No, you do not need Internet Connection. GPS connects directly to the satellite and its all free. You can use Google Maps as that has GPS options available on it. Google Google Map Windows mobile

TomTom, Garmin, Navigator...etc..
Ok, I have downloaded Google Maps on Diamond but it will ask me to have a data connection, but when i connect to WI-FI than it start downloading maps and start connecting to Satellite...
coz google map is just a download agent, no map actually installed on ur phone. it is down-as-u-go.
Tomtom works on diamond. I havn't got any iGO8 works.
igo8 works on mine
copy this file to IGO folder and it shall work. In folders section make sure that the path is pointing to IGO.
or you can actually use mapking! King of maps! ha
A new answer to this old/popular question: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=524311. With one week free download/trial, you can't loose.. Fully tested with the Diamond without any tweaking.

Hey, Just received my new HTC Diamond yesterday, and the phone looks brilliant.
Hope it performs as good as it looks.
1 small thing though.
can you use the GPS without being connected to the internet?
Also is there any Freeware GPS software.
Have contacted the local Garmin dealer, but he said that phone needs to have an SD / Mini SD card (which the phone does not have )
(and yes, only Garmin have maps for Malta)
Anyone know a way I can bypass this as I really want to use the phone's functionality to it's full, AND NO I'M NOT LOOKING FOR A WAY TO GET WAREZ GPS, I JUST WANT TO BE ABLE TO INSTALL A DECEND GPS SYSTEM TO MY PHONE, so no spanking pls
Yes you can use the GPS with a WIFI connection...as for your other questions??...sorry cant help you there.
Problem is that a Wifi connection is not always available.
Is there any way to install Garmin direct to the phone's memory??
Yes You Can Use GPS
Hi,
I have One and i am in Canada Toronto and i am using TomTom-7 and it's work nice you don't need WIFI or any internet the Diamond has GPS in the phone so all you need the GPS software like (TomTom) or any and install to your phone i install canada/USA map and it's work fine.
So you don't need WIFI or any kind of internet,
The problem is that only Garmin has maps for Malta, and Garmin Malt on has the install Via Media card, He said that They have no install direct to memory (For Malta)., he also said that if you extract the data from the card and copy via PC (and activesync cable) to internal memory data will lock.
Any opinions??
Thanks

to use gps without internet connection you need to disable aGPS (assistedGPS which diamond has and which means that diamond uses both gps and internet to lock on the position faster)
to disable it install schap's advanced config v3.0 or any similar app like pocket toolman, diamond tweak....
hi piranha, i am using garmin xt and it works fine with the internal gps chip.
you can send a mp and i tell you how to do it.
best regards
Hello Piranha,
I am exactly in the same position, I'm living in Sri Lanka and Garmin seems to be the only provider of GPS Maps here.
Did you succeed to make your GPS work?

Garmin Malta
Hi Piranha--
I am from Malta and I just bought an HTC Diamond. Can u pls tell me where did u download Garmin from and did you install in on the internal storage of the mobile?
You can download it officially from garmin web site
http://www8.garmin.com/software/GarminMobileXTforWindowsMobile_50010w.exe
There are many manuals about installing Garmin Mobile Xt on Diamond.
And for Malta, I think, that if you will buy Malta maps for Garmin, so you can use these maps in Mapsource software, which is garmin maps managing application for every garmin device. (after installing Garmin Mobile Xt on your Diamond, mapsource will communicate with Win device like with other Garmin generic devices.)
VPHK,
I had tried purchasing Maps from Garmin Malta (Medcomms Ltd),
BUT they would only supply on a card, and they would not accept me installing to internal memory, hence for my reason to get it elsewhere.

I got TT7 and I got a data plan cause TomTom is amazing. My GPS doesnt like to work. TomTom says their is no Device Detected. QuickGPS fails. The HTC GPS tool fails.....how can i troubleshoot my gps? Just a point in the right direction would help. (FWI, HD_III_OPAL WWE, 1.65.24.36)

Fails in what way? The TyTN II I have, works ok with the version of Tomtom Navigator it came with but as TTN 7 isn't officially released (yet?) as an upgrade, all I can suggest is to go back to basics, perhaps trying the setup on my TyTN II in my sig. Otherwise maybe someone who's used TTN 7 on the TyTN II can advise you. Do a search in the Kaiser software forum, there were lots of GPS related posts in there.
I got it to work, my GPS settings were incorrect. Yea and TT7 works...I just downloaded the one free map that was close by, if I need to go anywhere else I will copy the maps from my "Official SD Map Card"
*edit* quick question...is gps on kaiser free?

if your set has an inbuilt GPS reciever then it should be free irrespective of what plan you have ...except for whatever you need to shell out to buy the gps software and maps...

It depends which Kaiser and where it was bought. The HTC Original TyTN II sold here in the UK came with TTN 6.032 on CDROM in the box but just like with the version you have it only allowed free download of one 'city' map. Any additional maps had to be bought and the number that went with the map could only be used on that device.

