I have the cube rom of dutty's and I have had to go to the radio in l26 v7 rom. 1.58.25.17 to get my 3g working properly.
The thing is I am not sure what speed I am connecting at. Whereas with the stock Tmob Rom and L26s rom I get the H for HSDPA turning up where the 3G is at the moment.
How do I get my icon back/know what speed I am connecting at?
I have searched before anyone starts
The 'reg entry' to enable the icon doesnt work and nor does 'htweakc'.
I don't think its down to the radio as i am running the same radio as L26 V7.
Thanks in advance for any help and thanks to all the chefs and tweakers.
Go into settings>connections>hspda and check 'Turn on HSPDA'
I have the same thing, it dosnt seem to be a big deal, my speed conection actually is much better now with this diamond rom, and i notice that is something like +-10 to kbs more fast.

I'm in an area that supposedly has 3G coverage (Portland, Oregon). But...
My Tilt has never connected to the 3G network. I've gone to many areas thoughout the metro area, power cycled my phone (to see if it picked up new towers) but I never get 3G connectivity. The "3G" Icon has never displayed on my Tilt.
I've tried different radios which doesn't make a difference.
Suggestions anyone?
Wow, a local!
I have HSDPA almost everywhere in Portland (fastest 3G standard). Even with it not enabled, I have 3G in most of the metro area, including Vancouver where I live.
What icon is displayed?
I'm actually in Hillsboro, but it may as well be Portland.
Usually the "E" icon, and rarely I get the "H" icon.
I'm not sure what the "H" represents. I think its HSDPA, but I assume thats not 3G or as fast as 3G... and if it is then what's the "3G" icon all about?
HSDPA is what you want to see! It's the fastest version of 3G, and the newest available.
E is Edge, its 2G, not as fast but not horrible... Until Edge Evo comes out.
The data coverage maps from ATT are usually pretty bad. It doesnt have to say 3G for it to be 3G. HSDPA is 3G (the best) as well as other variants.
Do you notice a hit in your download speeds?
hmmmm... how confusing. If HSPDA is 3G. What's the point of the "3G" icon?
At my apartment I only get 1 maybe 2 bars of service if I am lucky so that means that while I am home "E" is the best I can get (or expect). But...
When I am out and about I get the "H" icon occasionally. Is there a good way to test my connection speed?
Yeah it's sort of weird... Here's a breakdown.

I don't particularly like Wikipedia, but this should help. I'm sure there is a program that will test your connection speed, but you can try something simple like connecting and downloading a cab, lets say Google Maps. Then you can run Google Maps and see how fast you get your satellite image up. There is probably a better way but that should show any big differences.
EDIT: I should add that 3G usually denotes a mix or standards available. It's just a generalization, and the fastest will be chosen by your phone (this is how I understand it)
Also, what ROM and radio are you using?
well in the midwest AT&T was having problems with 3G they dont know why but all of a sudden their networks just failed idk if that is what is causing ur problem but i kept on getting an error saying that the phone couldnt connect to wap.cingular.
Thanks for that breakdown. Gives me a much better perspective.
I've tried a couple of the more popular ROMs. But recently I've been using Q-Mobile 1.2 - It's treated me well. I'm still trying to understand why Dutty's roms are so popular. I can't figure out what makes people flock to his ROM's over the others.
I've also tried out some different radio's. None of them seem to make any improvement (while at my apartment) but currently I am using 1.27.15.32 because I am under the impression that it is the newest radio and therefore should somehow be better.
I'm also unsure if I have the correct data connection settings setup after flashing a ROM. From what I am able to find the only thing I need to do is use "wap.cingular" Then I go into advanced settings and input the OpenDNS servers in for the DNS. Do I need to add any other AT&T specific information after flashing. I've read that there is some sort of proxy information needed as well but its not very clear.
Anywho, what settings for data do you use? What Radio, ROM?

Yeah, I read about that. Aparently AT&T has no clue what happened. And to make matters worse there is more data outages today.
But I'm convinced that my issue is unrelated to all that since I've been experiencing these issues way before the data outages.
I'm glad that helped. I use the Stock HTC ROM 1.56.405.5 with Radio 1.27.12.11 (It's packaged with the radio). It's a legit HTC release, which means very little bugs and it's fast. Flash and hard-reset and you are good to go.

