dumb question.... but i was under the impression you could make a phone call and access the internet at the same time. Is this not true?
I was on the phone and tried to access the internet and was told NO. i am on a 3G connection.
Well ofcourse I do not know exactly what happened with you, but some providers have 'buggy' setups that can cause this. Most of those providers are working hard fixing that problem right now.
You can turn 3G off somewhere, I know I've seen it, but now I can't find it. Change the type of connection from UMTS to GPRS/GSM, there's a setting _somewhere_. If you do that, you will only get GPRS connectivity. Try calling and getting data at the same time then, if it works, your provider is not really ready for 3G yet.
Interesting. I am with ATT and 3G seems to be full power in all locations I am using it in.
I cant find where / how to turn 3G off and only use GPRS.
I can tell you that I have tested 3G with internet sharing to my notebook over bluetooth. I was able to talk with a BT headset, and access the internet with the laptop thru the phone, all at the same time. When connected the phone shows "H" or "3G". This is with a Kaiser but I would expect the same from a Tilt. AT&T in Southern Calif. I installed "Schen's 10 button comm manager" and with it's 3G button I can hold off 3G, then the display shows "E" and no simul connections are possible.
You can only use voice and data with HSDPA. GPRS/Edge does not allow this, they use the same band for data as the voice band. If you see the "H" icon they you are picking up the extra data bands needed for this to work. I have tested this will streaming live tv to my phone from my media center via webguide. Even with the "3G" icon i was not able to stream video and talk at the same time, the video would pause while i was on the phone then resume connection when i hung up or the "H" icon appeared.
I can confirm that I'm seeing this bug. There is no 3g towers in my area. I'll be showing the edge icon and be talking and when i try to load a web page, Opera will complain that a data connection does not exist.

It's not a bug... GPRS/Edge is not capable of simultaneous voice/data. You will not be able to do both until 3G is available in your area (though this doesn't explain the OP's issue).
I found sthg really weird in my unlocked ATT tilt today. I m curently using T-mobile. As many of you know that, you rarely get signal/reception in basement if you are using t-mobile. but today, when i went down to the basement, reception was gone w/ the E icon, then after a while, the E icon was changed to G, then the signal was detected and I could make phone call too. and the carrier on the screen is still T-mobile. Nothing changed except the E/G Icon. I then checked w/ my friend who is also using T-mobile(nokia phone), no reception at all. Does any one know what the difference between E and G icon on top of the screen is? will I be charged for some type of service fee or something if I make calls or use the Tmobile web w/ the [G] icon? please tell me if you guys know anything about it.
thanks in advance...
The "E" is picking up an edge reception, i get it in the UK sometimes because i have a crappy t-mobile signal in my house. When its displayed i cant make phonecalls/txts etc so might be picking up another carriers signal because i dont think t-mob uses edge here. The "G" is gprs just the basic slow phones signal.
G is when GPRS is available, E is when EDGE is available. No extra charge. This could have been easily answered by looking in the manual.......page 29
I guess this may be different for T-Mobile (and could possibly vary on the ROM you're using) but the E on my device is for EDGE service, and G is for 3G service. 3G, obviously, is the better of the two. But I'm on AT&T of course...

I don't think T-mobile has 3G here in NY.
Thanks for all the replies above
so, the signal of GPRS is stronger than the EDGE? if yes, then we are all able to get reception even if in basement. No need to get verizon anymore... lol
but why can't my friends' phones picked up any GPRS signal? is that because their phones don't support GPRS?

And then H (HSDPA) just defeats them all.

No no no, g is not 3g, G is GPRS, the slower version of EDGE, thats the reason why you can call in your basement now!
G is GPRS
E is EDGE
3G is UMTS
H is HPSDA
first is the slowest, last is the fastest, so if the fastest is not availible, it switches to a slower one, like happened in the TS situation
My icon used to pretty much always be on 3G, sometimes switching to E when I drove to my brothers house which is about 25 miles away. But recently I haven't been seeing 3G at all, but only H. I did see E a couple days ago, but I haven't seen 3G in more than a week now. I thought H was only supposed to show up when you were using a data network or something? At least that's what I read somewhere on here a while ago... Any explanations?
that H is wat you want to see
first H shows up when downloading data means you're using HSDPA, but is H shows up when u're not downloading data, you have HSUPA too
Ya, as XtreMe_G indicated this is easily answered by opening up the manual.

Yeah, I know HSDPA is what I want to see the most, but when the hell did AT&T have HSUPA? I live in the Washington DC/Northern Virginia Metro area... Anyone else from the area noticing this?
And as for the OP's question about E and G, there is no difference between signal strength and ability to make voice calls. E just means that the cell offers Enhanced G.
Whether you see a G or and E (or 3g or H) is dictated by the data connection offered by the cell - which has no baring on voice at all.
If you have any signal, you should be able to make voice calls - the speed of the data connection (ie for web/email etc) is the only thing indicated by the Letter - except that 3g/H can also do simultaneous voice and data where G (and E) can't.

