sktools definitely the best. even for a noob. you'll never feel sorry for a few $ you are investing. just make an "auto clean", look for wrong/faulty/useless registries, compact the registry and you''ll have a brand new, clean and snappy diamond in yr hands. i always do it immediately after installing a new ROM and you don't believe how much junk it cleans! doing it immediately/first thing after a new ROM 'cose this way if something goes wrong due to a aggressive cleaning of registry i can do a hard rest and check again what i did and shouldn't
the prog has also a "freeup RAM" file and i use it once or twice each day instead of doing a soft reset. why? is obvious
the progs contain also lots of "tweaks" of yr system and for the look of yr diamond.

More Reading == More Confusion (8125)

Welp I was fixing to pay Cingular $350 to prematurely cancel our contract b/c I was about ready to throw my POS 8125 out the window. Then someone referred me here and I'm cautiously optimistic that my blood pressure will once again be below 250/150.
But after reading through alllll the threads on alllll the roms...I'm a little more confused now than before.
Simply put, which ROM for my 8125 is:
Fastest?
Most Stable?
The custom AKU 2.2 ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=51047 ) was recommended to me...but now I've gotten lost...
Thanks.
I saw your thread on hofo. This place is 100x cooler and more helpful.
I've had my phone for less than six weeks and read a ton right before buying the phone. As soon as I bought it, I did all of this and haven't had any problems at all.
Get lokiwiz first. I used v0.2b and it worked fine for me. Be sure to take extra time to read the instructions.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=33796
Select your ROM and perform the upgrade:
ftp://xda:[email protected]/Wizard/Roms/Cingular/
I selected Cingular_RUU_WIZARD_217_AKU2_WWE_CF2_A2DP-fixed.exe from the directory. This is version 2.17 and I haven't had any problems at all. I've been following discussions on newer ROMs and plan to stay where I am for now. You can run this through Activesync and don't even need to establish a partnership. I did my phone, then 3 others all the same way (my wife's and then two for the neighbors) and didn't have a single problem with any of them. Running from the point at which you open the box and start going, this takes anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour once you do this over and over. I've only done this once per phone but seem to be operating a free upgrade service.
Finally, you'll want to hack the registry.
There are tons of registry hacks here:
http://www.indippc.com/v3/index.php?topic=322.msg2018;topicseen
and here: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=WM5_Tweaks_Other
and here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=38957
You'll probably want to use Resco explorer and their registry editor. Those are nice because you can try them before buying them and make sure you like them. There are others and I tried Total Commander first, but found the Resco product more effective for importing the .reg files I'd created to help speed up the edits.
Hope this helps!
100Tbps, that's awesome info. Thanks for pointing this out. There are a ton of threads with tons of info scattered through and it's easy to miss something. I remember reading that somebody suggested putting all this info in one thread or post and you seem to have done most of it.
One question, is creating a .reg file for WM5 just as easy as creating it for XP/2K? I would like to put my favorite tweaks in one .reg file and import one file.
Thanks!
Well with such a great reply like that, I'd have to agree that this place is beter than hofo.
Concerning Rosco, do you think that it would be better than SPB Pocket Plus? I only ask b/c I read on hofo that Resco slowed the 8125 down more than SPB....but I've been running SPB and it definately slows down my today screen refresh. Does anyone know anything about this?
Also (I posted this in hofo, but I have yet to get an intelligent reply), how does everyone's video run on their 8125? I'm wondering if something is wrong with mine b/c pretty much everything that I try to play only plays at about 0.5 frame per second but with normal video. For example, navigating to the windows media favorite that comes bundled into the favorites menu while my 8125 is connected via USB to my broadband connection, and then clicking on ANY of the videos (they are either 37kb or 54kb) gives me this problem. It's reallllly annoying as I was hoping to later hook up my 8125 with a slingbox--but if I can't get any videos to play normall...this obviosly won't be feasable. Is this par for the 8125? Or is mine just screwy? And yes, this is after both a fresh factory ROM installation and the new 2.2 beta I just installed. Same problem.
Thanks!

