GPS - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

Hey, Just received my new HTC Diamond yesterday, and the phone looks brilliant.
Hope it performs as good as it looks.
1 small thing though.
can you use the GPS without being connected to the internet?
Also is there any Freeware GPS software.
Have contacted the local Garmin dealer, but he said that phone needs to have an SD / Mini SD card (which the phone does not have )
(and yes, only Garmin have maps for Malta)
Anyone know a way I can bypass this as I really want to use the phone's functionality to it's full, AND NO I'M NOT LOOKING FOR A WAY TO GET WAREZ GPS, I JUST WANT TO BE ABLE TO INSTALL A DECEND GPS SYSTEM TO MY PHONE, so no spanking pls

Yes you can use the GPS with a WIFI connection...as for your other questions??...sorry cant help you there.

Problem is that a Wifi connection is not always available.
Is there any way to install Garmin direct to the phone's memory??

Yes You Can Use GPS
Hi,
I have One and i am in Canada Toronto and i am using TomTom-7 and it's work nice you don't need WIFI or any internet the Diamond has GPS in the phone so all you need the GPS software like (TomTom) or any and install to your phone i install canada/USA map and it's work fine.
So you don't need WIFI or any kind of internet,

The problem is that only Garmin has maps for Malta, and Garmin Malt on has the install Via Media card, He said that They have no install direct to memory (For Malta)., he also said that if you extract the data from the card and copy via PC (and activesync cable) to internal memory data will lock.
Any opinions??
Thanks

Send me a message Via PM, and i should be able to help. An hour or 2 in Gzira with the software and my laptop, and i am sure we can get it to work! I have a diamond as well!

to use gps without internet connection you need to disable aGPS (assistedGPS which diamond has and which means that diamond uses both gps and internet to lock on the position faster)
to disable it install schap's advanced config v3.0 or any similar app like pocket toolman, diamond tweak....

hi piranha, i am using garmin xt and it works fine with the internal gps chip.
you can send a mp and i tell you how to do it.
best regards

Hello Piranha,
I am exactly in the same position, I'm living in Sri Lanka and Garmin seems to be the only provider of GPS Maps here.
Did you succeed to make your GPS work?

Garmin Malta
Hi Piranha--
I am from Malta and I just bought an HTC Diamond. Can u pls tell me where did u download Garmin from and did you install in on the internal storage of the mobile?

You can download it officially from garmin web site
http://www8.garmin.com/software/GarminMobileXTforWindowsMobile_50010w.exe
There are many manuals about installing Garmin Mobile Xt on Diamond.
And for Malta, I think, that if you will buy Malta maps for Garmin, so you can use these maps in Mapsource software, which is garmin maps managing application for every garmin device. (after installing Garmin Mobile Xt on your Diamond, mapsource will communicate with Win device like with other Garmin generic devices.)

VPHK,
I had tried purchasing Maps from Garmin Malta (Medcomms Ltd),
BUT they would only supply on a card, and they would not accept me installing to internal memory, hence for my reason to get it elsewhere.

Help! Garmin and my new TyTN II

Just have purchased my new toy here in Thailand. Everything works fine exept the Garmin Mobile 10 XT software delivered with the Kaiser here in Thailand. The Garmin sw is not able to find the intenal GPS receiver. (com4 as recommended on the web by several poeple).
Regardless 2 days searching on the net in this forum and anywhere else I was not able to find any answers. The only thing what I have realized that some poeple can use th software withjout any problems and some have problems like me and are not able to solve them.
Please help anyone!!!
Anyone?? Please
Is there anyone who can help?
bump.. same issue :9
maybe you will find some helpfull info on this thread LINK For me on my TyTn II Garmin Mobile XT work normaly with internal GPS(Com4)...
Ha,
you have been falling into the Garmin trap.
Garmin Mobile 10/20 a.s.o. work ONLY with the original Garmin GPS Bluetooth receiver. The internal GPS cannot be used with these versions since the unlock code for the software is the Garmin GPS receivers Bluetooth MAC address.
The only Garmin SW which works with the internal GPS is Garmin Mobile XT. But then again, you have to use the generic MicroSD card from Garmin with the SW on since the unlock code is the SD card ID (which cannot be altered).
I was in the same situation and I was able to solve the problem via the internet. Use Google to find a solution.

Thanks for Your replay Graf Zeppelin. The strange thing is the Original (no copy) CD have been delivered inside the HTC TyTN II box in Thailand from the official agent SIS (sealed with a SIS sticker) including an explaination how to install it on the SD micro card. The only thing is that the GPS receiver cant be dedected.
So, if they deliver this SW with the PDA one should expect it to work...??? I may will visit SIS or/and the agent for GARMIN in Thailand next week in order to find some answers maybe.

Which GPS App for s730?