Anyways, I've heard good things about the Q-Mobile roms, but I've been so happy with the .11 radio that the HTC stock works great for me. The .11 radio is also packaged in the stock ATT ROM your device shipped with.
When you first boot, it will prompt you to setup data, and for me it gets all the settings automatially and takes about 5 seconds to do it. Otherwise, I'm pretty sure you just use the wap.cingular, but in all honestly I've never had to do it. I also am not sure why people go crazy over Dutty ROMS. It's almost blastphemy to say that on this forum, and I really appreciate his hard work but they arnt for me either. I like real fast, not too flashy and super usable (and stable, of course, why I love HTC stock ROM's)
I just looked now, my access point name is isp.cingular. Never bothered with it before.
I'll check up on this thread tomorrow, hope this helps you out!
Please ignore this.
Interesting... You make a good argument about the stock HTC ROM. I'll have to try that and see if reception and data speeds are any better.
Although my Tilt came with radio 1.27.12.17 - I've only had it for a couple of weeks so they may have put a newer radio on it.
As far as ROM's go, I'm just looking for something that I can use as a baseline. I don't like programs cooked in. I'd rather have a clean ROM and install what I want. But, on the other hand I do like how the cooked roms often contain the latest updates baked right in.
I'm off to flash to the HTC Stock ROM. I'll let you know how that goes.
Thanks for your help, it's nice to have a local to bounce things off of
I don't care for everything cooked in either. The HTC Stock is pretty bare-bones. The only thing I would recommend adding is Nadavi's upadted camera, dumped from Polaris...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=355587
And of course the Tilt Keyboard Fix...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=334911
Also, Youtube and streaming video work out of the box, you don't have to do anything fancy to get GPS working (run GPStest, etc...) and besides that there is not much needed. Any eye candy can be easily added.
BUT, remember to hard-reset after flash! It makes a big difference, at least for me.
Let me know how it goes!

H is faster than standard UMTS, and yes, its HSDPA. You will only see the H while data is being actually sent/received though. When no data is being transferred you will see 3G.

I am looking for some info as to why my phone (ATT Tilt) will state in the HTC Home Screen plugin that I am on "AT&T 3G" While others will just say "AT&T" Depending on the cooked rom I am using. I have also noticed that I will not get a 3G Icon across the top ever if I only see "AT&T" listed on the home screen. I have used Various Roms from here Including Dutty's & Laurentius26's which have both seemed to "support" 3G fully on my phone.
I have tried some of the newer Roms including The newest build of 6.1 from ATT and the latest from Laurentius26 - which is what I am currently using (and an excelent Rom btw) both have only stated "AT&T" in the Home screen & have never shown the 3G marking next to that or a 3G icon at the top of the screen. I instead see a H icon for HSDPA. Now from my understanding HSDPA is Faster than 3G but wouldnt there be areas that are not HSDPA the same way some areas are not 3G so that I would sometimes see the 3G marking, but never have with these few roms. Am I missing something or just thinking too hard about it?
I live in Connecticut USA and we just got 3G coverage for most of the state a couple months back so it just seems weird that on some roms it does not display that it is in a 3G area. Or is HSDPA the same or better?
I also wanted to say thankyou to everyone that posts on the site as they seem so helpful. To help give back to this community I have been trying to keep the Kaiser Cooked Rom Wiki page updated as more excelent roms are put up for display here.
Hey there everyone. I connect the phone to the pc or laptop so I can use the internet. and it looks like the 3G or HSDPA dosent seem fast as Sprint. i connected my brothers phone which is the HTC Touch and I see that the speed is type faster. I put something to download on ATT and the highest I seen so far is 80 to 89 kbps and on sprint is like around 125kbps. and im using HSDPA too. so I was wondering why is acting this way? i have full signal and latest rom and radio too.
Internet sharing works fine on AT&T in California with HSDPA - I get between 350 and 850kbps downstream, 100 - 200kbps upstream on most WM6.1 ROMS. You do need to make sure HSDPA is enabled in the ROM though, make sure you have a good radio, etc.
I'd recommend the latest Hyperdragon ROM, or still the most stable I have found is Dutty's Dutty 24MB WM6.1 Hybrid ROM, with Radio 1.58.16.27, 3.56SPL.
I agree. I use L26's V12 ROM (no Throttle) and I get around 500-800 kbps. Any other ROM that I used, as long as I made sure that HSDPA was enabled, I'd get the same thing.
How are you confirming that you're using HSDPA? Do you have an "E" symbol or an H symbol up on the top of the screen? Which bandwidth site are you using?
These are my results in SoCal using HSDPA:
How is this related to ROM Development? Can one of the mods move this (when they get up )?

