Hi,
I am off to India for 2 weeks, with my trusty Tytn. What is the cheapest and best way to get good gprs coverage with a fair daily allowance on PAYG? Or am I being a bit too hopeful.
Thanks in advance.....
GPRS in India
Hi there,
I just came across your querry,
sorry for the late reply but I rarely go off-topic,I have Exec.
For GPRS there are several service providers , the fastest & the cheapest is Airtel.
For Rs.12 per day only you get the Mobile Office service , in which you have full access or for Rs. 5 per day you get the NET ON PHONE in which ther is a limited access.

Thank you very much.
airtel gives the best speeds possible today with Edge support i do up 2 20 k download speeds ... and its unlimited
I am getting unlimited GPRS for 250 INR from Airtel. Speeds arent much but they claim EDGE services.
I think GSM and GPRS rates are one of the lowest in India.

Unlimited for 250?
I've been paying Rs. 140.00 / week, ever since I got here 3 months ago... and I managed to get a post paid connection since I'm gonna be in India for another 4 months. Speeds arent great though.
Anyways what about this 250 Unlimited?
Just got back
Hi All,
Thanks for your help with GPRS. It was a little more tricky than I thought it would be. You can't get a PAYG Sim if you don't live in India, you also need 2 passport photos. When you get the sim you have to get gprs activated, then send an SMS to 696 with MO in the body to start mobile office. After this 19 rps are taken everyday until you cancel it, but you do get unlimited internet.
It was also tricky to get the GPRS network settings as I couldn't manage to contact them using the phone. In the end I phoned someone in UK with internet access for the settings for Airtel. The main one being airtelgprs.com as the access point name.
Anyway the coverage was great and recommend it to anyone roaming it India.
I am paying Re. 1 for 100 KB to Airtel... which is very costly.
the gprs and call rates in India are way below.
Anyway my package rate is 16 RS per MB and i use about 400-500 Rs Gprs daily. (PAK)
Hi, whats the best 3g pay and go sim in the UK I can get for internet access to use with a sim free diamond? I'm looking for something with a good deal on the internet usage.
Whats everyone else using?
I used to have vodafone because it was £1 a day for 20MB, probably the best deal you'll get. There are no bundles for monthly usage of the internet on any network.
3 do a internet package for £5 p/m.
Mike.
Actually...
T-Mobile also do 1 pound a day, and have a larger 'fair use' limit. 2GB if i remember corectly.
Three do monthly bundles (on prepay) eg 10 pounds a month for 1GB

Thanks guys, I might go and look in the 3 shop in town later then, I just ordered an orange payg 3g usim, I guess as no one has mentioned them here, that orange are useless at 3g payg?
I would of thought all the networks do this 1 pound a day option by now.
Pay as you go bolt on for O2 Unlimited usage on O2 Active or i-mode® subject to fair use £7.50 per month

Hi,
I heard bad stories about 02 and payg 3g.
Orange do some internet deal with pay montly sims, £8 a month, but as I read the offer its only 1mb? Thats all they do from what I can see.
http://shop.orange.co.uk/shop/yourplan/additionalservices
3uk has been £5/month for nearly a year now, youll get better speeds with t-mobile though
This month I decided to upgrade from the $30 5gb value plan to the $70 unlimited 4g plan in order to save on my home internet by tethering via wifi for my home network. I've had tmobile since february and I always go over the 5gb limit rather quickly and end up spending almost as much as the unlimited 4g plan per month because I have to top up early or suffer painfully waiting for a page to load with their god-awful 2g speeds.
Well, it seems tmobile isn't happy about how much data I've used since upgrading (close to 50gb in 3 weeks), and my internet speeds have PLUMMETED to the point where I'm lucky if I get 10kbps download speeds. Hmmm....that seems eerily similar to the speeds I would get when throttled down to 2g speed prior to upgrading my service plan.
In the past weeks I've been re-routed to a tmo page that says I'm either over my limit or not authorized to tether a couple of times, but I was able to bypass this by simply resetting my wifi access point, or at worst rebooting my phone. Well, now it seems they're tired of me outsmarting them, so they just throttled me. BTW, my phone shows I'm able to connect to h, h+, and 4g.
Having said that, here's why I'm so upset about all of this: Last night I called tmo customer service, and a rep told me there is an outage in my area, and it's expected to be resolved in a week (hmmm....my month ends in a week....coincidence???) So I called up my buddy and had him bring his nexus 4 over to my house so we could see if it really was an outage. Guess what??? He was able to connect to h, h+, and 4g, and when he ran a speedtest he got the results we both expected....normal h, h+ and 4g speeds....NOT 10kbps like I've been getting.
So, my summation: Tmobile is lying to their customers who use too much data, telling them that there is an outage in order to keep them on a leash. I don't remember signing/agreeing to anything that says "I will agree to pay for unlimited 4g data, as long as I limit my monthly data usage"
Anyone else experience this issue, or am I the only one?
Lets see if I got this straight..
you were tethering
They told you, you were not authorized to tether. Probably because you were over your 500mb allowance.
You tethered anyways, raking in 50gb of data used.
and you complain they are throttling you?
So you break their policy and complain they do something about it?
Move along here....nothing to see.