Creating the .reg file is very easy. I used Total Commander on my phone to create the .reg files. When I hacked my wife's phone, I discovered Total Commander didn't recognize the .reg files and that's when I tried Resco's product. Their program registered the .reg files but even better, has an import button. So I placed all my .reg files in one place and one by one went through and imported them. I have just under 20 of them. If I ever get time to figure out how to do this, I'll probably try to condense them into larger .regs or learn how to make a .cab.

I actually don't have the Resco product installed on my phone. When I hacked mine, I used Total Commander for regedits, then used Resco on the three other phones. I actually installed it when I was done, but I'm more than likely going to go back and buy it the next time I need to do this. I haven't tred the SPB product so I can't say.
For videos, this might be a more complex discussion.
If you mean recording videos, there is a thread around here explaining registry hacks to increase the frame rate when recording so it plays back smoother. I thought I had it in my collection but don't see it, but I do recall seeing a discussion about this.
If you mean streaming videos over the net or files placed on the SD card or in memory, it could be one of a few things. You may need to overclock the player to get it to play more effectively (this is 100% a guess), try a different player (I've seen people bow down to TCPMP), or the bitrate may be too much and / or an oversized video. Hopefully others will chime in with their experiences about any of these avenues since I've said a bunch without really offering anything concrete. I believe TCPMP is free so that may be the easiest thing to try.
thanks.
I'm actually talking about streaming any video. It's not a bandwidth problem b/c I've tested it while connected to my home broadband over usb. And it's not the server b/c I can turn right aroung and stream the same crappy qualit 37kbs video on my pc and it plays fine. It just seems like the 8125 should be able to handle this w/o any problems...

I use Spb Pocket Plus and I like it a lot. It does slow down the 8125 a bit but I don't think it's any worse than Resco's product, though I don't remember using Resco's. However, SBSH's iLauncher is pretty good. It has a ton of options, much more than Pocket Plus, but Pocket Plus just seems to be a more refined product. You might want to give iLauncher a try.

I was going to ask the same thing lol
I divided these into things I think anyone would want (the general folder) and things that may just be personal preference (the personal preference folder). For example, some people may use Hotmail and thus not need to remove it from the list of Inbox options - and not everyone uses Microsoft Voice Command and wouldn't want to change their dialer to something not installed - so these are in the personal preference folder.
These are what I extracted from my phone after I edited them manually (using the 2.17 ROM summiter cooked for us) and created the reg file for my own future use in case I re-flashed. I think it's important to mention newer ROMs may not need some of these because they may already be there because Microsoft (or summiter, the grande provolone of ROM cooking) enabled them - or the registry may be different. So my suggestion is manually verify the path is present before importing to make sure you're actually getting what you want.
Thanks for that
I installed the fixed 2.17 and so far so good...except for one rather big problem--the battery meter no longer works. It just tells me that I always have 100% battery life and the icon at the top taskbar now looks filled in with a single line diagonally across the center. How do I fix this? I also should mention that I'm now using Resco Explorer 2005 5.40...so I don't know if the problem is related to the firmware or Resco.
Any advice? Anyone seen this before?

Backlight Manager

Is there an app that makes the backlight lit lower than current backlight for a time (secs) if the device is not used? (just to save some power) Just like in some nokia phones...
I'm managing to build one but I'm a super noob in CE programming using VB.
I dunno how to use registry so that user who modified the app will stay as it is when you softreset the device.
With Mortscript you should be able to write this quite easily. I once built one script to turn backlight back on when Tomtom mistakenly turned it off. The next day I received the Tomtom update that didn't have that bug...
There is hardly any learning curve, the manual is just a short reference, download some sample scripts, look into them and you can start writing.
success

