers the ones sold on grey import by expansys.
So worst case scenario, you have to pay for the courier to Milton Keynes and back....not exactly the end of the world!
And as for Play.com, I have been using them for years, and bought all sorts of stuff from them. never had to pay import duties, even on an xbox 360, and only ever had one problem, which the remedied as soon as the item was back in stock. Play are actually one of the better and more trustworthy online retailers out there.....
And besides, if your address is registered in the UK, they charge you VAT anyway....they seem to be one of the ones under that customs scheme mentioned above somewhere.
Dammit.... was just on Play.com, credit card in hand and its gone up to £429! Ragin, I missed the offer!
Still cheaper than most places though!

DanGlee, i just saw it for £410 on http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/product/16495.htm

Too late...
I went and ordered it from HandTec (www.handtec.co.uk) because it uses Google Checkout, makes my life that little easier!
It cost £425. So not too bad, most places are all around that price...
I'll be on this site now for the next week after I get it going through the forum and configuring it... I hope since I ordered it so late its the latest ROM!
Look forward to plenty of "OMGs this phone is wrecking my head" and "OMG I love it" replies
(word of warning, I'm coming from a Motorolla KRZR to Diamond WM6.1... there will be a learning curve... but it can't possibly be any worse that the yoke I have now!)

I agree with that, and the Diamond has 2 years cover from what I read.
With all this glob-trotting around it makes sense to offer worldwide cover.

Well if they are uk spec then it will have the latest rom on it but like yourself i was a noob coming from a nokia n95 8gb symbian phone but ive enjoyed learning about this phone.
Just make sure the first thing you do is APPLY THOSE TWEAKS in the tweak thread...it will make it a hell of alot more better. ITs a shame that you have to apply those tweaks to make this phone really shine..should come like that but it seems like HTC just wanted to get the phone out asap.
Feel free to ask any questions if you have any problems...its the only way your gonna learn but before i got my phone..i read through most of the threads here so when i got the Diamond...i had a bit of a head start.
BTW thats a damn good price you got yours for..i paid £445 for mine from clove.
Doe anyone know if HTC diamond sold by play.com is a UK version or a grey import?

Should I purchase from AT&T or LetsTalk?

AT&T will charge me $200 for a Tilt. I can sign up for AT&T service and get it for FREE at LetsTalk.com. Is there any reason NOT to purchase at LetsTalk. Do I get the same warranty, 30 day trial, AT&T tech support, swap out if phone goes bad??
If you are buying AT&T service then Yes you will get tech support regardless of where you purchased it from. Did you read online reviews on LetsTalk. I would type in Letstalk reviews and google and read their reputation.
I'm not sure if you'll get the 30 days. Did you read the fine print?
I have purchased phones from let's talk before and was satisfied. There was an argument over whether or not we made a one or two year contract but that was settled. But for the ridiculous price reduction you can get on that site, I would say it is prob worth it. I am pretty sure there is no 30 day trial though...
As of right now, you can also choose to not add a data plan, which is definitely a plus in my opinion.
Hope this helps
Get it from Let's Talk. There is no point in spending more money for the same exact thing. I just bought my Tilt from letstalk about 3 weeks ago. I'm satisfied. The only thing to consider is they charged me taxes (website said to CA and TX residents only) based on it's actual value which came out to be about $37. If you'd like, I can send you a "Refer a Friend" email and it says we should both get $25 from your order.
Also, FYI for anyone else interested. My work is part of the ATT premier and I qualify for a discount. I've added my number and the website did says I was accepted (have to wait 2 billing cycles to verify). Some people were concerned if they bought from Letstalk.com they would not qualify for their works discount. So far for me it looks good.
I've bought phones from letstalk and never had a problem but I never tried to retrun anything.
I did try buying a Tilt from Newegg with AT&T service, AT&T didn't work at my house so I returned it, they refunded me the money for the handset but didn't cancel the account. I found this out when I got my second bill, after 30 days. AT&T was awsome allowing me to pay just what I used and not charging me an ETF but unless you know if it will work where you want it i would stick with the local AT&T store.
I saved a few dollars by buying from Newegg but it could have been a costly mistake.

My (not so good) Handtec experience

Hi,
I ordered a Nexus 4 from Handtec on the release day. The amount was withdrawn from my credit card immediately.
A couple of days ago my order was cancelled and I got a refund. However due to conversion rates I lost 20 EUR.
This is not a big deal but the explanation from handtec was that it's nothing they can do about it.
1. They can deliver what I ordered. Do not take orders for products they can't deliver.
2. Do not withdraw the amount until the item has been shipped.
When I sent the above they answered by closing my support ticket. Disturbing!
I can live with this but it's a matter of principle. I will not order anything from Handtec again and I would recommend everyone to stay away from Handtec.
BR/Svanteson
That's the risk when buying in other currencies. The opposite happened to me, it's just the way money works.
The companies are only obligated to make the refund in the currency they operate with, and the amount they charged, so...

Bad Experience with Handtec
Shortly before Christmas 2012 I purchased a (alleged unlocked) Galaxy S3 from Handtec. This was the fourth phone I had purchased from them and until then having had no problems had no reason to contact them after purchase.
The phone was set up for Virgin Media Internet France (which took a factory re-boot to uninstall). The phone, from what Samsung, Virgin Media and others told me was that it was most likely that it had been previously installed with a Virgin SIM card – a French one at that! The phone had been set up in French, the instructions were in French and it had a continental plug. It is my opinion that it was purchased by Virgin to be sold as a locked phone through their French outlets (which went bust last week) and that job lots were sold off to wholesalers.
The person I spoke to at their call centre told me that I should have been told it was an import (definitely not told!!) and I should have looked on the web where it was displayed (I placed the order by phone). The manager was off hand and I was left with the definite impression that it was “We don’t really care about your problems”.
Would I recommend them? Before this I had done so but not anymore – my advice is to pay a little more and purchase it from a store where you can go back and see them face to face.
I had thought of reporting them to Trading Standards but, hopefully, it this makes someone think twice about buying from them then they will have lost not only my custom but others.