I can't wait for the "but unlimited means unlimited!" crap to come.
You paid for unlimited mobile data usage, without tethering. What made you think you could then turn around and use this as your home internet service provider?

Who told me I wasn't authorized??? A random webpage I was re-routed to, not any service agreement I signed.
also, if you acually read my post you would see that I didn't complain I'm throttled. I'm pissed they lied and said it's an outage, rather than just coming clean and saying "you tethered too much"
You did something bad...they did something bad. You both are even. Why get mad over something you're not supposed to be doing?

I did nothing wrong. I didn't agree to not tether, and my phone (sold officially by tmo with the same firmware and capabilities) comes with the option to tether. If they don't want me doing it, it should 1. clearly state in the agreement this is prohibited. 2. stop selling phones with the ability to tether out of the box.

This logic is flawed due to the fact that phones come with the option of using mobile data, you still need to pay for the option to utilize it.
"But my phone came with the functionality to make phone calls, why should I have to pay to do so?"
Whether they lied or not, it's right on their site that the limit of tethering is 500MB on the $70 plan and you abused it. Be lucky they didn't terminate you.

Whether you knowingly accepted it or not you did. When you purchased the $70 unlimited you agreed to only 500mb of tether data. It says it on your paper work, I know cause I just looked. It says it online. Whether you noticed that or not is a different questions. As far as lying to you, oh well. You were going behind their back and doing something you weren't supposed to do. As someone said before, you are lucky they didn't just terminate you.
What does this have to do with Nexus 4, apart from the fact it was used to tether?

Also, afaik, nexus devices are the only ones I know of that come with the ability to tether built into the firmware. All other devices (again, afaik) may have the option in settings, but you have to pay for the plan to actually enable it.
As said already, you are only allotted 500mb of tethering with that plan. You went over, they throttled you.
As far as the CSR that lied to you, I'm sure they didn't know what was going on, so they just said there's an outage because they weren't sure what else to say. Getting mad at T-Mo because one CSR didn't know what they were talking about (none, from any company, do) is like getting mad at Red Lobster because a waiter recited the wrong specials of the day. It was a mistake that one CSR made. It's not like the T-Mo board put the order down to all CSR's to outright lie to customers so they could sit around their meeting table and laugh as customers get angry.

Thank you for pointing that out... I never saw any of that
Now...as I said, I was aware that it's prohibited, but I was not aware of any TOS stating this.
I'm still not happy about them lying to me, though lol They could have at least said "you were a data hog, so we throttled you, as per our TOS". At this point I would have shrugged my shoulders, and been happy they let me go 3 weeks at the rate I had. Lying to customers, no matter what the reason is definitely not winning them any awards, to say the least. I mean, hypothetically speaking, if they terminate my service for using this much data, what are they gonna say? "our tower is completely inoperable, and maybe we'll have it fixed in two years"???? lol

Just trying to figure out if anyone had a previous 4G LTE plan prior to ordering the N5 and if its proved to be worth it or Not. Being New to that whole side of LTE things. How much GB allowance do you receive a month and average use total.
I have a 3G unlimited plan on O2 which are rare lately since 3 network is the only network that doesn't unlimited DAT at me moment.
Now the nexus 5 is 4G ready in the UK is it really worth chasing a 4G plan yet or wait because 3g works quite fine at moment with hotspots everywhere. Cheapest 4g plan is around £26 for 1gb I think. I didn't even mention 500mb cors that's just silly to even consider on 4G.

