size of diamond? - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

from the official specs:
102 mm (L) X 51 mm (W) X 11.35 mm (T)
which seems impossible.
only 10 cm high, 5 cm,s wide?
could someone confirm this? it would help in finding carkit holders and cases

It's like holding a Blackberry Pearl

Yes, these are the real dimensions

Why does this seem "impossible"?

When I got my Diamond yesterday, I was impressed how small this unit is, especially copared to my big fat Hermes. I really like those slim dimensions of my new gadget

i would guess from the pictures that it would be a lot bigger.
i have the qtek 8300 (tornado) which is
Lengte : 107,5 mm
Breedte : 46,2 mm
Diepte : 17,5 mm
so the diamond is not only about the same size it is also a lot thinner.

It really is as small as they say. Smaller than an iPhone. MUCH Smaller. I LOVE IT!!

Yep, the size is one of the big attractors imho - it's smaller than 90% of the phones out there.. nokia/lg/sony ericsson, etc included - and yet it has so much functionality!

another unbeatable feature

i have a friendly argument with an iphone lover. he asked me what the diamond can do that the iphone (with 3G and gps) can't do. i said to him: this! and let my diamond slip in my t-shirt pocket....he got the message.
shortly, we have the first pda that fits in our breast pocket. same thing like the first motorola V3.......

You also could have tapped on the touchscreen with a fingernail (if you happen to have long fingernails), or opened any one of hundreds of applications available for WM devices NOT available on iPhones...

Kaiser replacement

http://www.infosyncworld.com/news/n/8476.html
Same spec with Kaiser, but with VGA 640x480 , 262K colors , FLASH, XGA Video out.
That's enough for my next Kaiser replacement.
If it's indeed ever to be released !
More complete spec:
http://www.gsmarena.com/i_mate_ultimate_9502-2158.php
Looks OK, but for a device that's the same size or larger than the Universal, I'd want a screen you can close, to protect it when it's in a pocket.
That's practically UMPC size, by the look of it.
With a 2.8" screen? Sounds pretty close to the size of the Kaiser.
Bet 640x480 looks real sharp on that size screen.
I dont think this is that big, according to the article the dimension is:
116 x 60 x 17.8
While Kaiser:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTC_TyTN_II#Specification
112mm (L) x 59mm (W) x 19mm (T)
HTC Universal:
127 mm (L) x 81 mm (w) x 25 mm (T)
So, it is still SMALL device !
specs look identical to Kaiser to me, other than VGA screen
nothing earth-shattering there, imho
dld
As far as i know, WM6 doesn't support 256k colors...
wow... looks good.
any idea when it will be released?
Have any of these devices gone thru FCC approval yet? Don't think they have.
Nice device but no FM radio !
If the stats are the same, such as the processor, and it is higher res, wouldn't it just be like a kaiser, but slower?
Im not sure what the advantage would be of more pixels in the same amount of space would be. 2.8 screen is pretty small, 640x480 on that is going to be ultra fine.
Maybe this is a case of "Less is More", but I will hold my judgment till I can see it in action.
Wow, it looks darn good to me. VGA screens really do look sharp and ultra crisp. I would really want to know if it's a trans-reflective screen, that would push me towards it more.
Kaiser 112x59x19 190g
i-Mate 116x60x18 200g
Size wise, pretty close.
I was getting a little bit of envy until I read this.
...so you would have to be nuts to pay over $800 (xx50 anticipated price) to an overseas company or US importer, for a phone which comes from a company with tech support and return policies which are reported to be horrible, and questionalble quality products.
...I will NEVER buy another IMate product.
They are the worst company I have ever dealt with.
But don't take my word for it- Do a search in the PPC forum. They have horrid, incompetent support.
The only rom upgrades they ever put out, were basically stolen from the work other vendors had done (there were other vendors tags in the rom)
You have been warned.

