How to Test Xperia GPS? - XPERIA X1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I bought my Xperia 1 day ago, it's really good device. But I'm having some problems with GPS. Google maps starts to scanning for satellites for ages and never stops. I also tried the "Chartcross Gps Test" program and it finds the gps but it's always on "GPS Starting up" status.
Does anybody nows how to test it ? Or if there is something that i have to enable first? (all the configs are default - like in a hard reset)

It should work straight out the box. Try the quick GPS download in the Programs>tools folder. Downloads the locations of the satalites for the next week to the phone. Since using this, tomtom7 can find my loction in seconds (literrally)

Have you been trying it inside a building? In that case it won't work. I had the same thing with the GPS. In a building there is no connection to satelites, works perfectly though outside and from within a car.

Tomorrow I try google maps.
However I use tomtom. Befor all download effimeral with quick gps.
First of Xperia I have a Polaris. Xperia gps is much better than polaris. And polaris has a very good gps....

Tomtom7
Where did u get the Tomtom7 software for the xperia. A friend of my using his tomtom device and it works really fine! So on my X1 it would be really great if i can use it too!

I don't rememder now, but you can use Diamond tt7. It work fine.

ah thank you! but i can't find the file. could you post me the link for download pls

To test GPS use GPS Test from ChartCross. It's a great, free utility.
http://www.chartcross.co.uk/products/WM00002_details.asp

thank you! ....

Now it's working fine. I have to test it with tomtom later, but with google maps is Ok now. I followed buckle247 and Dryw Filtiarn tips. Now it finds the satellites very quick.
Just one question, google maps requires internet connection and how about TomTom?

One thing that i noticed is that the GPS sometimes doesn't "turn on", because either Chartcross or GoogleMaps can't find the GPS device, however if i turn off and turn on Xperia it finds. Is it normal?

kotarou TomTom doesn't need to run over GPRS as the maps are all stored on the Memory Card, however if you subscribe to traffic data then that will need a GPRS connection.
Also every so often I get the "No GPS Device" sometimes just leaving the phone for a minute makes it appear, other times a soft reset.

Cannot install GpsTest
Hi, I tried to install GpsTest on Windows Vista, but it doesn't work, since GpsTest installer requires ActiveSync. But Activesync refuses to install on Windows Vista, because there is another SmartPhone software.
Does anyone know another versione of GpsTest, compatible with Vista, or a version installable directly on the X1?
Thanx!

If your 3G data is switched off, then you won't be charged for anything. GPS won't charge you as it is tracking signals from satellites, much like a Sat Nav.

GPS not working.

Hello,
I am trying to help a friend with a Kaiser and wants his iGo working in it.
Everything seems ok, iGo starts but after some seconds it shuts down. I tried to change GPS port and everything else I could thought but problem persists. Any advice?

Did you try Tomtom before iGo? I have the same issue with google maps. It will seek sats and give up saying no gps signal. But if I run tomtom and then start gmaps it works fine (inside buildings). I would suggest you open iGO outside and check it out. Are you using COM4?
Will check... now he is travelling (Poland) but will call me when he came back.
I did not tried TOM TOM...
find a free program called GPS Test. Set it to Com 4 / 4800. Much smaller than TomTom and certainly an app that's worth keeping on it.
-Mc
the issue is that the internal GPS on the Kaiser needs to be "jump started" there a few apps that do this a free one that is also good is GPSViewer and the others mentioned above. I use TomTom well since it came with my Kaiser and with all that Damn Program memory who the hell cares if I use 10MB to install TomTom and a Map
I have never had problems with starting my GPS. I did a quick fix once and have used it with first Google maps (no problem) then Pocketstreets (again no issue) and finally Tom Tom.
I have never had to wait more than 20 seconds or so for a fix. Make sure you are outside before starting the application though.

