i posted something for help and never got a reply, also i have went back alot of pages and a lot of people who are new and posted for help have received none what so ever. why is that?
chris
It might be the nature of the question or not enough info to allow someone to compose an answer without asking a question in response.
I'm hardly an old-timer around here and have found the site quite helpful and have gotten response to my questions.
its fairly easy to ask for more info tho? but it was just a question i wasnt getting on anyones back or that. i am a total newbie at these phones and need as much help as i can get to use it to its full potential
chris
I'm new here too. Asked a question, got an answer. Look at your question and two things trike me. Its a bit vague and its something I expect you could find out by searching these forums and the rest of the net.
I find that if you help yourself - by finding out as much as you can first, maybe trying a few things and having them fail - then people are far more willing to help you.
General rule of the board No.79231 - "Don't reply to anyone who spells theme incorrectly" ;-)
Seriously, it's probably because you asked a question that has been asked so many times that it is obvious you have not shown any effort by doing a search yourself.
Tip try a search for corporate AND install. I'm not sure if it is exactly the same method as on the Alpine and I'm not going to search for you I'm afraid.
yea i understand that guys, and i have searched and found a load of stuff just do not have a clue what to download theres that many.

See first thing I noticed - everything you asked in this post can be found by just searching the forum. Themes [I assume you do mean themes] can be found by a simple google search. How to install on the XDA[is that a phone?] can be found in the users manual. Upgrading the ROM might be something you wanna come back to once you know your phone a little better. Live with it a little while...

Me, Get ratty? Perish the thought. Me getting ratty would be like me saying something like, oh, I don't know - "Listen you little twit!!! Try the fricken search button!!!" But I didn't say that. I tried to offer you some help. Take it or leave it!!!
haha i like your banter

1. I take it you mean the ROM. You don't wanna delete the OS. You wanna upgrade it. I use the MDA/Wizard so I'm not to sure about the upgrade for the mini but I'm sure someone has cooked one by know. Again. Just search for "Mini s Rom upgrade."
2. Once you find the upgrade, it'll tell you how to install it. Read that post carefully. No since bricken the thing.
3. Search for themes. I use www.pdagold.com and a few others.
4. No Chris, how would I know what would interest you? I mean I good but mind reading isn't something I've mastered just yet - close but still not 100%. PDA gold offers some freeware. Check them out...

People do help newbies, and that's part of the job. I'm getting worried by the number of people saying that we don't help newbies. We were all one once, but for God, I suppose (I guess that's what he was doing for the first 5 days, blinging up his phone!)
Anyway, I don't know anything about the o2 stuff. I've got an o2 phone, but basically reset my phone before it installed anything from the extended rom. This basically means, extended slowness. You can then pick and choose what to install to customise your phone, resulting in a faster phone.
Theme and things: I suggest you have a look through this thread for ideas
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=44560&highlight=start
Many people recommend Wisbar, a customisation program to change the look of the phone. It's heavy, uses a lot of memory, but looks good.
Have a look through this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=57926&highlight=software
There are many similar threads on the board, but my recommendations are, install SmallMenu, gsfinder, (and for me, VJOkButt). Anything else is cosmetic or optional, these 2/3 are essential.
V
1. to remove it try doing a hard reset, then boot up in coproate mode and enter 0506.Failing that to temporarily remove it go to start->settings->remove programs and remove O2ActiveUI. This will only make it go until your next hard reset. If you want to get rid of it another way try removing the file from the startup by: fileexplorer /windows/startup remove the program called o2 startup and do a soft reset.
2.no prgrams needed
3.you need to get wisbar advance forst, then get the xp theme on that and it should work
4. get a program called spb pocket plus, great little app and tcmp movie player too is good after that it's down to personal preference
Try www.freewareppc.com for lots of freeware.
hahaha
1. How to install Windows XP on my Wizard?
2. Where to download 3mpx patch for my camera?
3. And I need FM-radio patch too. May be it in AKU 3.5?
4. How to double screen resolution to 640x480?
5. And finally: how to install ASQ* Filter for this forum?
*ASQ = Another Stupid Question

