I recently switched to a Mac and was wondering if anyone knew the alternative to Microsoft ActiveSync on Mac OS X. I did a brief search and came up with information about Microsoft Entourage [which I do have on my Mac] and was just wondering if anyone has experience with this? If I plug my Tilt right into my Mac, will Entourage pick it up or what?
Thanks in advance, Walt.
For Mac OS X, you need a (non-free) software called Missing Sync.
Or you can use Parallels to run Windows XP and ActiveSync from within Mac OS.

I have an iMac running Leopard and I run Missing Sync. Works great for me. Syncs Address Book, iCal , iPhoto , Tasks, Phone Log, even iTunes (non DRM ) music.
I also have my Tilt sync'd to the Windows XP side of my Mac because the one thing you cannot do through Missing Sync is flash new roms or radios. That can only be done through Windows. But I use Bootcamp , I used to use Parallels but their support for their product is non existent.
I needed help with a setting and emailed them and Nova Development no less than 15 times, never even an acknowledgement. Bootcamp is free runs smoother and has better graphics compatibility.
You will need a Windows machine for updates.
syncmate
syncmate is free and works great for me. Im running leopard on a powerbook.

On my MacBook Pro, Missing Sync.
One note on uploading ROM's. I was able at one time to do it using Parallels but recently one of Dutty's ROMs locked my Tilt in the Tri color screen. It wasn't the ROM, something had change either in a new version of Parallels or OSX. Moving over to an old Toshiba fixed the phone. I've since tested it again and it still fails on Parallels. Just a word to the wise.

Same thing happened with me under parallels. I can still flash radio firmware and splashes using Parallels, but when flashing the entire rom, its like the connection gets interrupted or timed out. I was previously able to do it before so Im positive its either a parallels or OSX issue when it updated.
Dual boot and use WinDoZe to handle the rom flashing, but honestly Missing sync works great for the contacts / address book info / ect.
=D
I tried to reply to your post maybe 3 different times last night through opera on my device but failed...
anyway i'm on the same boat. Have misssing sync but dont use it much.. my main mode of connectivity is on windows running through vmware's fusion... no problems what so ever with flashing roms.. i used to use parallel's but tried out fusion and liked it a lot better! highly recommend it.

Hello,
since a couple of days I try to upgrade my Trinity with a new Rom, but I have no chance. I get this message Erros 260:Connection , so do somebody know how I can flash my Rom under Vista? It would be very nice, thanks a lot!
turn off usb-connection in windows mobile device center, and try again!
if it doesn't work, try "des bootloader", start it and try to flash again.
perhaps you need activesync 4 drivers for your device, i found them somewhere in this board
good luck
thanks a lot, where can I find the active sync drivers, I searched but I found nothing, anybody an idea?

Vista in my eyes is almost perfect - never had any issue!
- using three external hard drives without any problem
- syncing with my Wizard (of course WMDC doesn't "store" contacts, it just syncs them with an Exchange server or Outlook - and it does it even better than ActiveSync)
- and all other stuff I did previously with XP (except ROM upgrading of my Wizard - but that's not a problem of Vista as there are already upgrade tools, we just don't have them so far cause no operator released any upgrade recently or the gurus here haven't been able to hack it to accept custom ROMs)

Actually there are no "tweaks" to make it do what is is supposed to do - it did it straight away! I have no idea where you have problems - WMDC has exactly the same functionality (and some additions to AS) and same options, just different interface. Just go to "mobile device settings" or whatever it is called (I am using the German version) and set it up to sync whatever you want to sync...
If it doesn't work try to delete the partnership and set up a new one...
My friend got a tilt after he saw my awesome pimped up tilt in my hand... problem is.. he only have a mac (that sucks), and he have no way of syncing his data with his Mac
Now anyone with any experience hooking up wm6 to sync with a Mac for calenders and contacts and notes and file installation and stuff? I heard SyncMate, and it's free, anyone who uses mac using it? is it any good? Any other suggestions for syncing between mac and wm6 devices?
Thanks for your input.

Search for "The Missing Sync"
I haven't tried it with my Kaiser yet, but SyncMate worked okay with my Hermes.
The downside of SyncMate is that it needs to install its own USB driver (since it doesn't use ActiveSync), and that driver conflicts with WM5torage - mind you, since WM5torage is hit/miss on the Kaiser anyway, it might not be that big of a deal.
It worked for data synchronization, but accessing the device as a file system is "experimental".

he should be happy, MAC is way better, but that's now offtopic
I just messed around with SyncMate, which works perfectly for me. I hear much less complaints on SyncMate compared to The Missing Sync.
Syncing notes: You'd have to get the expert edition for $39,95. It syncs with Stickies as far as I know, haven't tried it yet (cheap Dutch guy )
Installing files: you can mount the complete device on your mac, and transfer .cab files over to the phone.
In short: SyncMate by Eltima software

Hi there. Few days ago I changed my OS from XP to Vista. From that time I couldnt sync my Diamond. I have got SP1 and all updates. I wanted install Windows Mobile Device Center Update but when the instalattion was nearly at 99% it reversed at uninstall without any message. I havent any Windows Mobile Device Center icon between programs but I have this icon in Control Panel. I can connect my Diamond to laptop, I can transfer files for example but there is no tasks or contacts sync. Can anybody help me? I treid many thinks I found on the Internet but still no solution. I checked the Firewall as well and the related applications are allowed. I even tried to switch off the firewall but didnt help me.
So I found the solution by myself. Maybe it wil be useful for somebody. Before installing Windows Mobile Device Center Update you should do at least the following:
- update graphic driver at the newest one,
- update all Microsoft Windows Mobile Remore Adapter related things.
Important: the mobile must be conneected to the computer during searching for updates and installing them as well.
My computer is ASUS eeePC 1000H. Now it works like charm.
I have only one thing to say about Vista:
Its an amazing OS I love Vista.

