Preventing tilt from getting proxy settings on sync - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Everytime I connect Tilt to my computer for syncing, it syncs the IE proxy settings and puts them on my Tilt.
It's really annoying like hell, since after every sync I have to disable the proxy server for MediaNET.
Is there any way to prevent Tilt from getting proxy server settings from the PC?
To Overzealous Protectors of Thread Creation (OPTC) - I did a search, didn't find an answer. So sue me.

I must be stupid, cuz I can't for the life of me understand how the proxy settings can sync between your pc and Tilt.

Yep, weird huh?
I delete any proxy settings from my Tilt.
My PC has proxy setting for my work proxy server.. address, port, exclusions, all that stuff.
I connect Tilt.
It syncs.
I disconnect Tilt from PC, check my MediaNET settings - all my PC's proxy settings are in there.
That happens consistently with every ROM I tried (6.0, 6.1 doesn't matter).
If I delete proxy settings from IE - then Tilt will remain w/o a proxy.

Could this have anything to do with an Exchange Server email account your using for work?

Nope, my personal laptop doesn't have exchange set up on it and that's the laptop I sync Tilt with.
It must be somewhere in activesync/mobile device center where it syncs IE's proxy settings to device's proxy settings. How lame that is.

I have the same problem. Every time I sync to my work computer, my Tilt gets the corporate proxy settings.
This a royal pain because then my TomTom Navigator software can't get traffic updates. Then I am trying to change proxy settings WHILE I'm driving.
So if you see a car pulled over on the shoulder of the road, it might just be a Tilt user fixing his/her phone.

no you're not alone
I noticed I couldn't get data after I had synced with my office computer. After I saw the correlation I went into the connection settings and in the phone it was changed to use a proxy server, "GWS." Eventually I realized that it was grabbing my computer's pseudo-proxy server settings for the Google Web Server which my computer runs to use the Google Web Accelerator. I couldn't figure out how to stop this so I ended up uninstalling it. Luckily I don't need it unlike you who may need real proxy settings. Amazing how little quality control Microsoft does before they release a lot of their software.
I suppose judging by how few people are complaining about this proxy grabbing problem that it could be ROM-specific - I'm running Dutty's WM6.1 19588 build, latest version of Activesync.

It's not ROM specific, not unless all 5-7 ROMs that I've tried all have that problem.

My phone is still has the standard ROM that it came with. No mods what so ever.

i can confirm three things:
1. it's happening to me everytime too
2. it's a major pain in the ass!
3. it's a major pain in the ass!

This happens to me as well, however it is removing the proxy settings.... We use WPAD so the checkbox 'Automatically detect settings' is checked on the PC I sync my Kaiser with. I manually set the proxy on the Kaiser and every time I sync it with my PC it removes the setting for HTTP, it does however leave the SOCKS settings
Andy

It's not a kaiser specific problem... as it also happend to me with wm5 and wm2003se devices.
Which is a pain, but i just change the settings back after i sync

I have this problem too I have searched and searched and never found a solution to "fix" the problem. So here is what I do to reduce my effort to restore my settings after they get screwed up while sync'ing.
I have created a dummy network called office. I switch to this (settings ->Connection -> Select network) before connecting the phone to the PC. And switch it back after disconnecting them from the PC. I kept doing this for a while and admittedly this is pain to remember to do it without a miss each time. and if I did miss then you have to go and restore the proxy settings anyway. Then I found this small tool called "MObile Profiler" somewhere on freewareppc.com - it lets to create multiple profiles that store all your network settings with different names and with one keystroke restore teh settings from the stored profiles. I still have to remember to switch each time but if I do forget sometimes - I can simply restore all the settings from the saved profile in a single key stroke instead of having to go into settings and painfully typing in all the correct settings.
So not a solution to the problem but a way to save some labor in restoring the status back

Right click Activesync in task tray, Connection Settings. Change "This computer is connected to:" to WORK NETWORK. If its on Auto, or The Internet, it pulls the proxy from IE so it can get to "The Internet"!

yes but in that case, you also cannot access the internet from the phone while it is connected to the PC. One might question why you needs to have internet accessible from the phone when obvisously you are sitting next to a PC. But I need to do that - for example to have the Weather forecast and currency rates automatically updated (during activesync) in the Worldmate Pro software that I use. Or look at mail from my personal gmail account on the phone which I dont want to access from my office PC. For all that it is necessary to set the connection settings to Automatic!!!

