I'm getting rid of my phone soon, and would like to know where my hundreds of texts are.
This would be too logical for Windows software, but might it be all the little files in Windows > Messaging ?
Not sure if those are the messages, but they're no use to any other (non-Windows Mobile) phone....
Why don't you use DotFred's PPCPimBackup tool (here) to backup the SMS'es - then you can extract them (they're in a .CSV format) from the phone and save them on your PC.
Just a thought......
Mark.
Thanks for quick reply. I'll try that. Those little .MPBs do look very useless...
They are located into "cemail.vol".....
if you are planning to buy a non WM phone i don't think you will be able to transfer the messages.
Where does that file reside ? It isn't in Windows...

True, but what about being able to keep them on computer and be able to read them ?..
You can use jeyo mobile to transfer the text messages into outlook or use PPCPim backup and then extract the files inside which are csv files (like Mike crouch has already stated) the backup file can be copied to your pc and then extracted with winrar or winzip, its just a zip file anyway(just named differently) but if all you want is for them to be stored on the pc just use jeyo mobile and it will sync them to outlook for you and add an extra folder for them
While I'm a Mac user (yeah, I'll just get an iPhone someday), I do have an XP set up that I run, but my phone never connected to it. Nor would it connect to the Vista machine downstairs. So, connection-required actions just aren't feasible for me.
Back to PPCPim: I changed its backup file to a ZIP and got inside, but the different PIM files (tasks, messages...) are different .pb– files, where – is b or p or t... Changing them to .zip doesn't work. Is WinRAR supposed to decompress those as they are, .pb– ?
change the file extension to csv
Oh, those to CSV, ok. Thanks then.
What would open the CSV file ? Internet Explorer didn't.
Ok, got them open.
Talk about a mess of data ! But at least I can view them without Windows Mobile now. Thanks for the help.

Sorry if this has already been covered but I didn't get any hits searching for it.
When I used WM5 I could always read and edit NOTES from the PDA on the PC using MS Word, I just double clicked the file and it opened in Word as an INK file, but since upgrading to the Kaiser this is no longer possible with a double click, I now have to open word first then open a .PWI file?
Does anyone else have this problem?
Sorry if this is covered by another thread. My search did not give me those data.

I could never read notes in my PC except by putting them on the main memory and syncing to Outlook.
I discovered I can copy the notes (PWI) to a folder in my old PC (XP) and double-click them to be open in Word, but nothing happens.
On my new PC, (Vista) they are unrecognised, directly, so the type of file is not supported by any app.
But today I could open a TextMaker empty session (I use SoftMaker office for working in my PPC and also have the version for PC) and then I dropped into it one of my notes stored in a folder in my PC. It opened well and I could read it. I think it does not support images, as I had some problems to read/copy/paste info from a blank note which had a small text and a drawing.
If this works, this helps not to synch the notes from a storage card, but for reading them if they're copied to the PC.
You can make ActiveSync automatically convert .pwi files to .txt or .rtf by opening ActiveSync, and selecting Tools > Advanced Tools > Edit File Conversion Settings. In the 'Device to Desktop' tab, select 'InkWriter/Note Taker/Notes Document', click Edit, and change the format to .txt or .rtf.
amikula THANKS to your post I finally solved my problems!! thanks!!!
Could you please tell us aswell how you solved the problem. Thx
just as amikula said! Thanks great solution.Thank you!!!
Hey all. I have changed to a HTC phone that doesn't have .pwi files. I still need to read/convert my HTC HD .pwi files. I am on Windows 7. Anyone?
After long last, I have a new laptop and a new Kaiser. Had to get rid of the 8525 since I could get such a hell of a deal on it.
It's been a few months since I had been on the forum because of the laptop issues, but now I have Vista (blah) and things are a bit different. But luckily, I have voided the warranty w/in 5 hours of having my phone.
Glad to be back, but couldn't find any threads that answered my question.
Does anyone know how to access the Windows directory on the mobile device via Vista Windows Explorer??
I am trying to copy some .png files over to the windows directory to replace the HTC HOME items, but it won't let me on the old desktop I had so I was just going to stick with the laptop and mess with my phone through that. The old Hermes thread said I could just transfer files like welcomehead.96 over to the directory to overwrite, but I keep getting errors.
Can anyone direct me? or PM some answers? Thanks
In Windows, choose TOOLS, Folder Options, View and then uncheck "Hide protected operating system files"
You are getting errors when trying to overwrite the files because they are in the rom. Vista's built in system file protection will not allow the files to be overwritten. Your best bet is to copy the files to My Documents on the phone, and then use Total Commander to move them into the Windows directory.
ahh.. i did not know they are built into roms now... thanks
back a couple years when I had my Tilt (Kaiser) I created a folder "FilesToBeDeleted" as a temporary folder. After I deleted the folder, I found it residing on the phone windows directory... Deleted it. and this folder keeps coming back and forth. When I upgraded to the ATT FUZE (Rafael) I used the same SD card and now the folder keeps coming back.
Does anyone has any idea why the folder keeps coming back? Thanks
i think this is something like the recycle bin in windows desktop's version. I am not sure what uses it though, it might be the regular file explorer or other explorers like Total Commander and the like.