Sorry about your Feelings Chris.
I felt the same a few days back when I joined this forum.
But People who scorned at me were probably those who had never even heard about the forums I am Moderating on; (these forums have nothing to do with XDA developement however) But I can assure them that had they posted anything "seemingly stupid" on those forums I would have gladly helped them.
Vijay Was extremely helpful in explaining to me the way the world runs and the Way THIS forum Runs (excuse the caps).
He came to my rescue and set things right about it and I am glad that he is here as are some other members who have been very much helpful.
This forum is a Great place for newcomers as well as for experts.
At first if you dont understand things u might feel confused; but later on as you go thru the posts......things become clear.
At least they did for me.
I have read your posts and what you write was, what I felt just 2 weeks back when I joined, Only I took it all in my stride.
Chris maybe you had the guts to speak it out loud..
So in a way you are better that me Chris !!
Please keep on searching for your answers here on xda-dev and I am sure you shall go a long way.
In case there is ever anything I can do to help you out simply whisper...

I have posted a reply to your queries for O2 default software removing and I have posted a few Today skins (XP type)

jeasbe: I hope that you meant that sincerely, because I just read through my posts to you and I always sound like I'm a real idiot! I'm not generally such a d*ck, but I was relatively recently made a moderator, and my view is this:
I love this forum; I refresh all day, I wrote an RSS scraper for it, and post randomly all through the day. I try to keep the board as enjoyable for others as it is for me. I don't like slapping anyone down, because who am I? But sometimes, I think people forget that we're all people with brains and familes and feelings, not just meaningless posts on a forum.
So really, I mean it, if anyone gives anyone a hard time, PM me and I'll see if it's a legitimate complaint. If I can help, I'll probably end up answering a post at some point anyway, because I can't stop
Again jeasbe, apologies for sounding curt with you before, but as you can see from the above thread, people were getting out of hand and that irritated me!

Hello everyone. As you can probably tell I am new to this forum. I recently bought my first PPC (Tilt) and I am thoroughly happy with my device (thus far). Seeing how I am new to this genre of phones. I decided to surf the internet to see what kind of info was available for my new toy. To make a long story short, after I surfing the internet and visiting many different forums. I noticed the XDA or XDA developers being used frequently. So I decided to do a Google search which directed me here. I must admit I am thoroughly impressed by this forum (website) and plan to be a contributing member. I have learned so much about the capabilities of my phone. You guys are really amazing. Which leads me to my problem? I am having a difficult time understanding the verbiage being used to describe the various different upgrade features being discuss on this board. All That being said I have some question I would like to ask. But first I have decided to condense my questions on one thread as to make it easier for other interested parties as well as for me to find. However feel free to direct my question or to add a link that can answer my question at your convenience as I know many (if not all) these question have been answered in other threads (sorry remember I am unfamiliar with all these new words).
1)Is there some sort of getting started manual that I can used to better understand the various different words being used on this forum?
What does flash, cooking, roms, etc mean?
2) I would like to get rid of all the ATT stuff (for a lack of a better word) that on my phone and upload all the high speed HTC stuff.
I would like to do this in hopes of increasing performance as well as to have all the programs and features that where meant for the TYTN 2. If one could list the steps or refer me to the link that could do this it would be greatly appreciated.
3)How does a person find out about the various different applications or program that are available for my phone?
This would be of great interest to me. In particularly when it comes to music and radio stations. What is the best music/media player available? What is the best program to listen to various radio stations? And what site can I use to research this stuff?
4) Lastly I am really interested in all this voip stuff (Skyp, Google talk, etc). It would be pretty cool to use the internet to make phone calls instead of paying for daytime minutes. How would one go about doing this? Am I to understand that I can used my phone exactly the same way but through the internet?
I wanted to take the time to thank those who answered my question (and those that didn’t) as well as to developer of this board.
Thank you
Bulldog1
i think if you spend some time looking through these forums you'll be able to extrapolate many of these answers.
i'm not trying to be a jerk but your questions are kind of extensive and mostly answered with a bit of digging.
sorry.