I have an HTC polaris, same problem, using official wm6.1 updated HTC rom.
Happened on stock WM6.0 rom as well. Also happened on previous devices.
Every time I plug my phone in at work it inherits the corporate proxy settings.
Haven't found a fix for this, it's a big F'n pain in the ass though, because every time I unplug the phone I have to go in there and edit out that proxy box..every single day
What I really want to know is why more people haven't come forward saying that this is a problem...Why is it only affecting a small portion of people? I'm sure alot of peoples' work use proxy servers.

Yup, exactly. Can't believe windows mobile is designed by Microsoft yet it has problems like this...really makes you wonder just how much work went into this stupid OS. The only thing I can think of to fix this is to make a program to modify the registry on your phone every time you sync it with the PC to remove this god damn reg setting that contains the proxy server from the MediaNET connection.

I have Excalibur (HTC-S620) and Kaiser. This trick fixes problem in Excalibur, but not in Kaiser :-(.

Found solutions. Just unckeck "Allow wireless connection on device .... " and also set "This computer is connected to" to "Work Network" in Active Sync -> File -> Connection settings on your desktop.

Hello, just wondering whether anyone has made any progress in solving this problem?
When i enter my work proxy manually into the WM device, after a while it disappears again, and my WM device no longer has any internet connectivity. Then when i add it again, after a while it's gone.
Have had this problem for years on numerous devices. Seems like there are no real fixes?

losing proxy settings in Connections

Hello all.
I just got my Kaiser last week with the Official HTC ROM and I am have noticed that it's struggling to retain proxy settings for my work network.
when setting my work network connection to private network and then then My Isp to connect to the internet I set proxy settings to point to our proxy server, but once I exit from the connections settings it changes the settings to only be Socks settings, it will not retain the http settings and thus I cannot connnect to the external web, only if I leave the connections open will it retain those settings it seems.
I also find that it seems to be a bit flaky in that combined scenario, it doesnt switch properly between work network and ISP as it is supposed to. Is anyone else seeing this behaviour, is there any reg tweaks that can solve this problem?
A couple of my colleagues have the HTC Touch and they seem to have similar problems.
Cheers
LBN
Am I the only one to experience this issue, is the issue covered somewhere else anyone?
No, you're not the only one to experience this. That just happened to me also. My phone was working fine for the last week and a half and then all of the sudden I couldn't get weather panel to update over GPRS and when I checked my connection settings the HTTP proxy had disappeared. I put it back in and it hasn't disappeared again as of yet though.
Well, I figured out what's causing the problem, but not sure how to fix it. Activesync seems to be disabling the HTTP proxy whenever you're connected and try to connect to the net.
I tried to contact HTC Technical support too to get some more information on this, but surprise surprise they haven't gotten back to me except with a canned reply of being in contact soon. I just to own an ETEN M600 and Eten was horrific in customer support, guess HTC is not far off that
I still haven't figured out why it's doing this, hopefully HTC will shed some light on the problem though. I'm not sure how you have yours set up, but the way I have mine set up is that I have 2 connections set up, 1 with the proxy and one without and switch between the 2 when I need one or the other, that way I don't have to re-enter the proxy each time. There seems to be another problem connected to this that I'm not sure if you've noticed or not and that is if it removes the proxy like it's been doing it also disables any other connections you have set up, meaning that if I accidentally leave it on the proxy connection and WM removes the proxy and then I switch back to the other connection without the proxy it won't work until I reset the phone.
So any response from HTC yet LBN?
losing proxy settings
try to control the settings on the internet explorer of your desktop, on my phone activesync sincronize the proxy settings of IE to the mobile network settings.
Bye
Manux
The HTC crowd are a <censored swearwords>, not one word despite contacting them twice, very annoying....
I'm guessing that what ManuX said is probably what it's doing, although I haven't tried it yet to see for sure. The thing is to try and figure out how to stop it from doing that. I never use IE on my computer, but there are apps that I have that do so adding the proxy to IE is pretty much out of the question since all my compter apps would stop working then.
The same is happening with me. I add the proxy settings and re-enter the "Connection" panel, and poof! No more proxy. The SOCKS is kept but the HTTP is gone. Even when I remove the SOCKS, it comes back!
I've got the same problem with my Kaiser...Moreover when directpush is active, PDA make a soft reset and a lot of people have this problem. Have you solutions?
Excuse me for the bad English but I'm french.
Sitting in the same boot, but no idea either on how to solve this problem
anyone have any updates on this?
Same problem!!!!!
I have the same issue also. Is there a third party application that could be used?
I've seen similar, but slightly different behavior. Everytime I connect to activesync (via bluetooth or usb) the 'proxy' setting was being set. This caused an issue for my 3G connections and I had to clear the incorrect proxy setting after each activesync connect.
I tracked this down to the 'proxy' setting in internet explorer 7. If a proxy is set in ie7 (tools->internet options->connections->LAN Settings) the value is pushed to the device. As soon as I cleared the setting in ie7, the problem stopped occuring.
ive just updated to windows 6.1 and still the same problem
[SOLUTION]
The problem of losing the proxy settings after connecting to ActiveSync can be resolved as follow:
Connect your PPC to ActiveSync and let it snychronize.
After synching open the connection settings on your device and re-enter all your proxy settings.
If ActiveSync wants to synchronize after that again, just let it continue.
After the last sync you can disconnect your PPC from the cable
You should now be able to connect to ActiveSync without setting loss
I found the solution some time ago, but forgot to post it.
Anyway it works fine for me and should for all of you, too.
Cheers!
I dont lose proxy setting when connecting to active sync. I lose them when open interent exploror.

