SMS Not Working - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Has anyone managed to stop SMS from working? Something I've tweaked or installed is preventing me from sending messages - when I tap the SMS option nothing at all happens. I don't seem to be able to receive them either. With all the fiddling (Kaiser Tweak, GPRS Monitor, SBP etc) who knows what I've done. Just hoping someone else may have stumbled over the same problem before I have to reset everything back to original (It's the only fault).
Thanks

Are you able to compose an SMS at all?
Have you verified that your Text Message Service Center number is not blank?
Please provide more information. Phone, ROM, Carrier, etc...

Thanks for the interest,
I'm using WM6 standard ROM 1.82.707.0.WWE (ie not cooked) on the Tytn2, the service centre number is there and is correct according to the carrier (Telstra Australia).
It used to work fine so I'm assuming that I've tweaked something I should have left alone, or one of these installs has jammed it up - just no idea what!
If I pull up a contact and tap the 'Send Text Message' option nothing at all happens, just sits there looking at me! I don't seem to be able to receive texts either.
Installed are the standard apps plus Google Maps, GPRS Monitor, Kaiser Tweak, Resco File Explorer, TomTom, SPB mobile Shell and Diary, QuickMenu.
I know it's a tricky one to fix from a distance (so many settings, so little patience) but any thoughts would be appreciated.

I had the same problem a few months ago and tried everything. Defaulted my tweaks and adv config etc. Eventually I had to reinstall my rom which is a cooked rom and all came back and have not had any problems since then. Hpefully you do not have to do this. You should try a cooked rom.

Ok I want to take a shot at this.....
Ok Does Telstra have the ability to send SMS to mobiles from their website? If so try sending one to yourself.
Next. Go into Messaging, Menu -> New -> SMS. Type in your mobile and Send.
Oh and Uninstall The SPB product Soft Reset and try again.
Let me know If that works.

Can't find a way to send sms from telstra (easily) so tried from another mobile. The other mobile says it can't send the message. I'm (almost) sure this is my phone rejecting it rather than a network of other phone's fault.
When I tap on Messaging in the menu nothing happens - doesn't take me anywhere at all. Same thing if I tap on 'send text message' option in contacts.
Removed the spb stuff, did a soft reset, still no go.
Keep the thoughts coming though. In the end it would probably be easier and quicker just to hard reset now, but it's the challenge of figuring it out that's interesting isn't it? It's going to be one of those dead simple slap your forehead things I reckon.
Thanks for all the help so far.

Have you tried reinstalling the Arcsoft SMS/MMS client? There are many different versions floating around XDA.

OK it's fixed. Here's what I did:
Discovered that the 'Messaging' menu item in the start menu pointed to a file called tmail.exe
Used file explorer to navigate to tmail and ran it directly
Fell over laughing when it actually ran
From that time on it works via any link, such as the start menu and contacts option to SMS
I have no idea what that's all about but I'm really happy to have it back - although I haven't tested sending and receiving texts yet
Interestingly a very similar thing happened to Mortscript - I have a script that rotates the screen and runs TomTom (not mine, found on xda-dev) and it wouldn't work either after all this fiddling until I ran it directly rather than through any links. Now it works fine too.
If anyone knows /why/ it happened I'd be interested.
Thanks for all the support. Really great knowing there's such a community around.

Alrighty then, spoke too soon. Now it works when the sd card is out, but not when it's in. Same old problem, tap on messaging and nothing. With the card out of the slot, messaging appears. What the heck is this?! Could it be something to do with where messages are stored? I'm also getting this storagecard2 problem each time I take the card in and out which is easy enough to fix but could be contributing I suppose. Any more ideas?
Edit: I repaired the storagecard2 directory issue, cleaned up all the references to storagecard2 in the registry (about 4), unticked the option to use the card to store attachments, and it seems to work. I've also re-synched and re-installed spb mobileshell. Last time it seemed to fail at that last step but this time is still working. Even after a final soft reset. I haven't reinstalled spb diary.
Has me stumped but works again now. Sorry to bore you all with this but someone may have a simple answer and the ordeal might help someone else I hope.

Based on all of these issues, I would definitely suggest re-flashing your current ROM again (not just a hard reset), and do a full format of your SD card outside of the phone. It sounds like you've got some major corruption going on...

Yes delete the storage card directory, if it gets corrupt the unit won't send or receive SMS.
Speaking from experience here

Thanks guys,
I've re-done the storage card and all is still working ok. I'm reluctant to reflash while it's working so I'll wait to see how long it keeps up.
Thanks again.