I didn't see issues with Leopard on Shift. Yes, I tried it out. The only issues I found were losing touch and syncing the system with Windows Mobile. Also I didn't like Leopard on smaller screen. I did this just to check that out, so got reverted back to Vista. I am eagerly waiting for RTM of Windows 7. BTW, I don't have issues with Vista. At home I have 3 computers that run on Vista (2 on Ultimate and 1 Business), 5 Computers that run Windows XP (various versions), one with Ubuntu, and 1 MacBook running on Leopard (10.5.6). I have issues with XP based systems when I installed BizTalk 2009 and SQL Server 2008, but I never faced any trouble installing them on Vista Ultimate. I don't have issues with VS2010 beta 1 installation on both XP and Vista. My primary home system runs on Vista Ultimate has variety of server softwares installed in addition to Visual Studio 2008 and 2010 and Eclipse Ganymede with Android SDK that I need. I also use it as my Live Mesh host.

Saiweb, Can You Expound?
You said that you got OS X working on the Shift; can you explain your method briefly? Were there really no problems other than losing touchscreen? How often did it go out? I'd appreciate it.
My friend putrawanz did installed mac leopard osx into his shift just to try it out sometime back , but he said it is very slow in responding , even when u pass the pointer through the dock , the icons that expanded and then contracted back to origin size was somewhat lagging / jerking in motion , so it can be installed but can't be used . unless we used the 2gb ram stick coming out dunno when , then maybe it can be a lot smoother

Which distro did you use to install OS X? I had issues with the GMA950 graphic card. The installation started in black and white (640x480) and I never got past the spinning wheel to start the installation...
It must work
I would think that it should run pretty well. I've seen the YouTube videos of it running on a Shift very choppy, but I've also seen a YouTube video of an u810 (which component-wise is pretty similar to the Shift), triple booting, one load of which was OS X. It looked like it ran fine; he didn't demonstrate everything though. I think when people first tried installing OS X on the Shift, it didn't support GMA 950, but then Apple released a MacMini that used the same chipset. That, or it just really depends on the method and .kexts.

It definitely was not remote desktop. He demonstrated booting each one, OS X, Windows, and ubuntu. Each time having to select the partition to boot from in what looked like chameleon or grub. I have my Dell Mini 9 triple booting and it has GMA950 the same way. Works flawlessly.

She knows. She knew. Basically, there is no video that shows OS X running on the Shift, just a video of someone using remote login to access a computer running OS X. There is, however a video of someone running OS X on a u810, which is pretty similar to the Shift. I'm thinking he used the same method as was used in the MyDellMini forums.

Have a ball with it people,
Hello i am new to posting on this site but a long time reader and i have a Xda mini S (wizard).
anyway
i have been looking around the internet because of a crazy idea in my mind.
The idea came to me yesterday after upgrading my rom to WM6.1 then to WM6.5
So am looking at WM6.5 and just am thinking wouldnt it be nice to have Windows Xp on my phone so can be like a portable laptop with calling and texting.
i saw some thing about it for a different pda i think
so was just wondering is it possible to upgrade the rom and install XP on a Xda Mini s.
Doesnt have to be like the Desktop version it can be a mini remake.
as long as its possible to flash it again afterwards if i change my mind about it.
Anyone have any ideas for me ?
An easy way to fix this is via citrix, or via vmware...
well you must be a retard to think xp run on wizard is no such thing runnning xp on a pda close thread please...

Maybe you should think outside the box a little before emphatically saying something isn't possible. Heck, 60 years ago noone thought it possible to carry around a phone withoutwires, or have a computer smaller than the size of a room.

Well, it is impossible to run Windows XP natively, because the architecture of the wizard(or any htc smartphone) differs from the pc architecture.
However, there are 2 ways to "run" xp on your wizard:
1) With an x86 emulator like bochs or qemu; you don't want that because it's even slow on a normal pc, and you still don't have sufficient RAM to run xp.
2) Run xp on a normal pc and use VNC or RDP to control it remotely(so you need a fast internet connection). I believe there an rdp app called "Terminal Services client" on a default wm installation, so I'd go for that one.
If you want to run windows to play games on your pda, I'd advice to forget it, vnc and rdp are not designed for such tasks...
Well, I dig this idea. any one with the know how should be able to port Tablet PC OS into an .nbf file with all the right drivers an stripped of all unnecessary junk ( a minimalist version) . If not a complete os than lookalike may be. May be i am dreaming big but someone should be able to help. I see ppl trying to port Linux/ android on wizard than why not XP?
The Omap processor (which is an ARM processor) isn't powerful enough to Emulate a x86 processor with acceptable speeds and memory to run XP on a wizard (even if XP has been stripped etc..).
Thread closed.