No manual - you learn from osmosis.
I am pretty new around here as well... but a long time lurker...
So - to help as much as possible - here is a quick answer to your questions:
Flashing is when you overwrite / rewrite the firmware. It is the method used to put different ROMs on your device.
Cooking is where you create a custom ROM image - so it comes customized with whatever the chef puts on it.
ROM - think of it as an operating system image that is transfered from your computer to your device.

This site is chalk full of information about these kinds of things: Kaiser is pretty new - so hit one of the other forums under XDA. Software sitting on top of the OS should be pretty standard... ;-)

Kinda. But not as well. Data connections are more prone to dropping than voice calls.
It is cheaper to call internationally though... ;-)
So if you have a good connection and you aren't moving... it is a great alternative.

yeah, a glossary of terms would be great. as I read more it makes more sense and I find myself searching some of the terms online. be nice to have somewhere with meanings of WWE, SPL etc mean.
Welcome to the board. I would recomend reading all the wiki's that are stuck in each section and also the search button will bring many many threads on all the questions you have asked. Try this one to get you started. http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Kaiser Good luck

I'm in the same boat as you. I read through the posts here and found them really helpful, especially the stickied ones about flashing ROMs.
The best way to get rid of the AT&T stuff is to flash your ROM. Flashing your rom to the HTC-rom will wipe the AT&T bundled software and replace it with the set that comes with the TyTn II (although no TomTom).
I've been trying to find answers to some of your questions too (especially where to find good software and media players), so I'm looking forward to replies from the older members.

WWE: World Wide English
SPL: System Programming Language (my guess?)
Welcome to the forum, i am also new. As to your question of what is the best media player, it is TCMP, it plays almost everything (even .flv files!) but support has been discontinued because the ppl made it a commercial product...mind you very tech savy ppl are still continuing support for it and adding codecs and stuff.
to download it and some codects, go to this website:
http://www.4winmobile.com/forums/ht...cial-hybrid-media-player-all-codecs-here.html
Hope that helped
Thank you. I can understand that some question may too broad to answer in this thread. I understand that alot of my question are answered in other threads and for this I appologies.
The the reason I ask those question is becuase I do not understand the language being used. I have read (reread) the stinky under the kaiser upgrades tabs but still do not understand what exactly it is saying (or what it is supposed to do).
While I agree most of my other questions can be answered in other threads it would be of great help to me if someone could explain in greater detail to me my question number 2 which I have reprinted below.
I would like to get rid of all the ATT stuff (for a lack of a better word) that on my phone and upload all the high speed HTC stuff.

You guys are great, I can see a sprite of sharing and helping in this forum. Again, you guys are the best, especially thanks to Daniel.
I bought a Chinese unlocked version Kaiser in Hong Kong, and I found out that it is not that convenience to me even though I can read Chinese. With Chinese Windows, it runs very slow. I decided to flash the ROM with HTC standard English ROM.
However, because of warranty issue, I need to backup the Chinese OS ROM, and restore it to its original setting if in case I have to take it back to HTC for repairing.
I am totally new to PPC or WM devices (I used to be a Palm lover), I wonder if anyone of you can tell me how to "Backup" and "Restore" the ROM. Detail instructions will be highly appreciated.
Sorry for my stupid questions, but I really don't know how. Whether I get the instructions or not, YOU GUYS ARE THE BEST!!!!!!!!!
If you were previously using the HTC or AT&T rom then i highly suggest you upgrade to Dutty's rom.
1. its faster.
2. way better battery life.
3. tabbed task manager at the top
4. more free rom and ram.
5. better design.
6. more i cant think of, try it! its great!
does it still have the colored touch flo icons?

o but he does, his "lite" roms, i dont like them, i installed one on accident and there was basicly nothing on it. its extremely basic, i ment to install his touchFlo rom, so im downloading it now.
i dont think .NET 3.5 is already on, but its avaible right there on the topic.
I prefer Lite Roms because I can control better what to install, update and remove. I'm using his lite rom no. 6 and its awesome.