GPS don't work

heelp... what should I do...
Couple days ago TomTom trial and Google Map found gps device nicely and everything seems to be ok. However now when I am trying to start these sw:s they both are saying that they can't find gps device. What should I do about this?
When you start the apps, does the orange light on the right of the internal speaker start flashing?
If it does, then the GPS is actually starting but not getting a fix probably.
If it doesn't then have you mucked around with your "external gps settings" which should be left set to com4 and 4800
Or try this: http://www.expansys.nl/ft.aspx?k=100176
Thx for your answers...
when I tried start tomtom it will find gps-receiver & satellites and if immediatly after that I start Google Map sw it find gps also...
It seems that this happens because of delaying to find satellites... and timelimit at GM is too short... any way solve that problem because it is stupid that I have to start every time tomtom first
which GM version are you using? maybe you should try to download the latest version. The version 1.2.0.18 seems to take a longer time before it times out.
I've downloaded version 1.2.0.18 from the webpage http://www.google.com/gmm/index.html.
what version you suggested? And if that is different, where I could get it?
Or is it possible to use some light software first lock satellites and then start GM? if this is possible what "locking sw:s" you suggest?
Its a well known problem that Google Maps times out before getting a fix on a "cold start" of the GPS.
I am guessing that if enough people let them know, they will either work out how to get it to respond quicker or to increase the time out.
I've downloaded sw called TGPS which I use locked satellites... Now it seems that this is working well...
thx anyway to all.

I had to return my phone for warranty repair but I think the latest version of GMM fixes the timeout problem. Last night I downloaded it to a friend's new ATT Tilt. The GPS took about 1.5min to get a fix and GMM didn't show any errors.
Where I can get this TPGS software???
Sorry not mentioned that before...
http://www.turboirc.com/ppc/
Thanks for the info
I downloaded the software, seems working but google maps is not working at all. What tricks have you done to make google maps work???
Zero, nada....
Just first locking gps with TGPS and then (TGPS background) I start GM... that's it.
btw. in the GM I am using automatic configuration for GPS.
If you setup everything correctly, sometimes its the location where you are at. Whenever I'm in my car, it always works. When I'm in a building, chances are, it doesn't work, even by a window.
So don't think its the phone. Test it outside first and then see if it really is the phone.
There is no need to download additional software to kickstart the Kaiser gps. Open the Camera app and switch to GPS Photo mode. Wait for a fix and then exit and start up Google Maps.
I tested the GPS outside and works fine with TOMTOM and TPGS but still google maps give me errors. When I start TPGS The software gets a signal really fast.
But when I switch to google maps I got ( Error: ConnectError [183]) and I still running TPGS in the background...
I'm using google maps version: 1.2.0.17
And another thing: This GPS photo where I can get it?? Because I think I dont have it.... my kaiser I bought it in Denmark...
Thanks for the help you people rock....
GPS Photo is enabled by a registry change -- use your favorite registry editor to set HKLM\Software\HTC\Camera\P9\Enable to the DWORD value 1. It'll then show up as a camera mode when you click the left/right arrows in the upper left corner of the camera display.
Thanks waygeek it worked....
Lets see if this google maps thing works with GPS photo
By the way I want to check out the version of google maps that you guys have??
I'm using google maps version: 1.2.0.17
Once again thank you all...
No luck with GPS photo our TGPS with Google maps.
The GPS is working perfectly
thomassster : You said that when you drive in your car Google maps works..
Do you use GPRS or 3G to connect to google maps and after that you use the GPS??? or you just use the GPS??
Because What I been experienced is if I'm outside then I use my GPRS connection then the GPS and google maps tell me Where I'm.. But If I dont use any connection and switch to the GPS, google maps die...
Thanks for the help

GPS on my Kaiser not working ??

