Push email vs every 30mins...

I have 2 account with Gmail and Comcast on my Tilt. I tried to use XpressMail but I was not impressed, plus I couldn't get more than 1 account to work with it as well.
This is mainly personal use at this point so I'm not in dire need of getting my emails immediately, but I do get them throughout the day so I don't want to wait too long either.
From a battery standpoint, which option is better in your opinion? If I have both accounts check every 30 mins, will that consume more battery as opposed to using a Push method for both?
And if Push still is the way to go, what's *the* best option for getting both accounts pushed to me? I only have my desktop at home for any necessary software.

You can't push any mail that's not on Exchange, so unless you sign up for a hosted mailbox, you're limited to the time based options.
Push will consume more battery due to the always open connection, but if you shut of HSDPA until you need it (grabbing attachments, surfing) it won't be significant.

I was able to get XPressMail to do it but it was inconsistent and a hassle. Is that the only non-Exchange option?

Wha tis seven? and how does it cmopare to mail2web (free version)
can it sync with PC outlook and does it run off your home computer?

It's a push implementation. It doesn't sync to any desktop software if that's what you're looking for.

I have just ordered Blackberry to go with my XDA Stellar, to push from my AOL and various other personal email accounts, as I've got used to the push functionality on my BB Pearl and the plan also comes with unlimited web browsing.
No one else on here seems to use Blackberry Connect on the Kaiser, so I'll do a bit of a review of it, once I've had it working a few days. My biggest concern is the battery life, and if it is awful I plan on doing without. The thing is though the Pearl has pretty powerful hardware underneath it and can last the best part of a week without charging, so I'm hoping the Blackberry Connect service will be prety frugal.

I quite disagree. The whole point of DirectPush is that it does NOT consume battery power unless it's actually transferring e-mail. The method MS came up with is actually QUITE clever - and is documented on their website in a number of places, so I won't try to repeat that here.
My own experience bears out that battery consumption is proportional to e-mail quantity. On slow days the battery drops hardly at all. When I'm getting hammered with e-mails, I can see the battery dropping noticeably quicker.

Battery life in HSDPA/UMTS

To those who are using the Diamond in Asia/Europe, how many hours are you getting on a battery WITH push enabled? That is the make or break for this phone...I still can't believe such a low battery was put on this phone, completely unacceptable, with such nice features power users will use it 24/7...

i was able to get a solid 10 hours out of it with HSDPA push Exchange and IMAP gmail with using messgenger so its not that bad...

Battery Usage for Diamond
My diamond can only last for 4 hours using 3hk HSDPA.
the body of the mobile then becomes so hot.
the performance is something like my atom life using 3000mAh battery.

I think Its a better idea to stay in 2g if you use Direct Push and switch to 3g for browsing, etc..

I agree. I have 3G turned off most of the time, since I have push mail activated and the data connection is constantly open. Get more battery life that way. 3G is not required for email. Then I turn it on for web browsing, or when I'm downloading maps on the fly as I'm using GPS. This is on the Cruise but should be similar behavior on the Diamond.

[Q] Froyo meial battery drain issues

Hi all,
Hope someone can help or this can be of help to someone.
I have a UK Galaxy S 16GB on Vodafone. Came with Eclair XXJF3. I have flashed it several time to various versions of Froyo including XXJPK, XXJPO and most recently BUJP7 (as it is the official Vodafone ROM). All using Odin.
Like most I seem to have had battery drain issues, very rarely getting over 12 hours of non use.
I decided to flash one last time to a clean build of BUJP7. I first reverted back to Eclair with repartition and then to BUJP7 without repartition. OK so far. I installed OCLF and set Minifree to Strict and Scheduler to Deadline with tweaks. I also installed Battery Graph and set up my Google account.
I left it like this and noticed I was getting excellent battery life. Infact over night I was getting anything form 9 hours with NO (0%-1%) battery drain and about 7% battery drain. Which is excellent.
I then decided to setup my work Exchange email account. And BAM, thats the day the laughter died. Battery drain was back to the level other have been reporting, about 10% per hour. I have messed about with the email collection frequencysettings, using Push, Pull every hour and even set it to None, and still getting battery drain. If I remove the account completely, the battery drain poroblem vanishes.
I have also tried this with a regular POP and IMap account and it seems to have the same effect as having Exchange setup.
I apologize if this has been answered else where but there is a sea of threads about battery drain and none seem to focus on the fact that it could be email accounts that are causing it. I know that my battery stats are shot due to RFS (repeated flashing syndrome, is that illegal?) and so maybe I need to do a complete factory reset, wipe my internal SD card and see how that goes, but it just seems to coincidental that the email accounts setup and battery drain occur at the same time.
Thanks in advance to anyone who supports this thread and hope I have provided some insight into (another) cause of battery drain or at least given some food for thought.

