Is there any improvements if I change a baud rate from 4800 to bigger value? I use RunGPS and TomTom6 with Diamond.
i wondered about this too, everything works fine at 4800 but does increasing it speeds up GPS data or no difference?
i think it's a software leftover from back when gps's was connected using serial cables and possibly virtual serial ports over bluetooth
The External GPS setting is for external GPS setting in case you don't want to use the internal GPS. whatever setting you change, it doesn't effect the internal GPS.
McGuider (Sygic DRIVE) autodetects the internal GPS on COM4, 19200 baud. Manually setting this in TomTom 7 also seems to work for me.

although i am not using tom tom but on beeline gps detection, it detect my gps as com4 and baud rate as 9600

COM 4, Baud 19200.
Works great for Google Maps, TOPO! and Pocket Streets.

what program? I ask because I did some testing on different programs, and while the Hermes BT baud is 9600, the internal Kaiser was faster at 19200. It may run at the lower speed, but why not use it?

OCN6 uses Com 4800 baud... On the Tilt.
My UK Tytn 2 also uses the GPS on com port 4 baud 4800, will not work with any other setting.
All my GPS programs use it, Tomtom Nav 6, Google Maps, GPS Test and GPS Tuner.

Hmmm... ok. Can't argue, but I wonder how I got it to work - and at the time I set it up it made since because being internal it should handle a faster serial baud rate than via the BT.
Anyhow, I'll try it at 4800 and see if it works there as well.
I use a Baud rate of 9600 with TOMTOM 6.032
Perhaps the Baud rate can change depending on your area (i.e which satellites you're pointing at)?
If you are using TT 6.032, then it automatically detects that you have a built-in GPS, so ignores the COM & Baud rate settings

I would like to read since my software sentence NMEA GPS of my P3600/TYTNII.
I open port COM9 rate : 9600.
But no sentences received of the GPS !!! (buffer=null)
If I test my application with other devices it is ok !!!
I think that it is necessary to send a sentence to activate the sentences NMEA of GPS (chip QUALCOMM 7200)
Have an idea? thanks

The com4 is for GPS Intermediate Driver under P3600.
The physical port is the COM9 pour a use dialogs port serial GPS.
This works on my Tilt, Com 4, 4800 baud. I believe 4800 is standard for NMEA. I'm using PUTTY for a terminal emulator. I don't send anything. I just launch PUTTY and start reading the NMEA sentences. Make sure you have a clear view of the sky - mine will not give position info if I'm in a building or otherwise blocked.
mine is COM 4 baud 52600 (judging by how iGo connects)

So I was just curious.. Im using tomtom and I havent used any speed other than 4800 for the internal gps.
Is our gps capable of operating at a higher rate than this? If so.. what are the effects? Faster movement, higher accuracy..?

When I try to change the baud rate on my pro, it always reverts to 4800 (or whatever it is)....
i dont see any deffrent when changing the baud rate
When i put it on 4800 baut it generates less heat at the back of mij diamond compared to the 57600 baut mode.
4800 Baud is sufficient for the GPS chip to exchange all the necessary information, it doesn't bottleneck route software calculations and doesn't hurt initial satellite acquisition time.
i changed to 19200 and can say that i havent noticed any difference.
if a higher baud uses more processing resources and doesnt yeild any gains then im going back to 4800.

I figure an external receiver would be fine running at a higher baud. You should try it at a lower rate and see how it performs, and if you can save battery life.
The internal windows driver which exposes the GPS functionality is baud rate agnostic - you can choose anything as it's just emulating the physical interface to the GPS (allowing mutliple things to connect to one physical receiver).
Typical NMEA baud rate is 4800 as this is fast enough for the data - you only get something like 200-300 characters out of a busy GPS giving individual satellite info per second so there's no benefit in using a higher baud rate. If you use something very fast, it may mean that the processor is ramped up to a higher speed to cope with the fast influx of data every second and the hysterisis on the power management might cause more power to be used/more heat.
I'd stick with 4800baud - there's really no need to go faster

I've a S730. I'd like to use an external GPS.
The GPS is a Holux GPSlìm. This Morning I try to use it with My S730 and it work
(I used GPSTest 1.4). But with TomTom don't work because my version need port Com2 or Com3 only.
So I've used an external tool to setup gps setting to set Program Port, Hardware Port, Hardware Port Baud Rate.
But now it no longer works even with GPSTEst.
I try to set
Program Port <-COM2
Hardware Port<- COM4
HardwarePortBaudRade<-4800
with Manage Automaticaly setted...
but it not work.
Whar are the correct settings ?