The only program that uses recycle bin is Resco explorer. neither total commander nor the windows mobile explorer uses recycle bin. I never used Resco... But thanks for the try, hopefully someone else ran into this problem before. I just hope isnt a virus or some sort of thing.
hey all~
i don't have a solution but i did want to say, your not alone...i have the same exact problem, lol i even used a kraiser priviously and am now using the same memory card (that i DID wipe)

"Filestobedeleted" is a generic folder name used for alot of programs and the microsoft installation, it could just be that it keeps appearin cuz ur installing programs, and there the tempory files or other temp files form software that updated itself
Yeah, if you make a cab file with Quickcab, and are only making a reg change with the cab, you have to add a file to the cab to get it to work. Most people stick a blank .txt file in and send it to filestobedeleted.
Hi, so I'm hoping to be getting my Galaxy S tomorrow and I was wondering if anyone knew of a relatively quick and simple way of transferring the data from my old N95 8GB to the SGS, stuff like contacts, texts, music and photos etc.
My main concern is the contacts and texts, as I can just use drag and drop to move photos and music but if there's a way to do it all at the same time that'd be great. I know you can use Nokia PC Suite to do it between Nokia phones, but I'm fairly certain it's not going to work between Nokia and Samsung
No-one know any way to do it then?

For your contacts, export them to your N95 sd card (they go there as vcf in others/contacts), and then use "vcardio" from the market to transfer them to your galaxy. (you can first copy all the vcf's into one big one to avoid doing one by one - (copy *.* contacts.vcf.))
For your sms messages, use ovi suite first to back them up, then use nokia2android (http://www.simail.si/download/Nokia2AndroidSMS.7z) to convert that backup to an xml file, and finally use "sms backup and restore" from the market to load them to your galaxy.
For your music and photos...use your pc to move them
Don't need to convert them... on galaxy from contacts app the is an import contacts from SD card option. It will let you import the vcf files u saved on the Nokia.

Excellent, this is exactly what I wanted, thanks very much. However, there is one teeny little problem. The SD card on the N95 8GB is built in and non removable. If I back them up to the mass memory (SD Card) could I then copy the .vcf files off onto my PC and then onto the SGS that way (I'm assuming yes, don't see why not)?

Correct, that's what I meant, and that's also why the method proposed above by lgkahn won't work in your case. Same story with the n97.
Brilliant, thanks very much

A little confused. When do I use this method; 'copy *.* contacts.vcf.'? After the transfer to the computer or during the transfer to the SGS? Is this typed from with the 'Vcardio' app or within window?