I handled two months back
Flying from Singapore to London, sat next to an engineer for the company. All I can say is the demo i held was a high quality steel make, no plastic etc, and the keyboard was sleek but smallish. Form factor similar to Kaizer but heavier.
The design / engineering are in the UK and he had two phones on him, this and another standard phone (no keyboard)
M
I'd wonder what kind of battery hit that VGA screen would have as well.
It has the same CPU with Kaiser.

i think real keyboard is meaningless. Diamond without a real keyboard is better, when you hold it on your hand, you will feel it looks more like a real phone. not holding a huge monster on your hand.
the new virtual full QWERTY keyboard will change your mind. find any friends can hand you to try the real HTC diamond.
FFS why do people moan on about the keyboard adding thickness. It's 6.7mm extra, that's like an ipod nano.
So if you already have a thinner device, please say, but if not, then don't moan.
Ok I did some research on all HTC's Pocket PC Phones and came up with thse devices whch are thinner
Artemis 16.8mm
Niki 15.8mm
Polaris 15.5mm
Elf 13.9mm
Advantage 16mm
So this shows us that the Touch Pro is the thinnest device that HTC has produced with a proper keyboard

I had a tytn and a touch cruise...cruise is more handling because was more slim but keyboard on tytn was very useful...
Some specs stop me in my decision:
htc diamond: positive ---> it is present a 4gb hd
negative--->no flash camera e no expansion slot
htc touch pro: positive ---> flash camera more ram than in diamond expansion slot
negative----->qwerty keyboard is more useful but the device it is no so handling as diamond

We have every right to moan about the keyboard. Some of us just don't need it, and it increases the thickness by around 50% (and decreases the style by 90%).
In automotive terms, it's a bit like buying a car with a steering wheel and a rudder. confused
Anyway, the fact that it has a flash is good, and the keyboard does seem to be one of the best that HTC have produced. I might get one as a backup device...
Decreases style by 90%?
And how do you measure style?
Considering some of the things you've called stylish, I shall disregard this comment

I'm obviously just pointing out that it looses a lot of its style through its thickness.

16MB are great... that' 4 mp3s
But 16MB mircorSD cards are so expensive... I guess because they are handcrafted
Up to 16 GB microSD
It's a nicely spec'd phone but a bit too thick for my liking - I had a TyTn at one stage and couldn't handle the thickness.
I've just ordered a Touch Diamond so let's see how that goes!
16MB!! what to do with all that space ?!?!?!?
I can't wait to get my hands on this baby (only about 10 weeks to go apparently). I have a Nokia N95 at the moment which is a good size and the touchpro is 3 mm thinner.
I've used TyTN II, iPAQ and Treo. I feel Treo's keyboard is the best, then iPAQ, then TyTN II. Touch Pro has similar keyboard as TyTN II. The keyboard is just not the keyboard I like, honestly, I almost start hating it. (that's why I sold TyTN II and bought Diamond.).
If Touch Pro's keyboard has no significant improvement, and the time needed for screen rotation is not improved, I won't consider it, especially I'm using a Diamond now.
Keyboard is a lot better
I have handled the Pro and can say that the keyoard is a lot better.
Like you I don't much like the TYTNII style keyboard as I find it too small and spongy.
The new keyboard is larger and takes up much more of the available space. It is also much nicer to the touch.
I already have a Diamond and prefer to use my thumb or a stylus. I am only put off the Pro as I don't actually use a slide out keyboard and don't like the additional thickness.
All the best,
Sam.
@Sam: Thanks for the info about the keyboard...
I am really lookink forward to it and I hope that it is really available from August.
For me, the thinkness is less than my current phone and since I have rather larger hands I actually think that this is better since it fits better into the palm of my hand...
Let's wait and see when HTC makes it available...
I'm betting it'll be around the end of August running into September when this thing becomes widely available.

Nice phone
yea i like the phone too but i don't think ill be able to deal with the size. looks like the keyboard makes the phone too bulky.. im surprised htc cannot back the keyboard a little thinner. other than that i think this phone is worth waiting for... can't wait for it to come out.