Could you tell me more detail about Mortscript for TOMTOM?
I also worry about TOMTOM backlight. Now I use phoneAlarm to turn on backlight.
I actually used 3 scripts for Tomtom backlight problem, but didn't save them because Tomtom 6.03 no longer had that problem. Putting it all in one script didn't work because once the script started Tomtom it paused till Tomtom closed down. So one script called the Tomtom start script, that second script ended once Tomtom was starting but the first one was still able to call the third one, which wrote the correct registry settings for backlight.
Read all about Mortscript on http://www.sto-helit.de/index.php?module=page&entry=ms_overview&action=view
still downloading Visual Studio 2005... 2GB+ remaining...
Any suggestions?
Who said anything about Visual Studio???
Mortscript is a very tiny download from the link I gave you. And it's freeware.
Visual Studio is nice for very professional programmers, although lots of them use freeware/open source tools as well. For such a tiny utility as what you were talking about it's like killing a mosquito by setting off all nuclear bombs at once.

Your 128MB of RAM is splitted between RAM, RAMDisk and page pool.

How safe are they?
will they brick my phone?
I'm looking for the nice looking dialer screen the one that covers the screen with nice numbers and cyan and black background.
Well as you see this is the first time im using a smartphone.
I think i will have to read a whole noobie guide explaining everything and not just the basics.
Thank you very much.

cabs
cabs are installer files similar setup files on a pc (very overly simplified). most cabs can be successfully by going to settings-system-remove programs so you can try it out and remove it if you don't like it.
if you have the right installer/cab files for your particular device (ppc, smartphones don't have touch screens) you will not brick your device.
you will not brick your device if you first HardSPL (see sticky) and use the files Dutty has collected and has available.
READ THE WIKI FIRST - most general questions can be answered by reading it.

A partial answer to your questions:
Regarding cab files. In general anything you find here will be relatively safe. BUT things do occassionally go wrong and indeed some cabs can change settings and change the behaviour of other applications in a way you do not like. For this reason you should (I would say MUST) use a good full backup application. I use SPB Backup but you might prefer Sprite. If you do a full backup before installing Cabs then you can always restore the backup if things go wrong. (It's also good practice anyway in case of fatal crashes or corruption)
The Kaiser is a PPC not a Smartphone (It's better he said controversially). There are differences, and indeed when googling for cabs and programmes you should go for the PPC (ARM) versions not the Smartphone versions.
Regarding dialer skins - use the search button or go to the "Search XDA-Dev using Google" sticky post for other search possibilities.
Don't forget to read the Wiki - linked on the brown bar near the top of the screen.
Also don't forget that most apps and reg changes that apply to WM6 will apply well to the Kaiser. So if you search and find a WM6 cab or such on a forum for another device - it will likely be ok to install ok on your Kaiser. (But don't forget my backup suggestion above!)
Cheers
Mike
PS Welcome on-board, enjoy

Hello,
Go to the Spb Software House website site. Just google it and then you will find Spb Backup. I am new to the pocket pc world myself but try not to get in a hurry and install all the cool stuff (cabs) on this website. Make sure you understand what these programs are before installing. I made that mistake and after HOURS of reading and installing... I had to do a hard reset.
For backups I use Sprite, but will probably one day use Spb Backup as I use three of there products and all are GREAT! While on their website check out Spb Pocket Plus... It's AWESOME, IMHO
Many thanks for the help.

Hey I have another question...
I already downloaded this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=350700
But I'm afraid something happens to my Tilt, and I don't know how to run flashes and stuff.
I downloaded a backup SPB but dont know how to use it.
The main reason I downloaded that big rom is because I just read somewhere around this forums that it's the best bettery saver rom ever.
Help...
Im learning abit more, just downloaded the 10 com mannager and disabled the same as you did.
Hope this helps.
You need to CID unlock to put that rom on your tilt.