Messaging has stopped loading

I've recently bought a Kaiser (Vodafone 1615) and weirdly messaging has stopped loading, I can't check my messages or send and SMS, etc.
I've soft reset the device, but it's still the same. Is my only option now to hard reset and lose all data?
Hello Forums!
Hi scottola,
It sounds like some kind of software fault has developed with your handset. If you got it directly from Vodafone on a contract then you're covered by a warranty for the duration of your contract term.
If you would like us to arrange repair of the handset for you please contact us on 191 and we'll diagnose what's wrong and get it fixed without delay.
Hope this helps,

This is weird: my messaging app has also just stopped working. It won't load from the buttons, or using the exe directly. Is it hard reset time?
Any thoughts guys? No emails - can you imagine?
I'm sorry, but without help from any one else I can only offer, try a soft reset, if that don't work try a hard reset, as if your device came out of the box (or with any ROM upgrades you have done).
2x soft keys and a stylus up the derrier!!
Hang on as long as you can, someone may have had this before.
I have had this before...twice....
In both cases it was immediately after loading an application - last time was Google maps.
However, it isn't Google maps that caused it..I believe, from a process of trial and error, that it was one of two apps. loaded immediately BEFORE the last one - either WIMP or Bandswitch (or maybe a combo of both). Whatever, in both cases pressing the MESSAGING button or the Today secreen item resulted in nothing. Also there were icons missing in the apps and control panel folders. My only conclusion was that a badly constructed app. had somehow not controlled where in memory it was writing.
Sorry, but the only fix for my situation was a hard reset.
Andy.
Mine does this. On mine it is lost clusters/chains on the storage card where you've saved attachments. The solution for me is to delete the Inbox.something folder on the card.
Why it happens I have no idea though.
Jon
Perfect! That worked - thank you.
The only downside is that I lost my old SMS messages - but it's better than no messages at all. Now to find a way of backing up those SMS messages....
thanks re messaging

I don't think I lost my SMS msgs but the suggestion worked. Anyhow, Sprite Archie is a way of backing up your SMS to email.

WORKED FOR ME TOO. THANKS. AND GOOD LUCK TO ANYONE WITH THIS PROBLEM
this is VERY odd.. last week my messaging also stopped working! It acted as if the messaging exe. had been deleted or something.. nothing was responsive in launching it.
Someone mentioned google maps. I CLEARLY recalled that I updated to the new version of google maps.. and then the messaging problems occurred. I had been thinking these two were related.
Thank you so very much Jon

Thank you so much for the solution. It has helped many desperate souls just like myself.
I've been hard resetting & restoring old backup for the last 4 hours without avail until I read this post. I managed to launch the SMS/MMS/email again
Thank you once again & you're our saviour!
Mine did this 2 days ago, "luckly" a soft reset on my att tilt fixed it..(crosses his fingers)
Cheers Jon
had this occur on my TYTN II this morning and was starting to panic as i keep a lot of work mail and text on my handset and havent backed up this weeks yet !!!
managed to delete the inbox.xxxxxxx folder from the memory card and all is well, no messages or data lost, mind you i did a quick PIM backup before i did just in case.....
So big thanks fella.
I just removed my storagecard and put it back in again. that was all i needed to do
Windows Mobile 6 email/SMS/MMS not starting
Thanks to all who contributed to this solution.
I have an HTC Touch Cruise and was about to do a hard-reset when I found this thread.
Saved my day! and a lot of work in case I had done hard reset, having to install all my software again.
Deleting inbox.xxxxxx folder did the trick but there is one minor issue.
The HTC Touch Cruise has the 3D TouchFlo interface and this has a "Today" app that also has quicklauncher buttons for e-mail and SMS. These buttons indicate the number of unread e-mails and SMS-es and indicates a wrong number until you do a soft-reset.
Then works like a dream.
Thanks again.

Out of Memory Message

I've searched the forums several times over and haven't been able to find a solution to my problem.
For some odd reason, whenever attempting to send an MMS (using wm6_threaded for threaded messaging) I get an error message saying that I am out of memory and to close some windows and try again (even when only the messaging window is open). My internal memory has 58.13mb of storage and 66.70mb of program memory free. To be safe I even uninstalled SpB pocket plus and reinstalled it to the storage card, but I am still getting the error message.
Any ideas?

