Backup questions when upgrading/downgrading - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario Software Upgrading

I am currently using a WM6 Crossbow rom and am considering downgrading back to the original Tmobile rom. When I backup all my files now using Sprite (of course) Will I be able to upload that file in WM5 with all my settings saved and applied accordingly? Which brings me to if I backup in WM5 will I be able to apply that too WM6?

Don't restore a backup to a different major version update of ROM, or you will get some weird result.

Can this be done with PIM backup instead of Sprite? I've used PIM backup when going between major versions and it seemed to be ok.

Yes, PIM Backup is not dumping the database directly, you can always backup and restore your PIM to different OS versions using it.

Just beware about downgrading AKU because the pim.vol format changed from AKU 1.x to 2.x. So, as long as the WM5 is AKU2 then you'll be fine.

Restore Applications

im going to change the rom on my 8125, and all my apps are installed to my SD Card. If i put my SD card back in the phone after i install the new Rom, will my applications still be there or will the shortcuts be gone?
shortcuts and programs
if you did not make a backup, your programs will not run .
i mean by this that everything you installed on your device will not run.
when a back up made by using sprite back up or spb back up these programs can be restored
ok i got SPB Backup, i installed it, do i just backup my entire device? or do i have to manually go through the windows folder and stuff and select what to backup? if i backup the entire contents, then install a different ROM, and then restore the backup, wouldnt that fook everything up?

Sprite Backup is the only application that can restore everything after a ROM upgrade, you need to run an Upgrade Util on the old ROM first to capture the .sbu file which is required to restore to the new ROM
what app can i use to get the SBU file?
i have SPB Backup installed, do i just do the entire backup? wouldnt the registries affect the new rom when i restore?
warning: SPB backup can only restore to the exact ROM version you are using now. it won't restore to other ROMs...

Can you tell me where is the upgrade util? I always re-install everything, which also scares me not to make many ROM upgrades.
thanks

Backup 8125

is there i program i can download to Backup all my contacts and ect..? i want to back up all my contents cuz i wanna try a new rom.. but dont wanna loose everything if i decide to come back to my original rom..is this possible?
ActiveSync? This is how I back up all my contacts with outlook/ outlook express etc.....
ActiveSync will only backup your contacts, calendar, tasks, and the files in your "\My Documents" folder. However, to backup everything, you can use a program like Sprite Backup or SPB Backup (both are shareware). I use Sprite Backup personally and I like the way it works for me. Reguardless of the backup program though, make sure that if you are changing the AKU version of your OS that you do not restore a full backup. Read the manual and restore only upgrade backups and the like. Also, the contacts, SMS's, Call timers and such will not restore through an upgrade from AKU 1.x or 2.x to an AKU 3.x system. At least I haven't seen a way to do it yet. Well, I hope this helps a bit ^_^
Pim Backup works really well in backing up and restoring your email, sms messages, mms messages, contacts and stuff. The latest is 2.8 and it is freeware.

Restore after Rom upgrade

What is the concensus of restoring data after a rom upgrade. For example, using Faria AKU 3.3 to his current 3.3v2. Would the restore from 3.3 (backup) overwrite the tweaks created in the upgrade to 3.3v2? Resinstalling apps clean is the preferred way, just curious.

if restoring backup, and selecting the REGISTRY RESTORE, you will restore the registry where most of hacks are made... so YES if restore a full backup, you would restore the tweaks also, or overwrite the new once... but be carefull, some stuff when upgrading OS is different, so in most cases when moving to newer ROM, the update destroys the OS and you need a hard reset,.. thats why most of us do a contact, calender backup and everything else is a fresh clean install.

HowTo restore from sprite after ROM upgrade.