A few questions about my new Wing

Hi everyone... I am trying to find out a few things about my new phone. I am brand new to Windows Mobile, coming from a blackberry, and have done much searching on here, but haven't found exactly what I'm looking for.
I have found tons of posts on how to disable threaded texts. Not sure why anyone would want to do this, (I'm still used to my blackberry, and I love the threaded texts)... so I am wondering how I get that, because mine must be already disabled. Mine only shows the messages that were sent to me. I did get a program from a guy I work with called Xtreme text, which is ok, but kind of slow.
Also, I would like to know if I can disable or at least change the sound that my phone makes when I send a sms. I went into sounds and turned off notifications, and that turned it off, but it also turned off the sound for when I receive a text.
I saw that there are different operating systems I guess they are, and some of them maybe would give me the things I'm looking for, but a lot of them say that the transcriber has been disabled, and that is the whole reason I had to lose the Blackberry, because we are using a new program at work and I need to be able to have my phone signed with the stylus.
I would appreciate any help I can get. Thanks!
Welcome to xda-devs! consider this your "get questions anwered without just being to sold to search" pass.
Threaded texts are not natively supported in WM6. You must flash a WM6.1 rom for natively supported threaded texts. Flashing roms is really fun and kind of addicting (at least imho). There are currently 2 methods for flashing roms- USPL and Hard-SPL. Your phone is protected from rom changing with a "CID-Lock" that is built into the SPL of your phone. The USPL uses a temporary SPL to disable the lock where as Hard-SPL flashes a totally new SPL that has no CID-lock.
Romwise, we do not yet have an abundance of cooks. We have two main cooks, itje and ttran. They make the "Touch-it" and "Open Touch" roms, respectively.
Now about the transcriber. The transcriber takes the text that you write and translates it into text. I am not sure what program you could use to actually sign documents.
Welcome to xda-devs!
Thanks fzzy! Ok, so in your opinion, what would be the easier way for a newb to do this, and what would be the flash that I wanted to use? I am totally new to all of this and will need step by step instructions on how to do all of it without turning my phone into a paperweight.
Any suggestions and help will be awesome! The main things I want are the threaded texting, and to be able to scroll through my contacts with my finger like the iphone I guess. Also, I would really like for the phone not to make that bell noise when I send an sms. The thing with the transcriber i believe is built into the program that we will be using, but the ability for the phone to accept the movement of the stylus needs to be active still.
Thank You!

Very important.....
And if you hard-spl... you can test any rom you want....
Yeppers. As fzzyrn said, you don't need the transcriber since all that does is translate what you write into words. If you do want it, though, you can built a ROM using my kitchen that includes it.

Hmm I still don't really understand what any of that means. Maybe I will just have to learn to like this phone the way it is.
It does say though, under "programs you need" that you need active sync if you have XP. What if you are using Vista?
I am going to keep reading posts to find out as much as I can, but this is all pretty confusing to me so far...

My suggestion:
1. USE your device about a few weeks. You never tune a car before you tested it.
2. Meanwhile READ, READ, READ and you will understand WinMobile etc.... and Activesync and WMDC on Vista
3. NOW start searching apps you want to try....
4. And now think about falshing a tuned up Operating system....
But please take time for 1-3!!!!!!!

Would it maybe be easier for me to just try the palm threaded sms program, since that's really the biggest thing I want? Also, does anyone know how to turn off that stupid annoying sound that comes up and says message sent? That thing is really annoying me!
Thanks!

you got to reg edit it(use a reg editor like PHM Reg edit0
then go to HKLM(hey_local_machine)\software\microsoft\inbox\settings
SMSNoSentMsg = 1
you might have to create the value...

Ok, sorry but I'm really new to this... is this reg editor something I run on the phone, or on the computer while the phone is connected to it?
Thanks
youhave to install PHM reg edit to your phone or use this on your desktop computer(attached):
ok, so I started the regeditor and connected my phone, and went into HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Inbox but then there is no settings folder, only "Ldapinfo", "sendDriver", and "Svc". Any suggestions on where to go from there?
Thank you!
here i created a cab file for you.
just copy it to your wing then click it and it will fix this sent message thing
hmm I copied it and clicked it, and it opened a bunch of text in IE, but it didn't stop the message sent notification. Not sure if I did something wrong or what...
lordy lordy. how'd i forget ivan? haha.
we should also add albert now what with his carbon rom, eh?
oh by the way, you need to click it from your device, not form your computer. trix is for kids (get it?). oh and you should get some "cab via activesync" software so you don't hafe to repeatedly copy and open.
so it didnt install at all?
i tried it on my wing and showed this:

Let's say "Official"...