Kaiser not accessing net through my pc

AFAIK the kaiser should use my home net connection when synched with my PC right?
I remember when I was setting up / installing that I ticked some kind of box to not use hosts net conn when attached via USB (God knows why I did, I knew it was a bad idea after i hit OK...) but I don't remember where I set it.
I have looked around and can't seem to find any setting like that - any ideas?
if i'm not mistaken, that's a setting you need to change when you DON'T have your device connected to your pc.

Hmm, that reg entry didn't seem to do it. I still can't access the net on my mobile through my pc.
its a setting in activesync/Mobile Device center, you will know it when you see it
In activesync go to file-->connection settings...--> and uncheck the allow wireless connection on device when connected to the desktop and your phone should stop using gprs instead of activesync to connect to the net when your connected.
hmm I still can't get a Internet connection through my computer! Does someone else still have the same problem?

Same problem here. I have the latests ActiveSync....I have "The Internet" selected as what my PC connect to in ActiveSync. I have un-checked "Allow Wireless Connection" - and still nothing. The phone won't sync with my Exchange server when connected to my PC....very annoying because the phone lags behind my 'real' schedule as a result!
Anyone?

Go check your router and/or firewall settings....
Your Kaiser should have it's own IP adres cause syncing is a network-based affair these days, so this might cause the problem in your network setup...
Check Settings/USB to PC ; change the Enable advanced network functionality, and try again. Happend to me in Vista, and after messing with this setting Windows Update downloaded latest driver for HTC and fixed the problem. (As i remember you can change it back afterwards, if it solves your problem).
thanks for all the help so far guys.
It definately seems to be an issue with activesync (ie the desktop PC) because when I connect to my PC here at work, it is all fine.

