I've owned my Nexus One for over a year and I've never had any issues with connecting and using WiFi until recently. This is especially important for me, because unlike most people I don't have a data plan and exclusively use WiFi.
My phone is running stock Gingerbread 2.3.3, GRI40. After the update I didn't experience any issues with the WiFi or anything else with my phone. This past weekend however, my phone has had issues staying connected to WiFi and is having extremely poor signal strength. I went out of town and was using WiFi at a hotel with no issues and left my phone on over night. The next day I was using my phone regularly and then when I went to turn the screen on I discovered the phone was off. It appeared that it had crashed and turned off, I'm still not sure if this is related to my WiFi issue. When I went back to the same hotel I was unable to detect any of the wireless networks I had been using previously while others were able to.
When I got home I was able to connect to my wireless network, but the signal strength was extremely poor and it dropped the connection often and it continues to be so today. I've been directly next to the router and the signal strength barely increased. Before signal strength was strong throughout the entire house and my dad's Droid Incredible continues to have strong signal strength in the house. Therefore it isn't an issue with the router, but the phone itself.
So I'm not sure if it is a hardware or software issue, since I didn't experience problems initially with Gingerbread and hardware doesn't usually stop working like that. I'm contemplating doing a factory data reset to see if that resolves the issue.
I'm not sure if I should contact Google or HTC for support, especially since I believe the warranty was for one year and I'm now past that. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Also, here are some posts on Google's forums with other people having WiFi issues: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google Mobile/thread?tid=00279551366307eb&hl=en
Ah I wondered if it was just me, I previously had no problem getting wifi signal in my bedroom.
Since Gingerbread I only have a single bar (just the sphere of the icon is green). Sometimes it'll just drop straight to 3g :-(
im having the same problem
I'm also consider low wifi signal.
Same problem here to.
Not that I'm glad to hear other people are having issues, I'm glad I'm not the only one.
I just got really fed up with it today and decided to do a factory reset. Unfortunately it was a huge waste of my time and didn't improve anything at all. I can't even use WiFi unless I'm 10 feet away from the router and even then the connection is slow and drops out constantly. I have never been so disappointed in Google.
I'm considering trying out CyanogenMod.

You should, the only issue with CM is the call wonk, and now it's almost worked out. I've never wonked myself.

I just got the N1 and is still happy whit it, but I hope Google will fix this problem. As I can see, there is many people out there, that has the same problem as us.
I always wanted this mobile, but didn't have the money to spend. So for a month ago, I could buy it in Denmark for 2000 dk / 400 $ so I don't know if it always have been a problem. I got it with 2.3.3
Hope this text is readable. My English is not my strong side.

Intermittent signal drop on my Atrix
I have the same problem on my Atrix, signal is weak and drops every now and then.
Read on the Motorola forum that turning the cell phone settings of - ie Airplane mode on, resolves this....sort of. So sounds like you have a choice of using wifi or getting phone calls.
So far very disappointed, and not encouraged by the other post here either.
Did you ever think that maybe its time for a new wifi router?