i don't know what you have on your device .. but i can tell you i use my device very heavily and still hardly ever run out of program memory... Did you try clearing pie caches etc.?? sometimes that can cause your device to perform slowly too. If all fails you could use task manager to see which app is taking most cpu memory.
I had spb mobile shell, pocketplus, dairy, and alot more apps running at same time and still didn't run out of memory.
I have cleared the PIE cache using clear temp and my task manager is showing no active apps running. And it only seems to be showing this message when sending/receiving MMS (occassionally with SMS as well).
I'm using the stock At&t ROM w/o bloatware and I'm running HTC home, Spb pocket plus, quickmenu and weather panel on the today screen. I've been considering flashing a new ROM to my TILT, would this remedy the memory issue?
To me it seems more like a bogus error message from the program. Too many programs use "out of memory" as a generic error when nothing is defined for a specific error...
Are your MMS settings correct in the application?
I uninstalled the Wm6_threaded app and the problem has ceased. While we're at it.... anyone have any suggestions for a threaded messaging app or should I just go ahead and upgrade to a wm 6.1 rom?

i would say sure ... proceed with upgrade. if you don't like it you can always revert to wm6 just make sure you do reading on rom upgrading and flashing before you proceed.
I've done a lot of research on it, I've just been very hesitant due to worry over bricking my phone. Also, it's not going to go over well with the Mrs. once I start flashing ROMs, she thinks I play with this thing too much as it is.
Got to take the leap at some point I guess... would you recommend attempting to use Sashimi to reinstall apps with my first flash? Or to go ahead and do it the old fashioned way? I don't want to complicate things too much, so I'll take the baby steps if that's the best route.
I've just started using Sashimi, and it is dope. That being said, if it's your first flash it may be worthwhile to do it the old-fashioned way the first time. That way you can know if all programs are compatible etc. with the new ROM, or that something isn't already included on the new ROM that you're trying to install again.
Thx for the tip, I was leaning that direction for my first flash. However I have one more question before I take the plunge, what effect will flashing have on my purchased and registered programs (i.e. Pocket Plus, Mobile Shell)? Will I need to register these under a new serial or with they remain fully functional after a new ROM flash?
Of course you will have to reinstall and re-register them... unless you do the doohickey magic of SPB Backup 2.x and use the "ROM Upgrade" option. I did when moving up from Leo's V5 to V9 and it worked... I think. The phone threw a few tantrums since and I have no way of knowing whether it was restore-related or just plain spite. Plus, today I upgraded again, and NOT used the backup.
Why "under new serial", BTW? Just use the same serials over again and Robert is your close relative
Besides, you can use most applications for like 14 days free of charge, and your grace period begins anew with a new ROM + new installation.
Thx for the tips guys. I'll give it a go this weekend when I've got some time to sit down with my phone on the home cpu.
Whenever i'm in doubt and don't feel like spending days on the forums trying to get a GOOD answer, i just reflash and fix WHATEVER problem there was, 30 minutes of reflashing/reconfiguring is easier than a couple days of headache. When in doubt reflash.
I get the same message on the touch diamond, which is WM6.1. I can't seem to find a CAB so I can send MMS. does anyone have a solution? I am using Telus.

Messaging app suddenly stopped working

Hi,
I have a Tilt with one of SJ's ROMs, and SPB Shell 3.
Until this morning, the messaging app worked w/o any problems.
I didn't install anything or change any setting.
This afternoon I suddenly noticed I can't open up the messaging program (I believe it's tmail.exe?).
If I press on the messaging icon in SPB Shell, or from the Start menu (where I placed a link to the messaging application, using the Menus utility), I see a small "wheel" on the screen for a couple of seconds, then it disappears, and the messaging app (email, SMS, MM etc) doesn't come up at all.
If I try using tmail.exe by clicking directly on the exe file (found in the Windows directory), nothing happens at all, not even the small "wheel".
Should tmail.exe be in the Windows/startup directory? (at least a link to it)?
What could be causing this?
It has happened to me a couple of time before, and performing an HR followed by a restore always resolves the symptom.
But I want to know what causes this and whether there are any other solutions.
Thanks.
Delete the "inbox" folder on your storage card. This usually resolves the problem. Happened to me some months back also.
This has been happening a lot and I have a friend with this problem. Please let us know if this works.
Thank you, MACkjam, it worked.
That problem has been around for a while, as has the fix :http://www.htcwiki.com/thread/1072623/Can't+get+to+Messaging+anymore.
Have never read why, or who's fault it is, maybe 'cause the fix is so easy.
Hmmm...
Didn't think of looking there.
I Googled the issue but did not find any relevant answer.
But thanks for the pointer anyway.
Thanks a lot..
was having same problem.
Solved
can someone repost the solution...the link is now dead...