Hello,
I bought a brand new 'HTC - Kaiser' (precisely a 'HTC - TyTN II' directly from Orange in France), in order to replace my old 'HTC - Hermes'.
First, I was surprised not to see a GPS option in the 'Communication Manager'. As you can switch ON/OFF wifi or bluetooth, you should be able to switch ON/OFF the GPS, isn't it ?
Secondly, I installed Tomtom v6.032 on my PPC, but I could not get any signal at all. I went in the options, and tried with all GPS option devices, with no success.
With 'Built-in GPS receiver' and 'Other NMEA GPS receiver' options, I always have "No valid GPS signal !". Do I have to start GPS somewhere on my PPC before starting TomTom ?
Thirdly, I looked for help on xda-developers.com here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1735972&postcount=112
I followed his recommendations, I changed:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\GPS Intermediate Driver\Drivers\GPSOnePort]
"CommPort"="COM1:" (instead of: "COM0:")
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\GPS Intermediate Driver\Multiplexer]
"DriverInterface"="COM0:" (instead of "COM4:"
And it after this I could have some signal. But then after shutting down Tomtom and reopen or after a soft reset, it does not work any more, at all ! What happens ? I don't understand.
Why my GPS just not work out of the box ?
Please help ! I switch to the Kaiser for the GPS feature, and it does not work :'(
I tried all my test outside with a clear weather, waiting for about 3 minutes each time.
it should work right out of the box.
for me (i have a tilt) gps is on com4. i use tomtom and you have to make sure the correct com port.
I could be wrong but I believe that in tomtom if you get the message "no valid GPS signal" that actually means every thing is set up correctly. you just need to wait, could take some time. tomtom starts the gps itself. watch the leds on the phone. when GPS is on the right LED will flash.
you may want to check out some other programs. tomtom does seem to take a little longer to get a fix in my opinion.
BTW check out my signature, you can use navizon and make some money once you get that gps working
There's no seperate GPS connection. The GPS just uses your data connection. If you can connect to 3G, then your GPS will also work. Try using Google Maps and clicking "Use GPS", leave your phone in one spot for a few minutes and see if you can get some sattelites that way.
As always, someome smarter can correct me if I'm wrong, but this is from my experience.
There is no way to "turn on" gps, programs access it when they need it, and it's off when they don't
Your first fix can take up to 45 minutes, although min eonly took about 5.
If you look in the extracted HTC cabs threads, you can find a program called "HTC GPS tool" Run this and select "clear memory" as the option, and that'll get a fix after a while. after that, After soft resets you should use "cold start", I think...
After this has fgot a fix you can use other programs on the COM4 channel.
Hope this helps
I have had my Tilt for about 2 months. Recently, I took a trip from L.A. to N.Y.C. As soon as I got to NYC, I ran QuickGPS, but was entirely unable to get GPS to work at all during the week I was there (queens, manhattan, roads, etc).
I posted an inquiry about backing up and hard resets. Rather than getting an answer to the question, I was given direction to make sure my GPS really didn't work.
That chain pushed me to GPS Test v1.04 by Chartcross. It is free, and can found on the web and on this forum. In NY I could not get a signal no matter what even running it.
When I landed in LA I ran it again ... it stayed at "Starting Up" for a while, but then miraculously started showing bars.
So --- I recommend that you (1) run Quick GPS, (2) install this program, and (3) let it run and run and run. Also make sure you are in an area where GPS is accessible.
It can take a very long time to get GPS to work on the tilt. Many times, it takes longer to find a signal than the trip you were hoping to TomTom through. Its the nature of the beast.

Yep, like all the others have said leave it fore longer. 3 mins isn't enough time. If after 30-45mins of being left in one place (no moving it around!) with a clear view of the sky for the first time and TomTom is still saying "No valid GPS signal" then start worrying...
Thank for your enthusiasm. I carefully read your post, here is want I discovered:
You mentionned about having a 3G data connection. First I was wondering why do you talked about that: this as nothing to do with GPS. Then I thought I should give it a try. Up to now, I haven't yet put my SIM card in my brand new 'HTC - Kaiser'. I didn't mention it in my 1st post, as I though it could not have a link with my GPS problem. I put the SIM card in the phone, then started Tomtom, I was surprised to see that a 3G data connection was automatically started, and a few seconds later, the GPS worked perfectly.
I can't believe it, I could not have the GPS working because there was no SIM card in my phone !
First I thought that the data connection was for retrieving Tomtom traffic info online, but then I discoved that even with 'HTC - GPS Tool v1.1.1.0', a 3G data connection is started prior to getting my localization.
I read about QuickGPS, and learnt that it is the thing that causes the 3G data connection to start prior to getting my localization.
Why is QuickGPS starting automatically ? Is QuickGPS compulsory for localization ? Can I stop this behavior and have everything running through GPS ?
Chris
MAYBE IF YOU TR THIS ONE
I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AND IT WORKED FOR ME
JUST ASSIGN THE INCOMING PORT TO COM4, AND OUTGOING VIRTUAL COM5

GPS and 3G have nothing to do with each other. They are too completely different things.
GPS does not need 3G to function!
Some GPS programs (like google maps), do require a internet connection to download data, thats when 3G comes in (not necessary, could use wifi and gprs instead).
What is strange is that in Orange ROM (at least in France), a GPRS connection is made automatically each time you want to use your GPS. If the GPRS connection is NOT successful, you can not use the GPS (with tomtom, or any other testing GPS tool). How can I change this behavior ? I do not have an unlimited GPRS subscription !