Hi everyone
My tilt has very poor signal when using the wifi. Is this normal? At best I get 30-40% signal strength. Ive tried several routers (home, work, Starbucks) and its always very low to no existent. Even when 1-2 feet away from the router the signal doesnt improve. People in the ATT forum had mixed opinions. One person said its normal, others said they have no signal problems. Ive tried moving to high performance (power mode) but no change.
Any ideas. Could my device have a bad wifi chip?
Thanks
It's not your Tilt, it's all our Tilts that do this. The Titl doesn't have a dedicated wifi chip so it's not as strong as that of a laptop's. The only thing you can really do is slide the slider in start>settings>connections>wireless>power mode from best battery to best performance.
ridiculous
wonder if this has anything to do with ATT wanting ppl to pay an arm and a leg for their overpriced ota internet. does kaiser suffer from this too?
I was trying to connect to my friends router today and i had his iphone on my stomach. his phone got 4 bars...mine didnt even find the damn router. bull****.
my Tilt catches wifi all the time, i sometimes pick it up while driving past coffee shops if i leave it on. also my router is on the second story and i get 3 out of 4 bars when this computer i'm typing on has 4/5. I don't think it would be AT&T
also at bets battery it does drop to 2 bars.
The 8125, 8525, and now the Tilt, all had poor wifi reception for me. I don't have a solution, but rest assure it's a universal problem..... if you want to call it a "problem".
My kaiser also suffered from this problem; eventually I tried ROMeos 3.5 and the latest radio et voila, the receptoin is marvellous. I can get a connection up to three times as far from the router as ever before.
Maybe you have to try different radios and see what's best for you..
Just my 5 cents
I don't seem to get a very good wifi range on my hd7. The hd7 gets 1 bar where other devices in the same position relative to the router get 2 or3 bars, anyone else find this or is mine a faulty device?
im sorry i just found this but i have the same problem! i cant be more than 1 wall away from my router or my hd7 won't find my wifi! i hope this isnt a hardware issue:/
As for Me the Hd 7 has had the best connectivity for wifi for me .. totally pleased, might be somthing to do with the routers.. I have bad connectivity with my Hero but brilliant with the HD 7
WiFi issues
I have issues connecting to WiFi even in the same room as router is, on open networks in coffe shops and hotels.
It's very weird, I get the message that the password is incorrect, or the network unreachable.
I actually dont recall that have one case of successed WiFi connection, I think this is very strange!
Any advices how to improve phone's sensibility, where is Antenna placed?
thanks in advance,
silversurfer03
I have been having the same problem. I noticed turning off my data connection completely actually helped some. It seem like the HD7 will try to connect through whatever connection is strongest.
can anyone test different Radios, see which one get better wifi reception.
I tested mine just next to my laptop, while my laptop reach last 2 bars, my HD7 disconnected sometimes.
Wifi reception.
I get pretty good WiFi reception I had to find a specific channel in a congested area i.e. my house but that was router side. I use my phone on WiFi at my house upstairs through a few walls with little issue. It gets the same level if reception as my iPad. Not really a great example there. While alot can effect WiFi reception you guys may have a legit hardware issue.
Same issue here. My HD2 could connect to my router anywhere in my house - however I move to another room now and the HD7 has real problems as the signal is showing as weak! I know it's not weak as my netbook and old HD2 still have no problems at all.. let's hope a radio update will sort it pout.
same issue here
I also encounter big problems with wifi.
At my place I can connect with my laptop and any previous phone I owned to my wifi from my bedroom, but not with my HTC HD7. When I'm in the same room I have nog issues at all.
At my parents place my phone doesn't like the wifi, I am not able to connect to the wifi even in the same room. Other phones are not having issues with the wifi.
Same issue on my EVO, i only have a 20 ft range on my wifi now. Not sure what happened but it really bums me out not being able to fix it.
I am also having this same problem with my EVO. Started not long ago and I have no idea why or how to fix it. no wifi really sucks
I have the exact same problem ever since I bought my HTC HD7S.
WiFi range is horrible regardless of the OS I'm on.
I just updated it to 7.8 and it is exactly the same.
I sent it in to HTC and they said they'd charge me 160 USD to fix it, the phone only cost 99 USD no contract, no fees, but carrier locked of course so it's not worth it.
I did drop it on the floor in Oakland, would any of you with this issue have done the same?
Would that be why my WiFi is so horrible?
What could I do to fix this, replace the WiFi chip inside the phone?
So I have noticed this problem since the 4.3 upgrades have been out and it continues through the 4.4.2.
I have this problem at home on WiFi, when I am at home I have terrible cell coverage usually bouncing between no coverage and one bar. It seems that when I am bouncing between no cell coverage and one bar my WiFi drops and immediately reconnects.
I had originally thought that my access point was the culprit as I hadn't noticed it happening when I dropped in and out of cell coverage. So I replaced my WiFi system as the one I was on was 8-10 years old. So upgraded to new hardware (WiFi) and tried both 2.4g and 5g and problem persisted.
I have used stock roms, and others, currently on ViperOne 5.8. I have updated to the most current firmware along the way, I even flashed a full RUU and started over last weekend. In addition I have this issue on all three devices in the house (all HTC One M7's).
So today I tried something I should have thought of sooner. I put the phone in airplane mode and then turned on WiFi and noticed that the problem went away, consistent WiFi, no WiFi drop, bounce, etc.
So anyone have an idea as to why this would happen and how I can solve it or is it something that is not solvable except by HTC/Google?
Thanks all.

I think this is an HTC bug. I've seen many users here complain of this on the Sprint model. I have the same issue as well. I have mine set so I can see if I am on 4G or 3G even while I am connected to WiFi. I notice this bug happens exclusively (and nearly every time) when the phone goes from 4G -> 3G.
I had a similar issue but when i updated radios it went away

I don't have 4G in my area so that isn't a factor for me but I can see potentially this happening between 2G and 3G and I am usually roaming here so that would make sense.
Thx.

Most of the people I've seen with this problem had it start with the latest radio or the one before it. The latest radio definitely does not fix it here.
This also happens to me at home while connected to my WiFi , really annoying ,or sometimes if I'm at work .no WiFi connection ,it'll show I have 3g but won't let me load pages.

I had that problem as well, I even called Sprint, and they sent me an Airave which is on it's way now. Yet, the tower near my house (6 miles away) was fixed-ish today and it stops that whole reconnect and disconnect garbage. Plus, I get lte in about 80% of my house. This wifi mess was going on since December and I put my phone on roaming most of the time to make it a little more stable.
Just reporting back. I reverted to the previous radio this morning and my connection seemed to stay on. Not sure if I'm trippin or if it really is working better .gomna test it out some more and flash the newest radio and check if there's a difference.