Can't get to texts or Emails

Hello all, I've been reading on these forums for a long time, but this is my first post as I was not able to find a solution while searching. This is what I have,
AT&T Tilt
With Windows Mobile 6.1 Flashed (DuTTy ROM, can't remember which one exactly now, Hybrid something I think)
I also had the TouchFLO 2D (Manilla) Home Screen, but recently switched back to the HTC Home screen thinking that that may have been the cause which didn't help)
I believe my phone gets the texts messages and the emails, because my phone notifys me with a buzz when I do, and I notice that the number of emails/texts changes. But, on the TouchFLO 2d, it says "No Messages" for each, and on the HTC home screen, it has the number for each, but when I click on them, it does nothing. I've tried clicking start -> Messages, and still does nothing.
A few other programs I have which may interfere, Slide 2 Unlock 2, and Pocket CM.
The Manilla 2D is version 21 or 22, can't exactly remember right now.
Any tips or hints are greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Also, I've tried power cycling, removing the battery for a while. Removing the SIM, and power cycle. And reinserting the SIM. Still nothing.
I know that if you search you will find. but i have had this same problem and have searched and could not find a solution for awhile. but like others say google is your friend. here was what i now do when this happens to me i use a program called advanced task manager and under processes i find TMAIL.EXE and end its processes and now i can go into my messages and email. i suggest to try that.
Ok Everyone.. when someone needs help.. most of them have searched and can;t find the answer.. that is why they are asking for help.... Telling them to go look some more when they most likely have is sort of elitist and rude... I have had problems before where I almost hard reset my phone, when there were simple fixes out there....
I had a very simmilar problem, and after doing a lot of research myself, I found this was my problem.. I was storing my attachments and messages on the storage card to save room... There is a file/folder in the root directory of the storage card called INBOX.mstXXXXXX where the X's are numbers... Just erase that folder... and reboot the phone... The forum where I found it also reccomended that I turn off the option to store the files on the SD card, but I am still doing it anyways... When I erase the folder it corrects the problem immediately.. and if my TXT stops working again... it is easy enough to fix.. The only problem is the messages you are getting now while it is not working will not be there when it is fixed.. but all your previous ones will be... I hope this helps!

Text message always says 1 message!

Hi all,
I have the HTC Pure. I got a few text messages at once and my phone slowed waaay down. I deleted the 3 messages that I had, however all but one of them were marked as read.
I called AT&T who in turn called HTC and said that this is a known issue but they have no fix in place and not planned.
So now, my phone always says I have one new text message, and I went and "cleaned" all of my messages; sent, draft, inbox, and deleted.
Does anyone know of a fix or a registry key that I can edit so that I don't have to do a hard reset?
Thanks!
I think it is just a problem from your current ROM .
Like such question , I will suggest you to flash a new ROM or install a new SMS APP.
it is easy to fix the problem after you change ROM
I've been having the same problem, and we are not alone...see thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=584623
I know I can cure the problem by re-flasing the ROM, but I was hoping for a less painful solution......plus there is no guarantee the problem won't happen again.
I have had this with emails before. Here is a program which fixed that. I'm not sure if it will work with SMS, but you can try....
Looks like a DB corrupt... The count is in the registry but also in the DB...
If you have a DB browser you can try to find the entry and change it....
Or you may also delete the DB, Windows will recreate a new one for you...

Nope, that's not the solution. And what kind of new SMS APP do you suggest?
Instead, try to hard reset the phone (Settings > System > Clear Storage), but back up the data (phone numbers etc) wih PIM Backup or alike into a microSD storage card.

Thanks for the suggestion. May I ask wha the "DB" is? I am somewhat familiar with the registry and I use Total Commander to edit it if need be.
I think it is in the registry as well; one value I would think. If not, do you think reinstalling the MMS software would work?
there use to be a hot fix for this on htc.com but it was for 6.1
not sure if they still have it up
well i had that problem in the past, it seems i had deleted an unread sms in the "deleted items" folder. After i deleted that one...i didn't have an unread notification...
other than that, i can't think of any solution
Had the same thing. As was suggested do a backup of all your personal data and then hard reset. No ROMS to play with no software to install (except any you already have) clean easy and cheap.

I know this is a problem with WM 6.5 and not Manilla/TouchFlo 3D. I was thinking that maybe if I can find the cab that runs when you do a hard reset if that will reset it and just install the standard stuff on top of what is there already.
On WM 5 it was easy to find that CAB file in the Windows folder but on 6.5 I can't seem to find it...

Hi, I had this problem once before (last year) and ended up having to do a hard reset.
Got problem again the other day and really wanted to avoid another HR so did some digging. This utility worked a treat.
Ran it, counter still said 1 unread message; turned off and re-started, counter unchanged; happened to receive a call almost immediately so let it go to voicemail, checked voicemail and when I'd finished the notification had gone!
From what the previous post mentioned about sending self an e-mail, I guess it had something to do with the notification system receiving a prompt?
Anyway, sorted and v.happy!