Hi everyone! I recently bought a T-mo Wing on ebay and as it's my first pda phone I did exactly the same every newbie does: I've messed things up.
The first problem was that I started to download and install every app I thought I would use. Soon realized that IN FACT I would use 10% of all that ans started uninstalling things. Till there, I was good, but then I found pocket mechanic pro and its "registry tweaker & cleanup" killed my voice command and made the phone loop forever on bootup unless I remove the memory card. Besides, I have memory shortage problems and lots of things I will never use like myFaves, t-zones, tons of icons and silly images .... So my questions are ....Is there any T-mo "official" ROM with all the T-mo stuff removed?? I don't have problems with the rest of the apps and bricking the phone is not an option: I'm latin american!! used wing was really a financial effort for me!! The second question would be: Is there any way to restore the registry keys that pocket mechanic erased?? I know the answers might have been already posted but I've been browsing the forums for about 6 hours with no success ..... Can anyone help me on this??
Thanks
Wow.... really long

The easiest way to go back is to do a hard reset. (Hold the two softkeys and press the soft reset key.) As far as "official" ROM, there isn't, but there are a lot of third party ROMs. If you hardSPL your phone (which runs the slight risk of bricking your phone) then you brick-PROOF your phone.
Wow!! I can't believe you ...I mean YOU, took som time to answer my post!! I read lots of stuff here made by you. Thanks man! I'm really honored.
The thing is that if I hard reset my wing all the T-mo stuff will be there again, and some of it is non removable. There are lots of pictures and icons that I won't ever use. What if I take the latest T-mo ROM and delete all that without modifying anything else?? I mean, no t-zones, no my faves and no TONS of avatar pictures.... would that be possible?? Again, thanks for answering

lol. Thanks for thinking so highly of me.
It's possible, you have to dump the ROM and then recook it, though.
You could also wait for my SuperJustKitchen and build your own custom ROM. ^_^ But either way, you HAVE to HardSPL. There are no ROMs that can be flashed with the stock SPL other than the stock one.
That's exactly what I'm going to do!! I'll wait for your SuperJustKitchen and remove all unneeded stuff from the latest official T-mo Rom. In the meantime, I will try to recover my voice command without hard resetting just for fun. I really don't need it because my spoken english is horrible and by the time it worked, almost never recognized what I said . Anyway, it really annoys me that a supposed registry cleanup made by pocket mechanic messed up the system that way. The Wizcode forum has a solution that actually works just for the full version of MVC. Nor upgrade nor OEM are fixed by that "patch". I would like to know if there's any way to decompile it and make the corrections manually. It's supposed to restore some deleted registry keys but I couldn't find wich ones ....Would that be possible??
If it's a cab, it can turned into a OEM/EXT package which lets you see the registry keys by themselves.
Sorry for the delay....
Hi again! It was not a .CAB .... It was a [email protected] .exe file. Tried to open with winRAR and 7zip but with no success. Finally i found the dump of the .reg file that voice command uses. I was not able to import it (there are some path errors and I know NOTHING about reg scripting), so i had to write all the keys and values manually. It worked!!!! After a soft reset voice command was there! After that I disabled it because my english sucks and VC could not understand what i said ..... but still works!! Still waiting for your kitchen to make a new ROM for my wing .... Thanks again for taking the time to answer me ...
I don't know well, but...
Maybe you can have good luck in hard-resetting and do not enter into customization, but soft-resetting.
Another way is going into Extended ROM and analizing the .cab files there, and erasing some of them (better if you save them into another place).
Please wait till someone "better than me" will confirm those data I told.
On the other way, if you don't like T-Mo ROMs the best you can do is Hard-SPL and flashing a new radio+ROM. You by yourself realized Ivan has good ROM's. And the one I'm using now is also good.