It's required GPRS connection because you might have selected tomtom plus services such as Traffic, Weather. Just to be sure, take out your SIM or turn off the radio to see what happen. BTW, flash a different ROM is another choice.
Did you installed Google Navigator as my Kaisers GPS unit stopped to work after i installed GN?
On Orange ROM (in France), everytime you want to get GPS, you first have to connect to the Internet. It is not link with TomTom Plus, because even with HTC GPS tool software, you need to let the phone automatically connect to the Orange network prior to getting your location with the GPS. If you do NOT have a SIM card and the possibility to connect online with your phone, you get NO GPS location.
Please, help

As NGHIEM said above, flash a new ROM and this behaviour will stop. Try Duttys or Schaps for best stability etc.
I am using an AT&T Tilt with Garmin Mobile XT and there is an option to turn off Internet Data (Traffic, weather, etc.) in Garmin. If I want to use the GPS with no radios on I have to disable the Internet Data option otherwise the program tries to make that connection first and never acquires a fix. That may be part of your problem. I also just tried the HTC GPS Tool with no SIM card in flight mode and it got a fix in under 2 minutes inside my house by a window. Garmin also started fine. The GPS is an independent receiver and should require no other data. It appears that some other program is starting along with the GPS and trying to access the Internet. Like others have said before you can probably solve your problem by flashing a new rom.
I think I have found the solution:
- In the registry change:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\SUPL AGPS]
"EnableAGPS"=0 (instead of: 1)
Now everytime I use my GPS (with HTC GPS Tool, or Tomtom), the automatic GPRS connection is not started !
Please give your feedback about this.

What is this file about ?
I've searched and searched but couldn't find it (only references to it in other ROMs). Could someone either please post the HTC GPS Tool.cab or point me in the right direction as to where I can find it?
I know it's in a couple of ROM releases, but I'm happy with what I have now and just want that file.
Thanks, guys!
EDIT: Nevermind, guys. I found it. Thanks!
No card is found
I have installed TomTom on my new Kaiser and downloaded the free citymap, but when I then run TomTom it says: No card is found. What am I doing wrong?

TD's GPS thread

Hi all,
Could you please, be kind and post you experience with TD's GPS...
Since I got my TD(4 days) I have not been able to test the GPS at all
I have loaded some soft that could help me here. ( I travel a lot between Korea and Japan). Cannot really use the phone here, but WIFI works great and I thought I would give the GPS a test run.....no luck YET..
TD's own: QuickGPS has downloaded(through WIFI) all the info and it is up to date......But how do I set up the GPS itself???
Phone did not come with preloaded GPS software so,I have loaded following soft on itnone of them would recognize the gps)
i.e. " no GPS found."
1.Google Navigator 3.4
2.GPSvp (http://gpsvp.com)
3.Effica GPS Utilities (http://www.efficasoft.com/gpsutilities/index_wm_ppc.html)
I would really like to test out the GPS here first.I am returning to EU (home) in october or november and I would like to use it there as well.
sorry for the bump
I tried the search...not just this forum but all of XDA.....I cannot seem to find one successful step-by step activation as of yet???
Nobody has internal GPS running on their TD??
Anyone?
Runs perfect and is good quality.
Make sure you let windows manage gps (in external GPS settings):
programport COM4
hardwareport none
and in last tap check the checkbox.
Programs find gps at Com4 at 19xxx baud.

