ATT Tilt wifi strength - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Hi everyone
My tilt has very poor signal when using the wifi. Is this normal? At best I get 30-40% signal strength. Ive tried several routers (home, work, Starbucks) and its always very low to no existent. Even when 1-2 feet away from the router the signal doesnt improve. People in the ATT forum had mixed opinions. One person said its normal, others said they have no signal problems. Ive tried moving to high performance (power mode) but no change.
Any ideas. Could my device have a bad wifi chip?
Thanks

It's not your Tilt, it's all our Tilts that do this. The Titl doesn't have a dedicated wifi chip so it's not as strong as that of a laptop's. The only thing you can really do is slide the slider in start>settings>connections>wireless>power mode from best battery to best performance.

ridiculous
wonder if this has anything to do with ATT wanting ppl to pay an arm and a leg for their overpriced ota internet. does kaiser suffer from this too?
I was trying to connect to my friends router today and i had his iphone on my stomach. his phone got 4 bars...mine didnt even find the damn router. bull****.

my Tilt catches wifi all the time, i sometimes pick it up while driving past coffee shops if i leave it on. also my router is on the second story and i get 3 out of 4 bars when this computer i'm typing on has 4/5. I don't think it would be AT&T
also at bets battery it does drop to 2 bars.

The 8125, 8525, and now the Tilt, all had poor wifi reception for me. I don't have a solution, but rest assure it's a universal problem..... if you want to call it a "problem".

My kaiser also suffered from this problem; eventually I tried ROMeos 3.5 and the latest radio et voila, the receptoin is marvellous. I can get a connection up to three times as far from the router as ever before.
Maybe you have to try different radios and see what's best for you..
Just my 5 cents

Have you put the slider to best performance rather than best battery?
Yes i did
never had the problem with the tytn and wizard.
I only get that on my TyTN II when I'm far away from the router and the signal strength is low. If you've already set the performance vs battery life slider to give maximum performance as suggested by kareem9nba and it's still behaving as reported, what happens when you're near to the router?
If it's just that your saying the range isn't as good as youve been used to with other devices, I have nothing to compare my TyTN II with as this is my first WiFi capable ppc - but I'm sure other more experienced members here will be able to comment. If you're near to the router where there's no doubt it should be working fine and still getting problems then thats a different matter.
maybe your router needs a restart or maybe its just faulty.
have you tried other devices with same router?
try a wifi sniffer/scanner see what happens (a good example would be PeekPocket)

I do! My Kaiser's performance is on a par with my old HTC Universal, which is to say, they are both terrible at getting a signal. I don't think my Kaiser is faulty as back in the Universal forums, it was often commented how useless the WiFi was in comparison to other machines. I used to have a HP Ipaq 5450 which could get a signal upto approx 20m from my router, my laptop starts struggling at around 50m. The Universal could just about get a signal upto 4m away, the Kaiser is no better.
I realise much of this is due router location and the fact that I was trying to get WiFi in my garage, but in my bedroom with a full signal on the laptop, the HTC devices struggle to get more than 1 bar and if I move 10cm further away from the router the signal goes completely.
I think the WiFi on the Universal and the Kaiser just isn't that powerful. I guess it's Maximum Performance setting is still quite low power in order to save battery life. Wonder if there is a registry tweek to increase the power to the WiFi card, and if doing that would blow the card?!

I'm using an 11 Mbps Wifi capable router (about 2003 vintage) and even with a wall and a floor between my TyTN II and the router it still works about 15 m away, I've yet to try any further as that'd be outside the house. I was impressed to see it even detected other WiFi sources in the area though. I found that even though the signal quality bar was fluctuating, my web browsing still worked OK. Bumping the slider towards the performance end did make a difference to the signal quality indicator (although it still fluctuated). If your TyTN II is only working up to 4 m from your router then I think there's a fault with either device, you should be getting better than that.
I can connect to my linksys WRT54G when beside the it and 20mt away. Even when beside it the TynII will cycle off (disconnect) and then reconnect again. I thought it was signal strength but I am beginning to think its just a crappy wifi setup on the tyn. I also have my slider on best performance.

Funny that, so am I! However I bought it because it was cheap and I really didn't know much about WiFi etc several years ago when I bought it. I notice many routers come with external antenna's, mine is all internal so I would think that it's more my router isn't that powerful, combined with the Kaiser having a less powerful WiFi set-up that older models. To be fair, the Ipaq had an external antenna (of sorts, a little lump on top) and my previous laptops didn't have built in WiFi, their external WiFi adaptors also had external antenna's.
Frankly I think that all this internalisation of components is having a negative impact on signal strength and range. To compare I have a GSM car kit with an external antenna that picks up a much better signal than a phone on it's own. Likewise my GPS can be connected to an external antenna and I've noticed when connected it will pick up more satalites, with a stronger lock, than when on it's built in antenna. It also picks up more than the Kaiser (internal antenna) or Universal (external bluetooth GPS with internal antenna) ever do.
Still, it all just about works for my needs, so I'm going to leave well alone!