i thought that too, but this rom was soo "lite" that there was nothing unique about it. i mean it was really no different than installing a lite HTC rom.
How does one upgrade the ROM? Is it just a transfer like a cab and then installation in the device, or is it more complicated? Some instructions on how to do that would be very useful. Can you point out where to find them? If it all fails and one needs to go back, would a Sprite restore bring back the previous ROM? Are there any incompatibilities with pre-installed programs? The ftp site lists three different Hybrid TouchFlo programs. How do they differ? Which one is the best recommended?

Well actually there's virtually no apps installed, not even the HTC ones. That means that I can install the ones I want. When there's an update, I feel that I can "properly" remove the old ones and install the new ones. They also come with some tweaks already included, and .NET 3.5.
So it feels like a "base pumped" ROM which I can fully customize.
Please give us some instructions on how you install a new ROM.

yes i agree. its just that when i was saying his rom is unique, i think there's some pretty cool things on there, but im not sure what they are. like, i wouldnt know what to search for or what cab to install. so installing the lite rom i wouldnt even get those cool things.
however, if you want this rom not for the cool things he has, but for a blank rom, then the lite rom is the rom to get.

If you are a very experienced user you may want a Lite ROM.
However, I found the fully loaded ROM has many advantages.
1. You may have some very useful softwares that you may not even aware they exist. So you will never look for those to put into the Lite ROM in the first place.
2. You will learn to use more applications and figure out good and bad ones first hand.
3. In the Lite version, you'll always find that the software that you need for the moment hasn't gotten installed even you have it in your download library. You'll miss the time and being agonized. As time goes time, you've accumulated all the right softwares in your custom machine, it is time to replace the machine with a new one. The current one just have never reach it full potential.
Kaiser has plenty memory space, a few extra softwares are not to kill it not like TOUCH which really just got a pretty face and no guts.
I recommend fully loaded ROM for casual users. Extra softwares do not increase weight of the machine provided the extra softwares do not cause stability issue. Stability usually caused by bad software. One lousy one can do it.
For example, I won't mind if I can get a 32G SD card and people loaded all the games and MP3 and Video for me.

Yeah, that's exactly why I haven't tried to reflash my tilt - The "directions" in that post are so unclear and incomplete...
Someone who can write needs to create a step by step guide - no unexplained acronyms, a complete list of everything that is needed, and maybe a little explanation about why you have to do some of the steps.
I would happily write a post with this info, except that the directions for flashing are so bad that I can't understand how to do it.
Answer some basic questions, like, "can you flash an OS with no Radio - can you flash a radio with no OS?"
When you refer to downloading a ROM - Does that mean to the PC or to the device? OK, I've entered bootloader mode - now what? What's the next step? When I DL the ROM to the device, where should it be stored? What makes up a ROM? Is it one file or a bunch of files?
These are just some of the basic details that should be in a set of directions for flashing.
The HardSPL directions that are built into the install are pretty good - they step the user through every little detail. We need that for "flashing", because based on the information on this forum, it's not inherently obvious how to do it.
Regards,
Jeff

Jeff

First of all, please stop being so demanding when you are in the situation of asking for help. Nobody here has obligation to teach you what you need to do to YOUR phone. They don't get paid to do that. I would suggest you to head to tytn/Hermes' wiki page to learn more before you try on your phone http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Hermes
Tilt or tytn II are still fairly new device on the market. Since tytn and tytn II are similar in many ways, you can use hermes/tytn's wiki for reference. Many of us, myself included, learn the process of flashing, upgrading, downgrading, and modifying through countless experiments or through other members here. I'd say - flash your phone with hardSPL first, then you are safe to do the rest if you can follow the directions. Once again, I am not trying to discourage you to ask for help, but please do respect others and their works. They have contributed a lot of time to make this forum the best and make our phones even better.

