Phone Icon on HTC Home Favorite People Screen - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III Themes and Apps

What does that mean, and how come its only on one of my contacts?

Its because you have that number saved as a "mobile phone" number. You will see a different Icon if you have the number saved as a "Home" phone number. I am guessing that the others on your list are from your sim card and as such are not saved with the number being specific for "mobile" "home" "office" etc.

If you only have 1 number stored for the contact it shows nothing, if you have 2+ numbers it shows icon for whether it's home/cell/work

Does anyone know if there is a way to get rid of that icon? Personally I find it annoying.

Saving two cell phone numbers under a contact

Hi,
I was wondering, if it is possible to save two mobile/ cell numbers under one contact, so when you are typing his/ her name in the new message page, both of them show up as options.
Thanks!
I don't think this is possible in Windows Mobile messaging.
--
Add recipient let's you pick the number though.
Ugh!
Crap...i know a lot of people who have two cell phones..primarily different cell numbers for different countries when they are travelling..i wish there was a way to store two cell numbers under one contact
yep most my contacts have 2 mobiles as well. some have 4 or more. I store em under the other fields like car, work2 etc etc. I guess we just have to work with what we have.
I think WM does not smart than Symbian in this. every cell phone or work phone or home phone number can use to send message
Umm
Right, I guess. But when you are typing an SMS, and you write a person's name in Windows mobile, by default only his cell phone number shows up. All other numbers, you need to go into the contact, copy the number and then paste it in your messaging window and then send it...unless there's a better way..(which I have no clue about!)...
Inesoft Address Book allows you to enter as many numbers for one contact as you want. Every number can have any label.
Awesome!
Thanks! I'll check it out!

instead of typing the name at once. hit enter. you'll be given your whole contact list. now start typing the name. select it and you will be given the option to select from all the numbers in the contact's card. so basically you just add 1 step to the process.
wow
i never knew we could do that! Thank you! Beats installing additional software!

Me image in Messaging app

Right so I know this question has been asked many times before, but none of the answers I find work for me.
Problem: is that in the messaging app (sms) there is no picture of "Me". Its just a grey rectangle with a white border.
Things I've tried:
Pressing the grey box to bring up menu: Pressing the box does nothing other the simply changing the border color from white to orange.
Clicking menu >> more >> add contact: no such option is available for me
Add myself as a contact in the phonebook: Done this with my number with and without country code and with email.
Add a picture to my profile in GTalk ('Talk'): I've had a picture there for ages, same one as was set on my google account online before I even got this phone. No luck here
I think that's all ive tried, but I may be forgeting something.
Possible explenations:
burnduck said:
I have tested it, and that "unknown" is the cause of greyed out picture.
I have 2 sim cards, one is 3UK, and the other one is one2free from Hong Kong. The phone recognises the 3UK phone number but not the one2free (it shows up as unknown).
I have both numbers under the same contact with a avatar / picture.
Nexus one shows up profile pics correctly with my 3UK sim card plugged in, but it greyed out all those pictures when I've plugged in the one2free sim card.
FYI all those messages were sent and received on the one2free (hk) number.
I know (at least in Hong Kong) there are a lot of carriers who don't put the phone number in SIM cards. It wasn't a big problem until now. :/ I wonder if there will be a solution addressing this problem.

What burnduck is refering to is in 'Settings>>About Phone>>Status>>My phone number'. This slot just says 'Unknown', has been this way in 2.1 as well.
All in all that seems like a plausible answer untill Rusty commented the following:

For the record in 'Settings>>Location & security>>Set up SIM card lock' the option to 'Lock SIM card' on/off does not work for me either. I can change the sim pin, but not disable it entirely.
Im wondering if some1 has any clever suggestions or work-arounds I can try. Im using a stock n1 with froyo 2.2. Any help would be greatly apprechiated.
This has now been solved! The problem is that your phone number is not stored in your sim. You need to put your sim in a phone that allows you to alter you "personal phone number". Its usually a setting found under 'special numbers' then something like 'my phone number'. Many people have been using their old phones to do this, some have used iphone. But this has been confirmed to work! Good luck all!
I also have this issue. only 1 SIM card.
i added myself to my contacts. then goto contacts and click add to cantacts. didnt change how number was displayed and didnt add any name and it works fine.

long press the greyed out pic in sms app then add to contacts.
then it will cgo to contacts page at the top just click add to contacts. dont change name or add number.
once added go to contacts select the contact, your number, and add a photo.
I'm having the same issues as described by the OP. Tried everything but still no picture.
I've sent a mail to my provider asking whether it is possible to remotely update my simcard information.