But does this actually affect your browsing? In the end the signal quality bar can do whatever it wants as long as the data still gets through as far as I'm concerned and for me that’s happening. My hunch is that the reason why the signal quality bar intermittently dips down (even when nearby a router) is associated with power management on the TyTN II (which will still be in place to a certain degree even when the performance vs. battery life slider is fully at the performance end).

really i can't connect to my wifi router, while other hardware can (a laptop for example). it loops from "connecting" to "available" with 5 bars. but nevers connect or never shows an error. i tried open, WEP, WPA, WPA2 with no results... its a compatibility problem of TYTN II with some routers....
i hope that upgrading firmware, this problem dissapear....
Hi
My experience isn't that the signal itself is particlarly poor, but that it can be prone to loose connection regularly if its very weak. Atm I'm sitting some 150m from the accesspoint (quite powerfull transmitter), through a couple of concrete walls and its fast, as in almost so fast as the Kaiser can chew. Livestreaming from Youtube is np etc. The signal is no doubt very poor tho, and I have to use max signal/minimum battery on that bar you can adjust.
What drives me nuts is that it DCs me and often force me to key in the network key randomly every 1 to 20mins or so. I don't know if this is due to weak signal (both my laptop and the kaiser have 1 bar) or config of the wlan/kaiser. The PC dont DC, but its deffo a cranky connection. It almost seems like theres some auto-DC feature somewhere.
On other networks I haven't seen this. Generally I find the Kaiser wlan surprisingly powerfull, albeit it often shows a weak signal I've found this to be very relative and far from always descriptive of real life performance.

kaiser wifi low signal - wi fi poor reception - wifi disconnecting and reconnecting:
Suffered a lot with my kaiser wifi poor reception. Tested several radio versions and could solve the problem.
Radio version:
1 71 09 01 - too low WIFI reception
1.27.12.11 - disconnecting and turning OFF the WIFI with no automatic reengage of the access point or turning ON the WIFI if coverage is good.
1.65.17.56 is the versione that SOLVED my problem.
This radio was collected from the original HTC shipped rom:
RUU_Kaiser_HTC_WWE_3.28.405.0_radio_sign_25.83.40.02_1.65.17.56_Ship.exe
In this moment I am running Radio 1.65.17.56 with
ROM jjblaster3 - updated 28014 with good WIFI behaviour.
I need to underline that the reception I have now with the Kaiser, can never reach the sensibility of my Nokia 5530 WIFI or the one I have on my laptop with good antenna embeded in my LCD framem but I am happy now because the WIFI is making sense now.
Best Regards

I'm facing the same problem. WiFi worked fine and one day it was suddenly gone. Tried quite a few radios, including 1.65.17.56 and still no deal.
To elaborate, when WiFi is turned on, the icon never even comes up in the taskbar, and it continues to remain in an off state (when checked in wifi settings) even when it's turned on (in the comm manager).
I'm guessing this could be a hardware problem like a loose contact to the antenna? Anyone heard of such issues?
(On a side note, the phone function never worked either, I always got a "No Service")
I've fixed it! I believe the problem was indeed a loose antenna. I opened up my phone and removed the antenna peice (the plastic plate that also houses the speaker) and pushed up the two pins left of the camera (so that they'll have better contact with the antenna piece. Put everything back and now the WiFi works!
Now if only I can figure out why the cellular doesn't work..

Is there something wrong with my Tilt's Wifi?

i dont know exactly what wifi should be like on a Tilt, because to me, the signal has always sucked big time. From stock, to shipped rom, to plenty of cooked roms, and lots of radios.
Example: I have a wrt54gl. very good router. i go out on my balcony to smoke, and its approx 20 feet away from my router. Nokia N95 in left hand says 95% signal strength. Tilt in right hand says, nothing. my router is not found.
Is there maybe something wrong with the wifi on mine? or is it just a joke on the tilt?
Works fine here, where my laptop has a very weak signal the Kaiser won't see it, but not worse than that.
yeah kaisers seem to be hit and miss on the wifi, some of us have very poor signal's and perfomance.
I've tried multiple roms, hard spl's, radio's, loads of wifi settings, routers, wep or wpa security, unlcoked networks, nothings works.
Some people have no problems and great signals.
My htc hermes had a brilliant signal could be on wifi in the garden or any room in the house, now in the room next to the router the kasier gets a 1 bar signal, and will drop the connection sometimes.
I believe some of them are just faulty, i've heard of a few people retuning them and the replacement being perfect, so sounds like a bad batch but it seems to effect t-mobile mda's and at&t tilts at least, not sure anbout htc's, oranges, xda's etc.
Yes, The Kaiser has an under powered WiFi chip and a weak internal antenna.
To top it off almost all ROMs have the setting to "Best Battery." There is a WiFi setting of "Best Performance" that helps the strengths but sucks up battery like a Dyson Vaccum.
Go to your Comm Manager -> Settings -> Wireless LAN. Power Mode (tab). There you can play with the Slider. See if that helps.