Someone made a thread saying that if you set it to push the battery drain isnt as bad as when its set to poll every time frame.
I think that may have been my issue (the first thing i setup was email and the battery was dead after a few a hours). Also flashed back to JM1 as i couldnt work it out.
Might try it again, bit annoyed with all of this massive drain...

BTW, the thread title should be Froyo EMAIL battery drain issues. DOH! Me and my sausage fingers.
Thanks for the reply. I have tried Push and Pull email settings. And had it set to never pick up email. Seems like just having the email account set up is enough to drain the battery.

Thats bloody annoying, im not really sure what else to suggest? You could try an alternative client like K-9 Mail, I had to use that on Eclair as the Samsung client wouldnt work with my hotmail account.

Rightyho, so I had a O2U SGS with its original firmware, had a bit of an issue with the leaked Froyo that changed the product code but managed to get it back and used JM1.
So JPO came out, thought id try it out. Result: Awful battery life.
JP5 came out (the O2 UK version). Result: still awful battery life.
Thought id try JPA. Result: still awful battery life.
Done all the battery optimisations, deleted the battery stats etc.
Back on JM1 today, battery is at 89% after a 100% 4 hours ago, witch emails, gmail, facebook, and a few other syncing at 30 to 1hour intervals. This is what battery life should be.
The question is, do i give Froyo another go, or wait till another version of Froyo is released? I do like a lot of the new stuff Froyo has, but i also would like my phone to last more than 12 hours!
Suggestions?

Did you try finding out what was causing the battery drain in those froyo roms? 2-3% drain per hour is very achievable, if I just let my phone idle it would only take maybe 1% an hour. I think something else is causing the problem.

I agree with nwsk ive tried numerous froyos and they have all been good for batery life. Theres a few threads about the gallery app and battery usage.

Im pretty sure its both email and gallery, but dont understand why i am getting the issue when others arent?

Had no issues with batt life on froyo either, If it was me I'd wipe it clean and perform a fresh install, see how the battery is then, assuming you haven't already tried that. If you did then something is sucking the battery, doubt it's email or gallery as mine is syncing constantly and I get about 3% drain per hour, in the evening when I turn syncing off I'm getting about a 1-2% drain per hour. My data network is disabled though, but I have wifi on constantly

Ive done several hard resets again, even done a clean install of JM1 then upgraded straight to JPO and after everything is setup, battery just drains rapidly.
Just because you dont have the issue, doesnt mean it doesnt exist, there are several threads with others reporting the issue;

Just trying to be helpful, nobody said the issue doesn't exist. Have you tried a custom rom?

Doc custom rom is a good try,
but before hands,
mind share the following info?
1. which email client you use? (Samsung email client? SEA? etc?)
2. which email you try to retrieve (yahoo? msn? outlook exchange? etc?)
3. Do you sync other things like contact, calendar together with the setup?

1. Using default Samsung client for email.
2. Exchange and hotmail account being synced every 30mins.
3. SNS? syncs my facebook once a day, also have a few widgets like facebook and engadget doing a 1 hour sync
These are the settings i have on JM1 then choose in Froyo when i upgrade.

I suspect your Exchange give you the problem.
Froyo Samsung default mail client is a bit picky and it drain the battery at certain condition.
This is the strange issue I encounter when I'm on Froyo Samsung email client, read my update, you may suffer for the same issue.

My advise is
1. Sync only hotmail (btw Samsung Premium Social Hub offer a better integration with Hotmail, do give it a try) , do not setup exchange, let it run for a day, if there is no battery drain issue, it confirms that hotmail doesn't give u that issue
2. after No.1 setup exchange, but sync only contact and email, do not sync calendar, set it as "Push" (unless you have data plan constrain), few forummer posted that Push save better battery.
PS: There are other application like FB client for Android, Twitter, FourSquare for Android has the auto update and sync setup by default, go to respective application setting page and disable it, it helps for battery life.

Oh yes ive come across your thread and tried those options too (was using K-9 mails instead) still had pretty bad battery drain though.
I only use SNS for the pictures on my contacts, otherwise i do use the facebook app.

Are you using any live wallpapers? I had a galaxy thing on and battery drain was terrible.

Nope, never used lived wallpapers, also have the brightness set to manual and down quite low (which im sure most of you will admit is actually still pretty bright).

Does having SYNC on really use battery?

I never noticed better battery with it turned off so I am assuming its using the same "PUSH" connection that the rest of your apps would be using and not draining any more battery? I dont get many emails so I dont think I would see any drain?