I originally tested going into the messaging app then into an existing conversation between me and some1 else on my contact list. Long pressing the grey pic then did nothing.
Now I just deleted myself and then sent an sms to myself. In this conversation with myself I now have 'Me' and 'my number(in numbers of course)'. I can't do anything with Me, but I can add 'my number' to my contact list as myself with my number and email. But still wont do anything to 'Me'.
Confusing but hopefully u understand.

Yeah, exactly the point I was trying to make.
i added my phone number to my google voice contact number, then i dragged a photo of myself onto the sd card, then edited my contact picture to use that photo. a long drawn out work around, but now it isn't blank at least.
i agree, it's a little stupid that it doesn't just grab your photo from either google or facebook, seeing as how it's totally synced up with those.

Calling Contacts

Ok, if I am missing something you guys can flame me for ever.
but....
go to ur contacts.. how do you call them from there?
u can edit them, get their nifty updates that i could really care less about. but you cannot initiate the call from your contacts view.
you have to go to your home page or the next page, then hit the phone tile then search in phone book at that point.
Which brings me to another point.. every touch phone I have used, even old non touch nokias let you either scroll on the side of the list to the name you want faster then scrolling through the entire alphabet, or type the letters of names to jump to them.
Both of those functions I do not see..
The more I use this phone, its becoming a glorified tile play thingy with a simple phone feature... am i missing something great here?

To start a call... you tap the text that says "call mobile" or whichever number you are trying to call under the contact's entry. That text seems rather self explanatory...
And to jump quickly to a certain letter, you tap any of the letter headings, and then tap the letter you want to jump to.
Also, there's a search symbol at the top of the contacts page, allowing you to search within contacts .. or, you could press the search hard key when in contacts view.
Thanks guys, did a reboot and then it started showing numbers for my contacts, when I first imported them, it showed their names, and profile to click on but no numbers or options to call or text them.
The scroller is a bit odd, cause if ur half way through the B's for example u have to get down to C, catch that little blue C and then select N's if that is what is needed.
Good luck doing that on the high way.
Question on email, how do you select all? on HD2, you go to options and select all and it would select all the emails listed, and easy to remove or delete.
Also how do you view several email accounts without having to go back to the home page tiles?
I run 3 diff email addies for my businesses, and really annoying to having to go go to home page every time to change which one Im viewing.
Crazy the book sais nothing of this.
Thanx
I have added my Live contact and outlook contact into my phone.
Is there a feature which allow me to filter and hide all my live contact.
I stored all my business contact in outlook, having live contact is expanding my contact list and making me confuse..
If your live account is the default account that you set the phone up with then no, I don't think there's a way to hide them at the moment.

have you read the manual or clicked on the text that shows up on first boot with tips and tricks???
If you click on people, you can click on the first blue letter/symbol to get the popup of the alphabet to sort.
Maybe you shouldn't drive and talk on your phone?
You cannot combine all the emails on this phone.
You also cannot select all messages, but if you press on the left of the message, check boxes appear and you can select or deselect messages, then delete, mark as read, mark as unread, move to folder.

ive read the manual, the full one that u dl of of htc site,
the reason i ask is because select all in email, or select diff email accounts from eamil view pane is basic features that ever phone I have ever used has had, even old nokias that were not smart phones, HD2 has that ability.
On select all, hell every phone dating back from the old 6190's had that on SMS and email.
Just surprised that this phone does not have that, its like many basic features are missing from a release model, which to me is dumb, why release a half done product.
Im not asking for special features, but if they put out the phone in a hurry for the holiday season, at least make it competitive with other OS's.
Ill give them that its simple, almost to simple cant even choose normal colors for your tiles, just girly ones, or make the colors different in ways that it looks interesting, but features like select all, copy, paste, multi tasking and (in contacts list ) the ability to scroll through letter choices without having to catch a blue letter should be there. I have over 340 contacts, so if i am half way through my list of J's and I need to jump to N, i have to scroll up or down to get to I or down to K to then select one and get the letters mode, then select which letter and hope its the right one while doing it on the move. Not efficient.

i just use the voice command lol

Random question about contacts

Ok - this is not unique to the X, but dont know where else to post it. What do you guys do when you have a lot of people from an office with the same office number in your phone? I.e., I work with John, Sally and Chris who all work at ABC Corp and the phone number is 456-789-1234. When ANYONE from the company calls, that caller ID will come through. For whatever reason, my phone will display Sally (example). I only want it to display the company name. What do you do? If I add a dedicated contact for the company, how will it delineate between them?

without testing, it's either alphabetical or indexed, meaning it will display the first instance of the phone number it comes across. For me, if I don't have a personal line for an individual, i remove that number from their contact info.
I'm not sure what will happen if you have two contacts with the same number in People. I would guess that whichever comes first in the default sort will appear as the caller.
What I do is set up a contact with just the company name, and put the various contacts for that Co. in the notes field. Of course you won't know "who" is calling you from that company, but if they all have the same number, how is Android to know?