I have tried every single ROM here, but sometimes when I try to answer a call the phone gets stuck.
The phone does it mostly on 3g mode, when i switch to GSM everything seems to work normally.
AT&t 3g is 850mhz here in Miami, I get 1.53mbps download speed but cant handle simple calls.
Is there a fix for this?
Thanks

All I can say is I have tried Dutty's 6.5, Miri's 6.5 and energy rom 6.5 and they all do it. I have tried 4 different radios and its still a problem. I hope someone on here can help because a phone that you cant answer calls with is real frustrating
Duttys 6.1 Turbo X didn't do it, but had issues with the SMS feature.

What Radio are you using? I had a very similar problem before I flashed a new radio.
I've been running Dutty's 6.5 R8 ROM & Radio since I got my phone last week and its been flawless on 3G in my area.

I am using 1.14.25.24 with the dll cab and my phone qulaity is excellent. Before this radio I was getting crappy reception, losing signal in areas of good strength. I also have my phone settings to WCDMA, GSM (1900 + 850) + UMTS (1900 + 850). Good luck.

I tried the band setting you mentioned, no luck. My signal is excellent everywhere I go, the problem is just when I answer calls.
I'll keep on flashing roms until I find one that works properly
have you guys tried different SIM cards to see if that may be causing the problem? if the problem doesn't occur in GSM mode, it might be signal related (i know i'm reaching here... using the process of elimination method). your respective delimas are perplexing.... i know this doesn't help, but i've had my device since March 09, live in an area where 850 3G coverage is not that strong, flashed a buttload of ROMs (4 this week) and 2 different radios and i (knock on wood) haven't encountered similar issues. you might consider flashing the latest Telstra ROM from HTC. don't know if it was leaked earlier, but based on the website the ROM was released on 7/23/09.
Same problem with my bothers SIM (also AT&t) Im going to request a new SIm and see what happens.
Im gonna try the telstra ROM, hopefully its better looking than the one that came witht he phone. Thanks.
I don't have another sim to try but I have also tried different radios and the problem remains. I did notice for whatever reason, Miris manila 2.5 rom with the "data connection" set to off but the "3G" set to on doesn't have the issue and sill works on 3G. I always thought "data connection" and "3G" had to both be on but it works. I tried the same method in the energy 6.5 rom but it doesn't let me configure the connection that way
Flashed Duttys 6.5 R9
Data Connection is OFF
3g Connection is ON
1.14.25.24 Radio
Phone Network Settings: Type AUTO GSM/UMTS Band: 1900 + 850
I'm testing it now, it seems to be working properly
The problem is still there, don't know what to do anymore
all of the sudden mine doesnt do it anymore, I have been using Dutty's R9 rom and Miri's 6.5/2.5 rom and every call can be answered fine. I happened to catch one of the "phone review" guys on youtube say that he has been having "call on the 3G network" issues but edge was working fine. He is in San Fran ( 2.5 Hours from me) so maybe it was/is a network issue???
Flashed Duttys 6.5 R9
Hard Reset
Installed Rilphone.dll
Turned phone off
Enter bootloader
Flashed 1.14.25.24 Radio
Soft Reset
Data Connection is OFF
3g Connection is ON
Phone Network Settings: Type WCDMA - GSM/UMTS Band: 1900 + 850
it has been working flawlessly for 2 days now.
I believe that the radio was flashed incorrectly the first time, it looked like it was successfully installed.
Closing thread as solution and rom flashed
im currently on valkyrie rom, and i wonder if there is a setting that allows me to only use the gsm net, not 3G for my xperia X1i, im experiencing poor signal strength at work.. please say there is and that it will work for me
Well, i've disabled 3G in Settings---> Phone
Then i also disabled 3G Data with "NoData" from MoDaCo http://htcdriver.com/index.php?page=nodata
Don't know anything about the valkyrie ROM, but i suppose you could do what i did.
In valkyrie you should have the option to change to GSM mode in CommManager.
i tried both metods, but i dont get any reception when i change the damn thing! probably my operator, im gonna call them
