After trying off and on for the last couple of months it just seems like you cannot get a reliable PPTP VPN connection on a Tilt using EDGE/3G/H. I have tried the biggest tips everyone has--registry hacks, adding intranet address exceptions, and using isp.cingular but nothing works for me.
Because WM connects the VPN when on WiFi when you point PIE to an added intranet address, but doesn't even try when connected over the antenna, I'm thinking this is more of a software issue than an AT&T network issue. So before I go down the painful path of getting my Tilt running WM 6.1, has anyone had any good success with PPTP VPN in WM 6.1 over 6.0?

I'm having a bit of an issue with pptp on the Kaiser. The handset is provided by Vodafone so it's branded a v1615, I've not flashed it with anything yet.
I can create and establish a pptp connection via 3g to my server successfully, however as soon as I either go to messaging (setup for imap to the server's internal IP) or PIE to access OWA the pptp connection just drops.
Anyone any ideas?!
Bit of an update - in Messaging the network to use was wap which had an incorrect access point set. I changed it to work, set the access point to internet (I'm on Voda UK), username & password of web.
Then I created the pptp connection under VPN for this (the work) connection.
Now in messaging when I hit send/receive it dials the 3G connection, succeeds, then establishes the pptp connection successfully. And stays connected.
Only, still no mail - it reports back unable to retrieve new messages or contact server.
On the server, it shows there is a ras client and gives it's IP (obtained by dhcp).
I can't ping it (the kaiser) through the vpn.
I can't get imap to work through the vpn from the kaiser to my server.
I can't get RDP to work through the vpn
I can't get PIE to access OWA when addressing the internal IP of the server through the vpn.
I know these services work via this same pptp connection from another windows box. It's almost like it's not routing traffic down the tunnel. Vodafone don't seem to be blocking it as it is establishing a connection. Anyone any ideas??
This is more than frustrating. PPTP connection establishes fine, RRAS reports back an IP address for the logged on client.
I've tried using vxutil on the device (http://www.cam.com/vxutil_pers.html) - when the tunnel is reported as up, it is unable to pass any traffic through the vpn it seems, no tcp, udp or icmp. Nothing.
I have tried adding the server ip address under exceptions, also *.*, but no difference.
I ran Ethereal/Wireshark on the server, not one packet even reaches the server, this pptp connection is useless and somewhat of a let down.
I guess nobody else uses pptp at all? I would have thought I had a fairly standard setup with a W2k3 box nat'd behind a 3com router/firewall.
PPTP works fine on any other device apart from this..
Just so share my experisnce with VPN. I have configured PPTP using the WM6 VPN client and I am able to establish connection on my Kaiser(stock rom).
The connection works fine in PIE when I use it to access one of my servers via HTTP. In fact, I just need to point PIE to the URL of my server(internal IP. I have to set the IP in the hosts file in the registry) and it will automatically dial into my VPN.
For RDP, I am also able to login to my server but strangely the connection will automatically drop after 3 mins or so. I am also unable to get the RDP client to automatically use VPN. I have to manually establish the VPN connection myself.
You may want to try some other VPN clients and not the WM6 VPN client. I have read some threads in the past in this forum regarding other VPN clients that work on WM6.
Ok, so I have Duttys WM6.1 5.2.19700 on my tilt. now I have the unlimited pda plan on my phone also. I tried connecting to the vpn at my office, but the built in vpn client does not support group authentication, so I am now using Bluefire VPN client. I had it working last week after screwing around with the settings for a day or so. I saw that dutty had a diamond rom out, so I flashed with it and didn't like it so much (dutty does a great job and I'm sure he'll make it perfect at some point), so I flashed back. Now no matter how much I try, I cannot get bluefire vpn to connect to my vpn. it keeps giving me an error about failing to establish a tunnel. I tried having it connect through 'media net' and 'my isp'. I can't remember what the heck I did to have it connect before. I remember reading a thread about what the default at&t media net and isp settings were and I applied those, but they seemed to be the same as what were originally there anyway. I know my vpn settings for the office are correct. I would really appreciate any help. Thanks.
I got rid of my ISP , and now I am using T-Mobile Total Internet (with Internet Sharing) to tether it to my Laptop/Desktop. So far so good, right?
Wrong! I do not complain about the speeds that I am getting; I only complain about the fact that I cannot connect to my office VPN.
It seems that we need a 'real' IP address rather than the local NAT address that our PC is assigned with Internet Sharing. I found out that we could get a real IP address (i.e. if T-mobile actually provides it) by using our Kaiser as an actual USB modem. This was previously possible in WM6 by using a utility called WModem, which does not seem to work with WM6.1.
So, I would be very grateful if anyone has an answer to these,
1. Is it possible to use Kaiser as a USB Modem in WM6.1?
2. Is it possible to make WModem or a similar utility run on WM6.1?
3. Is it possible to obtain a real IP address with Internet sharing?
4. Is it possible to connect to VPN by any other means?
Comments on this issue are appreciated. Btw, I am using L26 V12 ROM, and I love it. I am not ready to part with it to downgrade to WM6, to make all of this work.