Thanks darkilici...!! I un-checked "advanced network functionality" under Seettings, Connections, USB-to-PC, and when I plugged my TyTn II back into my PC - it "found" the device again, re-loaded the driver, and now I am accessing the Internet on my TyTn II through my PC! Thanks......HUGE!
Much appreciated.
Unchecking it caused my phone to be able to use wireless while synched - thanks!
But if I tick it again, it goes back to how it was.
The error I am getting is:
"The page you are looking for cannot be found due to error 0x80072f78"
Even with it unticked, it's not really what I want. I want it to use my much faster broadband connection while tethered...
I think I may do a hard reset.
I forgot to ask, by any chance are you on T-Mobile (or any network that requires a proxy to access the net over GPRS)? If you are, then you have to disable the proxy server to be able to access the net over activesync.
Yes, I am on T-Mobile with Web n Walk.
Do you mean the one in "Connections"?
I removed that proxy tickbox and it seems to work now. Do I not need the proxy? What is it for? Cacheing? Or is it only to enforce the "No adult content sites" block? (Which I have removed so I can access facebook)
Thanks ever so much!
I'm on t-mobile in the US and I have to have the proxy to access the net over GPRS or it won't work at all. I'm not sure about if you need the proxy in the UK or not, but the easiest way to find out is to try to access the net over GPRS without the proxy and see if it works or not. If it doesn't the it would probably be easier for you to set up a second connection, the first with the proxy the way you already have it set up and then a second that has the same settings as the first only without the proxy settings. Then, just switch between the 2 when needed. Unfortunately that's the simplest way to do it that I have found.
Hmm, I'm actually looking for something like this, but not. Anyone know of a way to make it use AT&T's internet while connected to a computer with ActiveSync? That registry tweak works great for when I'm at home, but when I'm at work or something, I may want to use my phone's internet (GPRS/EDGE/3G/HSDPA). I have a program that lets me control my kaiser from a computer (MyMobiler), but it needs activesync. If I have Activesync, I have to use my work internet (which I don't want to do). Hopefully that makes sense.. Any ideas?

BlackBerry Connect w/ Kaiser

Hello all. I have successfully installed BB Connect 4.0.84 on my Kaiser and it is up and running...both my BES and BIS accounts. Fairly smooth.
Question - whenever I suff the Internet or update my RSS feeds with Insight, it kicks the BB Connect "off" (disconnects) and uses MediaNet. Then I have to go in and "force" BB Connect back on. A bit of a PITA. I have an unlimited BES plan from AT&T...do I need to set the Connection types to be something else now for these other programs that need to access the Internet?
Any help you could provide with you greatly appreciated.
Thanks!,
Adam
yes go into the connection settings. then go to advanced and select networks and set both to My Isp or which ever one your BES\BIS connects to.
There is a new one now (not just MediaNet) tha is called "My Blackberry" but when I select that one none of the other Apps connect to the internet. Once when I select MediaNet do they connect. They actualyl disconnect the BBerry, connect themselves, and then a bit later the BBerry appears to re-connect on its own....so this may work out to be ok.
Thanks - much appreciated.
welp sorry to say bud thats how that is going to work then... BES must use its own network settings and the MediaNet for internet uses another sorry your stuck unless entering in the settings for wap.cingular by hand and not using MediaNet work for BBC
I too have BB Connect installed on my Kaiser. I am able to get emails successfully over Blackberry and gmail. However, I cannot use Internet explorer over MediaNet. GoogleMaps, the weather plugin, QuickGPS, etc can all get the data they need when connected through MediaNET but IE will not load any webpages.
Any thoughts on how to fix this? There are no options to config connections within IE and the connection within settings seems to be correct (how else would the other applications be able to use MediaNET?).
Note:
I can launch BIS for internet explorer and use the Blackberry connection instead of MediaNET. Obviously though this is not optimal as BIS has lmited sites, low res pictures, etc.
This is not really in the right forum. THere are a couple of BBC threads in the other Kaiser forum that address your question directly. Go there and search for blackberry. You'll find them.
issue kaiser w/ bbconnect
Hello,
I have a kaiser and the bbconnect installed on it but when I want to activate it, all my today plugins disappear and I can't find them in the today setup anymore.
Does anyone have an idea?
I'm in France but I don't think the issue comes from that.
I need it for my job and at the moment i'm totally held so please help me if you can.
Thanks in advance