That's what I thought, but then I tested my data connection speeds and when I'm supposedly on basic GPRS the speeds are much greater than anything either GPRS or EDGE could accomplish (unless EDGE was having a perfect day).
I did notice however that it only shows G instead of 3G when I force the phone NOT to use 3G while 3G is available in the area. If I allow it to use 3G service it shows up as "3G" and the speeds remain the same. As soon as I force it not to use "3G" it shows up as just "G" but the speeds stay the same.
"E" or EDGE always seems to be indicative of the correct speed. But for my device it switching between G & 3G are one in the same, and the speed doesn't change at all.
Could just be a glitch with the software on my phone, but that's how it is for me.

Thanks for that.
That will be the reason that when I used a tomtom one and got traffic via my bluetooth phone, a traffic update would kill any call I was making.
I assume I am correct in also expecting my TyTn II to ignore voice calls (or drop gprs data connection) if I am using the TyTn II for internet access for my laptop and a voice call comes in?
I sometimes get the E but as far as i know we dont have Edge in t mobile UK.
how do you remove the G?

data speeds seem to be the same though.
My G Icon changes to E Icon
Hello,
I have a small problem...
First I will Switch ON my wizard. After Switch ON I will see a G Icon at top of the today screen ( That is correct ). When I press the power button, the screen goes off (i.e Goes to Sleep Mode ) and again I press it to wake up. but now the G icon will change to E icon.
I not understanding why this happens.........
Also when i connect to GPRS internet but it shows as I am connected to EDGE with E icon ( This happens on when I wakeup the device )
My probem is that why the icon should change when I wakeup the device.
To confirm you that, I have also disabled the "EnableDifferGprsEdgeIcon" setting in registry.
This problem will not occur in wm5 but only in wm6 or wm6.1.
In wm5 There is no E icon or it is not showing as "connected to EDGE" when I connect to GPRS internet.
Please any one help...............
Thanks in advance

I recently installed the eOS 4.888.FiRe ROM on my Tilt and it has been working nicely. I noticed some additional settings that weren't available to me when I was using the stock HTC ROM. What is "HSDPA" and "AGPS"? And will it cost me to leave these turned on? I notice when I turn on HSDPA, I see a an "H" icon at the top rather than the usual "3G" icon.

what is google???
anyways simple answer:
hsdpa is a form of data connection which is faster than 3g.
agps stands for assisted gps. it is same as normal gps except that agps uses a server to cut down on the time to requires to get ur location using gps.
both won't cost u anything extra but ur carrier does need to support them for u to be able to use.
Thank you. I just wanted to know if they both won't cost me anything extra. You never know these days with Cellphone companies. I turned on both HSDPA and AGPS. So far my calls have been going through just fine and my navigation software continues to function normally.
How do I know if my carrier (AT&T) supports HSDPA and AGPS? I hate having to call customer service to ask so I'd rather ask here.

I used KaiserTweak to set my phone to HSDPA. I am an AT&T user. It's worked fine. No additional charges. I don't use AGPS so I can't respond to that part of your question.

Thanks for your response. I just use it for voice calls anyway. Do you see any improvements? Or is it specifically if you subscribe to a data plan? And do you also see an "H" icon at the top rather than a "3G" icon?

HSDPA has to do with you data connection, so unless you have a data plan you really won’t see the benefit.

Google
n. company that was founded in 1998 at Stanford University by Larry Page and Sergey Brin and serves as a search engine on the Internet
x
google
v. (Computers) search for data on the Web using the search mechanism Google; search on the Internet for particulars relating to new or likely to be girlfriend or boyfriend
HSDPA doesn't cost anything to activate, but if you are on a restrictive tariff it is a lot easier to run up over usage charges.
In the UK you need to usually be paying at least £30 a month to have the unlimited mobile broadband and e-mail. I would personally check your contract before you let the HSDPA run loose.
Rob
As mentioned multiple times, neither HSDPA or AGPS will cost you anything. You will know if you are in an area that has HSDPA because of the H icon. If it goes back to 3G then ATT does not have HSDPA in that area. If it goes to E then you are back on Edge. As also was mentioned, neither of these have any impact on your phone calls. HDSPA = Data and AGPS = using the cell towers or the internet to help you lock on your GPS location quicker.
And yes, if you had used google to search for this you would have probably got a better explanation in a less amount of time.
A week ago I got a second hand Tilt. It AT&T branded but a HTC rom was flashed to it, ROM version 3.28.405.0 WWE, Radio 1.65.17.56, Pototcol 25.83.40.02H.
My issue is I see not "3G" indicator on the screen in areas where I know there's coverage (my other phone does indicate 3G coverage). So what could this mean? Is something missing??
Any info is appreciated.
Thanks!