Hello
Does anyone of you us the s730 with an external GPS?
If yes, which application do you use for Routing? TomTom? Navigon?
TomTom doesn't work very well on the S730. They don't produce a SP specific version so you're stuck with the PocketPC version, which kind of works if you use FakeCursor, but it's a right faff, only useful if you already have TomTom Navigator and don't want to spend on anything else.
As for the anything else, CoPilot 7 looks good, although I haven't tried it.
Fount on S710 forum:
The best one is Garmin Mobile XT for Windows Mobile Ver. 4.10.40w, here is the link
That looks terrible!
I'm using Route66 Mobile 7, and I find it very well made.
Hehe, Garmin XT tested some Years ago (was fixed to only garmin GPS receivers)
Now they make the finnish better and open the restrictions between XT and Garmin GPS Receivers.
All what i can say: it works
BG Joy
Also Navigon NMM6 is for specifically for smartphones. I have just got a copy, screenshots are great, but since I only have 1GB card (maps are just below 2GB) I have not had chance to try it yet.
Besides TomTom 5.2 - 5.26 haas also been made for smartphons nd does not require touchscreen.
I've swapped an old copy of TomTom Mobile 5.2 to my S730 and it works perfectly. Ok, the maps are getting a little old but major routes don't change that often! If anything it's better than it was on my C500 - the display is much clearer.
I'm using the TomTom BT GPS to connect, and that works fine with Google Maps.

I had TomTom 5.2 unfortunately only for Symbian 60! When I upgraded to TomTom 6.0 it included all formats but Smartphone was no longer supported
You could try CoPilot 7 which is available for Windows Mobile and you may be lucky enough for it to use your working internal GPS on your device Dumdidum

Thanks but buying this on good luck-base... nope
Ups just saw that they even used the Wings for their screenshots (on CoPilot 7 website)
Hi,
I use my old Tomtom 5.2 Smartphone verision. Its fine, but not up to date. Unfortunalty my other TOmtom 6 LIcence from my old Palm Treo does not work, because S730 is not suppoerted anymore....
By the way. I checked Navigon Mobile Navigator 6. But before spending 130 Euros for it I want to test it. Does anyone has the installation program files for Smartphones, so that I can give a try?
I do not really want to spread warez, but check torrent P2P
Can use TomTom 5.20 too, but cannot connect with the integrated GPS :-(
Route 66 V7 is working with the internal GPS juhuuuu
just naturally working, or did u make some changes to the registry/teaks?
thanks

CoPilot and Route66 are known to work fine with devices that have an internal GPS, therefore no seperate external GPS is required.
TomTom however doesn't recognise the internal GPS of equipt devices yet, so they have to also have an external GPS

Not true. TomTom uses the internal GPS on the TyTN II as well as others.
Where it doesn't work is with Symbian devices such as the Nokia N95.

Have you tried with GPSID set to COM6 instead of the default COM4? IIRC, TT Mobile 5 will only connect to Bluetooth devices on COM6.

Recommended Satnav (GPS) program?

Hey, I just upgraded to the official sprint rom and hate their satellite nav program, but anyway, I wanted to know if anyone has any recommended software for use with the phone, my friend recommends Garmin XT but I can't find for sure if it even works with the Mogul. Thanks in advance.

Garmin XT works perfectly with the mogul. i have it on mines, you dont even need to use the GPS Launcher. it detects it automatically. i also have tomtom 6 navigator on mines as well. it works well too, but you have to use a gps launcher with that one.
A GPS launcher? Forgive the newbishness, but whassat?

Some GPS programs dont detect the mogul's internal Gps, so the Gps launcher, activates gps as well as the program at the same time.
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=17072
this is where i read up on it. However the Garmin XT Mobile doesnt require the launcher in order to use the mogul internal gps.

Could you comment on whether or not Garmin XT has text-to-speech for street names? During my limited experience with TomTom (on a friend's phone), I noticed that TomTom didn't have this feature (or it wasn't turned on by default). Does Garmin XT announce street names?
Thanks.
NO, it does not have this feature or none that I can see. But it does work great, I think I like tom tom for some of the other features like advanced routing and I think the maps tom tom are more accurate. For example I get a lock at my house and it says that I am at 1057 and should be 1017.
But for the most part is works great.
Here is another vote for Garmin XT...
It does not read out the street names but I have found that I don't really need stephen hawkings telling me what the name of the street is as long as it is telling me when to make the turn! LOL
The Garmin also does a better job on streets with two names which is common in rural areas...
I live on a street that is a county road AND a state highway...
In Tom Tom I had to use the county road to enter in addresses but with Garmin it would take either street name and still find it.
There are a few nav proggies that do read names out to you but I don't think any of them have the other features and huge POI database of Garmin or Tom Tom.
I have both of those installed (8GB SD Card) and I have to say I never use the Tom Tom just the Garmin!
Quick question

Hi,
Please bare with me as I am very new to this.
I got my new Mogul last week and I do have unlimited internet and text msg on my plan. Is that sufficient to get me going with GPS? Or will I be billed for using GPS on my Mogul(Sprint)? Pls let me know as I am very much interested in using GPS.
Thx in adv.