Tilt not sync'ing on 3G at all

First I don't post much usually because I can find the answer by searching, however I have not seen this one.
My kaiser will not sync to OWA when on the ATT network at all. It will sync fine from any wifi spot (be it at work or home), but it will not sync at all if I am on edge or 3g. I am using the HTC shipped rom on the ATT tilt.
If it were a active sync settings problem then why would it work over wifi, I though the mechinism was the same either way. I don't think it is a internet settings problem either since I can browse just fine.
Couple of closing thougths.
1. I have hard reset (twice) with no luck.
2. I have set up several other WM5 and WM6 on our network with no problem, all using the same corporate ATT account..
3. I have tried it with Direct Push on and off.
4. Please don't post "mine works fine" without any advice, it just clogs up the thread for no reason.
Here are my connection settings.
Internet
Access Point: wap.cingular
User: [email protected]
Pass: Whaterver HTC put in
Domain: blank
Thanks for the help, I am really baffled here.
Is your proxy server enabled? If you have the default Tilt ROM there should be two icons in the Programs | Tools | Proxy Manager folder to enable/disable the proxy. I find that having it enabled messes with OWA and the like. The only time I enable it is when I want to go to http://home for AT&T specific stuff.
.:Christian:.
I don't have a proxy set that I can tell (I am using the HTC rom not the ATT so I don't see a Tools folder under Programs). Couple other odd things. When connecting to the data for the first time, it says connecting to MediaNet. I don't have a connection setup called MediaNet the one I setup is called My ISP.
When it syn'cs it finds that there are changes (say 0/2 emails), then it gets them (2/2), it then immediately stops and never processes them. It returns a code 0x80830003 which says something is not setup right on exchange, but it is setup fine as there are 10 other WM phones that work fine.
Ok thanks for pointing me in the right direction, it was the proxy settings, but it was on the MediaNet connection. I somehow had 2 connections setup. I could not delete the MyISP one (that is the one the HTC wizard setup) so . I deleted the MediaNet connection, and renamed the My ISP one to MediaNet , then disabled proxy on the it. All is well. Thanks again!!!
Excellent!

Can you access the internet when connected via ActiveSync?

With my trusty old Ipaq 5550 i could, but for some reason i cant with my Kaiser.
I had a look in the manual but couldnt find this.
Any tips?
It should work automatically.
Perhaps in your comm manager, active sync is greyed out and needs to be enabled.
Or perhaps in your configuration screen: connections tab, usb on pc (or sometinglike that), you can (un)check a box about advanced network connectivity.
yes for me work You must change in Connections->Advanced->Select network first field where you have your ISP to My Work Network.

Thanks, been wanting to do this for ages.
Now I have got it working.
Okay, this is a long message but I have had a unique problem in which I had to fiddle with activesync and my PDA for several days to figure it out. So in case this is your problem look here.
Scenario:
At my work we have a proxy server. When i connect my phone to my computer, even though activesync and my PDA are set to connect properly neither my phone nor my computers internet works. I fooled with this, posted on the forums and finally found a way to fix it.
Steps:
1)Change your PDA's advanced network settings in the network management area to BOTH be "mywork network". Do this before plugging in to activesync.
2)load an internet page with streaming content, or constantly refresh a web page if your work blocks all sites!
3)Ensure that your activesync is set to connect to the "work network".
4)Plug in your phone (be sure that data is still streaming on your desktop, if an active connection isn't streaming on your desktop Windows uses logarithms to decide which connection to use as an internet source).
5)Let activesync load and syncronize. Once it is syncronized, go back to your pda's network management page and change the two options BACK to MEdia Net or whatever data service you use on your cell phone. NOTE: Be sure that media is streaming all the way until you change your PDA's options BACK to the proper internet source for your phone and test it by loading a web page. Once the phone is set as it's own internet source and the desktop still has it's active LAN connection you should be golden.
I know you shouldn't have to do this but at least with my works network and their proxy server if i don't do it this way i will NEVER be able to use the internet on either device.
The reason for this is because of Microsoft's crappy network capabilities. In activesync 4.0 + they made activesync use an actual network connection, you can view it via the network connection page. So with some networks (not all) it tries to use your phones connection as the active internet network and vice versa at times.
Hope this helps somebody out there as this drove me nuts!
So far i'm the only person that has had the problem (on this forum, at least that has responded to my threads). But i'm sure there are a couple other people that have annoying problems with their work and activesync.
Thanks,
Luke
Thanks a lot alaiwy, worked just fine for me!
For the AT&T Tilt & AT&T ROM's you also need to disable the Proxy.
