Archiving and Deleting SMS... - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

I recently installed the palm SMS app to my tilt, and now every time I load up the app I get 10 *new* text messages that are from months ago. I had thousands of messages already on my tilt and I guess for some reason they come in unthreaded 10 at a time every time I start it now.
How do I delete all my old text messages, and if possible save them externally? I tried deleting the "messages" folder under windows but that didn't work and they are suddenly reappearing there after restart.... 10 at a time.
Where else are they saved? How do I get rid of them??? Thanks!

You can you use PIM backup for saving your SMS externally or Jeyo SMS backup which is a good sms backup tool (but it ain't free...).

The SMS's that are re-appearing are probably held on your SIM card (remember those old days!) and Pocket Outlook is just loading them back in every time.
You need to delete SIM messages to get rid of them.
If you can't do it through your Kaiser, find an ancient basic Nokia phone, put the SIM in that and see if the SMS's are there then delete them.

Guide to restoring threaded SMS

Since threaded sms arrive with WM6.1 it seems that it has been difficult to get PIM Backup to restore your messages properly threaded on a consistent basis. Now many people will advise you to just delete your sms, but if you are a person who likes to keep them (like myself) then that simply is not an acceptable option. Through a lot of trial and error i have arrived at a process that seems to work well and work consistantly across many roms. Below is a brief tutorial of the steps I follow in order to restore my sms messages using PIM Backup:
You will need Kaisertweak to follow these instructions, and as such i have attached the cab to this post. Please remember to donate the the developers who bring you all of this fine software as a sign of your appreciation for all that they do for you.
Perform the following steps:
1) Disable threading using Kaisertweaks.
2) Kill sms/mms process using task manager (tmail.exe)
3) Restore messages using PIM Backup
4) Open to see they were restored correctly (meaning the right number of messages are in the inbox/outbox)
5) Soft-reset your device.
6) Enable threading using Kaisertweaks.
7) Open sms/mms, if the inbox appears empty then messages start appearing then do nothing as the device is threading your messages. Just wait till it is done. If this is not happening then go to step 8.
8) Kill sms/mms process (tmail.exe) using task manager, and open sms/mms again. This time you should definitely see the message threading.
Please let me know if this works for you, or if you have any suggestions of what to add or how to make this post clearer (for suggestions i'd prefer them by PM)
***EDIT***
I have also found that PowerSMS does a great job of rethreading your SMS messages as well as PIMBackup, so if you have troubles getting this to work with PIMBackup, then try that program. I will outline the steps I followed:
1) Disable threading
2) Kill tmail.exe
3) Make Backup using PowerSMS
4) Flash new rom
5) Disable threaded SMS & kill tmail.exe
6) Restore SMS
7) Enable Threading
8) Leave the phone alone while it rethreads the messages, can take up to 10 minutes depending on how many messages you have. I restored over 3,000.
***UPDATE***
It has been reported that you do not need to disable threading if you are using PowerSMS. This means you can do the following:
1) Kill tmail.exe
2) Make Backup using PowerSMS
3) Flash new rom
4) Restore SMS
5) Leave the phone alone while it rethreads the messages, can take up to 10 minutes depending on how many messages you have.
Didn't try it yet, but thanks!
I have tried many of these methods, but restoring always put my sent messages first and my received messages after.
In the alternative, I recommend Jeyo SMS Backup as it restores threading properly without a hassle.
Nice guide mate, so obvious now you've posted it, why didn't I think of this
This method has also had limitted success: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1903404&postcount=749
I would add this to the PIM backup thread if I were you and maybe PM DotFred to get it on the first post. (Or get a mod to do it if they can)
A Couple of things...
Where is the aformentioned attachment?
What is the SMS/MMS process, TMail.exe I assume?

Thanks for the suggestions, i will post it there, and PM dotfred. Also i have updated the first post to specify tmail.exe, and added the cab.
Just wanted to say that I tried this method and it worked perfectly
Had around 1500 text messages, so it took about 10-15 minutes on the new rom to load them all back into the threaded sms, but finally all was good again
Thanks!

Thank you for the feedback. I also have 1500+ sms at any given time so i was glad to find a method that finally worked as well.
Seems like it's working.
But with the non-threaded sms i can see the time and date on each text message.
In the threaded sms style, you can only see the time from the day you're on. Older text messages just have the date.
Is there a fix for this ?