You really don't need either to use GPS unless you are going to use google maps or ms live. Then you would need internet connection.
Garmin, IGO, Tom Tom and others use the gps receiver in the phone that uses the sats in the sky without the need for monthly fees. So if you only wanted to use the phone and gps (no internet or sms) then you would not need a data plan or sms plan.

If you have unlimited Data package then you can use pretty much any GPS program you want. No extra charges at all! They don't charge for the use of the GPS and you only need the data connection if you use a program that downloads maps on the fly. (Google or MS). I personally don't like that because if I happen to get to an area where the data service isn't available you won't get a map until you get back into a data service area.
A program like Garmin and Tom Tom will also use data connections if you have them but that is only to download updated traffic data. Both Garmin and TT store the maps on the device. If you have a large SD card (like my 8GB) you can store the entire North America map with all the POI data which takes up about 2GB (a little less) of space. IF you don't have a lot of storage space you will have to download a partial map that covers the area your going to be driving in. May seem like a pain but it makes the operation a lot better to have the maps local and always available.
IF you have good storage space and unlimited Data, then your pretty much set. Make your choice based on the features of the program.
If you want to get a feel for each go to your local electronics store and try out the standalone TomTom and Garmin units. They pretty much run the same software (similar) to what you'll get on the PPC.
Google and MS are free so you can easily try them too if you want.
I personally love my Garmin. I bought the GPS10 and it works great. But don't buy the SD card versions...Get the CD which will allow you to install on the PC any SD card instead. Then you can install to any size SD card you want with plenty of room for other things as well!
Do you guys know of any problems with the install on a Titan 6800? garmin xt
ok i want this is it free or it cost money but if its free where can i download it
bpratt - Absolutely no issues installing GXT on a 6800 but it does require at least a 2GB+ memory card to store the maps and program. With GTX you don't actually install it onto the device it really installs into the memory card. When you put the memory card into the device it then adds the bits it needs to the device and runs. In fact you can use that card in any WM device that Accepts SD memory and it will install and work as long as that device has GPS capability.
Get the CD version of it though. More flexible installation options.
Authentisketch -No Garmin isn't free. At least not legally free. I got it with the Garmin Bluetooth GPS10 unit for $119 on Ebay.
i've been running google maps on mine. It has a tracking option (gps) and it's pretty good. Pretty scary actually. To be honest, not only did it find where i live easy enough, the address, BUT ALSO THE FREAKING APARTMENT UNIT! That last bit bothers me so much. I've never been a "ohhhh tin foil time" but that, how does it know what unit i live in???
google maps for mobile FTW
http://www.google.com/mobile/gmm/stp-js.html
I used Iguidance 3.0 w/ google maps today. It's a darn good combination
if you dont' have a lot of storage space. for my area, VA/DC/MD
program and maps only take up 79 megabytes on my 2 gb storage card.
this setup means i dont' have to store PIO i can look up the latest with google maps,
and copy the address over into iguidance.
The only thing is, when it reads directions, it pauses between words.
in..200..yards...turn... left I hope there is a mod to fix that...
the iguidance cab file is only like 13k.

Navcore8 for PNDs is Linux only. Your best hope is TomTom 7 if ever it is released. There were rumours of it built in ROM from a German site , with a limited Map.

i have tomtom 6 running on my diamond. Just copy the intire map to your diamond and then run the ttn.cab file. It will install itself on youre diamond. Then when it is installed go to gps settings and select OTHER NMEA GPS (or the one thats sounds like that) and then select com4. Should run like a charm.

Hi guys how do I go about setting the internal GPS to COM 4, all the methods I've tried keeps resetting when I press OK.
My Diamond would be a lot better if I had GPS working...
i have tomtom as wel.
to be honest i do not like it so much. it seems old and outdated. the letters are really small on the diamond and it takes a few minutes to get a lock.
i am waiting for route 66 v8. i had a good experience with v7 so i hope this is better than tomtom.
if tomtom would only release new versions.....
My TT - when in use, does not keep up with where I am located - it seems always to be lagging behind when i am approaching side streets . I have full signal too.

Ok, I have downloaded Google Maps on Diamond but it will ask me to have a data connection, but when i connect to WI-FI than it start downloading maps and start connecting to Satellite...
coz google map is just a download agent, no map actually installed on ur phone. it is down-as-u-go.
Tomtom works on diamond. I havn't got any iGO8 works.
igo8 works on mine
copy this file to IGO folder and it shall work. In folders section make sure that the path is pointing to IGO.
or you can actually use mapking! King of maps! ha
A new answer to this old/popular question: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=524311. With one week free download/trial, you can't loose.. Fully tested with the Diamond without any tweaking.