As said above, I can't remember if it's alphabetical or indexed, but I believe it's alphabetical (i.e. if you work with John, Sally and Chris, Chris' name will always show up from that contact). If that's the case, you could create a contact like "A-Acme Corp" since "A" displays higher on the list.
Frankly, though, I don't think it's useful to have multiple people with the same office number, and I just create an office contact and delete the number from the individual contacts. It's not really "their" number if it's shared, so I'd rather have the contact really indicate who I'm calling, which is the company, not the person.

most of the companies i've worked for/with have had a phone system with one external, but multiple internal lines. when i sync my contacts with exchange, the internal number is synced, so i am able to dial those individuals directly. however, if they call me, i have no idea who it is.
the only exception i've had to this rule are small businesses where you call and ask if you can talk to "sally" or whatever (or they don't have extensions, or the extensions aren't externally facing, etc). in that case, i don't bother with individualized contacts. i'll have a contact that says, "State Farm (Betty)" or something similar, so I know who to ask for.

This is definitely a valid use case. There has to be a way to set as a default phone number a specific contact, then you would add a generic contact for "home" or "Company XYZ".

I understand, I'm not saying my solution is the only way to do it. Just that it's one way to do it.
I have a "Home" contact that has my home phone number and home address. I don't need my girlfriend to have our home phone number listed on her contact, I just know I call "home" when I need to call home.

That is certainly a solution. i could set up separate contacts for "home", "husband at work", and "husband's cell phone". But it seems simpler to keep all him contact information in one place. Same for my kids, who also have multiple phone numbers.
A lot of Google services seem to assume that a phone number is only relevant for a single person. I think that's a design flaw, as it's often not true. It's not a big deal in looking up contacts, but google phone numbers are essentially broken, as it won't let two different google phone numbers point to the same home number. (and there are three of us who would like to have the google number ring there at least some of the time.)

to your point, i'd be interested in seeing how other devices are handling it. i don't think its a design flaw at all. phone numbers have "always" been individualized. your home phone goes to "one" caller ID description (whether you change it with the phone co or not) - it's always going to say "The Smiths" regardless of who is placing the phone call to whom.
if you add "The Smiths" phone number to Mr., Mrs., Sally and Jr., it's still "The Smiths" phone number.
Harry Smith could be calling you on your caller ID, but it's really Jr....
i don't know any way around this, personally, short of the suggestions listed above. There's no solution for what you're asking. What do you want, voice recognition? And I'm sorry if that comes off a little snarky, but I honestly can't think of a way to handle a grouping of contacts that use the same contact information. What it sounds like you're asking is a way to create a "The Smiths" phone book entry, and marking it as "show as incoming call" so you don't jump to conclusions of who is on the other line.
I understand that the "from" address has to be "the Smiths", or some single name. But I am really frustrated that Google Voice can't pipe my calls and my son's calls both to our home phone number, even if it could only show one of them names if we replied from that number. Both of us would like to recieve calls at that number when we are at home.
It might be relevant that my house gets lousy service on every major cell carrier.

well forwarding multiple numbers to a single number is an entirely different issue than your original post. i've never been in your situation (that i can think of) so i can't relate. although i find it interesting google would care how many numbers were forwarded to a single number.
if you're already using google voice numbers, why not use google voice to place calls on your cells? that way, if Jr. gets a call on his GV #, it will ring his personal cell phone.

Because then we don't get calls when we are at home -- thus the desire to have google voice numbers sometimes forward to the home number.
This is actually WHY I don't use google voice. Because so long as it depends on my being the only user of any number I want it to farward to, it's basically broken for me.
Anyhow, I agree that this is entirely different from the problem that started the thread. I just live with the phone always showing my daughter when I place or recieve a call to my home. That's annoying, but not broken from a usability standpoint. (My preference would be for it to show the same person I looked up when I placed the call for outgoing calls, and my husband for incoming calls, since he calls me more than the others, and obviously, the phone has no way to know who is on the other end.) I just brought up the google voice thing to point out that Google doesn't seem to have put a lot of effort into usability when phone numbers are shared.
if you're using IP phone (using GV to make/receive calls), service has nothing to do with it. Just use your broadband connection.

Contacts error?

When I pull up the contacts on the Gear, It shows some of my phone numbers as just telephone numbers, which are tied to contacts in my google. But if I scroll to the contact they are also in the contact name info as well. I thought I might have extra contacts in my phone but they all have name identifiers.

But if I scroll to the contact they are also in the contact name info as well. I thought I might have extra contacts in my phone but they all have name identifiers.