Don't you have a problem with the static navigation? This behavior "drives"
me nearly crazy, because beside of that, the GPS in TD is superb...
On mine, no programs can access the GPS and the programs will lock and crash the phone when it tries to connect to GPS.
The onlt one that does not lock the phone is TomTom, but it wont connect to GPS.
I've tried combinations of the recommended port stttings, but I still get no GPS.
I have not activated A-GPS, so I don't know if the phone came with this already activated - how would I check this?
My GPS is a pain in the arse, From what i have read its because of the static navigation. So far it says i live in house number 20 when I live in house number 16 and when i'm on route I'm yet to hear a " You have arrived at your destination" because its accuracy is off about 50 metres.
Hopefully there will be a fix for this very soon.
can someone get me up to speed a bit? what is the 'static navigation' that i keep hearing about..
admittedly, i find sometimes the gps is slightly less accurate at placing my exact location compared to my old Trinity, but otherwise its worked great for me..

Hey, have you got installed TomTom 7? I'm running TT7 and when I select "internal GPS receiver" it connects perfect. I know this doesn't exist in TT6, but I can also get my GPS running in TT7 if I set it to use a BT receiver on COM4 at 57600 baud. (Assuming you didn't mess around with the standard GPS settings, like HTC meant them to be )
Google maps is using the selection of "use windows settings".

hi guys
Same problem here. AGPS is disabled. I have tried Garmin,TomTom, iGo and google. 95% of the time it can not lock onto the sats. Once in a while it will work fine. Last night it picked up the sats in my bedroom on the second story and this morning outside in clear sky it found 4 sats but with very low signal and could not give me my cordinates, gave up after 15 min.
I have tried GPS tools and even that won't lock onto the sats. Data is upto date with quick gps.
So is it the hardware problem or has it to do something with radio? It can't be faulty TD because there are a lots of people with the same problem, and why lots of other users have no problems accessing the sats?
How is your gps working?
hi
great going sofar...thanks to all. We still have no real answers.
Let's keep this one going.
Looks like GPS is an issue with TD.
( Other than GPS...I am loving this sweet phone )
Now I am trying different roms to see if it is related to that. Will let you guys know if find anything.
Strange, on all ROMS my GPS reciever just works perfect.
Almost the best piece of hardware on the device
As I mentioned in Another topic, I use the GPS for TrackMe, at the same time I am navigation via Igo, and at the same time I showoff Google Maps with GPS support.
It functions very well!
Did you get the GPS-Fix downloads? It speeds up a lot.
Yes got the gps fix downloads but still no go. Still have not lost the hope. I hope its not some hardware problem.
I was fed up messing with mine, so I did a hard reset, and its sorted ...... for now!
same as Paulus
I did a hard reset....and it works perfect. No other adjustments done.
Tried the TomTom, Tracky Pro, GPS VP, and the HTC GPS Tool....all work no problem...outside I get a fix within a minute sometimes seconds.
I think one of the quirks that the TD's GPS has is that, when it's in Acquiring Satellites mode it doesn't seem to spit out any sort of status. The first time I noticed that I thought my internal GPS wasn't working, since with my external Holux unit I can see the satellites which the Holux was trying to lock onto.
Whereas with the TD's built in GPS it just snaps from nothing to.. acquired. So it's hard to see wheter it hasn't gotten a signal because it's in a poor area of reception or not. Usually I'll just try and stay still till I can get a lock.

Gps problems

I finally upgraded to the long anticipated windows 6.1 rom for tilt. And now im having issues with my gps. I have tomtom6 and gps today for faster identifying my position. But since I upgraded, now when I turn on gps today and even tomtom it cant get my position anymore. When I checked tomtom satellite finder, it found some satellites but it never turned blue when the gps is locked. I need help to get my gps working again. Any help would be great.
I had this problem too after i upgraded to 6.1. Some people suggested to install GPS Test. It's a very simple but effective tool for acquiring a GPS fix. Whenever im not getting a fix i start this tool and normally it gets me a fix within 1 - 2 minutes. After this, as long as you dont soft reset your device, all your GPS programs should get a fix immediately.

Thanks! ill give it a try and ill update ASAP
Unfortenatly, aGPS is not activated by default. Search for the program called Advanced Cofiguration, and install that. There you can activate aGPS - and after that, you will normally get a gps link within 5-10 seconds...
i checked and gps is enabled

yeah ... only if AGPS ... works( .... I don't know what to say about this but for some kaisers and roms this is a complete mistery.