Having already read the HTC User Manual for the TyTN II perhaps? If you get the pdf from HTCs website (or even search for it) and have a read, you'll see that in areas of 3G coverage, sometimes the device will display a 'H' which is superior to ordinary old 3G.
My issue is that I'm in an area with 3G coverage, my other cell indicates this with a "3G" icon on it's screen, but my tilt does not indicate or detects 3G coverage. There's no "3G" or "H" on my display.

Can u post screenshot of your screen? What icons do u have there(on the upper bar)?
You may want to look for something like Kaiser Tweak or something else that disables 3g.. Also you can try tapping on the signal icon at the top and make sure that all the data/3g stuff is turned on at the bottom.
Don't know how to get screenshoot. On the top of the Today screen there's, from right to left, the task manager, the battery, the signal strength (just the little antenna and the bars) and the WiFi icon.
Where in Kaiser Tweak or Advanced Configuration Tool could disable 3G?
Kaiser Tweak = under Data
Advanced config = again, under Data.
Tried it...no joy!
Went to Adv. Config. and eneble everything under data connections. Still nothing.
Does your sim support 3G?

Did you check in Advance config to see if just the icons are turned of ? I believe you can just turn the icons off ( because some people find them annoying ) but still call and connect at 3G speed. Are you lacking speed or just the icons. ?
Let me re-state
I've had this Tilt for about a week, my other cell (Samsung A737) indicates "3G" all the time while I'm at work so yes my sim is 3G. This Tilt has never indicated "3G".
I went to Adv. Config under data connections and enabled everything.
What I'm trying to figure out, is this Tilt unable to detect "3G" or is it a missing icon thing.
IF
1. you have a 3g sim
2. Kaiser Tweak and Advanced config don't have 3g disabled
3. you don't have the "nodata.cab" installed
4. 3G data is turned on in the comm manager
5. HSDPA is turned on in /settings/connections/advanced network
6. All the proper info is set for your connection "media net"
and you still don't have 3g.
I would say at the very least do a hard reset or update your ROM.
Anything I'm missing?

Say what?
I'm sorry ChumleyEX but that's not an answer...I dont have a data plan so MediaNet is, in my opinion, not an issue. Like I said before, that didn't keep my other (and less sophisticated cell) from detecting 3G coverage... anyway more data!!
I tried turnning off wifi to see if wifi icon becomes "3G", that doesn't work, the wifi icon gets an "X" over it & does not become "3G".
Yesterday I found out that if you try to make a video call the cell tells you if there's a 3G network available, so I tried this in my office & it answers no 3G network available.
Last night I started experimenting with flashing, I knew this cell had been flashed before by someone else, for one this is an AT&T branded Tilt but the previous owner has using it on another carrier and when I access the bootloader among the information there was "Spl 1.0 Olipro".
I flashed a couple of Hard SPLs & a couple of radios to try and it got me thinking, could the lack of "3G" be a radio or ROM issue??

It definitely could be radio rom issue, but ... I am flashoholic, that means I flash almost every rom that comes out. And on most roms that I flashed the 3G icon changes after some time to the X, but after going to the internet via gprs the 3G appears once again. I dont know why is this happining, there was a disscusion about this, but I dont know in which thread.
The funny thing is although I have the X icon, I am in 3G area and I can make video calls and use the 3G cappabilities. So I dontknow why u can not.
" I knew this cell had been flashed before by someone else, for one this is an AT&T branded Tilt but the previous owner has using it on another carrier and when I access the bootloader among the information there was "Spl 1.0 Olipro"
So it's possible that the media net info is incorrect. Also, your simple phone that has the 3G show up is just that, a simple phone. This tilt isn't so simple.
if this link works, download the file and run it.

Hi guys as the title says I never receive any 3G, HSDPA, or EDGE connection on my O2 XDA Ignito...only thing I connect with is GPRS/GSM (i.e. the G icon shows in the taskbar)
I know I've turned off HSDPA connection in the menu, but why do I never get any 3G or EDGE connections?? I'm on the Orange UK and T-Mobile UK network...tried both and none give me anything except GPRS.
Anyone know what the issue might be? Could it be a hardware problem or is it more likely to do with the settings?
Cheers

Get navdavi commmanager and you can turn 3g on / off with it.
I think there is an option in settings somewhere too.
Turning off 3g turns off Edge/HSDPA too.