In the same boat as yourself at the moment - (o2 simplicity with unlimited data)... Going to switch to giff-gaff (12 quid bundle) and wait it out and see whether 4G prices drop...
At the moment from what I can gather, EE have the monopoly coverage wise so hopefully when the competition kicks in prices will drop.
Certainly don't want to get tied into a long 4G contract at the moment to find high prices & crap coverage ruins the experience...
I'm currently on 3 with an iPhone 5. Going to stick with them if I get a Nexus 5. 2000 minutes, 5000 3-3 minutes, 5000 texts, Totally Unlimited data with unlimited tethering, and 4G at no extra cost in December, all for just £15 a month
As nellisere says, the best one for me is 3. 4g coming next month (very limited) and is cheap and reliable with excellent HSDPA coverage (left voda on my n4 after 8 months of crap service).
I'd look around

4G isn't in my city yet so I won't be switching until that happens, obviously.
Three is the best for data.
Up to 20mb (10-15mb average) on 3G.
Truly unlimited for £12.90 a month.
And 4G will be free - no charge difference or plan changes.

I think I'm going to leave Orange due to poor network coverage, and move to Three.
Nellisere - think I'll get that same plan that you're already on. is the unlimited tethering available for new customers do you know? I've looked on their website but can't find confirmation about that. Cheers.
Another vote for three from me, get great 3G (15 - 20 Mbps) and when 4G turns up it won't cost me any extra. Totally unlimited data as well, I recently used nearly a gigabyte while on holiday in Italy at no extra cost due to their "Feel At Home" deal.
Three is awesome

My dad is on Vodafone and barely gets any decent signal on his S4 and all so I can't expect any better. 02 simplicity has been awesome for me. Only capped once. I'm waiting to see what they do then 3 week brings completion. I was using the n4 before never really bothered much before.
Seems like 3 is the one to watch but is EE coverage that good. Cors its definitely too pricey for me.

Does anyone know if, when 3 changes to LTE in December, will the change in frequency improve penetration into buildings? I had heard somewhere that this would be the case but not really found any info (not looked properly yet to be honest!) Just got my n5 today (a beast!) And want to take advantage of LTE when it arrives, as well as Google music... can't really do so just now as it uses so much data.
Tried a 3 sim but not much use in my flat as the signal is non existent... on virgin "unlimited" but capped after 3.5GB, would love the option to have truly unlimited, LTE would be a bonus ..
Edit: sorry for changing the subject a wee bit - I use approx 2-3gb per month, but that's with me being careful... don't use the phone that much for Google music, but would deff use it more if I had unlimited!

I will probably stay on Tesco network for 4G (but only upgrade when they have 4G in my city) for only £2.50 extra. Three is tempting but who knows when they will have 4G in my area - I can't imagine Plymouth is anywhere near their top priority list. Plus, I must keep my phone number and it'd be quite a hassle to switch networks while keeping same number. Then again, unlimited data would be great. I don't use 3G that much at the moment as WiFi is faster but that would change with 4G so I would appreciate unlimited data then! I may switch but I don't expect there will be 4G on any network in Plymouth for at least another year anyways.

I'm also with Three but I have to disagree with their 3G and HSDPA being lightning fast. There have been numerous occasions where I have had no signal in Central London! Also, at home (I live in London also), I get a speed of 5-6Mbps on my iPhone 5.
That said, I'm hoping their signals and speed improve. I certainly can't complain for unlimited data and tethering for £15.