hello everybody,
i am having huge problems connecting to my university`s wifi (tu-clausthal in germany). i installed secure w2 newest version and the required certificates from my university. i configured everything according to the guidelines. however, i cannot connect to the wifi network, it keeps connecting forever and nothing happens. i am 100% sure the configuration is correct, a friend of mine can connect with the exact same config. also i can connect to any other wifi network, no matter if wep, wpa, etc. only havin problems with the certificates, it seems.
now my question: has anybody successfully connected to a secure w2 wifi network? if so, which rom and which version of secure w2 did you use?
the technical support of my university doesnt know anything about windows mobile...iphone and symbian phones seem to connect without problems...
any suggestions?
edit: i am using AtheniOS rom wm 6.1
Same problem connecting to a w2 on my AT&T Tilt. My company was running a linksys standard WPA but installed a WPA2 a few months ago. My IT department tried to help but they don't know windows mobile and AT&T tech support was useless. I have a WPA2 option in my wireless menu but I can't connect??? I'll get looking and will post if I find anythink.
hmm too bad. as i said, one of my friends can connect without problems....
With WPA2 Enterprise (not WPA2-PSK) Windows Mobile allows only EAP-TLS & PEAP Authentication, the authentication type will be configured on a central RADIUS server(s). With EAP-TLS you MUST have a personal certificate on the device as well as the Root CA's certificate. The client certificate must also have the 'Client Authentication' attribute. The Root CA certificate will generally have the 'All Purposes' attribute. With PEAP you have the option to use either a Certificate or Username/Password to identifiy the user - you would normally use Username/Password, however the RADIUS Server always identifies itself to the client using a Certificate. The client has the option to ignore this certificate if it chooses, however the default is to verify it is a trusted certificate. In XP or Vista you can turn this checking off in the network settings by unchecking the box 'Validate server certificate'. In Windows Mobile there isn't a way of doing this in the GUI, however there is a registry tweak that can be set:
Code:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\EAP\Extensions\25
ValidateServerCert=0
Setting the value to 1 means check the certificate, 0 means don't check it.
Also verify the Time & Date on your device is in sync with the RADIUS server as timing is critical with PKI.
Other than that I don't know what to suggest. I sucessfully use my Kaiser with (almost) stock 5.2.19212 ROM on two WPA2 networks, one using WPA2/AES with PEAP authentication and the other using WPA2/AES & EAP-TLS - both work fine.
One more thing, check the version of the 'TNETW1251.dll' file. There appears to be at least two floating around. I have version 3.55.0.0 in my ROM.
HTH

thanks for your advice!
i just flashed the new atheniOS win 6.5 and installed the secure w2 software and now it works! i dont know why or how though
I have a ROM based on the official WWE 5.2.19212 ROM, it is slightly spiced with some updates and some appications I wanted integrated - nothing special.
I have recently had Exchange ActiveSync enabled by my company so I have a permanent GPRS connection to Vodafone (I have set the connection to 'AlwaysOn' in the registry). I have a home VPN setup where I can VPN to my network at home using the Native L2TP/IPSec client. Prior to getting Exchange'd this worked fine. Since I have had Exchange ActiveSync (and the permanent GPRS connection) I have had VPN issues with the client just not working. I doesn't even attempt to make a connection; it flashes up 'Connecting' for a second or so then stops.
If I soft reset the Kaiser, wait for it to boot, settle down(?) and then establish the GPRS connection (3G or HSDPA usually depending on where I am) I can connect the VPN fine. If I leave it for a few hours I then get the same behaviour whereby it doesn't even attempt to connect. Another soft-reset and it's back working again.
Anyone else have these issues? Is it a bug with 5.2.19212, any workarounds?
Andy