Before installing ROM 1.93, I made a backup using sprite, but to what level do i need to restore? (only personal data? level 1/2/3? tick restore databases?).
After my new ROM, I would like to function again:
- restore old software on my htc
- restore favorite contacts with their pics
- restore sms (text messages)
- restore email client
I also read something about PIM, it also has something to do with backing up ii understood, but i can't open the file.
Thnx in advance,
Chris
I am having problem with the same thing(almost)
I have upgraded from 1.37 to 1.93, but when i restore from sprite the boot screen still says 1.93.00.00 but in unit info it says 1.37, i figure i take backup of some system files.. All programs, email accounts, sms, contacts are intact.
Nice if someone can make a guide of what to backup in sprite and how to restore all personal settings, accounts and programs without this problem...
?
I have done this sucessfully.
First do a FULL backup.
Second set your ROM Upgrade restore preferences at Level 1 including all databases.
Third, restore in this manner and all files/apps/prefs will be preserved.
Only works if you are restoring to the same physical diamond, if not then use restore level 2.

Yeah... I did a full backup, but when i now enter the device info from the menu it says rom version 1.37, though during boot it says 1.93.. When i do a hard reset it goes back to 1.93 in the device info menu as well. Tried restoring with level one, with db and without.. everything expept the rom version seems fine though..

Restoring from Sprite after 6.1 Upgrade

I have a full backup of my 6.0 machine and can't restore it after the wonderful 6.1 upgrade. I'm on an exchange server so emails and contacts are no big deal but I would like to restore my text messages. Can I move these over individually without doing a full restore? I can move the "messaging" folder from the sprite explorer but how do I get them on the tilt? Thanks in advance.
would like to know as well!
Can't be done. Sprite Backup cannot be used to restore from ROM to ROM.
You will need to flash back to WM6, restore your Sprite backup, and then use a program called PIM Backup to archive your text messages.
After flashing WM 6.1 again, run PIM Backup again and restore your text messages.
I thought the latest versions of Sprite and SPB backup could do some ROM to ROM stuff.
Although I personally wouldn't recomment it. UC + ProvXML + my xcopyce app + ActiveSync does everything I need.

They can, but just as you said, it's not recommended. With all the unofficial builds that the ROMs here tend to be based on, it's just not wise to carry any programs over from flash to flash.
A friend of mine upgraded and used sprite (even though I told him not too), is there any way to pull JUST the contacts from the Sprite file??
You can do it. I went from WM6 to WM6.1 and used a backup I did from 6 to restore everything to 6.1.
The only tip I can give you is this.
Do not restore anything in the file system data unless its non application stuff you put there, pictures, skins, browser favourites etc.
My phone works fine I have all my old contacts, mails and pim entries from my old rom. I just re-installed my apps that were on my phone, not my storage card. Anything that runs when the phone is switched on I always install to the phone. I even restored my start menu and found that most of the games and apps I installed to the memory card run fine, they just sometimes require you to re-enter the registration details the first time you run them after restoring.
You are restoring data not programs so it should be fine.
i disabled sms threading in kaisertweak. tried to do restore using sprite again and all my sms messages show up but now i have a text message saying "account locked. company policy prohibits use of text messaging on this device. you ocannot send or recieve text messags."
also when the restore was done i got an error about sddeamon.exe
Thanks funem but when how do you specify which files to restore? When I start it makes sure I want to restore "everything." Also, I have the 10-day trial of the newest sprite but when i try and restore it says the program must be authorized to run. I emailed tech support because the trial says that it should be fully functional throughout the trial period. although its only a $10 upgrade, a free trial run just to get my text's back was all I was looking for.
When you start a restore it should take you to a tree view of the data backed up with checkboxes next to each available branch, just remove the ticks from the boxes where you dont want to restore data.
Can anyone tell me a List of things we need to install
after we have windows 6.1 on the Tilt
Like:
Adv config
Camera cab
KaiserTweak cab
do we still need all these or ........
Using Sprite Backup 1st time:
Here's another "Can anyone tell me?" question:
How long should it take Sprite Backup to run on it's first time?
I went to the program, clicked Backup, it did a reset and came up to the
Windows
Mobile
Version 6.1
screen and has been there for a long time.
How long does it take? Is it hung, or is it working?
Thanks!
EDIT:
I waited a long time, then did a soft reset and it came back and ran properly and reset.
All good, thanks anyway.