I was once a happy T-Mobile customer for 24 months until September when I moved to giffgaff on the £10 goodybag. Wherever I was, I always seemed to have signal with T-Mobile, usually 3G or HSDPA most of the time.
Along with the great signal, my T-Mobile deal was simply brilliant: 600 minutes, 500 texts, Unlimited Internet and a free phone (a Wildfire S) for just £11 a month! It seemed however that T-Mobile did not care much for my custom as in the 25th month (after the 24 month offer) the price doubled to £22! I then quickly grabbed a PAC Code (surprisingly very easy) and switched to giffgaff.
However, since my Nexus 5 purchase, I'm looking for a 4G deal and Three is calling to me with it's '4G at no extra cost' promise. Can anyone on Three vouch for it's signal strength, stability and speed?

No. As it's unlikely that we live, work and visit same areas as you. You have 7 days to cancel though. I've been all around London, Cambridge, Oxford and few other places and the only place that wasn't too good was Cambridge. Now and again you get a bad spot, but it's so small that it looks like a local issue with a mast rather than poor coverage.

Arturnip it depends on location so where do you live? Personally I live in Plymouth and everywhere I go apart from forde valley and manedon main road I have excellent signal, it is more reliable than Orange/t-mobile/virgin from my personal experience (cant comment on O2 but family on vodafone and it seems terrible) and much faster for instance at my place of work I get 20mb/s with <90ms ping on Three but on T-mobile I got 8mb(same as Virgin) and on Orange I got 2mb with high ping, glad I left Orange as it was one of the worst and the most expensive! Currently paying £8.50 a month for one plan at Three due to some deals added together (12 month contract) so very happy as its cheap as chips, extremely fast and can only get better with FREE (or close to it...) 4g! Shame its arriving sometime next year and not now .
I'm happy enough with Three's DC-HSDPA speeds
Switch to Three! There 3G speeds are nuts I get around 15Mbit DL and 5Mbit UL. They are rolling out 4G over the next year or so and will not be charging extra for it, meaning if you have a 3G unlimited data plan you will still have unlimited data with 4G.
Three are the only UK provider that will offer unlimited 4G with no extra cost, madness when you compare what EE are offering.
I'm happy with three.
Also on the one plan unlimited internet and tethering for £15 a month is a steal! (Includes 4G when available also).
All depends on there coverage in the places you visit most and people can't tell you on here. Grab a sim (even PAYG) and try it. Can always cancel.
Here is my speeds and I don't exactly live in a high populated area. (Nottinghamshire)

$70 for unlimited minutes, messages, and data(at full 4G/LTE speeds)
$60 for unlimited minutes, messages, and 2.5GB of data(2.5GB at full 4G/LTE speeds, 2G after that)
$50 for unlimited minutes, messages, and 500MB of data(500MB at full 4G/LTE speeds, 2G after that)
$30 for 100 minutes, unlimited messages, and 5GB of data(5GB at full 4G/LTE speeds, 2G after that)
$30 for 1500 combined minutes and texts, and 30MB of data(30MB at full 4G/LTE speeds).
And you didn't mention the single most popular wireless plan in the US today from T-Mobile? SHAME ON YOU!
Anyway...
$30/monthly for 100 minutes of talk/unlimited texts/5GB of data at up to 4G/LTE speeds (if supported in your area); after the 5GB cap is reached it throttles you to 2G/EDGE speeds (typically 50-150Kbps but theoretically up to about 240Kbps - yes that's Kilobits per second so at best you'd see 8-20 Kilobytes per second and that's in the best possible situation) - the data is never cut off so that's where they can get away with claiming "unlimited" in the marketing-speak.
Been on that plan for 2 years now, never had issues with it, can even do VoIP calls using Google Voice + Talkatone on 2G/EDGE and it works fine for me here in Las Vegas, we have fairly solid coverage citywide.
There really is no better plan available at this time, and there's no telling how much longer T-Mobile will offer it so, if you ain't on it yet, get on it - only available at Walmart or at T-Mobile online.
Lol, I'll get on it ASAP.
I've been on the $30/5GB plan a few times. I'm a huge fan. Right now, I'm on the Net10 plan though since T-Mobile coverage can be slightly spotty out here and I hate not being connected.