It's not a method, it's just a command. You can put this in a batch file and run it on your phone, but here's the less complicated version. I'll write everything, if this is too basic for you I apologise, but I'd rather cover everything now in 10 steps:
1) Export all the contacts to the sd card (called mass memory on the N95 8GB)
2) Connect the phone to your pc in mass storage mode, and find the folder Others\Contacts. Select it, and ctrl-c
3) Open My Computer, find Local Disk C:\, and paste it there (Ctrl-V). Now you will have the folder Contacts in C:
4) Open a command prompt (Windows button + R, 'cmd' ). You'll see C:\Users\(your name) or C:\Documents and settings\(blah), depending on which version of Windows you use.
5) Type 'cd \' (without the quotes). You'll see a prompt C:\>
6) Type 'cd Contacts'. You'll have a prompt C:\Contacts>
7) Type 'dir' . If everything is there, you will see a list of vcf files.
8) Type 'copy /B *.vcf allcontacts.vcf' . Then exit from the command prompt.
Go back to the window with the Contacts on your PC, and you will see one file called allcontacts.vcf, that you just created, and which contains everything.
9) Connect your Galaxy S to the PC in mass storage mode and mount it.
10) Copy the allcontacts.vcf file from C:\Contacts\ to your sdcard/, and then after disconnecting your phone, use the VcardIO app to find the allcontacts.vcf file, load it on your Galaxy S, and that's that.
Now you can delete the folder Contacts from your C drive, or move it somewhere else just in case.
P.S. In the case of linux or a mac, the 'combining the vcf files into one' command, would be 'cat *.vcf >> allcontacts.vcf' , or 'fmt -sp *.vcf > allcontacts.vcf' respectively.
I'm having a little trouble using the VcardIO app. When I click Import it starts importing the contacts, gets to about 95% on the progress bar and then just sits and does nothing, none of the contacts seem to be imported either
Interesting... I've tried it on 2 occasions now and it worked perfectly both times. Maybe there's a weird contact format it's getting stuck on? Maybe one with a big picture or some strange info? Take a look at the .xml file and check if you can spot anything out of the ordinary... *shrug*

I got fed up and did it the (really) tedious way, opened each .vcf in Kies and then transferred them over. Thanks for the help anyway
Just in case anybody searches for this thread, I found an easy way to do this.
My N95 screen was busted so I had no in phone commands.
1. Nokia PC Suite- backup contacts to nbu file
2. Used (website- can't link) tienhuis.nl/nokia-pc-suite-empty-contact-list-fix to create a .vcf file
3. Mounted SGS and copied across .vcf file to sd/
4. Used Contacts-Menu-More-Import/Export-Import from SD card
5. Voila.
I too had the issue with vCardIO stopping at 95%, but this way seems to work too.
My answer is a bit late...

Hi! When i want to send file from other phone to my htc hd7, i see message "not supported". How do i repair this?
The easy answer is to take a seat and pray that M$ come up with the goods. In other words you cant send anything over BT at this moment in time.
With WP7, the only way to transfer files is via Zune, SkyDrive or email em to your device. That's the reason why they disabled access to the storage card. I can't believe I'm saying this, but, I'm used to it now.

definetley not recommended. Easy way to screw up your sd card. WP7 does not have a file system as such, therefore transferring files can only be done via Zune and now in mango trough SkyDrive or email always. Read this answer from Microsoft: "WP 7 doesn't support any profiles that would allow you to transfer files via BT, so there is no point in trying to connect to a laptop. Your option is e-mailing a file to yourself.
In Mango you will have the option of saving the file to Skydrive via WiFi or Cell Data. Stil not directly to a laptop however.
Notice there is no file system, so no explorer that you could get to the file and say 'send via BT', no option within an open document menu that says 'send via BT'. There is no BT transfer directory, and if you could attach via BT the file explorer on your PC would not be able to navigate to a file to download, because, again, there is no visible file directory structure."