There should be a way, because the information is still there, somewhere. I know, because I use Extreme Text, which is just a nicer interface for doing threaded text messaging (uses the same data, doesn't disturb normal Messaging program) - and all the times of day are there for all messages going back several months.
Yeah,
If you disable threaded sms and you restore all your text messages you still have the dates and times, it's just not shown in the default threaded.
Great thread pal. Tried it and worked perfectly. Always had problems restoring messages and the dates and times always were distorted....Not anymore though. Thanks
I'm glad this is helping people out. Thank you all for your confirmations.
Just a quick note, this worked for me as well using PIMBackup. I used Advanced Config instead of KaiserTweak. Such a simple solution, but I'm glad you thought of it.
worked perfectly.....
thanks for the share
for some reason my MMS msgs from windows 5 would not transfer :/ on some of the roms i had it work some how, but i tried to create a "MMS" account with fake email stuff and set it to manual so it would not try to get info or download and it seems to have fooled it, for a sec, you see the subject and the size of the file but when you open them they are blank :/
im wondering if there is any way to move them outside of that MMS account to the real sms/mms folder?
is there any way to read the pimbackup in desktop computer and extract those msgs?
when i mean it doesnt work it simply says during restore process that the MMS account does not exist and all files will be ignored

this seem like an excellent thread. however i am havign a few problems. when i do PIM restore, it says it had retreived about over 4000 files. after restore i check my messages. most, if not, all of them r just messages that i have sent. i have waited over an hour and none of the messages i got from my friends are showing up. how ever, i see in the preview the first 100 text that are from my friends but not in the threaded
edit*
ok it seems that i have got all the text messages on the phone. however, the order is all off. some of them shows the recieved messages before all of my sent ones, and some of them vice versa. some of them has the dates going b ackwards. can someone help me on this?
anyone? =[
The way I do it is very simple and has worked every time across multiple hard-resets. The key is to do all your backup and restoring in CLASSIC mode, not THREADED mode.
1) Set text messaging from threaded to classic
2) PPCPimBackup all text messaging
3) Perform hard-reset
4) Set text messaging from threaded to classic AGAIN after hard-reset
5) Restore PPCPimBackup
6) Set text messaging back to threaded!
I have only tried this on my Touch Pro but it has worked multiple times. If you skip any step when going from threaded to classic you get the problem where the threaded messages are all out of order. Also if you receive new un-backed up messages after the hard reset the restore will work as long as you configure text messaging to classic before restoring.
When restoring sms with more then 4000 it appears that the really long ones don't rethread correctly.. all the others will but the ones with a lot loads the received first followed by all the sent.. is there a fix for this?
Hey guys, I've got a problem.
So I made a PIMbackup of all my sms's. I then flashed my phone to another ROM and tried restoring the sms's. Didn't seem to work properly, so I then hard reset the phone and disabled SMS threading. I then restored the texts from the backup file, and then re-enabled threading.
Now, all the texts are there, however, they're pretty much sorted according to date.
For example, if I had a sms convo of about 5 msgs back and forth between a friend and I, it's sorted by that day where it has all of their messages first (incoming) and then my messages after (outgoing).
So they are threaded, but they're split into incoming then outgoing for each day per person.
Does anyone know how to fix this? It doesn't seem to be threading properly...does anyone have or had a similar problem? Thanks!

new to topaz.. issue on restoring/sent message

Hi all
Got my topaz phone just yesterday, it is magnificent!
But I am upgrading from a Eten X500+ phone, after I tried to restore messages from my old phone to the new one, the new one now cannot record any new sent messages.
In my opinion, this can be the backup program... I used spb backup. I may doing something with the file attributes in order to make it record sent messages again. But which file?
My x500+ is already dead so I have no way going back and do the backup again, unfortunately
Please advice
Thanks
Unfortunately it looks like SPB Backup might be the problem. The eten was Windows Mobile 5 I believe? And the Diamond 2 is 6.1, so there may have been differences between folder locations / formats between the two. My understanding is that SPB Backup makes an exact copy of the database from the old phone and dumps it on the new phone. Perhaps thats where the problem lies.
I routinely use PIM Backup to save and restore text messages from one phone to another, or in the case of flashing a new ROM. I'd recommend using it in future as it extracts the individual messages in their particular folders and transplants them perfectly in the new phone. For now I think you'll just have to abandon the sent messages.
thanks for your reply.
another question, my phone showed only one of maybe 10 messages on the SIM card. Those messages where copied from my temporary cell phone last week and i would love to see my TD2 showing them. Any ideas?
try to sync your messages, contacts etc.. with microsoft's myphone. It worked fine for me