Are you happy with WIFI reception?

Today I try register TD2 on my university's WIFI system.
The authentication of this system IEEE 802.1x so I need to type ID and password for log-in.
When I used P3600 (trinity,wm5), Registry was okay and I can use in its coverage well.
However TD2 has trouble, when I loged in the wireless system, it suddenly disconnected during type ID or Password. (I solved it by ID copy & Paste) Also, I feel it does not catch WIFI signal well.
After then, I try test two device in my home.
My home has BT Broadband hub1 and I compared Signal Quality graph.
At the weakest aerial area, I cannot see any graph on TD2 but P3600 shows short green graph. By the way, TD2 catch the signal earlier than P3600.
Ok... This situation might be understand but when I put two mobiles in front of Hub (Wireless modem), I found slightly strange result.
The graph of P3600 is full-filled as expected but the graph of TD2 isn't. I think the graph of TD2 is reached almost 80%.
I wish it should be covered by Rom update but if this situation suffered just my device, I concern MY 2nd TD2 has problem. (Of course, I believe I over-worried)
How do you feel the WIFI reception of your Touch Diamond 2?
(P.S.) Sorry, my English is not fluent.
I received my D2 today and have been playing with it by having it connected to my home wifi network. The reception seems fine but occasionally I do see it resync. Suppose it could be better but it hasn't failed on me, so I'm happy neither the less.
EDIT: I had further play with wifi and yes I agree the reception is poor
I'm not saying this is an answer but have you played with the wifi strength slider? The one that is for better wifi or better battery. It's still there under the bonnet.

The condition of test was same condition as possible.
Strength Slider is same 'Best for Battery' and P3600 graph is better than Touch Diamond2.

Yeah gave that a go little to no difference mate.
I've got my TD2 since 5 days, and while I am very please with it overall, I agree the wifi reception is poor...
The signal strength is much lower and I loose connection much faster than a laptop...which is probably normal, but reception is also poorer compared to my "old" acer n311 PDA, which is about 2-3 year old...
Reception seems to improve when antenna is not covered by your hand, but unfortunately, as the antena is at the bottom of the TD2, near the mini-USB connector, your hand is almost always over it when you hold the device in one hand....
I have also observed the "never-perfect reception" phenomenon, I can go 1m from my wifi router and be at 80% signal strength only...I would have maxed out signal quality of my laptop much much earlier than that of course...
I hope it will get better, maybe with a radio update, but I fear this is purely hardware driven, so I will just to have to live with it. Too bad, as I typically use my phone/PDA in "wardriving/warwalking" situation, trying to pick the occasional free wifi to download emails and browse during hollidays. I usually have a laptop in situation where I have a secured wifi acces with clean signal...and at home/work, nothing beat a wired gigabit workstation LOL...
Personally, I haven't had any issues with WIFI on my TD2. I have the wifi battery slider set in the middle and I connect first time, everytime to the router at home and at work.