The $30 5GB data has only 100 minutes.
And the other $30 plan is 1500 minutes and messages (shared pool) and only 30MB of data (not sure how much one can stretch 30MB these days )

Fixed!
That was actually my firs prepaid plan. 15 years old with an iPhone 3GS. 30MB lasts when it's running through a 2G connection, lol.
Is data still cut off after 30MB or is it just throttled?

I believe it's cut. I haven't used that plan, I'm on the $30 5GB data + 10c/minute after the first 100 minutes.
I am not a heavy talker so it's the best deal around. Although I agree on T-mobile's coverage being spotty at best. They have so many dead zones around the city, you can walk into a store and drop from full bars with excellent data speeds down to nothing in a matter of a few feet indoors.
I don't have my nexus 5 yet but its gonna come in the mail. I have straight talk but as far as I know my Sim is only 3g. What do I have to do to get a 4g/LTE to work on my new nexus. Maybe my Sim does do lte just haven't had a phone to support it

I'd also like to stay with straight talk too, would that mean I'd need to get another Sim?

I'm guessing if LTE doesn't work immediately, you'll have to call tech support. I remember hearing someone say they had to call to enable LTE.

Sorry for asking a noob/maybe repeated question, but which network does simple mobile work on?
You should also mention that you are able to pick up 6 month cards routinely for Straight Talk for around $220, which brings the cost per month down to $37ish a month. They pop up on slickdeals routinely once or twice a month.

There is no noob question in my book. It works on T-Mobile's network.

You just need to order an LTE sim form Straighttalk. They have them right now for $7.

I just got my Nexus 5 yesterday & I haven't had a chance to go to an LTE area yet. The price of living in the middle of nowhere...
MetroPCS
you can use it on MetroPCS too, same plans as T-mobile with no roaming data.
$40 Unlimited talk and text - 500mb at 46
$50 Unlimited talk and text - 2.5GB at 4G
$60 Unlimited talk,text,data - unthrottled.
Same performance as T-mobile prepaid, just $10 cheaper and no roaming data.
Sprint $60 Unlimited Prepaid Plan
It looks like Sprint also has a $60 Unlimited plan, though they have restrictions on roaming.
Go to Sprint Website and look under Shop > Plans > No Contract Plans.
Loving MetroPCS so far it's new here in the Baltimore region; has beat out VZW in speed-test everywhere I've compared. Regarding StraightTalk and Net10 don't forget about the daily 4g cap of 150mb.
I also went with MetroPCS because it's a flat rate at $50, includes tax and fees. Not all pre pays do the same. For instance Solavei at first seems like a good deal for 4gb of non throttled data (no LTE access though) but with taxes and fees ur bill will be closer to $60 than the advertised $50.
I really think tmobile / metroPCS is the best all-around deal if service is decent in your area. 4G LTE wih HSPA+42 to fall back on is an amazing proposition.
Need some StraightTalk help: Been with them ever since I got the GNex. Right now, with the N5, I just cut the GNex SIM and it works fine on HSPA+ (6 down 2 up'ish). But I wanted LTE with the N5, so I ordered the Micro SIM for $7. I'm lazy, so I just pay the $45 and I have my credit card on file with them for a recurring charge. How do I get them to transfer the same number to the SIM, and replace the current regular SIM on my account with the new one? I noticed when I ordered the new one, it asked if I was already a ST customer, so I clicked the 'Yes' button. I tried their Live Chat, but it was hopeless.
Thx

It's actually very simple.
Log into your account and select activate a phone or Sim.
Select the transfer my existing Straight Talk service option.
The rest is pretty self explanatory, and you'll be ready to go in minutes

I'm not sure if the 1500 $30 Tmobile plan gets its data cut off, it still gets slowed to 2G like the other plans. Can't get confirmation from the website since they made that plan in-store only, but I came across a CSR reply to a question on the TMo site:
Great questions rollinghills!
This plan includes 1500 minutes OR messages, so one would be deducted for either. Also, once your data limit is used, your web speeds will be slowed. You can learn more about data speed reduction here: Data Speed Reduction.

Has anyone tried AIO Wireless? im in the eastern mass area and was wondering if the speeds are any good.