Completly Wiping SMS -> Phone Restart -> SMS returns

Hi everyone, i hope this hasnt been resovled before, but i did a few searches and came up blank.
Ive had my TyTn II for quite a while now, and managed to rock up 48000 SMS on it, which stuffed up the memory, making me do a hard reset. But now i have a different problem.
I tried to delete all my SMS, which was about 14000, as i didnt want a repeat of what happened last time, but after a long tiime the SMS appeared to delete, so i did a soft reset, and about 6900 SMS remain, all in sent items. i tried again, and the same thing occoured. also once after resetting the SMSes that i sent/recieved the past day dissapeared.
Has anyone expierenced a problem like this? i think its a corrupt SMS in the Data files somewhere, but i really dont want to fish out a particular one, or hard reset my phone again.
And FYI im running the stock 6.1 TyTn II AUS ROM (Rom version 3.29.710 WWE)
Thankyou for your help
not completely sure whats going on but i have a suggestion worth trying out...
assuming your requirement is to keep a clean house with a minimum number of text items in your inbox and sent items, i imagine you would like to archive those messages (as opposed to simply deleting them) as a bonus.
search for "pimbackup" here on xda and download it and install it to your device. pimbackup has two kinds of backup operations:
1. backup and keep existing items
2. backup and REMOVE the backed up items
try option 2...this way, you will have an archive of all those text messages and you can let pimbackup handle the mass delete operation...who knows, maybe it will "stick" better than a manual mass deletion.
good luck!
i thought when u delete messages it just goes to the deleted folder not really off the phone go to that folder in messaging and delete them from there or from the pc.
Yes, but the default limit for deleted items is 50 messages. then it starts rolling them off and deleting...

Can't open SMS in Threaded SMS

Hi all..
I've tried searching to no avail.
Only today I can't seem to open any SMS in Threaded SMS mode. Whenever I tried to use Reply or Open any sms, nothing happens.
After disabling Threaded SMS, I'm able to open any SMS.
Any1 encounter such problems before?
I'm using PDA Corner V19 (I think) Win 6.1.
Had no problems for so many mths using the ROM.
Thanks in advance.
just an update of what I did before the problems started:
think problem started when I edited threaded_sms.htm to delete the word count as per what I'd read from http://www.fuzemobility.com/page/4/
here's part of the post...
So you can do this tweak in one of two ways. You can overwrite the file thread_sms.htm with bradyonly’s file (or if you’re using 6.5 then use hibby50’s) or you can just do it yourself. The DIY method is pretty simple. Just open up thread_sms.htm (you can copy this file to your desktop and open it in notepad or if you’re using Total Commander locate the file and then press the pen/paper icon at the bottom and it will open in notepad on your phone). Then locate the line that begins “<Inbox: content id=”COMPSESUBJECT” width=”98%”… and delete the single word “count” from that line then hit ‘save’ (or if you used your PC then overwrite the file) and soft reset your phone. And you’re done.
I did make a copy of the original threaded_sms.htm file. Once my threaded sms had problems, I had copied back the original file.
But it still didn't work...
i have problem with my message is can't open new message anh reply
So. how do it fixing?
I had the same problem few days ago.. I received two sms and after them I had immediatelly received an mms, so all of the previous sms were gone and the mms was looking as the first message in the conversation. But there were still two unread messages.. I wasn´t able to get to them until I turned off threaded sms via registry.. I didn´t know what to do, so I had to do HR
I am having the same issue on a Niki 100, anyone with any idea of the solution?
I hadn't editied anything, just flashed the ROM and I can only use SMS in non-threaded mode.
DT
I miss having threaded sms haha

If you miss it that much hard-reset is the solution.

Microsoft My Phone - SMS restore problem for Xperia!

So I decided to try flash another ROM, and this time I thought I'd try backing up my personal data using the Microsoft My Phone service, just to see how it works. As well as that, I made a complete backup of my phone using SPB backup.
The ROM flashing over, I attempted to restore my old sms messages to the phone from the server, and the My Phone application DID appear to download them. However, upon checking my inbox (as well as every single other mail folder), I found nothing. Delving a little deeper, I was able to find a couple of pre-ROM-flashing messages using the phone's built-in search function; when installing My Phone, I let microsoft text me the link, and a search for 'my phone' illicited the old text message. However, the search function does not allow for me to trace messages back to their location, and this message (even after being opened) did not appear in the sms inbox.
I haven't lost anything because of my other backup, but if possible I would like to find all of these loose messages floating about somewhere in the memory banks of my Xperia. It would be nice if Microsoft got it half right, like normal. Does anybody have an idea where to start?