Wifi range

I don't seem to get a very good wifi range on my hd7. The hd7 gets 1 bar where other devices in the same position relative to the router get 2 or3 bars, anyone else find this or is mine a faulty device?
im sorry i just found this but i have the same problem! i cant be more than 1 wall away from my router or my hd7 won't find my wifi! i hope this isnt a hardware issue:/
As for Me the Hd 7 has had the best connectivity for wifi for me .. totally pleased, might be somthing to do with the routers.. I have bad connectivity with my Hero but brilliant with the HD 7
WiFi issues
I have issues connecting to WiFi even in the same room as router is, on open networks in coffe shops and hotels.
It's very weird, I get the message that the password is incorrect, or the network unreachable.
I actually dont recall that have one case of successed WiFi connection, I think this is very strange!
Any advices how to improve phone's sensibility, where is Antenna placed?
thanks in advance,
silversurfer03
I have been having the same problem. I noticed turning off my data connection completely actually helped some. It seem like the HD7 will try to connect through whatever connection is strongest.
can anyone test different Radios, see which one get better wifi reception.
I tested mine just next to my laptop, while my laptop reach last 2 bars, my HD7 disconnected sometimes.
Wifi reception.
I get pretty good WiFi reception I had to find a specific channel in a congested area i.e. my house but that was router side. I use my phone on WiFi at my house upstairs through a few walls with little issue. It gets the same level if reception as my iPad. Not really a great example there. While alot can effect WiFi reception you guys may have a legit hardware issue.
Same issue here. My HD2 could connect to my router anywhere in my house - however I move to another room now and the HD7 has real problems as the signal is showing as weak! I know it's not weak as my netbook and old HD2 still have no problems at all.. let's hope a radio update will sort it pout.
same issue here
I also encounter big problems with wifi.
At my place I can connect with my laptop and any previous phone I owned to my wifi from my bedroom, but not with my HTC HD7. When I'm in the same room I have nog issues at all.
At my parents place my phone doesn't like the wifi, I am not able to connect to the wifi even in the same room. Other phones are not having issues with the wifi.
Same issue on my EVO, i only have a 20 ft range on my wifi now. Not sure what happened but it really bums me out not being able to fix it.
I am also having this same problem with my EVO. Started not long ago and I have no idea why or how to fix it. no wifi really sucks
I have the exact same problem ever since I bought my HTC HD7S.
WiFi range is horrible regardless of the OS I'm on.
I just updated it to 7.8 and it is exactly the same.
I sent it in to HTC and they said they'd charge me 160 USD to fix it, the phone only cost 99 USD no contract, no fees, but carrier locked of course so it's not worth it.
I did drop it on the floor in Oakland, would any of you with this issue have done the same?
Would that be why my WiFi is so horrible?
What could I do to fix this, replace the WiFi chip inside the phone?

WiFi Signal Strength Poor

I've owned my Nexus One for over a year and I've never had any issues with connecting and using WiFi until recently. This is especially important for me, because unlike most people I don't have a data plan and exclusively use WiFi.
My phone is running stock Gingerbread 2.3.3, GRI40. After the update I didn't experience any issues with the WiFi or anything else with my phone. This past weekend however, my phone has had issues staying connected to WiFi and is having extremely poor signal strength. I went out of town and was using WiFi at a hotel with no issues and left my phone on over night. The next day I was using my phone regularly and then when I went to turn the screen on I discovered the phone was off. It appeared that it had crashed and turned off, I'm still not sure if this is related to my WiFi issue. When I went back to the same hotel I was unable to detect any of the wireless networks I had been using previously while others were able to.
When I got home I was able to connect to my wireless network, but the signal strength was extremely poor and it dropped the connection often and it continues to be so today. I've been directly next to the router and the signal strength barely increased. Before signal strength was strong throughout the entire house and my dad's Droid Incredible continues to have strong signal strength in the house. Therefore it isn't an issue with the router, but the phone itself.
So I'm not sure if it is a hardware or software issue, since I didn't experience problems initially with Gingerbread and hardware doesn't usually stop working like that. I'm contemplating doing a factory data reset to see if that resolves the issue.
I'm not sure if I should contact Google or HTC for support, especially since I believe the warranty was for one year and I'm now past that. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Also, here are some posts on Google's forums with other people having WiFi issues: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google Mobile/thread?tid=00279551366307eb&hl=en
Ah I wondered if it was just me, I previously had no problem getting wifi signal in my bedroom.
Since Gingerbread I only have a single bar (just the sphere of the icon is green). Sometimes it'll just drop straight to 3g :-(
im having the same problem
I'm also consider low wifi signal.
Same problem here to.
Not that I'm glad to hear other people are having issues, I'm glad I'm not the only one.
I just got really fed up with it today and decided to do a factory reset. Unfortunately it was a huge waste of my time and didn't improve anything at all. I can't even use WiFi unless I'm 10 feet away from the router and even then the connection is slow and drops out constantly. I have never been so disappointed in Google.
I'm considering trying out CyanogenMod.

I always wanted this mobile, but didn't have the money to spend. So for a month ago, I could buy it in Denmark for 2000 dk / 400 $ so I don't know if it always have been a problem. I got it with 2.3.3

I have the same problem on my Atrix, signal is weak and drops every now and then.
Read on the Motorola forum that turning the cell phone settings of - ie Airplane mode on, resolves this....sort of. So sounds like you have a choice of using wifi or getting phone calls.
So far very disappointed, and not encouraged by the other post here either.
Did you ever think that maybe its time for a new wifi router?