What I will be eventually doing is switching over regardless of contracts. I will going to Florida in the summer and picking one up there. When I return, I will just simply selling my old Diamond. This will all happen by August of this year. I never wait for contracts to expire. That would make me go crazy having a phone for 2 or 3 years straight. This is my 4th phone in the last 6 months....lol
Phones I had in the last 6mths:
1) HP 6955
2) Cruise
3) Trinity
4) Diamond
i think i will be getting the touch pro 2 instead of the diamond 2
Touch Pro 2 here too... played with the Diamond 2 at MWC, I don't like it's look and feel.
Touch Pro 2 is the poison I choose this time.
Will keep my Beloved Diamond 1 for when I need Sleeeknesssss.
Greetz to all.
lucky you... wish i had the chance to visit the mwc
i dont like the look of the diamond 2 it feel cheap
and the pro 2 is very biig its even bigger than TyTN II its better if they name it TyTN III
i will wait for a new phone from htc (diamond 3)
Don't like the Diamond 2
Diamond 2 doesn't look as nice as my original diamond. Touch Pro 2 looks better than the diamond 2, but I'm not liking it either. I might just totally skip on the latest HTC phones and try out the Palm Pre 'till HTC comes up with something else.
Didn't HTC hire a designer or something for their new devices??
I think the oncoming HTC devices are ugly... I really liked the touch phones, they were the first phones that just looked good (except the cruise) and especially the diamand/pro
I wish i never got that touch dual i have now im stuck with it until december;(
But i guess it'll be the iphone for then, I already have a decent winmo phone

Chainfire, can you elaborate a little on what you didn't like about the Diamond 2's look and feel? Is it bricky, cheap, squarish? I have a D1 and am considering the 'upgrade'. Thanks.
well, as i compared the dimensions of the new diamond2 to the old it seems it got a bit larger. it now has the size of the iphone, which in my opinion is too large.
i really like the size of the diamond1, it is a phone-size all-in wonder, and not a tablet-pc with a phone function.
the only real advantage i see is the bigger screen for better working but this is also the reason for the bigger dimensions...
the rest of the new features?
better camera? well get a digicam if you want good pictures, 5mp but no flashlight, forget good pics at evening or at indoor places with bad light...
the other updates: memory,sd slot and better battery, well nice but its no world-wonder...
and the diamond pro 2? brick with phone function? come on...
i will stay with my diamond1 and keep waiting.
so my opionion is: size DOES matter
everyone have a nice day!
i like the no2 think i mgit go there if three get there act together and get a stylish phone made by HTC rather than the current junk
but like most ive got 12 months left on the contract so lets hope the 3 is out and ready and stable by then

Well, please start by opening this link in a new window:
http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=1750&view=1
You can immediately see it is not as small or as cute as the original Diamond ( <3 !! )
It feels a bit 'stretched' in your hand when you are playing with it, don't have a better word to say it.
But the absolute worst part is the 'bottom of the front' as you can see in the picture. They gray/silvery part looks incredibly cheap/ugly IRL, and its just a waste of space with no function (they should have just made the thing a centimeter shorter).
Furthermore, between the small buttons above the silvery part and the touchscreen soft-buttons is a so called zoom-slider. It's hard to see in the picture on that page, but again this is a waste of space - and it looks really awkward too. While I imagine it could be handy while web-browsing (if it actually works, it didn't do anything on the demo models I played with), at least for me that isn't that important and I would have much preferred an on-screen zoom slider in the browser instead. Again, they could have made the thing another centimeter shorter.
It's just one hell of a butt-ugly phone (well ok it isn't as ugly as say, the G1, but it's nowhere near as sleek as the original Diamond and Touch Pro) and wastes space all over the place. It doesn't feel 'right' in your hand either.
Hope that explains it a bit.
Note that I just noticed the Rhodium has this frecking zoom slider as well... bah!
the only characteristic worth mentioning in case you make the transition is the card slot... But really! Features like the enlarged screen (800x480), a wee better camera and a flashy new metallic design won't make me change my diamond... I mean, they aren't features which make a big diff... let alone define a TRUE SEQUEL.
+ they ditched the D-pad and replaced it with a silly horizontal zoom panel... Why!?!?! it pretty much looks like a DOWNGRADE to me.
No thx!
Not me, that's for sure!
I like my Diamond, despite its poor speed and short battery life... but I'm hoping that something else good comes out in the 9 months or so that are left on my 18 month contract!
My preference would be another WinMo phone but faster, better battery, TV out and possibly even proper headphone jack. Doesn't have to be HTC because HTC software is so poor.