At work, we have 2 WIFI networks. ????-WIFI and ????-Guest
I have NEVER connected to -Guest, and nobody here even knows what the password is. It's never used.
Randomly, my phone will disconnect from -WIFI and attempt to connect to -Guest, and it fails authentication every time.
I need to go into network settings and forget the network.
Nobody else has this issue.
This has happened on multiple roms, radios, etc.
Majority of the office runs Android. I'm the only one with a Nexus 6.
It's especially aggravating since I use Tasker to control my phones volume when connected to -WIFI
It's an IT company so we're not unfamiliar with technology. We're all out of ideas!
Anyone able to shed some light on this?
How many access points do you have in the office? Unplug each one, one by one, and see if one of them is broadcasting that signal. How close are you to other buildings or offices similar to yours? Could be receiving signal from near by.
There might be some apps in the play store that will give you signal strength readings so you can try and narrow it down to see the general directions of where it's coming from.
I've ran into that same issue at the company I work with and it does get annoying when you have multiple WiFi networks on your WAPs. This issue occurred more frequently when we had sonicpoints managing our WiFi. But when we switched to Ubiquiti WAPs, I still had the issue, but it was less frequent than a everyday thing. I've been looking online to see what can cause this problem because a lot of the people who work for the company I work with have iPhones and they never have this problem. Unfortunately I'm not entirely sure what could be causing this problem and I'm not sure if it's a issue specific to Lollipop, but hopefully this issue does get solved because it's frustrating and I definitely feel your pain on this...

Only one access point, broadcasting 2 SSIDs. It's an Aruba. We are near other offices, but rarely see other networks. Signal is too weak to see them consistently with my phone.
Quick note, both of the SSID's are WPA2, with different keys.
It's our network that this is happening on, just can't figure out WHY it's happening. Doesn't make any sense. I've never even attempted to connect to it.
May be irrelevant but turn off always scan for networks.
I did a full wipe on my phone today, go into WIFI settings, and -Guest had "Saved" under it.
Fresh wipe! Maybe 2 hours on the install. Google Connectivity Services is not installed.
Hi, is this the spot to ask about problems with the stock tablet? If not, I'm sorry. If, so please help!
So, I got a tab s2 for christmas. So far I'm loving it, except it will not stay connected to 5g wireless for long! Sometimes it will kick me out every half hour or so of continuous usage, other times it will kick me every 5 minutes. The connectivity problem seemed at first like I just had to adjust something with my network except that any other device that uses the 5g signal does not have that problem! ALSO, sometimes when it hangs it completely freezes the tablet and I have to do a hard reboot (power and vol down buttons) to make it usable again.
At one point I was in the wifi settings page and saw the wifi toggle go grey. It NEVER reconnected after 3 or 4 reboots! Is there something wrong with this particular tablet or is this some sort software issue?
My router is a netgear r6250 fwiw.
Try changing channels on the router, you may have interference on the channels it's using
You can use InSSider to check for channel congestion.

I have been using Netgear Wifi Analytics to figure out my wifi dropping. I have no trouble with signal in the house...None of my other wifi devices are having trouble! As a matter of fact, just a little while ago, while testing the wifi on the tablet, the signal dropped. I pressed the home button then the whole tablet froze again. Instead of hard rebooting it, I decided to leave it alone to try to get it to unfreeze on its own. It did after about a minute...BUT the area near the volume and power buttons are was pretty warm/hot. The battery also lost nearly 8% in that time as well!
Does this particular one I have just simply have a bad wifi switch/modem/antenna?
I have the same issue. SM-T810 keeps dropping wifi connection to my netgear r7000. Both 2g and 5g. None of my other devices have the issue. Seems to occur a lot with chrome or anything else that saturates the wifi link.
I'd suggest getting the tablet replaced. I've disabled the 2.4GHz mode on two of my routers (ASUS AC66U and ASUS TM-AC1900) and my Tab S2 never had any troubles with 5GHz on these routers.
Anyway, no matter what obscure configuration your router might have, it shouldn't cause the whole device to freeze. Unless Samsung seriously screwed something up, even if the wifi driver crashed (in the worst case), the worst that would happen is that Android won't let you turn on the wifi.
I replaced mine yesterday and the new one is just fine!
I called the Samsung help line, described the symptoms and they said it sounded like a hardware fault rather than a software issue - took my reference number back to place of purchase and swapped it over for a new one. The new one has had zero issues, has not disconnected from wireless once or frozen and even just general browsing seems smoother - the first one definitely had some issue with the wifi bit.
This without even rebooting the R7000 router between the last bout of freezing and disconnections with the old tablet this morning and then starting to download all my apps and settings and wireless sync of 2 gig of data for the new tablet without a single hiccup two hours later. So the router or signal are not the issue.