The Kaiser's GPS receiver is integrated in the phone and doesn't need anything network-related to function (so yes, it's free in itself). It will give any program that wants it the current position, speed, heading etc of the phone.
I.e. there was no point in you "not using the GPS because you didn't have a data plan".
Then what might require a data plan or paying something is the program in question. There are 2 types of programs, those like Google maps or MS Live that are free to download and use, but DO need a data connection as they will download the map data from the net on request while navigating.
The other type like TomTom, MioMap etc do NOT need data as they store the entire maps locally on the memory card, however they are payware so you have to buy them in the first place.
I just bought a Htc 8925 and i heard that it has a gps built in the phone. but i could not figure it out how to use the gps without paying the monthly fees. So please let me know any options that i could do to make my phone work like a gps or at lease help me to get where i want to go. thank you very much
GPS Programs
Hello Shadowluan,
This is a problem I once had too, and I found that you only have to subscribe to programs like telenav or pay GPS programs like tom tom. The two standard yet excellent free gps applications I use are Windows Live Search http://livesearchmobile.com/windows_mobile.htm, and Google Maps http://www.google.com/mobile/default/maps/index.html. However, the free programs do not do everything a good pricey GPS program will do. However, you should use quick GPS under programs > tools before connecting, as it can greatly reduce the time it takes to connect to the satellites. Hope I've helped,
Dave
Download google maps for pocket pc. When it's open check off use gps.
hi, i have google maps already, but whenever i use it, it says i have to have a data connection. if i check off use gps like you said, how can i use google maps to show the direction? thank you very much
Can I use google maps or windows live search to find the direction i want without data connection or Wifi or any internet stuff. because i think htc 8925 has gps built in right? thanks
GPS Usage
Hello Shadowluan,
Windows live search can show direction once it has a satellite connection established and an active internet connection. However, as far as I know, there is no free GPS program that can show maps without an internet connection over At&t or wifi or some other internet connection. Having maps installed on the device I believe is only a feature of the pricey programs. Hope I've helped,
Dave

The HTC 8925 HAS GPS built in, all it has is a device that sends your phone its Lat/Long Coordinates. You need a piece of software that can take that information and feed it into a map.
Google Maps and Windows Live, store their maps on a server and therefore require a data connection.
Other Programs put the maps on your Device, TomTom, iGo 2008, but these cost money.
Make your choice. Buy the Nav Program or pay the Data Charge.
Hi,
I bought my Xperia 1 day ago, it's really good device. But I'm having some problems with GPS. Google maps starts to scanning for satellites for ages and never stops. I also tried the "Chartcross Gps Test" program and it finds the gps but it's always on "GPS Starting up" status.
Does anybody nows how to test it ? Or if there is something that i have to enable first? (all the configs are default - like in a hard reset)
It should work straight out the box. Try the quick GPS download in the Programs>tools folder. Downloads the locations of the satalites for the next week to the phone. Since using this, tomtom7 can find my loction in seconds (literrally)
Have you been trying it inside a building? In that case it won't work. I had the same thing with the GPS. In a building there is no connection to satelites, works perfectly though outside and from within a car.
Tomorrow I try google maps.
However I use tomtom. Befor all download effimeral with quick gps.
First of Xperia I have a Polaris. Xperia gps is much better than polaris. And polaris has a very good gps....
Tomtom7
Where did u get the Tomtom7 software for the xperia. A friend of my using his tomtom device and it works really fine! So on my X1 it would be really great if i can use it too!
I don't rememder now, but you can use Diamond tt7. It work fine.
ah thank you! but i can't find the file. could you post me the link for download pls
To test GPS use GPS Test from ChartCross. It's a great, free utility.
http://www.chartcross.co.uk/products/WM00002_details.asp
thank you! ....
Now it's working fine. I have to test it with tomtom later, but with google maps is Ok now. I followed buckle247 and Dryw Filtiarn tips. Now it finds the satellites very quick.
Just one question, google maps requires internet connection and how about TomTom?
One thing that i noticed is that the GPS sometimes doesn't "turn on", because either Chartcross or GoogleMaps can't find the GPS device, however if i turn off and turn on Xperia it finds. Is it normal?
kotarou TomTom doesn't need to run over GPRS as the maps are all stored on the Memory Card, however if you subscribe to traffic data then that will need a GPRS connection.
Also every so often I get the "No GPS Device" sometimes just leaving the phone for a minute makes it appear, other times a soft reset.
Cannot install GpsTest
Hi, I tried to install GpsTest on Windows Vista, but it doesn't work, since GpsTest installer requires ActiveSync. But Activesync refuses to install on Windows Vista, because there is another SmartPhone software.
Does anyone know another versione of GpsTest, compatible with Vista, or a version installable directly on the X1?
Thanx!

Found a fix
If your 3G data is switched off, then you won't be charged for anything. GPS won't charge you as it is tracking signals from satellites, much like a Sat Nav.
Hello guys,
I thought I had a problem with my phone, because every time I ask for navigation, it fails after connecting to the satellite. Then I found out that the mobile phone needs internet connection in addition to the GPS satellite connection in order to guide me to where I wanna go.
Actually this is a problem for me, because I don't have internet connection now with my SIM-card.
Question: Is there a way to download the maps locally to the mobile so I could be guided with no internet? I'm travelling tomorrow to Munich and I need a navigator there!!!!
Thank you for any efforts.
as far as I know google map doesn't support local storage of their maps for offline browsing and navigation, for me I use iGo
You need to buy a program like CoPilot with maps included .
jje
isn't there some free solution? I really don't wanna buy anything for now!!!
Is iGo free? I couldn't find it in the market of my android.
Please tell me something guys
Google maps is being updated in the coming days, and it will support offline maps.