I only played with the Diamond2 a little bit today and yesterday but the one thing I noticed is that performance did seem to be noticeably improved. As I whipped around TF3D it seemed quite a bit snappier than my Diamond. Some of the hardware changes do make you wonder but the TF3D software seems significantly better (that being said - I did get WM to freeze rather easily when playing with the onscreen keyboard - oops!) I didn't think the phone was butt ugly but, in all fairness, I was drooling a little.
Just like most people, the HTC people said that the Pro2 seems to be the one exciting people more but while the features are cool it is kind of a brick IMHO. Of course, I also looked at the P6500 and that made the Pro2 look not *quite* so big!
certainly not me, the device as it is is pretty close to perfect in terms of size/weight.
with the diamond2 getting bigger and heavier, it's a big turnoff to me.
i had a choice of buying a north american diamond but did not as it's thicker and heavier.

Thanks for the insight. I'm really on the fence about 'upgrading'. I'm intrigued by the widescreen for maps/pictures/videos and the 5MP camera has also sparked my attention. The cam on the current Diamond is very good IMO and so I'm just figuring it will get even better on the D2. I use my phone a lot for pictures. I have the NAM version of the D1 so the D2 will actually be the same weight and a little thinner. But I do know what you mean about it being 'stretched'. I had an Imate 8502 and it was a narrow phone that was long. It felt very stretched in hand so that's going to be a factor for me. Loosing the dpad (even if the D1's is crappy) is another big downer.
I've actually been toying with buying a Samsung Omnia instead. $200 cheaper, same camera specs but with a flash, widescreen (although not VGA) and a mouse pointer to 'replace' the dpad. Who knows...
My provider gave me a Samsung Omnia for free and after using a widescreen device (yes, I know, WQVGA, not WVGA), the screen on the Diamond seems too small to use. I will personally be going with the Touch Pro2, not the Diamond2. This is mainly because of the bigger screen size as well as the keyboard, not to mention the decent speaker on it and flashlight.

why is the g2x different size than the o2x?

http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=3598&idPhone2=3888
G2X: 124.5 x 63.5 x 10.2 mm 141.8 g
O2X: 123.9 x 63.2 x 10.9 mm 139 g
Is it because of the different radios?
It could either be a typo/mix up, or just minor differences due to 4G ect.
There were about 5 different versions of sizes in Germany before the O2X came out.. so don't worry about it. I doubt they will use different cases.
T-mobile also lists the specs with a different size.
http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/Phones/cell-phone-detail.aspx?cell-phone=T-Mobile-G2x-with-Google
most probably same sizes. also, G2x is no "true" 4G and to my knowledge even the baseband chip (infineon) will be the same.
I bet it's the same case so the size will be the same.
I suspect it's a conversion error from inches and ounces to mm and grams.
Why these countries are still stuck in the dark ages using such stupid measurements is beyond me. 1866 was like, a long time ago (this is when the US legalised the use of metric in the 'States with the Kasson Act! source).
I hate to disagree with the assumption that they are the same.
The same happened for the HTC HD2 Euro and US version. Only a millimeter in difference but that's a lot when it comes to a perfect fit for the case.
I would wait a little more. For now I will go ahead and get that ugly case from T-mo until a better case comes out.
hm
So what is their original Size ? I would like to buy one but I dont like big phones like HD2 wich isn't very comfortable for me to hold in hand. It's isn't so much about the height of the phone just the shape. I like more round on the edges like Desire S or IS .
But I wouldn't go for a phone wide 67mm. But here are the specs a little bit different http://www.mobilmania.cz/katalog-mobilu/lg-optimus-2x/sc-63-c-1-ci-20531/default.aspx
So what is the real size of this phone can anybody tell me who owns it ?