I do not want to go offtopic, but you are waaaay out of line.
Ive been using online forums for 12 years now and have gotten to where I am because of nice, hardworking and helpful individuals.
Its Karma, in the end if you (people) help trick420 and I learn to flash our roms, they will benefit one day when they visit photography forums or want to travel to Northern Italy because I have posted very thorough articles and guides to Digital SLR Cameras and Lenses and travelling to places ive been.
His suggestions will in fact make this site better because it will allow others like him and me to learn and then eventually contribute to the forum. I personally am not a professional at WinMobile and have done my homework (read the wiki, googled terms, acronyms, procedures and so on) but have not really grasped the idea of flashing roms.
trick420 was not being demanding, you need to cool down.

Point taken, but my post was a comment, not a request for help, and was not demanding, just an observation. I'm just stating what, in my opinion, is wrong with the instructions posted so far. They lack so much information that a noob simply cannot figure out what to do at times.
A noob is just that - a noobie... How can you expect them to know that a Tytn is similar enough to a Tytn II that the same things apply? How would they know that?
The thread that Dutty refers everyone to that is a "noob" is now 11 pages long. The worst part of it is, the instructions on the first few posts don't even apply to Dutty's ROMs now because he's building them as an executable file (Great idea by the way), which makes me think he's simplified it to the point that you don't need to read the "flashing" ROM.
My point is this - if I'm a noob and I want to learn how to flash, I have to dig through 11 pages of a stickied post that is a year old just to figure out one step of the process. It takes way too much work to figure it all out, and then you'd better make sure that you don't forget something along the way.
Flashing a ROM should be a process to be learned by a noob, not a journey of discovery like it is now.
The wiki or sticky for flashing should be redone for clarity. For me, the flashing process is like a combination of a heavily fragmented hard drive and trying to find a windows registry key without the use of a search function.
Again, I'm not complaining just for the sake of complaining. If someone wants to send me a detailed process for flashing via PM or email for the Kaiser, I'll write it into a document that the average semi-technical noob can use. But until I figure all of this out I can't help. I'm a hardware and software engineer by trade, and I know as well as anyone that the one thing a programmer hates to do is to have to document a project or write a spec. I'm offering to do that if you programmers will support my questions and help me craft a good, readable document for the masses.
Regards,
Jeff

Me too, ill help write out the guide on a beginner to intermediate level.
I'm getting a tilt this saturday(christmas money) but i have some questions.
1. Is a Kaiser worth the extra money in stead of a tilt? I tried a few comparisons, all i noticed was a little less usable memory and a front camera.
2. I've read about ROM but i don't really get it. i think it is like your operating system on a PC. if i want to take off the at&t rom and have the HTC rom is that an upgrade ?
3. What is flashing? is that like reformating a pc?
Will Someone Help Me Please?
With a new rom you can add more features, sure this can be done by installing applications. But if you see the rom of dutty, its tweaked they make the phone faster, that is all wat we want.
Yeah you can say that the rom is the same as your operating system on your pc.
I have no experience with the AT&T so i can't help you on that point.
^^THANKS^^
If you haven't read the Wiki yet, you will find a lot of info there. This community can be very helpful, but as a point of ettitquite, people are generally more apt to help if you have done some homework first including reading through the Wiki and Searching (use google search here).

In case you missed it, it is right at the top of the fourm thread list.

Also check out the upgrading section of the Kaiser folder. There are now a whole slew of ROMs and choosing the right one is really a matter of taste. In this respect, it help a lot to first discover all the little things tat annoy you about the ROM you have and there's a good chance it annoyed some else too and they changed it in the form of a ROM customization.
Hello all. I am a newbie, exciting as that sounds! Anyways, this is my out cry, possibly to some of the major contributors (if possible), maybe even some of the ROM developers out their. My goal is simple...making your life easier, and less stressful with us newbies.
Anyways, here is what I would like to contribute to the forum. I would like to write up a Wiki of free software, and how to install and so forth for XDA-Developers. I would gladly take control of this, link to the downloads and so forth, but would like some help from the seniors here, since I don't really know a ton about this stuff. However, from what I see here (daily for about 4 months) is that generally, the major issues are finding software and what it actually does, and I think this could help a ton! Let me know through PM or this thread if you are interested in helping me out, as well as helping a lot of people out, I would think. I do know the current Wiki does provide a tools review section, but I think a general link location, title, version, release date and brief description page would be helpful.
Much of that work has already been done in the existing Kaiser Wiki. I'm sure that if you wanted to maintain a matrix of software, installation instructions, version numbers, etc. and keep it updated, the powers that be would consider it a worthwhile addition. As for links to the software, many (most?) are already on the Wiki.
i think its a good idea but most of which are already on either the wiki's or stickies...as well as other threads in other sections...much of this wont be needed of people just searched and dig a bit deeper than one page of reading...a lot of answers are out there just need to search harder or refine the search
I do live a lot by the wiki, I just find it to be a bit clumsy, since it is VERY overwhelming, especially from a new person stand point. I was thinking of a simple page, that listed the following, work in progress, let me know what others think first.

Would it be big? Probably, but I think it could be very helpful as well.
here's a good place to start:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Must_have_tools
this is linked from the hermes wiki, but most of the software will work on the kaiser too. try looking at the wikis of other devices, and also looking in the software subforum, you will get a good idea of wat ppl use on their kaisers
thanks that is very helpful. This is pretty much what I am looking to start/add to. Let me start working on some stuff and prototype it, also, if I could get some information from some developers, if you do work, and see this post, post me to your stuff, directly with some brief descriptions of it, so I can start looking at it. Thanks all!
this is what I was thinking
Name: HTC Action Screen & HTC Action Screen From Storage Disk
Description: This is a quick access to tasks. Generally placed in the bottom task bar, lets you gain access to things like: New SMS, New Email, New Appointment etc. See Screen Shot.
Language: English
Download Link: Action Screen, Action Screen From SD
Thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=340803
Latest Version: Unknown
Release Date: Unknown
Developer: HTC
Donation Link: N/A
Known Issues/Fixes: How To Fix Wrong Email, MMS & Contact Shortcut
And so on, kind of an easy format to update and fix up
Don't forget to add classifications. I'd even go so far as to think of this as a searchable database or at least a spreadsheet that can managed as a filtered list. You're looking at dozens of apps to keep track of. From an admin standpoint you'll want to track the last date YOU updated the info as well.
I've done similar projects for companies....it's a pain to manage in a text file.
I like the spreadsheet idea, I think I already have to many other websites being worked on to add another DB to the picture I was also thinking about wiki'ing it as well, which probably would not look pretty in a spreadsheet, but who knows.
Its an excellent idea. I agree with you that it is already available but not in the format you plan on doing.
+1 for the idea; ideal for newcomers and/or folks who have been out of touch for a time.
As for those whe are saying that all this is already available in one form or another: very true, but when you have to dig through hundreds upon hundreds of threads then other hundreds of pages within the thread... Yes, searching, but you have to know what to search for. A vague idea of desired functionality helps, but what if you don't even know of something that could potentially be a life-line for you?
you should probley put in screen shots too. Ya know to make it easier on everyone.
This is an awesome idea. What i really hate is when someone posts a thread full of cabs but with no explanatation as to what they actually do. The worst i find is with all the HTC apps. page after page of "HTC camera", "HTC album", "HTC action screen", it isn't exactly easy to tell from the name what a lot of them do.
ok well we will see you when you're done and I'm sure that will be a couple of years.

I definetly think screen shots would be nice. Sometimes form is just as necessary as function and I'd like to see what I'm going to be working with / not working with.
spring cleaning
I say this site needs some spring cleaning since there's no many versions of this and that to the point it takes lots of time digging and finding whats best for everyone

This already exists. It's been linked in the wiki for ages. In the 'Downloads' section, there are links to external freeware pocketpc sites, which include descriptions and multiple screenshots per application.
Y'all just need to browse the wiki more often and when you find something, link it to the wiki, so it *CAN* be easily found in the future for others.
Hope this helps!
